Did you know John Elway was drafted by Yankees? Broncos legend reveals Baltimore factor that kept him out of baseball

John Elway enjoyed a remarkable 16-season career in the NFL, all with the Denver Broncos. Recently, the retired quarterback shed light on an intriguing aspect of his athletic journey—football wasn’t his only professional sports option.

In the NFL Hall of Famer’s documentary, *Elway*, which is now streaming on Netflix, he revealed that he was once drafted by the New York Yankees. However, something held him back from pursuing baseball full-time.

“I wanted to play football. The quarterback gets to touch the ball every down, and you’re in control of a lot of different things,” Elway explained. “I love playing baseball, but I was an outfielder, so it wasn’t quite as exciting as the quarterback position. If I couldn’t get out of [being drafted by] Baltimore, I was going to play baseball for a year. You never know—if I’d had a good year in baseball, would I have stayed in baseball? I think ultimately my big goal was to play football.”

Sports have always played a major role in Elway’s life. He shared that his father was a football coach and also talked openly about his love for basketball, which he described as his “first love.”

“I always thought I was going to be the next Jerry West because it was my favorite sport at that point in time,” Elway recalled. Unfortunately, an injury put an end to those hoop dreams. “I hurt my knee junior year in the Christmas tournament and missed a couple of months; then my senior year in football, I tore my knee up and had surgery, so I couldn’t play baseball or basketball,” he added. “So, basketball kind of eliminated itself. But when I first started, it was actually my favorite sport.”

Despite not pursuing a career in Major League Baseball or basketball, Elway cemented his legacy in Denver. He led the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 1998 and 1999 during his final two years in the league.

In recognition of his legendary career, John Elway was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2004, forever securing his place among football’s greatest players.

Valencia girls’ basketball begins season with back-to-back wins

After securing an 81-37 win over Verdugo Hills at home to start the season, Valencia girls’ basketball defeated Granada Hills Charter on Thursday and began the year with back-to-back wins. The Vikings defeated the Highlanders 69-26, with sophomore guard Kamila Basyrova leading all Valencia scorers with 21 points “I thought it was great to see our progress from game one to game two. I thought our defense was really standout today, especially in the first half,” Valencia head coach Jared Honig said. “I felt like we gave up a little but to many points in the first game, but tonight’s first-half defense was outstanding.” Basyrova and Cara Mckell had six steals combined in the win and were defensive anchors for their team as both players were playing full court press defense all four quarters despite the big lead Valencia held throughout the game. And junior Keira McLaughlin earned praise from her head coach after the game as not only was she tied for second in most points scored in the game with 13 but also had two blocks along with stops on defense that led to scoring possessions for Valencia. “I told her she has to be aggressive today because we knew they were going to try to implement a triangle in two, and she’s lethal out there,” Honig said. “They want to take away those two, well, now you’re leaving other people open. So, we just had to capitalize on that. And she’s outstanding. So, she mixed it up inside, hit the outside shot, get everyone involved.” During the first quarter, that aggressiveness that Honig stated was on display as McLaughlin blocked a Highlanders shot and in the following series, the Vikings capitalized off the turnover with a 3-pointer. In total, seven different Vikings scored in the win, and the ball was getting passed around to anyone that stepped on the court as the Basyrova and Mckell duo combined for eight assists. Freshman guard Sophia Sarkar also dished out three assists in the game as well as scored eight points in Thursday’s night win. With the win, Honig has his team right where the Vikings left off last season as Valencia won four out of their last five alongside an appearance in the Division 1 playoffs. And the competition is exactly where he wants his team as the competition is expected to get tougher for Valencia as the team wants to be ready for when the Foothill League season begins. “We have Brentwood next, and they’re one of the top teams in the state. We have Moorpark out in a Showcase than we have Redondo Union, who’s also supposed to be like D1 pushing for open division,” Honig said. “So, two out of the next three are against some of the top dogs. So, we’ll see how we measure up against those teams.” The Vikings play again on Saturday on the road against Brentwood with tip-off scheduled for 7 p. m.

Sporting Gijon vs Eibar Prediction and Betting Tips | November 16th 2025

Sporting Gijon vs Eibar: La Liga 2 Preview, Head-to-Head, and Prediction

Sporting Gijon will host Eibar at El Molinon on Sunday as part of the 2025-26 Spanish La Liga 2 campaign. The home side have experienced a rough patch in recent outings after a strong showing in October, currently sitting in ninth place with 19 points from 13 matches.

Their last match saw them suffer a 2-1 away defeat to a struggling Mirandes side. Sporting Gijon went into the break a goal up following a penalty kick from Jonathan Dubasin, but their opponents staged a second-half comeback to snatch all three points.

Meanwhile, Eibar have endured a slow start to their season and are under pressure to improve significantly if they want to avoid missing out on the promotion playoffs for a second consecutive season. They returned to winning ways last weekend with a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Albacete. Javier Marton and Jose Corpas were on the scoresheet, with Marton netting a brace.

Currently, Eibar sit 13th in the table, just two points above the drop zone. They will be keen to widen that gap by securing maximum points on the road this weekend.

Sporting Gijon vs Eibar Head-to-Head and Key Numbers

  • This Sunday’s game will mark the 50th meeting between Sporting Gijon and Eibar.
  • Sporting have won 22 of their previous matchups, while Eibar have claimed 13 victories.
  • There have been 14 draws, including their most recent encounter, which ended in a goalless stalemate.
  • Sporting Gijon are currently undefeated in their last six games against Eibar.
  • Eibar are one of just two teams in the Spanish second tier this season to have scored as many goals (15) as they have conceded.
  • The visitors have the second-worst away record in the division, having collected just one point from six road matches so far.

Match Prediction

Sporting Gijon’s recent defeat ended a five-game unbeaten streak, and they will be eager to bounce back on home turf. They have secured two wins and a draw from their last three games at El Molinon and will feel confident heading into this weekend’s clash.

Eibar have won two of their last three matches after a five-game winless streak. However, their poor form on the road could be a decisive factor, and they may struggle to get points from this game.

Prediction: Sporting Gijon 2-1 Eibar

Betting Tips

  • Tip 1 – Result: Sporting Gijon to win
  • Tip 2 – Goals Over/Under 2.5: Over 2.5 goals (Four of Eibar’s last five matches have featured more than 2.5 goals)
  • Tip 3 – Both Teams to Score: YES (Both teams have found the net in four of Eibar’s last five matches)

Adam Fox ready to take ‘bragging rights’ against Ryan Lindgren in Seattle reunion

SEATTLE — Saturday night will mark just the third time Adam Fox and Ryan Lindgren square off against one another as opponents. The longtime friends, who met as teenagers in the U.S. National Team Development Program, have not lined up on opposite sides of the ice since their college days during the 2017-18 season.

Back then, Lindgren and the University of Minnesota defeated Fox and Harvard in a back-to-back series in November. The Gophers first took a 4-2 victory before emerging with a 2-1 overtime win in the following game.

After reuniting and playing parts of six seasons together in New York, Saturday’s matchup will be the first time the two face off as NHL players since the Rangers traded Lindgren to Colorado in March.

“It’ll be funny,” Fox told The Post on Friday after practice at Climate Pledge Arena. “I obviously played with him at NTDP and then played against him once in college, and that was fun. It’s more a little bit of bragging rights and stuff. It’s been a while since I played against him. But, you know, he’s great. We’ll see him [Friday night], hang out with him. I mean, there will be knowing Lindgren no friendships on the ice [Saturday night]. It’ll be fun.”

“I think we’re all happy for him, we miss him. But, obviously, we’re more focused on the game, but it’ll be fun to play against him.”

Lindgren hosted a few of his former teammates at his place in Seattle on Friday night. The Rangers will also face Kaapo Kakko for the first time since the club’s second-overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft was traded to Seattle in December. Kakko is expected to make his season debut against his former team after recovering from a broken hand suffered during the preseason.

**Check out the latest NHL standings and Rangers stats.**

This season is shaping up as a tour against former Blueshirts, and this is only the beginning. For Fox, however, Saturday’s game feels especially different given his history with Lindgren, who was his longtime defensive partner.

“It was awesome,” Fox said of his friendship with Lindgren. “Obviously, it’s pretty rare in hockey with how many different directions and places you can go that our paths crossed on two different occasions. It’s amazing. He was a groomsman at my wedding and is super close to my family, and his family as well. We lived together for a few years, too. It’s special when you can have friendships like that.”

“Especially with how hockey goes — the business side of it — guys are in and out of different teams. To be with someone as long as we were was pretty cool for me.”

Since Lindgren was traded along with Jimmy Vesey and prospect Hank Kempf to the Avalanche in exchange for Juuso Parssinen, Calvin De Haan, and two conditional 2025 draft picks, Fox and Lindgren have naturally kept in touch. Not only did they live together for two to three years in New York, but their apartments were also next to each other during their rookie season in 2019-20. That proximity eventually led them to become roommates. They have also continued their annual golf trip together every summer.

Fox believes it will feel like nothing has changed when the former teammates reunite on Saturday.

Regarding his new defensive partner, Vladislav Gavrikov, Fox sounded encouraged by their first 12 games together.

“I think we’re defending really well,” Fox said. “Sometimes, especially when you’re at home and facing other teams’ top lines, defending is the priority. We want to maintain that solid defense while also creating more offense, considering how well that side has been going for us.”

“We don’t want to cheat on the defensive side. We’ve been getting chances, too. Anytime you’re with a new partner for the first time, you’re just trying to develop that chemistry, and it takes a lot of communication. I think it’s just gotten better as we’ve gone along.”

“Winning eight consecutive matches was the best moment” – Patna Pirates’ star reflects on the team’s stellar comeback in Pro Kabaddi 2025 [Exclusive]

**Ayan Lohchab Reflects on Patna Pirates’ Spectacular Comeback in Pro Kabaddi 2025**

Patna Pirates’ star raider Ayan Lohchab recently shared his thoughts on what he considers the best moment of the Pro Kabaddi 2025 season. Despite a challenging start, the Pirates staged an incredible turnaround to qualify for the Playoffs and advance all the way to Eliminator 3. Although they eventually fell short of making the final, losing to the Telugu Titans in the third Eliminator, their journey was nothing short of remarkable.

At one point in the season, the Patna Pirates were at the bottom of the league standings and on the brink of elimination. However, they defied the odds by winning five consecutive games to claw their way into the top eight, finishing seventh after the league stage. The Pirates didn’t stop there—they went on to win their first Play-in match and both Eliminator 1 and Eliminator 2, making it eight consecutive victories.

Reflecting on this historic run, Ayan Lohchab said in an exclusive interaction with Sportskeeda,
*”I think winning eight consecutive matches was the best moment for me. I don’t think any team would have won these many matches in a row. It was a very good comeback and this was the best moment.”*

The Pirates’ season began on a rocky note, winning only three out of their first ten games. Speaking about the turnaround, Ayan credited the team’s coach and management for their unwavering support throughout the campaign.

*”In the beginning, the team and the defense didn’t do well. We didn’t start well. Then our defense started working well, and the raiding team was doing well. So, our team made a comeback. And the coach and management also supported us, so it felt very good,”* he remarked.

He further added,
*”This is the thing—on our comeback and knowing we can bounce back from anywhere. Our management was very good. There was a lot of support from the team. We were winning 8 consecutive matches. We kept on playing. They kept on asking us to play our game. We didn’t have any pressure from the team. They kept on asking us to play our game.”*

Ayan Lohchab was instrumental in the Pirates’ resurgence, finishing the season as the best raider with 316 raid points from 22 matches, including 16 Super 10s.

Regarding the team’s ability to win consecutive high-pressure games, Ayan highlighted their fitness and mental strength. The Pirates faced multiple back-to-back matches during their winning streak, which demanded both physical endurance and resilience.

*”We had a very good camp. I think our team was the most fit. We played a lot of back-to-back matches. We worked well on it, that is why we could play so many games back-to-back, which were also do-or-die matches,”* he explained.

Despite his standout individual performances, Ayan emphasized that the team’s collective effort was the key to their success. He pointed out that personal achievements meant little unless the entire team performed as a cohesive unit.

Once again, he praised the coach and management for maintaining trust in the players even during the losing streak and for allowing them the freedom to play their natural game without pressure.

As the Patna Pirates look ahead, this inspiring comeback stands as a testament to their determination, teamwork, and the vital support system behind the scenes.

Andre Drummond drops ‘sick’ take on 76ers’ aggression to start season

The Philadelphia 76ers have kicked off the new NBA season with back-to-back wins and appear poised for a strong bounce-back campaign. Veteran center Andre Drummond recently credited an intense offseason as a major factor behind the Sixers’ early 2-0 record.

“This offseason has been hard for us,” Drummond told Tony Jones of The Athletic after Philadelphia’s 125-121 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday. “We were scrimmaging without calling fouls. No calls. Guys were just out there, hooping. We’ve been sick of playing against each other. It’s been good to go out there and take some aggression out on other teams.”

The 32-year-old has averaged 3.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 9.5 minutes over the first two games of the season. Drummond has provided valuable relief for the 76ers as the team works through health issues and manages Joel Embiid’s playing time restrictions.

“I’m thrilled that he was able to play so well,” said 76ers head coach Nick Nurse. “And now, I’m kind of wondering why I didn’t use him earlier. I knew that I would eventually have to use him again, because Joel was down to just a few minutes in the second half. I was trying to find some spark, and he gave it. All of a sudden, the rebounding got a lot easier. We got some extra possessions. He made some good contributions.”

Philadelphia has also been bolstered by the impressive play of rookie VJ Edgecombe. After dropping 34 points in the season opener against the Boston Celtics, the 20-year-old followed up with 15 points, six rebounds, and eight assists in the win over Charlotte.

The 76ers will look to build on their hot start when the Orlando Magic visit the City of Brotherly Love on Monday night.

Jets Rookies Rise as Red-Zone Struggles Continue

The New York Jets enter Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals not just chasing a win, but a true identity. Injuries, inconsistency, and constant lineup changes have forced head coach Aaron Glenn’s team to look inward. What they’ve found is a rookie class ready to rise and an offense struggling to finish drives.

### Rookie Secondary Becoming the Story

Despite all the talk about the Jets’ offensive frustrations, their defense—and especially their rookies—has reshaped the team’s narrative. With All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner sidelined by a concussion, third-round pick Azareye’h Thomas steps into the spotlight for his first career start.

It’s a trial by fire for the Florida State product, who faces one of the NFL’s most dangerous duos in Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Thomas showed his potential in limited snaps against Carolina. He allowed just two catches, broke up two passes, and stayed aggressive in man coverage when pressed into action.

Defensive coordinator Steve Wilks expressed full faith in the rookie. “You see the confidence, you see his ability,” Wilks said. “He’s not shying away from the positions we’re putting him in. We have a lot of confidence in him, and his teammates do too.”

Rookie safety Malachi Moore also continues to grow. He logged 71 snaps in Week 7 and delivered his first career pass breakup with a hit that jarred the ball loose. His versatility lets Wilks move him around at safety, nickel, or dime. That flexibility has helped the defense hold opponents under 180 passing yards in back-to-back games.

The Jets don’t just aim to survive without Gardner — they want to prove the system works. Their defensive identity no longer depends on one star. It now thrives on depth, discipline, and young players who look comfortable under pressure.

### Offense Still Searching for a Finish Line

While the defense rises, the offense continues to stall inside the red zone. Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand didn’t sugarcoat it this week: “What we’re working on every day is finishing.”

Through seven games, the Jets sit 16th in the NFL in red-zone touchdown rate at 57 percent. They’ve played two straight games without scoring a touchdown inside the 20. Even worse, they’ve crossed midfield six times on opening drives this season and ended up with four field goals and zero touchdowns.

“It’s about being detailed with our craft,” Engstrand said. “We need to sustain those opening drives and finish each one in the end zone.”

That slow start continues to pile pressure on a defense already carrying the load. The Jets compete hard, but they don’t close — and that’s the difference between a good team and a playoff one.

Facing a Cincinnati team that just exploded for 470 yards and 33 points behind 40-year-old Joe Flacco, the Jets can’t afford to settle for threes when the Bengals are scoring sevens.

### A Defining Moment for the Jets

For a franchise built on grit and near-misses, this game goes beyond another measuring stick. It’s a moment to prove the foundation works — from Thomas’ assertive coverage to Engstrand’s renewed red-zone focus.

If the rookies keep exceeding expectations and the offense finally finishes drives, the Jets can turn potential into legitimacy. If not, familiar ghosts—wasted defensive dominance and offensive inefficiency—will return.

The future has already arrived. Now the Jets must prove they can finish what they’ve started.

Florida Panthers Coach’s ‘Fear’ Admission Amid Injury Concerns

The Florida Panthers are the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions, and many believe they have the potential to win a third straight title. However, the team is not currently at full strength. Head coach Paul Maurice was aware of this even before the Panthers’ 4-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.

Florida suffered a major blow when Aleksander Barkov tore his ACL during training camp. Matthew Tkachuk is still recovering from injuries he played through during the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Additionally, Thomas Nosek is out long-term, and the team announced on Wednesday that Dmitry Kulikov will miss five months due to injury.

Despite these setbacks, the Panthers have shown their quality early in the season. They won their first three games before dropping consecutive matches against the Philadelphia Flyers and the Red Wings. This is not a team to count out in the slightest.

At the same time, there is an uneasiness creeping in. Maurice emphasized that there is no arrogance in the locker room. His team understands they won’t simply coast through the season. While he doesn’t sense fear, he admits there is an undefinable feeling present. “That’s part of it,” Maurice said.

Panthers Find Focus Among Injuries

Florida’s talent can still carry them far. Brad Marchand has had an excellent start to the season, Sam Bennett is playing great and is the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner, and Sergei Bobrovsky remains dialed in despite the team’s recent losses.

However, talent can only take the Panthers so far when so many key players are sidelined. Even for a team this loaded, injuries of such magnitude are challenging to overcome. As a result, each player has to dial in their focus, much like Bobrovsky has done.

Maurice sees his team as focused — as much as they need to be. He hoped this mindset would develop through their offseason work, but admits that “focus out of necessity is still focus.” He explained, “My summer was, how do I get these guys back focused on the hard. Well, the injuries happened. Now everybody’s focused because we need to be.”

Paul Maurice Finds Potential Silver Lining

In a difficult situation filled with challenges, there are very few positives to take away. The Panthers are hurting, and there is concern their injury issues could persist. However, Maurice believes there is at least one silver lining as they look ahead to the playoffs.

“That’s the only thing we get out of this, because we’re going to have to scratch and claw to make the playoffs, because the division is that good,” he said.

Florida’s current standard is to make the playoffs at a minimum. Anything less would be considered a failure, even given the injury situation. It’s an uphill battle, but it’s one the Panthers are prepared to tackle head on.
