Here are some of my favorite third-party apps for iPhone and Mac

I recently shared my top ten list of Apple and non-Apple tech. This time, I’m following up with some of my favorite third-party apps for iPhone and Mac.

In putting this piece together, I realized that I don’t often use apps purely for entertainment. On both iPhone and Mac, the vast majority of my choices perform a useful function.

### iPhone Apps

**CityMapper**
Both Apple Maps and Google Maps have improved over the years at helping navigate cities using public transit. Many cities also have their own transit authority apps. However, when it comes to traveling, you can’t beat the convenience of a single app with a familiar user interface that works across many different cities.

Citymapper supports walking and cycling as well as all the various types of public transit options within a city. It has also proved extremely reliable in my experience, especially when it comes to being aware of delays and closures that might affect your journey.

**Beeline**
My one exception for entertainment is Beeline, which I use for cycling. It leverages crowdsourced ratings for cycling routes to help find preferred paths, and this can make a big difference.

I also love the compass mode for those times when I have a destination but want to allow serendipity to take me there. In this mode, you get a single arrow pointing directly toward your destination, allowing you to wind your way through back streets, always heading roughly in the right direction but without strict turn-by-turn directions.

**Blackmagic Camera**
As the owner of two Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K units, it’s no surprise that the company’s iPhone app is my favorite way to shoot video on the device. Blackmagic Design is a genius at allowing full control over your shooting while keeping the user interface minimalist and logical.

The iPhone app UI closely mirrors the company’s hardware controls. For times when I don’t have time for full manual control and need run-and-gun shooting, I use **Final Cut Camera** as an alternative. It is just as easy to use as the stock camera app but allows you to record directly to an external SSD.

**Libby**
I do include one pure entertainment app: Libby. This app lets you borrow ebooks and audiobooks from your local library. Popular new releases often require joining a waiting list, but it can save you a significant amount of money compared to purchasing books.

For me, one huge advantage is being willing to try books where the purchase price might seem like too much of a gamble. Libby makes exploring new reads easier and more affordable.

**Awesome Habits**
Trying to form new habits—whether exercising more, sticking to a calorie-controlled diet, reading more books, journaling, or just taking a daily walk—can be much easier than sticking to them daily.

The Awesome Habits app is a simple but highly effective way to track how well you maintain your daily goals. Once you’ve entered your habits, the app displays a badge counter showing how many habits you haven’t completed yet each day. This acts as a constant reminder to open the app and check what is left to do.

### Mac Apps

**Aqua Voice**
I’ve only been using Aqua Voice for a couple of months, but it has quickly become my absolute favorite Mac utility. It is an incredibly accurate voice dictation service that has revolutionized how I use my Mac.

(Check out my full piece on Aqua Voice for more information.) For now, suffice it to say that I am dictating this article, as I do most of my work these days.

**PhraseExpress**
When TextExpander moved to a subscription model, I looked for alternatives and found PhraseExpress. This is the app I’ve been using ever since. It lets me maintain a large collection of standard macro texts that I can insert with just a few key presses.

It is worth noting that PhraseExpress is a port of a Windows app, so the user interface looks somewhat dated. But it more than makes up for that in functionality.

**NordVPN**
VPN apps obviously offer protection when using public Wi-Fi hotspots, but they serve some other important purposes for me as well.

As a UK-based writer for a predominantly American site, I often need to ensure I’m viewing the US version of websites. Connecting to a US server via VPN is an easy way to do this.

Additionally, some TV shows and movies are available on US streaming services but not in the UK. Using a VPN generally allows me to watch these programs.

NordVPN is my preferred service for a couple of reasons:
– **Privacy:** NordVPN keeps no logs and undergoes third-party audits to verify this.
– **Reliability:** It has consistently been the most reliable service in staying ahead in the cat-and-mouse game between streaming services and VPNs. On the rare occasions an IP address gets detected by a streaming service, switching servers or trying again the next day usually works.

**Scrivener**
In my view, Scrivener is hands-down the best writing app ever created. It’s been over a decade since I first reviewed it here, but everything I said then still applies today.

Scrivener is fantastic for structuring your writing. It allows easy switching between different sections or viewing more than one section at the same time.

I also love how I can keep all my research, notes, saved webpages, and everything else I might need, all within the same app as my writing.

I’ve used Scrivener to write three novels and am currently using it for a non-fiction book. I wouldn’t dream of writing a book in anything else.

What are some of your favorite third-party iPhone and Mac apps? Please share your recommendations in the comments below!

“He’s fought the best in the world” – Denis Puric believes “it’s possible” for Nong-O to pull off upset against Rodtang

Denis Puric isn’t writing off Nong-O Hama’s chances against Rodtang Jitmuangnon, and he has good reason to believe the veteran can pull off the upset.

The 40-year-old Bosnian-Canadian striker squares off against former three-division K-1 champion Takeru Segawa in a flyweight kickboxing bout at **ONE 173: Superbon vs. Noiri**, taking place inside Tokyo’s Ariake Arena on Sunday, Nov. 16.

On the same card, 38-year-old Nong-O battles Rodtang for the vacant ONE flyweight Muay Thai world title in an all-Thai classic.

During a pre-fight interview with the South China Morning Post (SCMP), “The Bosnian Menace” offered his assessment on the superfight based on Nong-O’s recent performances.

> “Considering his last fight against Kongthoranee, I think it’s possible. The boy’s a beast. Nong-O is a legend, man. He’s been in the game for so long. He’s fought the best in the world,” Denis Puric said.

Puric’s perspective carries weight considering his connections to both fighters. He has trained alongside Nong-O at Superbon Training Camp in Bangkok, Thailand, giving him firsthand knowledge of the 38-year-old veteran’s technical prowess and devastating kicking game.

Meanwhile, he has also shared the Circle with Rodtang, having faced “The Iron Man” in a thrilling three-round battle at ONE 167 in June last year. This experience has helped Puric understand what makes the former flyweight Muay Thai champion so dangerous.

While many view Rodtang as the heavy favorite, Puric’s belief in Nong-O’s chances suggests the underdog shouldn’t be counted out when these two icons collide for the vacant world title gold.

### Denis Puric Stoked to Be Part of Blockbuster ONE 173 in Tokyo

In the same online interview, Denis Puric labeled ONE’s return to Tokyo with ONE 173 in November as the stuff of dreams.

“The Bosnian Menace” has fought on some of the biggest cards and shows throughout his two-decade career. Still, he recognizes this opportunity to be part of this card as something extremely special.

> “I’m super excited [to fight here]. Honestly, this whole card looks crazy. I feel like this is the best card ONE Championship has ever put together. You got basically the best fighters in ONE on this card,” he shared.

### Event Details

**ONE 173: Superbon vs. Noiri**

Jason Momoa Looks Unrecognizable With Bald Hair Transformation

Jason Momoa’s latest transformation takes the Iron Throne—literally. The *Game of Thrones* alum surprised fans by debuting a bald hairstyle for his new Chime holiday campaign, making him almost unrecognizable with the fresh look.

In the “Bank Smarter This Season” ad, Jason plays several characters while narrating the chaos of gift-giving. One of his standout roles is a bed salesman who sports long copper hair on the sides but is bald on top. To fully embody the character, the 46-year-old donned wire-framed glasses and wore a wool gray suit, clutching a clipboard in a mattress store setting.

The commercial doesn’t stop there. Jason also rocks a mullet as a security officer and appears in an all-pink outfit paired with pearl-adorned spectacles to portray a store cashier. For the *Aquaman* star, dressing up as various characters added an extra layer of fun to his collaboration with Chime.

This playful campaign showcases Jason Momoa’s versatility and willingness to embrace bold, unexpected looks—all in the spirit of holiday cheer.

Dodgers make final decision on Clayton Kershaw’s World Series roster status

The Los Angeles Dodgers obviously want to give legendary left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw a proper send-off after a sensational near two-decade run with the franchise. At the same time, they are extremely motivated to win their second straight World Series championship. Many fans are wondering if both goals can be accomplished, or if sentiment might clash with ambition in this specific instance.

Based on the latest news, LA believes No. 22 can help the team stay on top. Longtime manager Dave Roberts revealed that Kershaw will be on the Dodgers’ roster for their best-of-seven, season-ending showdown with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez.

Following a rough relief outing versus the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 3 of the National League Division Series, it was unclear if Kershaw would receive another opportunity to take the mound before he officially retires. The Dodgers kept the 37-year-old on the active squad for the NL Championship Series, but they did not use him in their sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers.

A solid showing against the Blue Jays en route to another title would be the perfect way for Kershaw to end his final October run. But does he still have what it takes?

The 2014 MVP, three-time Cy Young Award winner, and five-time ERA king posted a respectable 2025 regular season, recording a 3.36 ERA with 84 strikeouts and a .663 OPS against in 112 2/3 innings of work. He remains a pillar of consistency for large stretches of time.

However, the playoffs have often been a source of adversity for him. Clayton Kershaw owns a 4.63 ERA in almost 200 postseason innings. That statistic will be the unfortunate “but” people mention when reflecting on an otherwise absurdly amazing MLB career.

It would be quite poetic if the future Hall of Famer and all-time great southpaw could ride off into the sunset after thriving in the Fall Classic. Fans across Los Angeles are undoubtedly hoping to witness just that as Kershaw looks to add one final championship to his illustrious resume.

50 Cent goes at Kayla Nicole, says he’d attend Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce’s wedding

50 Cent has never been one to stay quiet, and his latest comments prove it. The rap icon recently spoke with ExtraTV about Taylor Swift mentioning him on her new album, *The Life of a Showgirl*, and made it clear he approves of her relationship with Travis Kelce, according to PEOPLE.

“I would make my way over there,” 50 Cent said with a grin when asked if he would attend Swift and Kelce’s wedding. “I like the team, you know, I like the whole thing.”

Swift’s track “Ruin the Friendship,” which dropped on October 3, features a line referencing a “50 Cent song” playing in the background of a moment she wished had gone differently. She sings, “Should’ve kissed you anyway, would’ve been the best mistake.”

When the album launched, 50 Cent celebrated the shoutout on Instagram, writing, “THIS IS FOR BIG TIMERS ONLY!” alongside the *Showgirl* album art.

### 50 Cent Praises Swift and Kelce, Shades Kayla Nicole

In his interview with Extra’s Mona Kosar Abdi, the *Get Rich or Die Tryin’* star explained that the lyric meant more than just a casual mention.

“It really is cool because when she makes the reference, if you listen to the song, it’s to what was going on in culture at that time,” he said. “The music, you couldn’t miss it. No one was more prominent in music at that point.”

50 Cent then gave Swift and Kelce his approval, stating, “I like it a lot better than the last thing he had going on. It’s a lot better.”

Though 50 never mentioned her name directly, fans quickly caught that the “last thing” referred to Kayla Nicole, Kelce’s ex-girlfriend of five years. Nicole and Kelce dated from 2017 to 2022, and her name has resurfaced frequently since Swift and Kelce began dating.

Despite the lingering attention, 50 made it clear he is a fan of the new couple.

### Would 50 Cent Collaborate with Taylor Swift?

When asked if he would ever collaborate with Swift, 50 Cent said the decision would depend on her.

“You’d have to ask her,” he explained. “If she had a song that made sense for my voice, I’d be open.”

It looks like even 50 Cent—known for his fearless takes and clever wordplay—is cheering on one of pop culture’s biggest love stories.

KISS co-founders Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and Peter Criss attend Ace Frehley’s private funeral

Ace Frehley Laid to Rest in Private New York Ceremony

Ace Frehley, the co-founder and original guitarist of the legendary rock band KISS, has been laid to rest. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was buried in his hometown of New York City on Wednesday, during a solemn ceremony attended by close friends, family, and his former bandmates Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss.

SiriusXM host Eddie Trunk shared the news on Instagram following the service, writing, “Ace Frehley has now been laid to rest in Bronx, NY. It has been an emotional couple of days to say the least, saying farewell to a rock icon and long-time friend.” He added that the intimate gatherings went as well as could be expected and were attended by a small group of family and close friends, including the three surviving original members of KISS.

In a video shared on social media, Trunk further reflected on the private memorial and funeral. “Of course, where he grew up, very close to where his parents were buried, which were his wishes,” he explained regarding Frehley’s decision to be buried in the Bronx. “It was not a big event by any means. Nothing with fans or anything like that, just a very small private service for Ace. And it was attended by the three surviving members of KISS – Gene, Paul, and Peter.”

Trunk, who has been a longtime friend of Frehley’s, described the gathering as “wonderful to celebrate Ace and remember him and give him a good sendoff.” He also revealed plans to organize a fan tribute concert to honor the guitar legend, saying, “I think he’d love that and I think he deserves that.”

Ace Frehley passed away on October 16 in Morristown, New Jersey, at the age of 74. Although the cause of death has not been officially disclosed, his representative Lori Lousararian attributed it to a “recent fall at his home.”

In a heartfelt statement, Frehley’s loved ones expressed their sorrow: “We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth. We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension.”

Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley also paid tribute to their late bandmate in an emotional joint message: “We are devastated by the passing of Ace Frehley. He was an essential and irreplaceable rock soldier during some of the most formative foundational chapters of the band and its history. He is and will always be a part of KISS’s legacy. Our thoughts are with Jeanette, Monique, and all those who loved him, including our fans around the world.”

Prior to his passing, it was reported that Frehley had been placed on life support with a brain bleed following a fall he suffered weeks earlier in his studio. The “New York Groove” artist had referenced the incident last month when he canceled a performance in California due to “a minor fall in his studio” that required a hospital visit. Subsequently, he canceled the remaining dates of his 2025 tour, citing “ongoing medical issues” stemming from the fall.

Known by the nicknames “Spaceman” and “Space Ace,” Frehley co-founded KISS in 1973 alongside Simmons, Stanley, and Criss. Although he left the band in 1982 to pursue a successful solo career, he reunited with KISS for a 1996 tour and remained with them until 2002.

In August, KISS made headlines when they were announced as 2025 Kennedy Center honorees. Reflecting on the honor at the time, Frehley told TMZ, “A dream come true that I never thought would materialize.”

Following Frehley’s death, Simmons lamented that his friend would not be able to attend the awards ceremony. “Our hearts are broken. Ace has passed on,” he wrote on X last week. “No one can touch Ace’s legacy. I know he loved the fans. He told me many times. Sadder still, Ace didn’t live long enough to be honored at the Kennedy Center Honors event in Dec. Ace was the eternal rock soldier. Long may his legacy live on!”

Ace Frehley’s contributions to rock music and KISS’s enduring legacy will be remembered by fans and fellow musicians alike for generations to come.
