The Chinese military announced on Monday that it is dispatching air, navy, and rocket troops to conduct joint military drills around Taiwan. The exercises are intended as a warning against what Beijing describes as separatist forces and “external interference.”

These military drills follow a statement made by Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, who suggested that Japan’s military could intervene if China were to take action against Taiwan. Taiwan is a self-governing island that China, the world’s second-largest economy, insists must be reunified under its rule.

Notably, the Chinese military’s statement on Monday did not mention Japan directly.

Taiwan is an island located off the southeastern coast of China. It separated from the mainland in 1949 amid the Chinese Civil War and has operated with its own government since then. However, the government in Beijing continues to claim Taiwan as sovereign Chinese territory.
