Thousands flock to NC Central University for homecoming with new safety measures in place

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — Thousands of people flocked to North Carolina Central University on Saturday for homecoming, which came with new security measures ahead of this year’s celebrations.

Despite the Eagles’ 35-26 loss to Delaware State, the energy and excitement for homecoming remained high. Many current and former students describe the event as a family reunion.

“Homecoming means the greatest four years of your life that we are able to reflect on with friends, family,” said Chelsea Ray, an NCCU Class of 2005 alum.

This year’s festivities were filled with Eagle Pride.

“People come from all over the country to Durham, North Carolina, every year to celebrate our homecoming,” shared NCCU senior Zion Tyson.

Quentin White, who graduated from NCCU in 2023, expressed gratitude for a safe and enjoyable homecoming experience.

“It’s amazing, man, being able to do something like this without any violence going on? It’s perfect,” he said.

The university implemented several changes this year to improve safety, following two separate shootings during last year’s homecoming weekend that left four people injured.

To enhance security, only faculty, staff, and students were allowed to park on campus during the festivities. Shuttle services were also provided from downtown Durham and Durham Tech to campus. Additionally, all music on campus ended at 6:30 p.m., and the campus closed down by 7 p.m.

ABC11 observed a significant law enforcement presence on campus from various agencies, as well as drones monitoring the Post Game Social on Saturday evening.

NCCU alum Lakeaya Lane appreciated the added safety measures.

“This area is about to be packed with people,” she said. “Knowing that you’re going to be safe and everybody can come and there’s still a place where everybody can be.”

NCCU senior Malcolm Reed agreed, offering advice to fellow Eagles celebrating homecoming this weekend.

“Stay safe out there. Don’t do nothing crazy. Don’t do nothing your mom wouldn’t approve of,” he said. “We’ll see you next year!”
