Donations sought for Vaca veterans free Christmas Eve dinner

**Vacaville Veterans to Host Free Community Christmas Eve Dinner**

Come with an appetite and leave room for dessert! Vacaville military veterans will once again offer a free Community Christmas Eve dinner for the public. Volunteers and community members will serve hot holiday meals from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or until food runs out) on December 24 at the Vacaville Veterans Memorial Building, 549 Merchant St.

“We also look forward to welcoming Santa Claus, who will be on hand to provide toys to children attending with their parents,” said event co-chair Jeff Jewell in a press statement. Jewell, who shares the organizing duties with his wife Lynn and Lewis Derfuss, is the adjutant for American Legion Post 165.

**Meal Deliveries and Donations Needed**

A limited number of meals will be delivered to those unable to attend, if pre-ordered by noon on December 23. To arrange for a meal delivery, volunteer, or make a donation, please call the Veterans Memorial Building at (707) 447-6354 or visit [www.vacavets.org](http://www.vacavets.org). Jewell suggests calling ahead to ensure volunteers are available to accept donations.

Jewell notes that this program has been generously supported by the community in past years. Donations of turkeys, hams, rolls, desserts, and cash are all greatly appreciated—with financial contributions providing the greatest flexibility to purchase whatever is needed for the holiday meal. Volunteers will be at the Veterans Memorial Building Tuesdays through Sundays to accept donations and take sign-ups for meal deliveries.

**Help Restock for Christmas Eve**

Nearly 1,000 meals were served during the recent free Thanksgiving dinner, so there’s a strong need to restock supplies for Christmas Eve. “Now we can accept donations of turkeys and hams,” said Jewell, who marks his 37th year volunteering for the veterans’ holiday dinners. “I’m amazed at the community support.”

If you wish to donate turkeys or hams, please deliver them by December 17 so cooks have enough time to prepare them.

**How to Donate**

For those wishing to donate money, please note that Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7244 is funding the Christmas Eve program this year. Checks may be made payable to **VFW Post 7244** and mailed or delivered to 549 Merchant St., Vacaville, CA 95688. The Tax Identification Number is 94-2583926.

**Contact Information**

For more information, to request meal deliveries, to volunteer, or donate, call (707) 447-6354 or visit [www.vacavets.org](http://www.vacavets.org).

NYT ‘Pips’ Hints, Answers, And Walkthrough For Friday November 28

I made a hearty brunch on Thanksgiving, and while I prepared the meal, I put on Christmas music. So it begins. The holiday season is upon us. The year 2025 is coming to an end. Thanksgiving is in the rearview, and jolly Old Saint Nick is hard at work with his elves, reindeer, and the myriad contractors he must employ to keep everything in tip-top shape.

I doubt he has time for NYT Games puzzles, but we do. Let’s solve this Pips!

### Looking for Thursday’s Pips?
Read our guide right here.

## How To Play Pips

In Pips, you have a grid of multicolored boxes. Each colored area represents a different “condition” that you have to achieve. You have a select number of dominoes that you must use to fill in the grid. You must use every domino and satisfy every condition properly to win.

There are Easy, Medium, and Difficult tiers.

Here’s an example of a difficult tier Pips:

As you can see, the grid has a bunch of symbols and numbers with each color.

– On the far left, the three purple squares must **not** equal one another (hence the equal sign crossed out).
– The two pink squares next to that must equal a total of 0.
– The zig-zagging blue squares all must equal one another.

You click on dominoes to rotate them, and you will need to do so because they have to be rotated to fit where they belong.

### Additional Conditions

Not shown on this grid are other conditions, such as “less than” or “greater than.”

– **>** The pip in this tile (or tiles) must be greater than the listed number.

European markets head for lackluster open as investors take a breath

LONDON European markets are expected to see a lackluster mixed open on Thursday as investors take stock of the regional and global economic outlook. The U. K.’s FTSE index is seen opening a touch below the flatline, Germany’s DAX up 0. 2%, France’s CAC 40 up 0. 1% and Italy’s FTSE MIB a shade higher, according to data from IG. The somewhat unenthusiastic open for regional markets on Thursday comes after a positive trading session yesterday, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 closing almost 1. 1% higher and most sectors and major regional bourses in the green. Global markets have been boosted this week by rising expectations that the U. S. Federal Reserve will cut interest rates when it next meets on Dec. 9-10. Traders are pricing in a 84. 9% chance of a quarter percentage point cut from the Fed in December, according to the CME FedWatch tool. U. S. stocks rose on Wednesday, allowing the major averages to log their fourth straight day of gains ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Meanwhile, Asia-Pacific markets tracked Wall Street gains and India’s benchmark indexes hit a record high overnight. U. S. markets are closed Thursday for Thanksgiving. Trading will resume with a shortened session Friday, when the market will close at 1 p. m. ET. In Europe on Thursday, there are no major earnings reports. Data releases include Germany’s GfK consumer confidence survey and EU economic sentiment data.

Interstate 5 drivers can expect record-breaking travel, increased CHP presence over Thanksgiving

Commuters on Interstate 5 this week may have noticed a significant uptick in traffic over the past few days. California Highway Patrol officials said that they’re expecting more traffic on the I-5 this week as motorists travel for the Thanksgiving holiday. CHP has designated the period between 6 p. m. Tuesday to Sunday at midnight as a Holiday Enforcement Period, or a period of increased presence on the road in the midst of higher travel activity. The holiday weekend also overlaps with one of CHP’s Maximum Enforcement Periods this year, said Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, a spokesman for the CHP’s Newhall-area Office. “During the HAPs and MAPs release last week that it projected local residents would be traveling in record-breaking numbers during the Thanksgiving holiday period. “(Auto Club) projects 6. 78 million local residents will travel 50 miles or Out of those 6. 78 million travelers, 5. 88 million of them are expected to be traveling by car, according to the release, a 2. 7% increase over Auto Club’s 2024 car travel numbers. Burgos-Lopez said CHP officers will be focusing on DUIs and assisting disabled motorists, and that motorists should keep the expected holiday travel conditions in mind. “Just be aware that it’s obviously a travel time of the year for Thanksgiving and Christmas. They’re going to come across a lot more traffic than expected,” Burgos-Lopez said. Officer Erik Larsen with CHP Traffic Management confirmed that there were no wind advisories, upcoming California Department of Transportation closures or rain expected in the Santa Clarita Valley corridor during the Thanksgiving travel period.

Thanksgiving turkey recipe 2025: Cook your bird in under an hour

By Tan Vinh, The Seattle Times SEATTLE Teriyaki chicken is a quick and cheap lunch that’s synonymous with Seattle. One acclaimed local chef, Taichi Kitamura of Eastlake’s Sushi Kappo Tamura, makes a compelling case for elevating that humble poultry dish into a fancy Thanksgiving feast. Teriyaki chicken is only made with dark meat. That rule also applies to turkey teriyaki, since the breast meat will dry out, the chef said. Kitamura offered us a pan-fried turkey breast recipe, too, with a sake-and-butter sauce. He typically fries the turkey breast while the rest of the meat roasts in the oven. All told, the entire turkey was cooked and ready to be eaten in less than an hour. We asked for both recipes and printed them below. Enjoy! Thanksgiving turkey teriyaki Ingredients 2 turkey thighs, deboned 2 turkey wings 2 cups soy sauce 2 cups sake 1 1/4 cups sugar 2 cups water 2 cups hot water 1/3 cup of whiskey (optional) Steps 1. Break down the turkey by chopping it down the middle, cutting off the hindquarters (thighs and drumsticks) and separating the thighs from the drumsticks. 2. Turn the bird over and cut off the breast from the rib cage and then chop the wings that are attached to the breasts. (A turkey has the same anatomy as a chicken, so if you’re more of a visual learner, head to YouTube for step-by-step instructions on breaking down a bird.) 3. Then comes the deboning. Detach the bone by trimming the edge of the meat where it meets the bone. The rest is less labor-intensive. (No need to debone the wings, since they cook faster.) 4. Score the meat with the tip of the knife. 5. For the marinade: In a large mixing bowl, add the hot water and sugar; whisk until all the sugar is dissolved. 6. Add soy sauce, sake, whiskey and water. Let the teriyaki sauce cool before marinating the meat. 7. Marinate the turkey for 12-16 hours in fridge. 8. On Thanksgiving Day, remove the turkey from the marinade. Towel it dry. 9. Lay the meat on a flat rack/grid over a pan, skin side up. A rack or grid over the pan helps keep the turkey from getting soggy from all the fat drippings. The rack helps crisp up the skin, too. 10. Roast the turkey in an oven (preferably a convection oven) preheated to 475 degrees until the temperature of the thickest part of the meat reaches 165 degrees. If using a conventional oven, heat the oven to 450 degrees. 11. Depending on the size of your turkey and your oven, you may need to use two trays or cook in batches. 12. Cut into 3/4-inch slices and serve. Pan-fried turkey breast Ingredients 2 turkey breasts, deboned 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1 stick of butter, cut into 8 pieces 1 1/4 cups sake 1/2 cup soy sauce Salt and black pepper to taste 3 bay leaves 2 tablespoons lemon juice Steps 1. Butterfly the breast meat to an even width of about an inch thick or less. 2. Score the skin with the tip of the knife. 3. Season with salt and pepper. 4. In a large frying pan or skillet, heat vegetable oil. 5. Place the turkey skin side down on medium-high heat, cooking until the skin is golden-brown. 6. The turkey will be too large to cook on one skillet, so cook each breast separately or use two skillets. 7. Turn the turkey and cook the meat until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. Remove from the pan. 8. Deglaze the pan with sake. Add the bay leaves, soy sauce, lemon juice and butter. Add the juice from the cooked turkey if there is any. Stir vigorously with a spoon to emulsify. 9. Cut the turkey into 3/4-inch strips. Place on a platter. 10. Pour the sauce over the turkey and serve. ©2025 The Seattle Times. Visit seattletimes. com.

Stay and starve or escape on Route 66

A true American story on grit and perseverance. Happy Thanksgiving! If you were a farmer in middle America during the 1930s, life was tough. Depression, drought, disease and default combined to create traumatic times in the United States like no other. John Steinbeck’s depiction of a victimized family, the Joads, in his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Grapes of Wrath, told a sad tale with captivating prose. They were Okie’s from Oklahoma trying to survive the times and live another day. The Dust Bowl was produced by lack of rain and howling winds sweeping over the land, stripping what little fertile topsoil the southern plains had. Families had suffered with poor crop yields and low prices for years. Now, the weather and banks made properties unsurvivable, properties owned by men whose fathers and grandfathers probably planted their roots their during the 1895 Oklahoma land rush. To vacate the family claim meant you failed both, loved ones and your ancestors. My father and I didn’t see eye to eye on many things through my early years. We, however, became best buds once he finally grew up and started to appreciate my dry humor and insincerity. As age crept in, around Christmas we would play a game. I would come up with a really cool gift for us to do together, usually involving venturing to someplace of mutual interest, preferably by train. Then, gratefully, at the end of our adventure he would slyly slip me a check covering the costs, thanks Dad! One year we took Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, going from Kansas City to Los Angeles, then the Coast Starlight north along the Pacific shore towards San Francisco. As a side note, Amtrak’s tracks along the coast near Santa Barbara were inside Highway 1, right on top of the beach. We were having breakfast just outside of LA when I thought I saw it . no, it’s early, I shook my head. Then as I stared out over the beautiful blue Pacific, there it was again and again. Turns out it’s a thing in Southern California when you are on the beach to moon Amtrak! Who knew! I saw new moons, half moons, full moons and craters! Sorry, let me back up, I was a little too excited to get that story out. Once we got to Albuquerque the train basically paralleled Route 66 for the next 800 miles across open desert on our way to Santa Monica. Crossing the Mojave Desert at night was like being on the moon, staying up till dawn, I was mesmerized. Never had I seen so many shades of grey. The bright stars cast shadows in artful designs and rock formations reaching for those stars standing like statues. I thought of the Joads on that dark lonely highway. Steinbeck brilliantly described what those starving yet striving modern nomads had to endure in those incredible years. The depression affected the poorest class the hardest. Ma Joad did everything she could to keep her family together through death, desertion and discord. To her it was all about the family. This was yet another great migration in U. S. history, such as those roaming west in the mid-1800s and southern Blacks heading north to industrial cities for work in the early 20th century. It’s all about making the commitment and getting started. In the bluffs on the California Trail one day out from a wagon train’s starting point, St. Joseph, is a cemetery with several pioneer graves. Perhaps those buried family elders accepted death willingly knowing their loved ones were on their way, taking the risk and heading off to a better life. Like most others, the Joads had lost their farm in the Dust Bowl to wind and drought, then finally foreclosure, which meant the bulldoze. It seems like such a thing couldn’t happen in this country to our fellow Americans, but it did. Steinbeck came under scrutiny for his book. The Grapes of Wrath was banned in several library districts including many in California where he described “Hooverville Camps,” for displaced workers more like inhumane Labor camps. Farm Labor associations’ brutal tactics were also outed and they fired back. Steinbeck received death threats. He started carrying a gun as instructed by his local sheriff. Politicians weren’t happy about the book either, Oklahoma Congressman Lyle Borem denied that this could happen in his state, “A lie, a black, infernal creation of a twisted, distorted mind.” Nonetheless, the Joads and 200, 000-plus anguished families saw heading west on Route 66 as their only salvation, adapt or die. Steinbeck called the Route the Mother Road, I like to call it the Highway of Hope, we humans always have to have hope. The act of relocating under such conditions is heart wrenching. Some in a family no doubt realize they have no choice, while others held on, not believing all the promises those cherished hand bills from California professed. Men in particular struggled with leaving, no matter who’s fault it was. The Joads along with thousands of other poor migrants piled their earthly belongings into the family “bucket of bolts,” and headed out on 66. Steinbeck didn’t mince words, there were breakdowns, hunger, death and discrimination on the road. At times humanity seemed to be lost. The first half of the exodus was bearable, but coming up for the Joads in their rickety jalopy were 100 miles of isolation, the Mojave Desert. Join us next time on Route 66, a highway that answered many people’s dreams.

Another rally for Alphabet leads the US stock market higher

NEW YORK (AP) The U. S. stock market is rising again on Monday, for now at least, ahead of a week with shortened trading because of the Thanksgiving holiday. The S&P 500 climbed 0. 9% and added to its jump from Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 72 points, or 0. 2%, as of 10 a. m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 1. 7% higher. Stocks got a lift from rising hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut its main interest rate again at its next meeting in December, a move that could boost the economy and investment prices. The market also benefited from strength for stocks caught up in the artificial-intelligence frenzy. Alphabet, which has been getting praise for its newest Gemini AI model, rose 5. 6% and was one of the strongest forces lifting the S&P 500. Nvidia slipped 0. 3% after bobbing up and down. An early gain for the U. S. stock market guarantees nothing, though, as the last few weeks have so painfully shown. Stocks have been swinging sharply, not just day to day but also hour to hour, as worries weigh about what the Fed will do with interest rates and whether too much money is pouring into AI and creating a bubble. Even within Monday’s first 15 minutes of trading, the S&P 500 rallied to a gain of 1% and then halved it. All the uncertainty is creating the biggest test for investors since an April sell-off, when President Donald Trump shocked the world with his “Liberation Day” tariffs. Still, despite all the recent fear, the S&P 500 remains within 3. 3% of its record set last month. Several more tests lie ahead this week for the market, though none loom as large as last week’s profit report from Nvidia or the delayed jobs report from the U. S. government for September. One of the biggest will arrive Tuesday, when the U. S. government will deliver data showing how bad inflation was at the wholesale level in September. Economists expect it to show a 2. 6% rise from a year earlier, the same inflation rate as August. A higher-than-expected reading could deter the Fed from cutting its main interest rate in December for a third time this year, because lower rates can worsen inflation. Some Fed officials have already been arguing against a December cut in part because inflation has stubbornly remained above their 2% target. Traders are nevertheless betting on a nearly 79% probability that the Fed will cut rates next month, up from 71% on Friday and from less than a coin flip’s chance a week ago, according to data from CME Group. U. S. markets will be closed on Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday. A day later, it’s on to the rush of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. On Wall Street, U. S.-listed shares of Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk fell 8. 3% Monday after it reported that its Alzheimer’s drug failed to slow progression of the disease in a trial. Bitcoin, meanwhile, continued it sharp swings. It was sitting near $86,000 after bouncing between $82,000 and $94,000 over the last week. It was near $125,000 last month. In stock markets abroad, indexes were mixed across Europe and Asia. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng jumped 2% for one of the world’s biggest moves. It got a boost from a 4. 7% leap for Alibaba, which has reported strong demand for its updated Qwen AI app. Alibaba is due to report earnings on Tuesday. In the bond market, Treasury yields held relatively steady. The yield on the 10-year Treasury eased to 4. 04% from 4. 06% late Friday. AP Business Writers Matt Ott and Elaine Kurtenbach contributed.

Thanksgiving food drives help struggling Bay Area families facing food insecurity: ‘Feed everybody’

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — With only five days until Thanksgiving, food drives are kicking off to help across the Bay Area to help families experiencing food insecurity enjoy a holiday meal. This is all at a time when so many people are struggling financially. Volunteers were cheering on every car, dropping off donations for the annual SF Turkey Drive. Pierre Smit founded the turkey drive in 2012. It’s a community call to action for frozen Turkeys and Thanksgiving food donations, which benefits the SF-Marin Food Bank and its partners. “This is extremely important. We want to make sure we feed everybody. We want to make sure we don’t have hungry people in San Francisco,” Smit said. “This is a very good thing. I want to see it do well and support St. Anthony’s and the food bank, for those who need it most,” said Donna Howe from San Francisco. MORE: Bay Area food banks in ‘crisis mode’ despite government shutdown ending San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and his family stopped by to help collect food donations. “This is all about bringing community together, looking out for each other during this holiday season. We have an affordability crisis in the city and the country. We have to take care of each other. That’s what today is about,” Lurie said. The food bank says it’s a critical time for families facing food insecurity. Demand is higher now than at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’re seeing a 205% spike in people coming to our food locator — that’s people going online, trying to find food,” said Angela Wirch from SF-Marin Food Bank. In the South Bay, a free drive-thru turkey giveaway in Santa Clara is lending a hand to a lot of families in need. “I said, ‘You know, I’m having a hard time, so I’m going to come by and get a turkey for my family,'” said Manuel Rojas. State Senator Aisha Wahab hosted the annual giveaway. She says it gets bigger every year. “We know there’s people who live in poverty and in the shadows,” Wahab said. On Thursday in Santa Cruz, demand overwhelmed supply at a drive-thru Thanksgiving food giveaway. Organizers ran out of food within hours after thousands of people showed up. “One of the things we’ve heard, they’ve either been laid off, struggling. They didn’t want to come and receive a turkey but can’t deny they’re in need this year,” Wahab said.
