MILAN Amiri is opening its first European flagship store, in Milan. The store follows the opening of the brand’s European headquarters in Milan earlier this year, marking the brand’s increased focus on the country and the continent. The interior design is evocative of classic luxury hotels, or private residences in the Hollywood Hills also evoking a movie set. The unit juxtaposes natural textures of wood and travertine and limestone on a checkered quartz floor, reminiscent of 1920’s architecture. Amiri footwear is displayed against pale green-toned onyx walls and shelves, tactile banquette seating in draped velvet in the background. Wallpaper and soft, pre-loved fabrics in muted hues contrast with sleek limestone and travertine shelving. A bespoke beveled glass bar and tapestry artworks woven into wooden boiserie feature on the lower floor. Vintage furniture and art objects Art Deco lamps, Terrazza sofas, vintage tables dot the flagship. This is the 30th store for the L. A.-based brand since debuting with its first flagship on Rodeo Drive in 2020. In 2019, Italian fashion group OTB founded by Renzo Rosso, took a minority stake in Amiri, founded by the designer in 2014. The brand has garnered a who’s who of celebrity fans including Justin Bieber, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys and Post Malone, to name a few. Amiri seasonally shows at Paris Fashion Week. Here, exclusively with WWD, the designer elaborates on the opening and the future of his brand. WWD: What are your thoughts on Milan? Why did you choose this city to open your first boutique in Europe, and what do you think of this specific location? Mike Amiri: Milan is a key fashion destination not just for us, but for the world. Opening this space here, for me, is a clear statement of where Amiri stands in the global luxury landscape. Italy is one of the central hubs of our manufacturing, and Milan is where we established our European office earlier this year, so opening our first European flagship here was in complete alignment. The energy of Milan has always connected with my idea of Amiri craftsmanship, a tailoring tradition, a sense of dynamic modernity. It’s an amazing space, that enables us the scope to create a retail environment that really expresses the Amiri universe. It offers visitors a sense of openness, but also discovery. WWD: How would you describe the interior design and how does this boutique differs from other Amiri stores? M. A.: Including this new Milan flagship, our retail network now comprises 31 standalone boutiques globally and these are for us, a fundamental opportunity for storytelling through an entire immersive environment. A lot of people speak about the “experiential,” and that is important for us coming from Hollywood, for me there’s a sense of these spaces as almost like set pieces, or stages to help us convey our brand narrative. They are a key context for the clothes, to help bring a visitor into our world. This retail space has a number of distinct identities, for different facets of our product offering but also different expressions of creativity. It’s also a melding of worlds references to America’s West Coast, our birthplace, our home and our adopted home here of Milan. So there are nods to the 1920s, a sleek elegance of design, combinations and juxtapositions of different tactile surfaces like limestone, marble, velvet, wood boiseries and custom tapestries, that create panoramas for our clients to explore. In all our retail spaces, we try to have some kind of response to the local community, to create something unique and tailored to that space, that culture. I love that this space feels like it could be either an Italian palazzo, or a private home, or a luxurious hotel in the Hollywood Hills. It’s transporting. WWD: Where would you like to open new stores in the near future? Are there any projects already underway? M. A: For me, it’s less about rapid expansion and more about placing boutiques where the culture feels aligned. I want every opening to be intentional, a space that contributes to the local creative dialogue rather than simply occupying a name on a map. We have been expanding around the world across the past 12 months and while we have plans to continue expanding next year, for now, our focus is on this milestone of our Milan flagship, and this new footprint in Europe. WWD: How many wholesale points of sale currently carry Amiri? M. A.: Our wholesale network comprises approximately 150 luxury accounts, operating across nearly 400 points of sale worldwide. It’s a true reflection of Amiri’s global reach and resonance with cultures and communities. WWD: What are the brand’s bestsellers? M. A.: Our bestsellers truly span categories total looks resonate with our clients, which is something satisfying, that they want to buy into the entirety of our Amiri vision, and feel a true part of our world. Tailoring is also one of our strongest segments, for both men and women, day and evening our clients respond to the craftsmanship Inherent to that, and it’s become a hallmark of Amiri, and one of our signifiers. Additionally, accessories are experiencing particularly rapid growth, especially footwear and women’s bags, which are a key category for us. Alongside the innovation we showcase in our runway shows, we’re building on enduring signatures, season after season, and our clients are responding. WWD: What are your personal dreams or long-term ambitions?.

The US economy added 119,000 jobs in September, but unemployment rose to a nearly four-year high
(CNN) A long-awaited jobs report offered a mixed picture of the US labor market. The economy added 119, 000 jobs in September, an unexpected rebound for the labor market but it comes as the overall economy shows signs of slowing. Economists were expecting 50, 000 jobs to have been added and an unemployment rate that remained at 4. 3%, according to FactSet. Delayed for seven weeks due to the government shutdown, the latest snapshot of America’s job market showed that unemployment rose in September to the highest level in nearly four years. In addition, August’s tepid job gains of 22, 000 were revised to a job loss of 4, 000 jobs and July was revised down by 7, 000 jobs, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Thursday. The health care and social assistance sector continued to drive overall employment growth. Those sectors added an estimated 57, 100 jobs in September, accounting for nearly half of the overall gains. Leisure and hospital contributed 47, 000 jobs during a month with unseasonably warm weather. Jobs were lost in sectors such as transportation and warehousing (-25, 300), temporary help services (-15, 900) and manufacturing (-6, 000). Although the September employment data has been on the shelf since early October, it provides a critical snapshot of the labor market at a time when tariffs, stubborn inflation and elevated interest rates continue to slow the US economy. Plus, Thursday’s report might very well be the last clean jobs report for a couple of months, since the shutdown mucked up the finely tuned process of data collection and analysis during October and part of November. The BLS on Wednesday announced that there will not be a separate October jobs report published but instead some of that data will be included in the November report scheduled for December 16. Despite the stronger-than-expected September gains bolstered in part by warm weather that supported strong leisure and hospitality employment this year is still on pace for the weakest employment growth since the pandemic and, before that, the Great Financial Crisis. This story is developing and will be updated. The-CNN-Wire™ & ©.

First American Nuclear plans to bring SMRs to Indiana
First American Nuclear and Indiana leadership announced Tuesday that the company will bring its headquarters, manufacturing facilities, and an energy park to the state.
“Indiana is leading the nation in the next chapter of American energy independence,” Gov. Mike Braun said in a news release. “With First American Nuclear planting its roots here, we’re bringing 5,000 high-paying, generational Hoosier jobs while cementing our state as a leader in clean, reliable nuclear power.”
### What is First American Nuclear?
First American Nuclear is a company dedicated to building small modular reactors, or SMRs, which are advanced nuclear reactors that have about one-third the generating capacity of traditional nuclear power reactors, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The company’s energy park is designed to be the first “closed-fuel cycle” in U.S. history, meaning it will reprocess and reuse spent nuclear fuel on-site, eliminating 97% of long-lasting nuclear waste.
EAGL-1, the reactor planned to be used, can create more fuel than it burns, according to First American Nuclear. This capability positions the energy to be classified as clean and renewable.
“In the flurry of America’s nuclear renaissance, Indiana and FANCO found a shared commitment to technical merit, authenticity, and follow-through,” said Mike Reinboth, CEO of First American Nuclear. “Collectively, our team has dedicated centuries to nuclear science, resulting in an unmatched nuclear solution that, fittingly, will take root in the crossroads of America.”
### Opposition and Concerns
Kerwin Wilson, executive director of the Citizens Action Coalition, expressed skepticism about nuclear power’s ability to meet Indiana’s energy demands. He also questioned claims about its cleanliness.
“They are not even close to being cost-effective with other fuels and technologies, not to mention that they are years away from being commercially available, if they ever will be,” Wilson stated. “They are not a solution to meeting the growing electric demand. Affordable, clean, and truly safe technologies, like wind and solar, are available today. There’s no need to squander billions in ratepayer and taxpayer money down the nuclear rabbit hole and expose our communities to the inherent dangers and risks of the nuclear fuel cycle. There’s a better path forward.”
Similarly, Ashley Williams, executive director of Just Transition Northwest Indiana, called SMRs “a fantasy of the nuclear industry” and a false solution.
“Indiana’s so-called energy priorities are nothing short of shameful,” Williams said. “These aren’t the priorities of everyday Hoosiers. They’re the agenda of Big Tech Billionaires, cashing in on the data center boom that is actively extracting from our communities and displacing our workforce in places like my community of Michigan City and across the country.”
### Supporting Studies and Site Selection
A Purdue University study, funded by the Indiana Office of Energy Development and released in November 2024, found that SMRs can release carbon-free electricity with the capacity to meet Indiana’s growing energy needs. The study also evaluated multiple coal plants as suitable sites.
Purdue received $300,000 to complete the report, according to the state’s Transparency Portal.
In the study, RM Schahfer in Jasper County was identified as a suitable site. Two other NIPSCO plants—Bailly in Porter County and Michigan City’s plant in LaPorte County—were also considered; however, Bailly was deprioritized, and Michigan City was deemed “too populated” and unsuitable for SMRs.
### Company Plans and Timelines
A spokesperson for First American Nuclear shared via email that the company is currently seeking sites for its corporate headquarters, manufacturing facility, and energy park, although no final decisions have been made.
Construction for both the manufacturing and energy park sites is expected to begin in 2028.
Regarding economic and tax incentives, the spokesperson declined to provide specific figures but stated that the company is benefiting from incentives offered to all Indiana businesses. These include tax credits for builders of SMRs and research and development initiatives.
“Indiana has a highly business-friendly environment, affordable cost of living, advantageous central location, and deep pool of tech talent,” the spokesperson said. “It’s premature to provide actual numbers, but First American Nuclear is benefiting from incentives offered to all Indiana businesses.”
### Utility Perspective
In a January statement, NIPSCO said it is amid a multiyear plan to close its coal-fired generating stations and replace them with more cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable sources, including wind, solar, and battery storage.
In 2024, NIPSCO conducted four Requests for Proposal (RFP) events covering all fuel sources but did not receive any proposals for SMR projects, according to Post-Tribune archives. The utility received a total of 116 proposals.
NIPSCO was unavailable for immediate comment regarding First American Nuclear’s plans or whether any of its facilities might be considered for nuclear power.

As Indiana embarks on this next chapter of energy development, the debate continues between proponents advocating for advanced nuclear technologies and opponents urging investment in existing renewable solutions. The coming years will reveal how these initiatives shape the state’s energy future.
