Middle school principal in Maine draws criticism after dressing as ICE agent for Halloween

A middle school principal in Maine is facing criticism after dressing as a federal immigration officer for Halloween. The costume included a bulletproof vest labeled “ICE.”

An image circulating widely online shows James Black, principal of Mt. Blue Middle School in Farmington, wearing the ICE outfit. The photo features Black in a bulletproof vest marked “Police ICE,” a cap with “ICE” written on it, and a gaiter patterned with blue stars and red stripes covering most of his face.

Christian Elkington, superintendent of the Mt. Blue Regional School Unit #9, confirmed the district is aware of the incident. “I have received several communications from staff members and others with concerns and/or questions about the matter,” Elkington told Boston.com Sunday night.

He added, “As we understand it, this situation occurred off RSU #9 grounds and was not connected to any RSU 9 activities. The district is responding to this situation in a manner consistent with our internal practices and procedures. We are also complying with our legal obligation to maintain the confidentiality of our employees.”

The tattoos visible on the man in the photo match those seen on Black’s Facebook profile. However, the profile appeared to have been taken down shortly after Boston.com viewed the images.

Project Relief Maine, an advocacy and mutual aid organization, shared the photo of the controversial costume on social media. They stated, “For immigrant students who already live in fear of ICE, this isn’t funny. It’s terrifying. Deportation isn’t a costume. It’s not a joke. It’s trauma.”

The group emphasized, “Students deserve to feel safe at school, not mocked by the very people who are supposed to protect them.”

Attempts to reach Black for comment on Sunday evening were unsuccessful.

DAN GAINOR: The 5 craziest stories of October — from Karine Jean-Pierre to PETA plaques

We have passed the spooky season of silly “No Kings” protests and whines about White House renovations. Halloween marks the start of one of our favorite times of year: eating. The three biggest food holidays all land within two months.

Halloween came right after an event commemorating the recently departed revolutionary Assata Shakur, the former member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army who escaped a New Jersey prison to Cuba 46 years ago. In other words, another cop killer.

According to the New York Times’ loving farewell to Shakur, she murdered “state trooper Werner Foerster, who was killed, and another, James Harper, who was wounded.” Notice a trend? You should. Shakur died in September, or I’d dwell more on the media’s love fest for her. Watching Zirin lament the poor health of “the country’s best-known political prisoner” was bad enough. For the record, I lament his health, too, just not in the same way.

### Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

If you travel the back roads of the United States, you will encounter oddities: large monuments to furniture, trolls, a giant elephant, and even Carhenge (just what you think it is; Stonehenge is better). Count wacky museums in that list.

But we are losing one—Leila’s Hair Museum in Missouri. Alas, Leila Cohoon died at 92, and now they are “rehoming the collection of more than 3,000 pieces to museums across the country,” according to the Associated Press.

The AP describes the hair art coming from “past presidents, Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe, and even Jesus” (that last one, I kind of doubt). Hair art used to be how people remembered loved ones or captured keepsakes of famous people. The museum also drew the attention of celebrities from comedian Phyllis Diller to Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne.

It’s good to see other museums taking on these unusual memories, but that’s one less cool roadside stop.

### When You’ve Lost the Washington Post

Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre made the news in October—and not in a good way. She should be used to that after an inauspicious term in her role, covering for President Joe Biden’s obvious dementia.

“KJP,” as she is sometimes called, has a new book out, *Moving Forward: A Story of Hope, Hard Work, and the Promise of America*. In World Series terms, she whiffed on all three. Don’t wait to buy your copy.

Even the Washington Post had unkind words for it. Book critic Becca Rothfeld wrote a lead 190 words long with six semicolons and two em dashes. She complained that KJP had only given up on the Democratic Party because it helped “usher a doddering Joe Biden out of the 2024 presidential race.”

Now That’s Some Hissing Humor: 27 Cat Memes to Boost Your Spirits Until Halloween

Hello, fellow feline fans! It’s the day before Halloween, that magical time when the air smells faintly of pumpkin spice, half the neighborhood is covered in fake cobwebs, and our cats are one spooky shadow away from accidentally scaring us to death.

The almost-Halloween mood is bubbling with excitement. The costumes are ready (or maybe the cats have already shredded them), and we’re just counting down the hours until spooky o’clock finally arrives.

But how do we pass the time until then? With cat memes, of course! Because let’s be honest—cats and Halloween are kindred spirits. They’re mysterious, dramatic, slightly chaotic, and occasionally seen sprinting across the room at invisible forces.

You don’t need ghosts when your cat already stares at walls like they’re haunted.

DC leaf collection for the fall season begins after Halloween

Once you hand out candy to neighborhood trick-or-treaters, you may feel the need to buckle down and rake up all the dead leaves on your lawn. This year’s leaf collection in D.C. begins on Monday, Nov. 3, which happens to fall right after Halloween weekend.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced in a news conference that each residential neighborhood will receive at least two leaf collections during the season.

“There are many ways that DPW and residents work together to keep our city clean and safe, and leaf collection is one of them,” Bowser said, referring to D.C.’s Department of Public Works.

The leaf collection season will run through February. Mayor Bowser advised residents to rake their leaves into tree boxes or curbs in front of their homes. Leaves can also be placed in paper bags, but crews will not collect leaves in plastic bags.

“We encourage everyone to look up your collection zone, pay attention to when DPW announces that they’re 10 days out, and then work together with your neighbors to have leaves in tree boxes or curbside for collection,” she added.

In about a week, residents who receive trash and recycling services from DPW will receive a leaf collection brochure outlining when they can expect their first collection this season.

“Leaf collection is one of our toughest operations because we’re working with two unpredictable forces: Mother Nature and human nature,” said DPW Interim Director Anthony Crispino.

Residents can find out which leaf collection section they live in by visiting the District’s leaf collection page.
