Maine women’s basketball falls in season opener to St. Joseph’s

Adrianna Smith made an impressive return to the court in her first game since missing the entire last season due to a knee injury. The 2022-23 America East Player of the Year showcased her talent during the University of Maine’s season-opening 63-62 loss to Saint Joseph’s University on Friday in Orono.

Smith finished the game with an outstanding double-double, recording 25 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists. Despite Maine trailing 58-46 with just over four minutes left, Smith sparked a dramatic comeback. She initiated the rally with a three-pointer and later nailed a crucial layup with 24 seconds remaining, narrowing the Hawks’ lead to three.

Saint Joseph’s responded with two foul shots by Rhian Stokes, pushing their lead back to five. However, Smith answered again with another layup. Stokes added one of two free throws with 16 seconds left, but Asta Blauenfeldt sealed the game for the Black Bears with a buzzer-beating three-pointer as time expired.

Blauenfeldt contributed 16 points for Maine, while Sarah Talon of Windham added 10. Cheverus graduate Maddie Fitzpatrick, the 2024 Miss Maine Basketball winner who missed her freshman season due to injury, played 16 minutes but was held scoreless.

On the Saint Joseph’s side, Gabby Casey led with 19 points and nine rebounds. Faith Stinon scored 16 points, while both Rhian Stokes and Jill Jekot chipped in with 11 points each. The Hawks improved their record to 1-1 with the narrow victory.

Ryan Clark Predicts Conference-Altering SEC Upset in Week 11

Two teams sit atop the SEC standings through the first 10 weeks of the 2025 college football season: the 5-0 Texas A&M Aggies and the 5-0 Alabama Crimson Tide.

On Saturday, the No. 4 Crimson Tide will welcome the unranked LSU Tigers for a primetime contest under the lights at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama enters the game as a 9.5-point favorite over the visiting Tigers, who recently fired now-former head coach Brian Kelly after losing three of their last four games.

While LSU faces a tough task ahead in Tuscaloosa, there are some who believe the Tigers are trending in the right direction under interim head coach Frank Wilson.

In fact, ESPN analyst Ryan Clark believes his alma mater will mount a stunning road-game upset over Alabama on Saturday night.

“LSU is about to go into Alabama and win the game,” Clark said on ESPN’s *Get Up*. “Frank Wilson’s got it going different around there. What did he do, what’s the first thing he do? He called all the old players. Tells everybody to come back. He’s got Jacob Hester, the original No. 18, giving speeches to the team. New athletic director Verge Ausberry, who played on that very field, giving speeches to the team.

“We’re going into Alabama, fresh off of the bye week. You know what we was doing? Getting back to the basics. We was getting back to the basics. You know what else? The head coach, he ain’t got to fake an accent no more. He from New Orleans now.”

If LSU does pull off the upset, it could signal a shift of power atop the SEC, a conference dominated by Alabama, Georgia, and LSU since 2014.

Alabama has won each of its last seven games after starting the year with a season-opening loss to the Florida State Seminoles. The Crimson Tide have claimed victory in all five of their conference matchups, defeating Georgia, Vanderbilt, Missouri, Tennessee, and South Carolina in consecutive games.

Saturday night’s LSU-Alabama matchup will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Fans can expect an exciting primetime showdown as both teams vie for SEC supremacy.

Lakers Coach Gives Key Austin Reaves Injury Update

Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves is dealing with ankle discomfort but is expected to play Friday against the Minnesota Timberwolves, coach JJ Redick told reporters after Thursday’s practice.

“I know Austin and I expect him to play,” Redick said, per Lakers insider Jovan Buha. Reaves was a modified participant in the Lakers’ practice after he shone in their season-opening 119-109 loss to the Golden State Warriors.

The Lakers guard put up 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting, along with nine assists and five rebounds, showing his growing confidence and importance to the team’s offense. Despite the ankle discomfort, Reaves has a knack for playing through pain.

In one of their preseason matches against the Warriors, Reaves survived an injury scare after he collided with Golden State guard Brandin Podziemski.

“[Reaves] got kneed in the posterior anterior calf or somewhere around there,” Redick said at the time. “I think he just took a knee to his lower leg muscle. I think he’s fine.”

In the season opener, the Lakers — behind Luka Dončić and Reaves — were competitive despite missing LeBron James, who is still recovering from sciatica, until the third quarter.

### Reaves Addresses Lakers’ Ongoing Third-Quarter Struggles

Even after his strong performance, Reaves expressed frustration with a familiar issue: the Lakers’ inability to maintain intensity after halftime.

“We’ve just been bad in the third quarter,” Reaves said after the loss. “Last couple of years for sure, but I think ever since I’ve been here, we’ve had a problem with the third quarter. So, we’ve got to figure out a way to come out with a little more energy.”

Redick addressed the same concern postgame, challenging his players to take responsibility. Reaves agreed.

“That’s on us players, not the coaches,” Reaves said. “They come in here and give us the answers to the test, and we just didn’t come out and execute. We have to be better.”

The Lakers will have a chance to respond Friday in a playoff rematch against the Timberwolves — the team that eliminated them in five games in last season’s first round.

### Contract Year Adds High Stakes to Reaves’ Season

Reaves, 27, entered the season with more than just on-court motivation. He’s playing the final guaranteed year of his four-year, $54 million contract, which includes a $14.8 million player option for next season — one he is widely expected to decline.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst recently reported there is “a 0.0% chance” Reaves signs an extension and a “99.9% chance” he opts out of his deal next summer.

“Reaves has one of the best value contracts in the NBA,” Windhorst wrote, explaining that current extension rules cap his raise at 140% of his existing salary, or roughly $89 million over four years — far below his expected market value.

The Lakers have full Bird rights on Reaves, meaning they can offer him any salary up to the max to retain him, but competition is looming.

### Reaves Drawing Interest From Multiple Teams

According to The Athletic’s Dan Woike on The Zach Lowe Show podcast, Reaves is already drawing interest from rival teams preparing “lucrative offers” potentially exceeding $40 million per year.

According to ESPN front office insider Bobby Marks, there will be about 10 teams projected to have significant cap space next summer.

“If he has a good year, he could be a fringe All-Star candidate for sure,” Lowe said. “And honestly, the max is not out of the question.”

Woike added that with the expected cap spike, Reaves’ maximum salary offer from another team could start around $42 million per year.

“It’s him and Trae Young — those are the free agents everyone’s watching,” Woike said.

### Rising Star With Higher Stakes Ahead

Reaves’ rise from undrafted rookie to potential nine-figure free agent has made him one of the NBA’s most intriguing stories entering the 2025 season.

His mix of shooting, playmaking, and poise has made him a cornerstone of Redick’s new system and a priority for the Lakers to keep long-term.

For now, Reaves’ focus remains on the floor. Despite the ankle discomfort, he’s expected to suit up Friday, continuing to prove his value on both ends.

If his early-season form continues, Reaves won’t just be one of the Lakers’ most important players — he could be one of the NBA’s most expensive free agents by next summer.

Youmin Hwang birdies 5 of final 6 holes to win first LPGA Tour title in Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) — Youmin Hwang captured her first LPGA Tour victory on Sunday at the LOTTE Championship, making a strong late surge to extend the season-opening streak without a repeat winner to 25 tournaments.

A member of the Korean LPGA, Hwang competed on a sponsor invite and finished with a 5-under 67 at breezy Hoakalei Country Club. She birdied the final four holes and five of the last six to secure a one-shot victory over Hyo Joo Kim.

“Thanks to LOTTE’s support, I can be here and win,” Hwang said.

At just 22 years old and a non-member of the LPGA Tour, Hwang now has the option to accept immediate membership or defer it until next season. This win came in her sixth career LPGA start and fourth event of the season, after having made the weekend cuts in major U.S. tournaments.

Hwang was tied for the lead with Kim and Minami Katsu after birdieing the par-4 17th, then gained an advantage when both Katsu and Kim bogeyed the same hole in the group behind her. On the par-5 18th, Hwang’s second shot went through the green into the rough, but she recovered with a chip to within a foot and tapped in for birdie.

She finished the tournament at 17-under 271.

Hwang started the week strong with a career-best 62 on Thursday, opening a three-stroke lead. However, she shot a 75 on Friday, which dropped her into a tie for second place, just one shot behind Akie Iwai. Kim closed with a 68 after birdieing the 18th hole, while Katsu finished third at 15 under following a 69.

Canada’s Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ontario, finished in a four-way tie for 28th at 7 under, 10 shots behind the winner. Fellow Canadian Alena Sharp of Hamilton tied for 57th at 1 under.

World No. 2 Nelly Korda ended with a 69 to finish three shots back at 17 under, alongside Peiyun Chien (70), Jessica Porvasnik (70), and Akie Iwai (71). Despite coming off a season with seven victories, Korda is yet to win this year.

“Overall, I’m putting myself into contention,” Korda said. “It’s definitely an interesting year for me result-wise, but at the end of the day, I’m giving it 100 percent, controlling what I can control, and I’m happy with that.”

The LPGA Tour now moves to Asia for the next five consecutive weeks, with tournaments scheduled in Shanghai, South Korea, Malaysia, and Japan.
