Asia Stocks Rise on China Data, Trade Talks; Nikkei Hits Record Highs on Takaichi Bet

Asian stocks traded higher on Monday, driven by a mix of political optimism in Japan and encouraging economic data from China. Japanese shares soared to a new record as investors bet on Sanae Takaichi securing the premiership, anticipating her adoption of ‘fiscal dove’ policies.

**Investor Sentiment in Japan**

Expectations of Sanae Takaichi becoming prime minister have propelled Japanese stocks to record highs. Alongside this, the yen weakened, reflecting market confidence in her potential fiscal policies that may favor increased government spending and a more accommodative approach to economic stimulus.

**Easing Trade Tensions Boost Asia Markets**

Trade tensions appear to be easing, as highlighted by President Trump’s moderated stance on tariffs and the prospect of upcoming trade talks. These developments have buoyed stock indexes across Asia and lifted several local currencies, contributing to the overall positive market sentiment.

**China’s Economic Indicators Show Mixed Signals**

While China experienced slower year-on-year GDP growth, strong quarterly growth and robust industrial output supported optimism for Chinese stocks. However, stable monetary policy combined with tight export controls presents both opportunities and risks for investors navigating the market.

Humility: The Solid Foundation for Holiness

**Getting Your Trinity Audio Player Ready**

Only once in Sacred Scripture, in the Gospel of Matthew (11:28-30), does Jesus describe the characteristics of His Sacred Heart:

> “Come to me all you who find life burdensome, and I will give you rest.
> Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart.
> For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

These are the two essential qualities of His Sacred Heart that Jesus highlights: meekness and humility.

From this passage, the Church has formulated one of its most beautiful aspirations, which we can take into our hearts and repeat frequently during the course of the day. That prayer is:

> “Jesus meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto thine.”

Time and time again, Jesus insists on the dire importance of humility if we want to find God’s favor. God rejects the proud, and He lifts up the humble.

### The Parable of the Pharisee and the Publican

This teaching is illustrated perfectly in the Parable of the Pharisee and the Publican (Luke 18:9-14). The two go up to the temple to pray. The Pharisee names all his good points and praises himself. The Publican, on the other hand, remains in the back of the temple and does not even lift his eyes to pray, begging God to have mercy on him, a sinner.

### Our Lady’s Example of Humility

Our Lady gave us the perfect example by proclaiming herself the handmaid of the Lord. In her marvelous prayer, the Magnificat, she both praises God and humbles herself, saying,

> “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
> for he has looked upon the lowliness (humility) of his handmaid” (Luke 1:46-56).

Given that humility is essential to our growth in holiness, let us explore some practical ways in which we can strive for this virtue.

### Practical Ways to Cultivate Humility

**1. Pray**

It has been said that we are greatest and highest—in the eyes of God—when we are on our knees. By praying, we acknowledge our dependence on God and not on ourselves. In the words of the “Doctor of Grace,” St. Augustine, pertinent to humility related to prayer:

> “We are all beggars before God.”

**2. Cultivate Gratitude**

How important it is for our holiness to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and to say often, both to God and to others, those significant words: “Thank you!” Humble people go out of their way to give thanks.

Jesus was both dismayed and hurt when, after healing the ten lepers, only one returned to give Him thanks. The one who returned recognized that his healing was a pure gift from the Heart of Jesus the Healer, the Divine Physician.

**3. Take the Last Place**

Jesus offers us the Parable of the Banquet, in which many were jostling to secure for themselves the best place, closest to the host. Jesus warned that when invited, we should take the last place and not the first. Then we will be first in the eyes of God. This is a sign of a humble heart!

**4. Do Not Curse Others**

Our natural tendency, when someone cuts us off on the road, is to utter nasty words or curse them. This is all too natural — not supernatural.

Jesus wants us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. These commands are found in the Sermon on the Mount, the Our Father, and even when He hung on the cross:

> “Father forgive them, for they know not what they are doing.”

**5. Compliment Others for Their Gifts**

One of the most poisonous attitudes in the spiritual life is jealousy or envy. When we give in to such feelings, we hurt God, ourselves, and others. By choosing to praise or compliment others instead, we win the spiritual battle—indeed, this is a victory in humility!

**6. Be First to Greet**

Imagine this everyday scene: you are walking towards someone you know, and the distance between you is lessening. Do you wait to be greeted first or take the initiative?

Whoever greets first is practicing a host of virtues: charity, courtesy, hospitality, affability, and, of course, humility. We put the other person before ourselves by choosing to greet first, and that is humility.

**7. Apologize**

This one is easier said than done! When we make a mistake or offend someone, it is easy to rationalize, justify, or sweep it under the rug. Such pride is insidious and prevalent.

A humble person is honest, capable of admitting their error and saying, “I am sorry.” Many relationships have been mended by these simple yet humble words.

**8. Listen Attentively**

St. James states clearly:

> “We should be slow to speak and quick to listen” (James 1:19).

A person who wants to do all the talking and refuses to listen often harbors pride and self-love. Conversely, one who listens attentively, encourages, and does not seek the last word displays great humility. The listener pleases Jesus, the best of speakers and listeners (see Luke 24 on Jesus and the disciples of Emmaus).

**9. Confess Your Sins**

Every time we prepare and make a good sacramental confession, our “humility thermometer” ascends to a soaring level.

Confessing with transparency, sincerity, and honesty our moral failings to the priest demands great humility. None of us like to reveal our spiritual shortcomings, but it is necessary to climb the ladder of humility and holiness.

**10. Have a Devotion to Mary**

Our Lady is the surest, quickest, and most efficacious pathway to Jesus. In *True Devotion to Mary*, the great Marian saint Louis de Montfort exalts Mary and ten of her most sublime virtues.

Among Mary’s greatest virtues is her profound humility. Of all God’s creatures, Mary was the greatest and by far the humblest. She recognized that all her gifts and virtues were pure gifts from God.

### In Conclusion

In our pursuit of holiness, we must understand the paramount importance of humility. Yet more importantly, let us strive to put this essential virtue into practice daily.

May we lift up our hearts often throughout the day, longing for holiness and humility, and pray:

> **Jesus meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto thine.**

Fine Dining: Are You Here for the Dishes or the Decor?

I’ve always divided London into two dining realms. With Covent Garden as the provisional center, restaurants that are showy and posh lie to the west, while going east brings more focus on food.

That’s my rule of thumb, at least within the maximum range of my long walks — the seven-mile span between Chelsea and Hackney.

FMJRA 2.0: No Joy At Fenway

Compiled by Wombat-socho

Well, at least we won the opener. The 1974 Senators began the season on the road against the Red Sox in Fenway Park. Jim Kaat went the distance for a 7-2 win in the opener, but neither Carl Morton nor Steve Renko could hold the BoSox bats in check in games 2 and 3, which were close losses—though a loss is still a loss.

We face the Royals this Tuesday.

Fascinating Background – The CIA Was Misleading Witkoff and Kushner on Key Intelligence About Hamas During Critical Phase of Peace Negotiations

A fascinating hour-long interview with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner sheds light on the backstory of the Israel-Hamas peace agreement in Gaza. During the discussion, Witkoff and Kushner detail the step-by-step process they followed as they engaged the leaders of Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt.

One particularly striking moment occurs when Witkoff reveals that the CIA was briefing both him and Kushner multiple times a day. However, the intelligence they received from the CIA was exactly the opposite of what the Emir of Qatar and the Presidents of Turkey and Egypt were telling them. In other words, the CIA intelligence was completely at odds with the reality on the ground.

**WATCH:** What Witkoff and Kushner are describing highlights precisely why “outside government” emissaries play a vitally necessary role in circumventing the control agenda of the U.S. Intelligence Community. This example is stunning in its magnitude, especially when considered within the importance of the moment.

On a positive note, with Witkoff making this candid public statement, we can now add a major data point to President Trump’s well-known skepticism toward the CIA. This aligns with previous assertions from figures like Marco Rubio and Tulsi Gabbard, who have expressed similar concerns about intelligence reliability.

The example of the CIA getting it wrong—and misleading the administration—has long-range ramifications that extend beyond the Hamas case. Given this context, it’s reasonable to feel optimistic that President Trump remains cautious about trusting CIA intelligence, particularly regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

This insight underscores the ongoing debate about intelligence transparency and reliability at the highest levels of government.

ClutchPoints’ 2025 Week 9 SEC Football Power Rankings

Week 8 of the college football season has concluded. Some SEC teams took major victories, while other big-time teams found themselves on upset alert. Two teams remain undefeated in conference play, but six others have just one loss. This has led to significant changes in the 2025 SEC Football Power Rankings.

### 1. Alabama (-)
Alabama remains at the top of the SEC Power Rankings with six straight wins. Meanwhile, Kalen DeBoer has donned his black hoodie in six consecutive games. Alabama faced Tennessee in Week 8 and dominated early. On the last play of the first half, Alabama intercepted a pass and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown. They led by 16 at halftime and went on to win the game 37-20. This marked their fourth straight win over a ranked opponent. The Crimson Tide are now 4-0 in conference play and 6-1 overall. Alabama will hit the road in Week 9 to face South Carolina.

### 2. Texas A&M (+1)
Texas A&M is the only undefeated team in the conference, standing at 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. This past week, they faced Arkansas in a tight game early on, but the Aggies built a 38-27 lead by the end of the third quarter. Arkansas fought back and scored with nine seconds left to narrow the gap to three points. However, Texas A&M recovered the onside kick and secured a 45-42 victory. The Aggies will travel to take on LSU in Week 9, looking to notch their second win over a ranked opponent this season.

### 3. Georgia (+1)
Georgia moves up one spot in the rankings, improving to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The game against Ole Miss was a struggle early, with the Rebels scoring on all three of their first-half drives to lead by one at halftime. Ole Miss continued its strong start with a 75-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the half and scored on its next possession as well, tallying five consecutive touchdown drives. However, Georgia’s defense tightened up, limiting Ole Miss to just 13 yards the rest of the game. The Bulldogs completed a comeback victory, 43-35. Georgia will have the week off in Week 9 before facing Florida in Week 10.

### 4. Ole Miss (-2)
Ole Miss has fallen to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Rebels have been solid all year, balancing good defense with great offense. In their game against Georgia, they scored touchdowns on their first five possessions but could not hold on, falling 43-35 in their first defeat of the year. Ole Miss will visit Oklahoma in Week 9.

### 5. Vanderbilt
After an exciting 2024 season that included an upset over No. 1 Alabama and a 7-6 finish, Vanderbilt’s story is far from over. The Commodores are ranked No. 10 in the AP Poll—their first Top 10 appearance since 1947—and currently stand at 6-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Last week, Vanderbilt hosted LSU, leading 17-13 at halftime before scoring touchdowns on both third-quarter possessions to take a ten-point lead. The defense shutdown LSU in the fourth quarter, allowing only three points in a 31-24 victory. Vanderbilt remains home in Week 9, hosting Missouri.

### 6. Missouri (+1)
Missouri jumps one spot after edging Auburn in Week 8. The Tigers improved to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in SEC play. It was an ugly win; the offense struggled in the second half and Auburn took the lead in the fourth quarter. Missouri tied the game with a touchdown at 5:07 remaining and drove for the win, but an interception by Beau Pribula sent the game to overtime. After missed field goals by both teams in the first overtime, Pribula redeemed himself with a rushing touchdown in the second overtime. The defense held firm, securing a 23-17 victory. Missouri will travel to Vanderbilt in Week 9.

### 7. Tennessee (-1)
Tennessee drops one spot following their Week 8 loss to Alabama. The Volunteers are now 5-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Their only previous loss was an overtime defeat against Georgia. However, they struggled against Alabama, who controlled the first half, including a defensive touchdown. Tennessee was unable to mount a comeback, falling 37-20. They will look to rebound in Week 9 with a visit to Kentucky.

### 8. Oklahoma (+2)
Oklahoma bounced back from its first loss of the season with a road win over South Carolina in Week 8. The Sooners scored on their opening drive and again early in the second quarter, holding a seven-point lead at halftime. Although the offense stalled in the second half—with John Mateer throwing for just 150 yards—the defense stepped up. Oklahoma won decisively, 26-7, improving to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. They face a tough challenge next week as they host Ole Miss.

### 9. LSU (-4)
LSU experiences a significant drop after their second loss of the season. The Tigers are 5-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play. Offensively, LSU scored 24 points against Vanderbilt—their highest total against an FBS opponent this year (previous high was 23 vs. Louisiana Tech). However, the defense surrendered 31 points, which is the most points they’ve allowed all season. LSU has only allowed more than ten points twice this year, both of which resulted in losses. The Tigers hope to tighten their defense ahead of a Week 9 home game against Texas A&M.

### 10. Texas (-1)
Texas slips one spot despite moving to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. In their narrow overtime win against Kentucky, the Longhorns struggled offensively; Arch Manning threw for just 132 yards, and the team managed only 179 yards total. The defense gave up 395 yards but still helped the team to a 16-13 victory in overtime. Texas will visit Mississippi State in Week 9.

### 11. Florida (-)
A Week 8 win was not enough to save Billy Napier, who has been fired as Florida’s head coach. The Gators defeated Mississippi State 23-21, relying on a late defensive stand to seal the victory. Mississippi State had rallied from a nine-point deficit, but an interception by Blake Shapen helped preserve Florida’s win. The Gators now stand at 3-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Florida will have the week off in Week 9.

### 12. Mississippi State (-)
Mississippi State, with low preseason expectations, is 4-3 overall but 0-3 in conference play. They had an opportunity to beat Florida but were hampered by questionable play-calling. On second down at Florida’s 29-yard line with 21 seconds left, they opted to pass instead of setting up a likely game-winning field goal, resulting in an interception. Mississippi State will host Texas in Week 9.

### 13. Auburn (-)
Auburn could be the next SEC coach on the hot seat, falling to 3-4 overall and 0-4 in conference play. The Tigers had a chance to secure their first conference win against Missouri but were undone by a turnover and three missed field goals in double overtime. Auburn will host Missouri in Week 10.

### 14. Arkansas (-)
Arkansas’ latest stint under Bobby Petrino got off to a rough 0-2 start in conference play. The Razorbacks fought hard and scored three touchdowns in the second half against Texas A&M but fell short in a 45-42 loss, marking their fifth consecutive defeat. Arkansas will visit Auburn in Week 10.

### 15. Kentucky (+1)
Kentucky nearly pulled off a major upset over Texas in Week 8. The Wildcats outgained the Longhorns by over 200 yards but struggled to convert yards into points. They missed a long field goal at the end of the first half and, in overtime, turned the ball over on downs at the Texas 3-yard line. Texas kicked a field goal to win 16-13. Kentucky will visit Tennessee in Week 10.

### 16. South Carolina (-1)
South Carolina drops one spot heading into Week 9 after their loss to Oklahoma. The Gamecocks will face Alabama at home next week, a daunting challenge as they seek to turn their season around.

The 2025 SEC Football landscape is shaping up to be highly competitive, with several teams jockeying for position as the season enters its critical stages. Fans can look forward to exciting matchups in the coming weeks as teams strive for conference dominance.
