Mainers voted on Tuesday to create a new “red flag” gun control law in response to the 2023 mass shooting in Lewiston.

Question 2, one of two statewide ballot questions, proposes to expand the state’s existing “yellow flag” law. This expansion would allow family members to go directly to court to seek an order restricting a loved one’s access to weapons.

The referendum passed with 62% voting yes and 38% voting no, based on results reported at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, with more than 95% of precincts counted.
