Union start fast, extinguish Fire to clinch best-of-3 series

The start couldn’t have been much worse Saturday night for the Chicago Fire. Three first-half goals by the Philadelphia Union, including two by Tai Baribo, and a missed Fire penalty led the Union to a 3-0 win. The top seed in the Eastern Conference clinched the best-of-3 first-round series in just two games.

The Union now await the winner of the series between No. 4 New York City FC and No. 5 Charlotte. Charlotte survived a tense penalty shootout on Saturday to push their series to a decisive Game 3. With the international break approaching, the Union will be off until November 22 or 23.

This win marks just the second road playoff victory in club history for the Philadelphia Union, joining their Game 2 win in the 2023 best-of-3 series in New England. The Union’s all-time road playoff record now stands at 2-5-1. Fortunately for them, they won’t have to leave Subaru Park for the remainder of the postseason.

Saturday’s game was effectively over early on, arguably as soon as Fire goalkeeper Chris Brady was ruled out due to an injury suffered in training during the week. Jeffrey Gal had to step in as Brady’s replacement.

The scoring got underway in the 8th minute when Tai Baribo intercepted a ball off Gal’s foot at the top of the box and calmly rolled it into an open net. Baribo doubled the lead in the 16th minute by heading home a corner delivered by Kai Wagner, beating former teammate Jack Elliott to the spot.

Baribo is now just the second Union player to score multiple goals in a playoff game, joining Jack Elliott who did so in the 2022 MLS Cup final.

The scoreline reached 3-0 in the 31st minute. Milan Iloski pressured Gal while he was in possession, deflecting a pass straight to Bruno Damiani, who one-timed a volley into the open goal. That goal basically sealed the match.

There were a few notable moments despite the one-sided score. In the 29th minute, Jack Elliott was pulled down inside the box by Jovan Lukic, leading to a penalty kick. Brian Gutierrez stepped up to take it but sent a weak shot directly into the arms of Union keeper Andre Blake.

For Blake, this was his first penalty save in open play since the start of the 2023 Leagues Cup and his first stop against an MLS opponent since July 3, 2022.

Three minutes after the missed penalty, Damiani’s goal proved to be the backbreaker for the Fire.

Early in the second half, Gutierrez appeared to have scored when he charged down a Blake goal kick and nudged the ball into the net, but the goal was disallowed as it hit his arm. Referee Jon Freemon immediately waved off the goal.

Besides the goalkeeper change, Chicago Fire adjusted their formation from a back three—used successfully for more than 60 minutes in Game 1—to a back four. Midfielder Romingue Kouame was forced off with an injury in the 26th minute.

The Fire also had to deal with a change in venue. Instead of playing at their usual home of Soldier Field, the team played at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, a stadium they vacated as full-time tenants in 2019 and where they have played only five games this year. Soldier Field was unavailable due to being booked for an international rugby match.

The second half saw little action on the field but was twice interrupted due to homophobic chants from some Fire fans. These incidents required coach Gregg Berhalter and players to appeal directly to the supporters’ section to stop the inappropriate behavior.

WATCH: Speaker Johnson Exposes How Schumer Just Got Some Really, Really Bad News from CNN

American Tribune ^ | November 01, 2025 | Adam Stanton

**Speaker Mike Johnson Blasts Democrats Over 29-Day Government Shutdown**

With an epic rhetorical flourish, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) slammed the Democrats for the ongoing 29-day government shutdown, calling out their rejection of 14 clean continuing resolutions (CRs) that would fund essential services including the troops, SNAP, WIC, TSA, air traffic controllers, and nuclear defense workers.

Johnson highlighted a recent poll revealing that over 70% of the public feels Democrats are out of touch. He also pointed out that major unions, such as the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and the Teamsters, are urging Democrats to reopen the government.

The Speaker referred to the SNAP-only lawsuit as a “scam” aimed at prolonging pain for political leverage against the “far left.”

Starting his comments, Speaker Johnson said, “Day 29 of the Democrats’ shutdown, and things are getting really tough for the American people.” He underscored the immediate impact, noting that “more air traffic controllers, TSA agents, and park rangers are about to go without a paycheck.”

Continuing his criticism, Johnson described the consequences of the Democrats’ actions as selfish. “You’ve got families and children who rely upon SNAP benefits that are going to go hungry here at the end of the week. The Democrats own every one of these consequences,” he declared.

Johnson emphasized how ordinary Americans have been turned into political pawns, stating, “Every day, they turn their backs on more and more hard-working American families to prolong their pain. They’ve now voted 14 times between the House and Senate to reject the clean, simple funding bill that would simply reopen the government. Fourteen times they have thumbed their nose at the American people.”

He referenced a CNN poll showing that Republican popularity is rising as Democrats falter, adding, “Democrats are openly admitting that this is their shutdown. The approval of Republicans in Congress is rising. Democrats in Congress have the lowest approval rating they have ever had. You need 218 votes. That’s exactly what we did on September 19.”

Johnson reiterated, “The Democrats are the only reason that the government is closed. They’re using the pain of the American people as their leverage.”

The Speaker further noted bipartisan pressure for reopening the government. “The largest union of federal workers, the American Federation of Government Employees, publicly urged Democrats to join Republicans and pass the House’s short-term funding bill.”

He continued, “A strong America requires a functioning government, one that pays its bills. The National Association of Air Traffic Controllers, the Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations, and the leader of the Teamsters—all called on Senate Democrats to end this shameful shutdown.”

Wrapping up, Johnson stated, “Senate Democrats knew the pain this would cause. They did not care. They shut the government down anyway to appease the far left. On Saturday, SNAP benefits will stop flowing, and tens of millions of Americans will be at risk of going hungry.”

Concluding his remarks, the Speaker criticized legal efforts to maintain SNAP benefits despite the shutdown. “Democrat attorneys general are suing to try to compel SNAP benefits despite the government being closed. There’s a much easier option. Just go do your job and fully fund all these programs by voting for the CR.”

FReeper Canteen ~ Sunday Chapel ~ RESERVATIONS ~ 02 November 2025

**Reservations**

Recently, someone stopped by my office, handed me two sheets of paper, and said something to the effect of, “You’re always sharing something with people; here’s something for you.” Then he was gone. Like so many encounters we have along life’s way, this one was brief. But it left a lasting impression and brightened my whole day. The article is definitely a “keeper.”

Originally written by Jonathan Lee for the *Washington Post*, it is entitled **”Reservations of an Airline Agent.”** Enjoy!

I work in the central reservation office of an airline company. After more than 130,000 conversations — all ending with “Have a nice day and thanks for calling” — I think it’s fair to say I’m a survivor.

I’ve made it through all the calls from adults who don’t know the difference between a.m. and p.m., from mothers of military recruits who didn’t trust their little soldiers to get it right, from the woman who wanted advice on how to handle her teenage daughter, from the man who wanted to ride inside the kennel with his dog so he wouldn’t have to pay for a seat, from the woman who wanted to know why she had to change clothes on our flight between Chicago and Washington (she was told she’d have to make a change between the two cities), and from the man who asked if I’d like to discuss the existential humanism that emanates from the soul of Habeeb.

My battles have included everything from a man not knowing how to spell the name of the town he was from, to another not recognizing “Iowa” as being a state, to another who thought he had to apply for a foreign passport to fly to West Virginia.

I talked to a woman in Denver who had never heard of Cincinnati; a man in Minneapolis who didn’t know there was more than one city in the South (“wherever the South is”); and a man in Dallas who tried to pay for his ticket by sticking quarters in the pay phone he was calling from.

A woman wanted to fly to Hippopotamus, NY. After assuring her there was no such city, she became irate and said it was a big city with a big airport. I asked if Hippopotamus was near Albany or Syracuse. It wasn’t. Then I asked if it was near Buffalo.

“Buffalo!” she said. “I knew it was a big animal.”

Then a man tried to catch our flight to Maconga. I told him I’d never heard of Maconga and we certainly didn’t fly to it. But he insisted we did, and to prove it he showed me his ticket: Macon, GA.

Half of the people will not have thought about when they’re returning. A third won’t know where they are going; 10 percent won’t care where they’re going. A few won’t care if they get back.

You just have to shake your head in amazement! But it reminds me of a time when Jesus talked with his apostles about a trip he was taking. As I recall, there was a lot of confusion about that trip as well.

> “I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”
> — John 14:2b-4

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going, and how can we know the way?” (John 14:5)

With all the patience of an airline ticket agent, Jesus said,
> “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
> — John 14:6

What a glorious trip lies ahead. I hope you’ve made your reservations!

Amen, and blessings on your journey.

Michael Che Calls SNAP Freeze ‘Really F–ed Up’: I Keep Seeing ‘Racist Videos Celebrating (Mostly Black) Families Not Being Able to Buy Groceries’

“Saturday Night Live” star Michael Che is speaking out against the suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which began on Saturday as a result of the now month-long government shutdown.

“This SNAP freeze is really fucked up,” Che wrote in an Instagram post Saturday. “And I keep seeing a lotta racist videos celebrating (mostly black) families not being able to buy groceries. There’s this weird idea that since some people have taken advantage of welfare benefits in the hood, NOBODY should receive help, at all? This country is built on greedy motherfuckers taking shortcuts and gaming the system to their benefit, but for some reason, when poor people find a way to turn a nickel into a dime, they’re judged more severely, especially Blacks.”

He continued, “I [know] the hustle is to hate each other here so we can fight in the comments and up our engagements, but let’s draw the line at feeding the poor. I grew up on free cheese and powdered milk and waiting for your friends to leave the store so they won’t see me pay with stamps. That shit ain’t as glamorous as it sounds. I promise.”

The government shut down on Oct. 1 after Republicans and Democrats failed to pass a funding bill for government services as the previous federal budget expired. In the Senate, Republicans are short 60 votes to pass the proposed bill, which gives Democrats a chance to fight back on key issues.

Forever Young wins Breeders’ Cup Classic horse race

DEL MAR, Calif., Nov. 1 (UPI) – Forever Young flew all the way from Japan to seek revenge in Saturday’s $7 million Grade I Breeders’ Cup Classic — and got it. The 4-year-old, who finished third in last year’s Kentucky Derby and third in last year’s Classic, seized the lead turning for home this time around. He opened a big advantage and held off last year’s winner, Sierra Leone, winning by half a length.

The race was truly one for the ages. The field included all of last year’s top three finishers, with 2024 runner-up Fierceness finishing third this year. Also in the gate were the second- and third-place finishers from the Kentucky Derby: Journalism, who finished fourth, and Baez, who came in sixth. The only notable absence was Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Sovereignty, who was scratched earlier in the week due to an infection.

Fierceness’ third-place finish in the 2024 Kentucky Derby came after a dramatic three-way photo finish but was impacted by repeated bumping from Sierra Leone, who finished second that day. In the Classic, Fierceness faced challenges as well, being compromised by the inside post position.

Jockey Ryusei Sakai, starting from the No. 5 gate this time, left no doubt and little room for mishap. He kept his colt clear of traffic just behind the early leaders and found plenty in reserve when he called on him during the turn.

Trainer Yoshito Yahagi noted that the main rivals in the Classic will be retired soon, saying, “This was my last chance. It was my dream to beat these horses.” Yahagi and owner Susumu Fujita have indicated that Forever Young will be aiming for the $20 million Group 1 Saudi Cup for the second year in a row.

If so, he might face another horse seeking revenge — Hong Kong’s Romantic Warrior, who finished second in this year’s Saudi Cup. Fans will be eagerly awaiting what promises to be another thrilling matchup on the international racing stage.
