Pushing the Italian deep in rallies, Shelton eventually secured a straight-sets victory, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Shelton’s girlfriend and soccer star Trinity Rodman showed her support online as he progressed in the event. She re-shared a picture of Shelton from @atptour on Instagram Stories, displaying the scoreline and expressing her love with a single heart emoji.
Rodman’s support comes at a crucial time for Shelton, who is making a comeback from injury. The World No. 6, a 2023 US Open and 2024 Australian Open semifinalist, had been hopeful to make a deep run at this year’s US Open before a shoulder injury sidelined him in the third round. He returned to the tour at the Shanghai Masters, where he lost to David Goffin in the opening round, and later competed at the Swiss Indoor Basel, falling to Jaume Munar in the second round.
Despite these setbacks, Shelton remains ranked 6th in the world and is on track to potentially make his debut at the ATP Finals in Turin.

Trinity Rodman recently opened up about the “rough times” she and Shelton faced at the start of their relationship. The couple, who have been Instagram official since March 2025, are both professional athletes who actively support each other’s careers and frequently attend each other’s games.
In a recent episode of ‘Friendlies’ on X with Sam Mewis, Rodman spoke about how much Shelton’s support meant to her when she was sidelined with a back injury in March, right at the beginning of their relationship.
“I would say Ben was huge in that support, and it’s so funny because it was like the start of our relationship. Rough! Rough timing for Ben. It was literally like the beginning of our relationship. I’m going through, like, the hardest time of my life. I’m really happy we made it out of that,” Rodman shared.
