Violent clashes erupted in Lahore on Saturday between police forces and protesters from the hardline Islamist group Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). The unrest began when authorities attempted to stop TLP demonstrators from marching toward Islamabad in support of a pro-Palestinian rally.

### Protests Sparked by Gaza Conflict

The protests started on Thursday in response to Israel’s recent actions in Gaza and escalated with what TLP termed the “Gaza March.” Thousands of protesters marched from Multan Road in Lahore toward Islamabad, chanting religious slogans and carrying sticks and rods.

### Escalation and Casualties

TLP, led by chief Saad Rizvi, accused Punjab police of firing “indiscriminately,” resulting in the deaths of 11 protesters and injuring over 50 others. These casualty figures have not been independently verified by police authorities.

### Police Tactics to Control Protesters

In an effort to control the demonstrations, the police used tear gas and set up barricades at key intersections including Yateem Khana Chowk, Chauburji, Azadi Chowk, and Shahdara. Despite these measures, protesters breached several barriers and continued their advance.

Videos circulating on social media showed TLP activists occupying portions of the Orange Line Metro track and hurling stones at police officers. Clashes intensified particularly near Lahore’s Azadi Chowk, where several police vehicles were set on fire.

### Statements from Protest Leaders

A TLP leader’s viral video claimed, “11 TLP people have been killed since the morning. Continuous shelling and firing is happening,” highlighting the scale of the violent confrontations.

### Context Amid International Developments

These clashes come at a significant moment as Israel and Hamas have agreed to a Gaza peace deal, mediated by US President Donald Trump.

### Government Response

Pakistan’s Minister of State for Interior, Talal Chaudhry, condemned TLP for “misusing” the Gaza issue for “political gain.” He warned that the government would not tolerate violence or blackmail from any group.

An anti-terrorism court in Lahore has placed 110 TLP activists in police custody on charges including attacking officers and damaging public property.

The situation remains tense as authorities and protesters remain at odds over the handling of the demonstrations. Further developments are awaited.
