Scott Boras Speaks: Useful Imai Info, Cease Comments, Less Useful (But Mildly Entertaining) Puns

The tortured Scott Boras puns have become fun at this point, haven’t they? We expect them from the super-agent at national baseball gatherings, and he delivers two-parts corny, one-part clever zingers while holding court with the media. And, occasionally, he mixes in some actually useful info.

Boras spoke today at the GM Meetings in Las Vegas, and I’ll start with the useful info: Boras said that Japanese ace Tatsuya Imai will be posted on November 19, starting his 45-day window to sign with an MLB team. The timing makes sense, coming a day after Qualifying Offer decisions are due (which clarifies the top of the market a bit), and will give Imai some time into the New Year to finalize a deal.

My hope is that the Cubs will be involved. “He loves big markets … he is someone who really wants to be on a winning team and compete at the highest level,” Boras said about the Japanese pitcher.

Boras was asked separately about Dylan Cease and the Cubs:

_”I think we all know how Dylan Cease pitches at Wrigley Field. He’s dominant,”_ Boras stated.

An update on Kris Bryant, whose back issues are still troubling him: Agent Scott Boras addressed the situation with the Colorado Rockies.

_”It’s a medical situation. I’m sure KB would love to play every day. Obviously, he has a medical infirmary. We’ve had him to a host of doctors. We’ll just see how it plays out,”_ Boras said.

Understandably, there was a lot of Cody Bellinger talk. The Boras-a-palooza at the GM Meetings kicked off with a lengthy celebration of *Top Gun* in describing Bellinger, calling him an “urban maverick.” With no qualifying offer attached to Bellinger, Boras said, _“That goose is gone.”_

“He wants to play on a winning team,” Boras said when asked if Bellinger would be open to a return to Chicago.

Boras added he’s already had discussions with the Yankees about Bellinger, and he doesn’t think their interest would change even if Grisham takes the Qualifying Offer.

Scott Boras called Cody Bellinger the “top gun of the class,” a “versatile viper,” and a “middle-of-the-lineup merlin” who filled the role of “Ice Man” in New York because he “cooled” any concerns about hitting behind Aaron Judge.

“When it comes to Bellinger, there’s no question that the teams have a need. The need to Belli proceed,” Boras quipped about Cody Bellinger’s free agency.

More puns and alliteration came with Boras’s comments on Pete Alonso:

_”There’s no doubt Pete’s pursuers are primed to pay the power piper. Pete picked a perfect period to play preeminently at a primary position. A playoff parched plethora will pounce to participate in the Polar Plunge,”_ Boras said.

Scott Boras also leaned on coffee and donut quips for Alex Bregman.

Could the Red Sox bring Alex Bregman back in free agency? _“No one wants a Breg-xit,”_ Boras said.

On Dylan Cease, Boras joked, _“Unlike the other Dylan, he is exclusively electric.”_

_He’s cooking with gas today._

Scott Boras on Tarik Skubal:

_”The fans in Detroit want the Tigers to build a Tarik barrack. The Little Caesars are running around town saying, ‘Cy! Cy!’ … It should be Scooby-done, right? If not, I think the fans would certainly think it’s a Detroit doink.”_

As always, Scott Boras combined his sharp insights with his signature wordplay, making the GM Meetings both informative and entertaining.
