Federal immigration agents deployed tear gas and pepper spray on Saturday to disperse a crowd that had gathered to protest a prolonged arrest in a northwest Chicago suburb.

The standoff began around 10 a.m. Saturday when approximately 15 agents arrived to arrest an unidentified man at an apartment building on the 1600 block of Maple Lane in Elgin.

According to Elgin police, there had been a traffic crash earlier that morning involving a federal agent and the man, who then fled to the building.
