Arrests on first day of transit safety initiative ‘no surprise’: Winnipeg police

Winnipeg police say their new transit safety initiative has already borne fruit, with arrests occurring as early as Wednesday—the very day the project was announced.

Officers stationed at the Unicity Transit Hub made two separate arrests on launch day. In one incident, a 37-year-old man was apprehended as he attempted to board a bus to flee with goods stolen from a nearby business. The man was charged with theft under $5,000.

“It comes as no surprise to us,” said Supt. Brian Miln. “There’s a direct link to our transit strategy, as some individuals involved in retail crime use transit as a means to leave the area after committing shoplifting and theft inside retail outlets.”

The second incident involved a report from a transit driver who witnessed a man smash a bus window with his elbow. Police patrolling the hub quickly tracked down the 35-year-old suspect, who was charged with mischief under $5,000.

Additionally, police found flammable liquid and a lighter on the man, items he was banned from possessing under the conditions of a release order. He was subsequently charged with failing to comply with those conditions and taken into custody.

Although the transit safety initiative has only been in place for a few days, Miln said public response has been positive so far. “We’ve had a couple of people reach out to us through various means—emails, phone calls, etc.—who are very pleased to see a police presence on buses, saying the initiative is very welcome and overdue.”

The campaign was launched in response to a record high number of violent crimes recorded on transit buses and around bus shelters last year—more than triple the numbers reported in 2019. Authorities say this troubling trend is continuing.

The ramped-up police presence involves both uniformed and plainclothes officers and will focus on routes and stops flagged as problem areas to enhance safety for transit users.

Ajwain, also known as carom seeds, is a staple in many kitchens thanks to its unique flavor and digestive properties. This tiny seed can elevate the taste of various dishes, adding an aromatic and flavorful touch. Here are five ajwain-infused recipes that are not only easy to make but also delicious. Each recipe highlights the versatility of ajwain, making it an essential ingredient in your cooking repertoire.

### 1. Ajwain Paratha Delight

Ajwain paratha is a simple yet flavorful flatbread that pairs well with any meal. To make this dish, knead wheat flour with water, salt, and crushed ajwain seeds into a smooth dough. Divide the dough into small portions, roll each into flatbreads, and cook on a hot griddle until golden brown on both sides. The aroma of ajwain makes these parathas irresistible, and they taste great when served with yogurt or pickles.

### 2. Spiced Ajwain Rice

This aromatic rice dish complements any curry or can be enjoyed on its own. Start by cooking basmati rice until fluffy. In a separate pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds, finely chopped onions, and green chilies. Once the onions turn golden brown, add crushed ajwain seeds and the cooked rice. Gently toss everything together, taking care not to break the rice grains.

### 3. Ajwain-Flavored Lentil Soup

Perfect for chilly days, ajwain-flavored lentil soup is both comforting and warming. Boil red lentils with turmeric powder until soft. In another pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, followed by chopped garlic and grated ginger. Add crushed ajwain seeds for extra flavor before mixing this tempering into the boiled lentils. Season with salt to taste and enjoy.

### 4. Crispy Ajwaini Potato Wedges

These crispy ajwaini potato wedges make a fantastic snack or side dish. Cut potatoes into wedges and coat them with olive oil. Sprinkle salt, pepper, and a generous amount of ajwain powder over the wedges. Bake at a high temperature until they turn crispy on the outside yet remain tender inside.

### 5. Refreshing Ajwain Lemonade

Keep cool on hot days with this refreshing ajwain lemonade. Crush fresh mint leaves and mix them with lemon juice, sugar, and water in a pitcher. Add crushed ajwain seeds for an intriguing twist. Stir well and serve chilled over ice cubes for a refreshing experience.

**Wolves Secure New Deal for Striker Jørgen Strand Larsen**

*By Rajdeep Saha | September 19, 2025, 6:17 PM*

Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) have secured the future of their star striker, Jørgen Strand Larsen, by signing a new contract extension that will keep the Norwegian international at the club until 2030. The deal also includes an option for an additional year, further strengthening Wolves’ long-term plans.

### Career Progression and Recent Developments

Strand Larsen’s new contract comes just three months after his permanent transfer to Wolves. The striker initially joined the club on loan from Celta Vigo last season, making an immediate impact by scoring 14 goals. His impressive performances played a key role in helping Wolves avoid relegation, as they finished 16th in the Premier League.

This summer, Newcastle United made two bids for the striker—initially £50 million, followed by an increased offer of £55 million. However, both bids were rejected by Wolves, underscoring the club’s intent to keep their key forward.

### Current Status and Injury Update

Following his permanent signing for £23 million, Strand Larsen has started the season strongly, netting two goals in the EFL Cup victory over West Ham. Unfortunately, he has been sidelined for the last two games due to an Achilles injury. As Wolves prepare to face Leeds United this Saturday, the club remains hopeful that Strand Larsen will recover in time to boost their attacking options.

### Strand Larsen’s Statistics at Wolves

– **Premier League Appearances:** 37
– **Goals:** 14
– **Assists:** 4
– **All Competitions Appearances:** 41
– **Goals in All Competitions:** 16
– **Current Season:** 3 games, 2 goals

Jørgen Strand Larsen continues to be a vital part of Wolves’ squad, and with his new long-term contract, the club looks to build its future around the talented Norwegian striker.

Canada launching CUSMA review consultation Friday, LeBlanc says

Dominic LeBlanc announces that consultations on the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) will begin this Friday, ahead of a planned review of the North American trade pact next year. The Canadian trade minister stated that Ottawa will engage with provinces, territories, industry representatives, and workers in preparation for formal negotiations with the United States and Mexico scheduled for 2026.

An exemption for CUSMA-compliant goods has so far shielded much of Canada’s trade from U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff war. However, sectoral duties remain in effect in industries such as steel, aluminum, automotive, and softwood lumber.

LeBlanc noted that while Ottawa would be open to signing a broader deal with the U.S. should Washington propose terms beneficial to Canada, his immediate priority is addressing the existing sectoral tariffs.

Meanwhile, Carney and Sheinbaum emphasized that the upcoming trade agreement will complement CUSMA, strengthening cooperation among the three countries.
