Rangers need J.T. Miller’s leadership now more than ever with team in transition

PHILADELPHIA — The New York Rangers’ “retool” may hinge on Chris Drury’s roster reconstruction, but much of the team’s direction will also depend on captain J.T. Miller.

This fact remains especially true following Drury’s announcement on Friday, when he declared his intentions to rework the Blueshirts. Leadership will be pivotal for what lies ahead, and the example Miller sets both on and off the ice will play a crucial role for the team.

“I feel a lot of responsibility right now, and there’s no doubt of that,” Miller told The Post just hours before the team released an official statement.

Smaller Jalen Brunson leading Knicks to NBA title is ‘tough’ task: NBA analysts

It’s the existential question that will hover over the Knicks until proven otherwise: Can a team win a championship with a small, less-athletic guard like the Knicks’ Jalen Brunson as their best player?

“Tough. It’s tough,” former NBA guard Tim Legler, now ESPN’s top NBA analyst, told The Post. “Even if you just took out the ‘not as athletic’ component, and you just said ‘at his size as your highest-volume shot-taker,’ just look historically how many teams have done that.”

Legler points to past examples to illustrate his point. “Let’s take a smaller guard that won a championship. Take an Isiah Thomas, for example; look at the balance on their scoring. You didn’t have the discrepancy that you have here where your leading scorer is seven points better than your next leading scorer. Then there’s another five-point drop before you get to your third leading scorer.”

“The teams that have done it and won it all with a guy that size as your top shotmaker have been more balanced teams. Chauncey Billups was a little bit bigger than that but still was a grounded player. He wasn’t a super athletic guy; strong base, all that kind of stuff. Look at the balance on that team.”

Entering Saturday’s game against the Suns at Madison Square Garden, Brunson averaged more than six more shots per game than the next closest teammate, Karl-Anthony Towns. In contrast, during the Detroit Pistons’ championship seasons in 1988-89 and 1989-90, Isiah Thomas was around two more shots per game than any of his teammates. And on the 2003-04 Pistons championship team, Billups wasn’t even the leading scorer or shot-taker; it was Richard Hamilton.

The only recent example of a smaller guard winning a championship as the lead scorer is Stephen Curry. The reigning champion Thunder have a guard in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as their best player and top scorer, but he is much bigger at 6-foot-6 and much more athletic.

**CHECK OUT THE LATEST NBA STANDINGS AND KNICKS STATS**

Unlike the Knicks, Oklahoma City was also an elite defensive team, similar to those Pistons squads.

“It’s not as easy,” former longtime NBA coach Stan Van Gundy, now an “NBA on Prime Video” analyst, told The Post. “Small guards in today’s game are not easy because you can’t switch as much. Steph Curry has shown us that certainly you don’t have to be a big guard to play on a championship-level team. One of the things that Steph has done throughout the course of his career is he has really improved at the defensive end.”

Van Gundy adds, “It’s one of the things in my preparation [for Warriors games]. Teams try to go at him, but it’s not that easy anymore. He has great pride in what he does at the defensive end. Can you have somebody that size on a championship team be the best player? Yep, you can. Is it easy? No.”

Looking back over the past decade, the non-Warriors championship teams have been led by players like LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as their best player and top scorer.

The discourse became a national talking point when Becky Hammon, then an ESPN analyst, said two years ago that Brunson is too small to be a “1A dude” capable of leading a team to a championship. Allen Iverson and Steve Nash were examples she used as precedent.

Since then, the Knicks have added depth around Brunson with players like Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges, rather than using resources to land a superstar like Antetokounmpo that could potentially make Brunson more of a second option.

Legler sums it up: “It’s a smaller guy, highest usage rate, biggest shot taker, kind of know exactly what’s gonna happen late in games. Being honest? It’s not easy, it’s very rarely been done in the history of the league. That’s what they’re trying to pull off and it’s not an easy thing to do.”

The silver lining, according to Legler, is Brunson’s efficiency. “Most guys his size aren’t this efficient. Most guys his size that shoot that much do not shoot 48 percent from the field. They don’t shoot 40 percent from the 3-point line. Most of those guys, in that size range that take a lot of shots, are in the low 40s. They’re 34 percent from the three. That’s way more typical than what Brunson does.”

Brunson has defied expectations throughout his career. But the vast majority of recent NBA history remains a challenge to overcome.

Miami Offers Ty Simpson Record-Breaking Deal After Missing on Sam Leavitt

Many believed the Miami Hurricanes were in a strong position to land former Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt after hosting him on a transfer portal visit over the weekend. However, by Monday, Leavitt announced where he’ll be playing college football in 2026—and it wasn’t in Coral Gables.

Despite a last-ditch effort from Tennessee, Leavitt ultimately chose to play for Lane Kiffin at LSU. This decision leaves the Hurricanes without a clear successor to Carson Beck for the 2026 season.

While the Hurricanes may have missed out on Leavitt, speculation has been swirling around another potential quarterback target.

According to Gay, “The Hurricanes’ official NIL offer to Simpson started at $4 million and quickly ballooned to $5 million within minutes before reaching the current offer.”

Rumors suggest that a move to Miami for Simpson had been in the works for several days. The 23-year-old junior threw for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just five interceptions this past year. He recently declared for the 2026 NFL Draft after receiving feedback indicating he would be a first-round pick.

However, a $6.5 million NIL offer may be too enticing for Simpson to pass up—especially considering that he would need to be drafted within the first seven picks to earn as much or more playing professionally (the salary slot for the No. 8 pick in the 2026 draft is $5.6 million).

Two years ago, the Hurricanes convinced Cam Ward to skip the draft and play for them another year. That decision paid off, as Ward went No. 1 overall to the Tennessee Titans in the 2025 draft. They also persuaded Carson Beck to forgo the draft and play another year of college football, and he’s since led Miami to the College Football Playoff national championship game.

“Simpson has already stated his intention to turn pro, but so did Cam Ward, right?” On3 reported. “With Sorsby and Leavitt—top options that aren’t heading Miami’s way—the team could make a big offer to try and get Simpson to reconsider and stay in college.”

As the 2026 season approaches, the Hurricanes continue to explore opportunities to secure a quarterback who can carry the program forward. Fans will be watching closely to see if Miami can pull off a surprise signing or rely on internal development to fill the void left by Beck’s eventual departure.

UMass hockey falls to Army West Point 5-4

In its first non-conference game in nearly a month, the No. 18 Massachusetts hockey team fell to Army West Point 5-4 on Saturday. The Minutemen (8-8, 2-5 Hockey East) dropped to .500 after racing out to a 3-0 start. With one series remaining before the new year, they are still searching for cohesion up and down the lineup.

UMass tied the game at 3-3 and 4-4 but could not find the next goal on either occasion. Just over a minute after the Black Knights (4-8-3, 1-8-2 Atlantic Hockey) took a 3-2 lead, Nick VanTassell scored the Minutemen’s third goal of the day off a gritty net-front drive on the rush.

Lucas Ölvestad charged up the left wing deep into Army’s zone with about 14 minutes left in the second period. The senior defenseman’s centering pass deflected off Jack Musa, who was streaking through the slot, and fluttered towards the back post. VanTassell used his 6-foot-5 frame to guide the puck into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

Václav Nestrašil scored UMass’ fourth goal, and his second of the game, 23 seconds after the Black Knights’ Barron Woodring scored to make it 4-3 in favor of Army with two minutes remaining in the second period. Musa and Jack Galanek assisted on a crisp passing sequence on the power play.

The Minutemen went 2-for-3 on the power play, with Nestrašil also scoring the other goal to put UMass up 2-0 in the first period off an assist by Daniel Jenčko from the point. The Minutemen are now converting 26.8% of their opportunities on the man advantage so far this season, good for seventh in the nation.

“[The power play] got two goals,” head coach Greg Carvel said. “It’s just playing hockey. Nothing that we drew up. The second goal was just good hockey players playing hockey, making plays.”

Owen Murray scored his first of the season to give UMass a 1-0 advantage with 13 minutes left in the first period. The senior defenseman received a short pass from Nestrašil after a faceoff win by Galanek, picked his spot, and ripped a wrister past Jacob Biron in net.

Murray’s goal came after significant changes to the Minutemen’s defensive pairings for this matchup against the Black Knights. Murray and Ölvestad were split up after being together all of this season and the second half of last season, with Murray now paired alongside Francesco Dell’Elce and Ölvestad with Coleson Hanrahan. Landon Nycz and Larry Keenan formed the third pair.

“[I was looking for] combinations that work,” Carvel said. “[When] you’re not winning, you try new things. For the [defensive] pairs, just trying to see if different pairs look better.”

Army took its 5-4 lead with three-and-a-half seconds left in the second period, capping off a four-goal period for the Black Knights. Brent Keefer received a pass from Pierce Patterson at the offensive blue line, then glided in on a 2-on-1. The junior whipped a wrister past Michael Hrabal’s blocker for his second of the season.

The goal knocked Hrabal out of the game, and the junior ended his return to action with nine saves on 14 shots.

Odd-man rushes and breakaways were an issue for UMass, with most of the Black Knights’ sparse chances coming in high-danger situations.

“We’ve got some young defensemen that I thought needed to stay above the puck and gave them some odd-man rushes that didn’t help [Hrabal],” Carvel said. “Unfortunately, the chances that [Army] got—they didn’t have a ton in the game, but they were high-end chances.”

The Minutemen play their final series of 2024 against Northeastern at Matthews Arena in Boston on Dec. 6 and 7. Puck drop on Saturday is at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday, and both matchups can be streamed on ESPN+.

Spivey: The Hurts disrespect must cease

“Uncompromising”. It was the first word that came to mind after a report surfaced about players and coaches being frustrated with Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. Before the season, I interviewed Birds legend and radio analyst Mike Quick. Here’s what Quick said about Hurts. “He’s uncompromising in who he is and he’s going to be that person. And if the coaches don’t like it, even if it’s some of his guys don’t like it, he’s an uncompromising, excellent leader.” Someone at NCC doesn’t like the Super Bowl MVP’s meticulous mentality. They’re not a fan of how a bona fide, perennial winner moves. He ticks off individuals who have benefited from his success but in essence, also accuses the QB of insubordination. This is all while his squad is 8-2, running away with their division, and currently the NFC’s number one seed holding head-to-head tiebreakers over all the conference’s contenders. Detroit, Green Bay, Tampa Bay, and the L.A. Rams were all losers to Philly. Yet, the sixth-year field general’s character has been questioned despite his résumé and current position in which the team currently sits. Don’t get me wrong, no QB is above critique and the offense needs some work. That being said, Hurts has earned and deserves much more respect than he has been given. Especially more than most other QBs who haven’t won a damn thing in the NFL. “He does things the right way. The way he comes to work, the way he goes about his work”, Quick added. He’s the kind of dude that you would want to have to run anything. If you have something that you really covet, this is the kind of guy that you could put in charge of.” I paraphrase a reference from the show “Raising Kanan” when Raq told her then-teenager, “You may hate my methods, but you love the results!” But around here unfortunately, it’s not if you win, it’s how you win. Perhaps there’s too much heat on first-year offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, who has been getting grilled like slabs of ribs at a cookout on Belmont Plateau. Therefore, aim the barrel of the gun back at the QB, whom many still believe his accolades are one too many. For a quarterback who has won as much as Hurts, ‘Iggles’ fans who still haven’t gotten over replacing him with Carson Wentz would much rather take their chances with backup Tanner McKee. Some are even looking for ways to dump the 27-year-old’s contract. It is similar to the fans of James Bond 007 clutching their pearls, envisioning the spy cast as a Black man. The thought of actors like Idris Elba, Damson Idris, Aaron Pierre, or Regé-Jean Page taking over such a role would be deemed as sacrilegious. Of all people, former NFL QB and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky candidly echoed the lack of respect for Hurts. “All this dude does is literally everything that everybody begs every other QB to do or knocks them for not doing”, Orlovsky said, also referring to the 51-14 record since 2022. “We kill guys. Joe Burrow, does he win enough? Dak Prescott, does he win enough? Matthew Stafford didn’t win enough in Detroit. Josh Allen doesn’t win enough”, Orlovsky continued. “He can’t win the big game. Lamar Jackson can’t. All Hurts does is everything that we beg for those quarterbacks to do.” Winning comes in many different sizes, shapes, and packages. This fanbase, let alone society, still has such a long way to go to understand that, especially with such a spotlighted position as quarterback. And as for the ones who don’t like it down in South Philly, if Jalen Hurts is so stubborn, so insubordinate, I dare Eagles ownership and management to find a team where he would be open to waiving his no-trade clause. If not, the disrespect must cease.

Best PW5A3 build – Battlefield 6

The PW5A3 is a powerful little SMG that can rinse through foes with relative ease. The following build for this SMG leans into its strengths and focuses on aim-down-sight gunplay instead of shooting from the hip. With a few levels into the gun, this PW5A3 build will see you cleaning up entire squads. Best PW5A3 build This PW5A3 build focuses on increasing the Precision and Control stats. These stats ensure the bullets are grouped tighter and make the gun easier to control when firing full auto. Read over our guide that explains Battlefield 6’s weapon stats for more insight. Suppressor: Standard Suppressor Barrel: Basic Underbarrel: 6H64 Vertical Magazine: 30 Fast Ammo Type: Frangible Sights: OSA-7 1. 00X Ergonomics: Mag Catch Start the build using the Standard Suppressor. While this offers no advantage to Precision or Control like the Brakes, it does ensure you’re hidden on the map when firing this is critical when moving around in close quarters, as is required for SMGs. The Underbarrel is where we get a lot of the stat boosts. The Stubby grip offers greater stats, but it is much more expensive, and that ultimately means you miss out on some other attachments that make the PW4A3 a beast. For this reason, we go with the 6H64 Vertical. For the Magazine and Ergonomics, go with the 30 Fast and Mag Catch to make reloading extremely zippy. You can down a foe in four headshots, but if you mainly hit center of mass and need to reload, you won’t be waiting long before continuing your spree. Once you level up the gun a bit more, slap on the Frangible ammo. These rounds delay the health regeneration of anyone you hit, allowing you to keep the pressure on your foe even when they’re behind cover. Don’t use Hollow Point or Synthetic, as the percentage increase does little to improve the time-to-kill. Finally, the Sights might be the one area where personal preference comes into play. For me, the OSA-7 1. 00X offers a clean profile, which means you aren’t blocking your vision with a chunky scope. The drawback is that it does not offer any magnification. However, you shouldn’t really be using an SMG to make long, potshots anyway. If you dislike it, try one with magnification, just note you will lose a lot of your peripheral vision.

Bears Give Grim Update on Rookie Who Suffered Injury vs. Giants

The Chicago Bears pulled out a 24-20 win over the New York Giants on Sunday in front of their home crowd. However, before securing the victory, the team provided a grim update on the injury status of fourth-round rookie linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II.

Hyppolite exited in the third quarter of Week 10’s game — his first active game since September — due to a knee injury. Initially designated as “questionable” by the team, his status was later updated to out for the remainder of the game after about 40 minutes. The Bears’ communications team confirmed the update on X during Sunday’s game, stating:
“#Bears LB Ruben Hyppolite II (Knee) has been downgraded to OUT.”

Bears head coach Ben Johnson acknowledged Hyppolite’s knee injury during his postgame press conference but did not provide further details on the extent of the injury. Notably, the coach did not receive any questions from the press regarding Hyppolite’s current status.

This knee injury is a tough break for the rookie linebacker. Hyppolite had played 18 defensive snaps and 62 special teams snaps across the first four games of the season. However, after veteran T. J. Edwards returned following Week 5’s bye, Hyppolite was a healthy scratch for four consecutive games before finally seeing action again on Sunday against the Giants.

The Bears may share more details about Hyppolite’s injury during Coach Johnson’s media availability on Monday. Otherwise, fans will have to wait for the Wednesday injury report ahead of Chicago’s Week 11 road game against the Minnesota Vikings for the next official update.

The Bears (6-3) will square off against the Vikings (4-5) in a rematch at 1 p.m. ET next Sunday.
