Saugus shines bright at annual tree lighting

SAUGUS Town Hall was aglow with festive lights Friday night as Santa Claus led the countdown to kick off the holiday season.

The evening began with Town Manager Scott Crabtree welcoming everyone to the celebration. “I’m very, very happy to have everybody here. It’s a cold night, but everybody’s here, and all the families are waiting for Santa,” Crabtree said.

At precisely 7 p.m., Santa arrived with his sleigh, guided by a horse, to the delight of families gathered outside Town Hall.

Before the ceremonial lighting, Board of Selectmen Chair Debra Panetta addressed the crowd. “Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Holidays for whatever you enjoy,” Panetta shared. “We wish you, on behalf of the Board of Selectmen, a very happy and healthy New Year. I want to thank the police, the fire, the DPW, the town manager, Jeannie (Meredith), and Mike (Gaffney) from his (Crabtree’s) office. I want to thank the Saugus High School band for coming out in this frigid weather. Thank you, they did a great job!”

Panetta also expressed gratitude to Santa, Building and Maintenance, and Youth and Recreation, recognizing their efforts in making the event possible.

As the countdown concluded and the switch was flipped, the trees surrounding Town Hall and the town center burst into light, officially ushering in the holiday season for Saugus.

Los Altos Vice Mayor Neysa Fligor leads in Santa Clara County Assessors race

Santa Clara County’s first open assessor’s race in more than three decades saw Los Altos Vice Mayor Neysa Fligor leading after the first returns on Tuesday night. Four candidates are vying to fill the seat vacated by longtime Assessor Larry Stone.

The special election was triggered by Stone’s decision to step down from the role in July, ahead of the expiration of his term in December 2026. The 84-year-old Stone was first elected as assessor in 1994, making him the longest-serving elected official in the county.

The assessor oversees an $8 billion public enterprise that assesses the value of more than 500,000 properties in Santa Clara County.

As of just after 8 p.m., Fligor led with 40% of the vote. Former Saratoga Councilmember Rishi Kumar trailed behind her with 24%, followed closely by Saratoga Councilmember Yan Zhao with nearly 21%, and East Side Union High School District Trustee Bryan Do with 15%.

If no candidate wins more than 50% of the vote, the two leading candidates will compete in a runoff election scheduled for December.

Greg Monteverde, who previously served as assistant assessor, is currently acting as the interim assessor.
