How a Portrait of a Brazilian Woman Fueled an Indian Election Scandal

A Brazilian photographer and a woman he photographed in 2017 have found themselves unexpectedly entangled in an election fraud controversy in India — a situation that appears to trace back to a stock photo website.

As reported by Hindustan Times, Rahul Gandhi, an opposition politician from India’s Haryana state, made explosive allegations this week concerning election fraud in last year’s polls. Curiously, 22 of the supposedly fraudulent votes were linked to an image taken in 2017 of a Brazilian woman, Larissa Nery.

Matheus Ferrero, the photographer who captured Nery’s portrait in 2017, has been overwhelmed by the sudden attention from India. According to NDTV, Ferrero has even deleted his online presence due to the unexpected spotlight.

Ferrero originally took the photos of Nery for practice. With her permission, he uploaded the images to various free stock photo sites, including Unsplash. Following the controversy, Ferrero has removed the portrait from Unsplash.

During a live-streamed press conference, Rahul Gandhi displayed Nery’s portrait and questioned how it was possible for this woman to have cast 22 votes in the Indian elections. At that time, Nery’s identity was unknown.

There is no evidence that Nery herself, now a professional hairdresser in Brazil, traveled to India or illegally voted in the elections. Both Nery and Ferrero have expressed confusion about how they became involved in the allegations.

Ferrero told Aos Fatos, “They literally raided all my accounts. It was a lot of weird people talking about a lot of things.”

Gandhi claims that Nery’s portrait was used in voter records across 10 different electoral sections, suggesting what he calls a “centralized operation” of electoral fraud. He said, “Someone inserted this woman in the electoral list on a central level, not at the local level of the section,” while showing photos of Nery onscreen.

According to Gandhi, his party — which opposes Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi — has identified around 2.5 million votes that show signs of fraud.

In response to the claims, Nery said to NDTV, “They’re using an old picture of mine. It’s a really old photo. I was so young in it, like 18 or 20 years old. They’re using my photo for… I don’t know, some kind of election or voting thing in India. And they’re making me look Indian to scam people or hit each other with it. Look how crazy this is! What a mess I’m in!”

Amit Malviya, head of Modi’s information technology and social media unit, dismissed the accusations on X (formerly Twitter). He commented, “Now he claims that a Brazilian model voted 22 times in the Indian elections! From ‘vote theft’ to ‘vote carnival,’ Rahul Gandhi turned electoral mathematics into stand-up comedy.”

Importantly, there is no evidence that Brazilian photographer Matheus Ferrero or his 2017 portrait subject, Larissa Nery, had any involvement in the alleged election fraud in India. Nevertheless, they have become caught up in a chaotic and bizarre controversy far from home.

This is certainly not the kind of outcome one would expect when publishing portraits on a stock photo site like Unsplash.

The ‘hard, slow work’ of reducing overdose deaths is having an effect

By Tim Henderson, Stateline.org

Illicit drug overdoses and the deaths they cause are trending down this year, despite spikes in a handful of states, according to a Stateline analysis of data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A handful of places with rising overdoses are responding to the problem with cooperation, they say, by sharing information about overdose surges and distributing emergency medication.

“The national conversation is just about warships in the Caribbean and drones and borders,” said Nabarun Dasgupta, who studies overdose trends at the University of North Carolina. “It discounts this huge groundswell of Americans taking care of Americans. There’s a huge amount of caregiving and tending to the needs of local communities that is being done in a non-flashy way because this is hard, slow work.”

Overdose deaths have been dropping steadily since 2023. As of April, the latest date available, deaths were at 76,500 for the previous 12 months — their lowest level since March 2020. A pandemic spike in overdose deaths drove the number as high as almost 113,000 in the summer of 2023, according to federal statistics.

President Donald Trump has ordered more than a dozen military strikes against boats in the open waters of the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean since September 2, claiming without publicized evidence that their occupants were drug runners bringing narcotics to the United States. Nearly 60 people have been killed.

The bulk of deadly fentanyl is smuggled over the border with Mexico in passenger cars, according to a September report by the federal Government Accountability Office.

A more timely indicator of overdoses — nonfatal suspected overdose patients in hospital emergency departments — was down 7% this year through August compared with 2024, according to Stateline’s analysis of CDC statistics.

The nonfatal overdoses were up for the year in only a few states and the District of Columbia. The largest spikes were 17% in D.C., 16% in Rhode Island, 15% in Delaware, 11% in Connecticut, and 10% in New Mexico, with smaller increases in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, South Dakota, Utah, New Jersey, and Minnesota.

Other states saw drops in nonfatal overdoses: Maryland had the largest decrease through August, about 17%. However, Baltimore had an attention-grabbing cluster of 42 overdoses between July and October, all within the same neighborhood. No fatalities were reported.

The cluster led the city to set aside $2 million in October for more mobile services, harm reduction, and social supports to fight overdoses.

New Mexico is seeing more overdoses and more deaths than the previous year in three counties on the Colorado border. In response, New Mexico is distributing both warnings and naloxone, an opioid-overdose antidote. Officials are giving naloxone to storekeepers near overdose sites and alerting those seeking services about the deadly threat in the local supply.

“We started planning naloxone saturation and different types of outreaches so we can hopefully stem this from getting even worse,” said David Daniels, harm reduction section manager in the New Mexico health department. “Putting messaging directly into clients’ hands is extremely valuable. That might be, ‘If you’re choosing to use, don’t use the regular amount. Maybe you should use a quarter of it. Test it out first,’” Daniels said.

The three counties in New Mexico — which include the capital city Santa Fe, ski resort Taos, and Española, the setting of the 2023 TV black comedy series “The Curse” — saw about 438 more deaths from July through September than they did during the third quarter of 2024, according to Stateline calculations. That’s more than double the 383 overdose deaths for the area during the same time period last year.

Roger Montoya, a former Democratic state representative who runs an arts nonprofit in Rio Arriba County, said most of the deaths there have been among homeless substance users. A local hospital has responded with programs to get treatment for more people, and his own Moving Arts Española group concentrates on helping children and young people break a cycle of economic despair that often leads to addiction and homelessness, he said.

“We try to redirect and strengthen the resiliency of young people who largely are being raised by grandparents and kin because mom and dad are either dead, on the street, or incarcerated,” Montoya said.

Most states with overdose increases are still showing fewer deaths, mostly because the drug supply in the eastern United States is more likely to be cut with sedatives that don’t have the same deadly effect as fentanyl, though they can cause overdose.

The drugs linked to Baltimore’s mass overdoses were cut with an unusual, powerful sedative, according to federal testing. The sedative can cause people to lose consciousness but can’t itself be treated with reversal medication such as naloxone.

By contrast, New Mexico’s tests on this year’s clusters generally found more deadly fentanyl than usual in the local supply, said Phillip Fiuty, a technical adviser on adulterant testing in the state health department.

“We’re not seeing the type of adulteration they’re experiencing on the East Coast. Once something is in New Mexico, there’s little to no adulteration,” Fiuty said.

Some East Coast states are seeing more overdoses but fewer deaths. Rhode Island warned of spikes in nonfatal overdose in August and September, but deaths through September were still lower than during the same period last year, according to state figures.

That’s not always the case. Connecticut reported a surge of both fatal and nonfatal overdoses near interstate highways in May and June.

“One of the factors is change in the illicit drug supply or bad batches. I think that’s what’s playing out now. The drug supply is increasingly unpredictable,” said Lori Tremmel Freeman, CEO of the National Association of County and City Health Officials.

The association has a suggested framework for community response to spikes, but cities and counties may be hampered by a new aggressiveness on enforcement and more hostility to local efforts to stop deaths, she said.

The current Trump administration has shown some reluctance to support community harm reduction techniques, she said. That includes the temporary suspension of $140 million in funds for a program called Overdose Data to Action, known as OD2A, that the first Trump administration started to sound the alarm when spikes happen.

“Given recent cuts to health care and substance use and overdose prevention services that we’re seeing, that is impacting some of the work on the ground,” Freeman said. “It’s pushing people away from being able to make the changes they need to make to change their lives. It has the potential to create more of an overdose problem.”

Ryan Clark Predicts Conference-Altering SEC Upset in Week 11

Two teams sit atop the SEC standings through the first 10 weeks of the 2025 college football season: the 5-0 Texas A&M Aggies and the 5-0 Alabama Crimson Tide.

On Saturday, the No. 4 Crimson Tide will welcome the unranked LSU Tigers for a primetime contest under the lights at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama enters the game as a 9.5-point favorite over the visiting Tigers, who recently fired now-former head coach Brian Kelly after losing three of their last four games.

While LSU faces a tough task ahead in Tuscaloosa, there are some who believe the Tigers are trending in the right direction under interim head coach Frank Wilson.

In fact, ESPN analyst Ryan Clark believes his alma mater will mount a stunning road-game upset over Alabama on Saturday night.

“LSU is about to go into Alabama and win the game,” Clark said on ESPN’s *Get Up*. “Frank Wilson’s got it going different around there. What did he do, what’s the first thing he do? He called all the old players. Tells everybody to come back. He’s got Jacob Hester, the original No. 18, giving speeches to the team. New athletic director Verge Ausberry, who played on that very field, giving speeches to the team.

“We’re going into Alabama, fresh off of the bye week. You know what we was doing? Getting back to the basics. We was getting back to the basics. You know what else? The head coach, he ain’t got to fake an accent no more. He from New Orleans now.”

If LSU does pull off the upset, it could signal a shift of power atop the SEC, a conference dominated by Alabama, Georgia, and LSU since 2014.

Alabama has won each of its last seven games after starting the year with a season-opening loss to the Florida State Seminoles. The Crimson Tide have claimed victory in all five of their conference matchups, defeating Georgia, Vanderbilt, Missouri, Tennessee, and South Carolina in consecutive games.

Saturday night’s LSU-Alabama matchup will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Fans can expect an exciting primetime showdown as both teams vie for SEC supremacy.

Colts dealt disappointing DeForest Buckner injury update

The Indianapolis Colts had a strong trade deadline, adding a key piece to their defense. However, the team faced a setback on Friday, as star pass rusher DeForest Buckner will be sidelined for an extended period due to a neck injury.

According to NFL insider Ari Meirov, “The Colts are placing DT DeForest Buckner on IR with a neck injury. Very significant loss. He’s out at least four games.” The Colts officially confirmed the injury shortly afterward.

This is a major blow to the Colts’ defense, which currently ranks in the top 10 in sack percentage, according to Team Rankings. Head coach Shane Steichen revealed that Buckner sustained the neck injury during the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This marks the second significant injury in Buckner’s career; he previously missed five weeks last season due to an ankle injury. Over the course of his career, Buckner has missed a total of six games.

As the Colts prepare to travel to Germany for a matchup with the Atlanta Falcons, they will be without their best pass rusher. Buckner leads all Colts pass rushers with four sacks and has tallied 26 solo tackles so far this season.

Adding to the team’s defensive concerns, Tyquan Lewis, who ranks second on the team with three sacks, is currently dealing with a groin injury. This situation will likely require Kwity Paye, also with three sacks, to step up in Buckner’s absence.

With a 7-2 record, the Colts are entering a critical stretch as they aim to secure a playoff berth by winning the AFC South. Following their game in Germany against the Falcons, the team faces a challenging schedule:

– After their bye week, they travel to Arrowhead Stadium to face the Kansas City Chiefs.
– Next, they will host the Houston Texans.
– Finally, they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road in Northern Florida.

By placing Buckner on injured reserve, his earliest eligible return is Week 15 against the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field. If he is unable to return then, his next opportunity will be the following week on Monday Night Football against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Colts will need to hold the fort defensively until Buckner’s return as they navigate this difficult gauntlet in pursuit of a playoff spot.

Adjusters inspect remnants of Heat coach Erik Spoelstra’s Coral Gables-area home destroyed in fire amid probe

**Miami Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra’s Coral Gables Home Destroyed in Massive Fire**

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) — Insurance adjusters were seen inspecting the charred remains of Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra’s multimillion-dollar home near Coral Gables, just a day after it was destroyed in a devastating fire.

7News cameras captured the adjusters heading inside the property on Friday morning. The home is located near Southwest 49th Avenue and 80th Street in the Ponce-Davis neighborhood. Outside the residence, a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser was parked as officials conducted their assessment.

The five-bedroom, six-bathroom residence burst into flames early Thursday morning. Radio transmissions from first responders captured a firefighter reporting, “A single family home. We’ve got fire in the back.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Victoria Byrd addressed reporters after daybreak, describing the severity of the blaze. “We found fire that was as tall as the trees,” she said.

7News cameras also captured Coach Spoelstra watching helplessly as his home was consumed by flames. At the time, Spoelstra was flying back to South Florida with the team after their game against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night.

Dozens of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue firefighters battled the blaze for hours. Battalion Chief Byrd highlighted the challenges they faced. “Due to the privacy wall and a lot of the tree cover, it was very difficult to access, with only one point of entry,” she explained.

Thanks to the crews’ efforts, the fire was contained and did not spread to nearby homes along Southwest 80th Street. “We used multiple aerial apparatuses, fire engines, and rescues to help combat this incident,” Byrd added.

7Skyforce aerial footage captured the aftermath, showing flames that had gutted most of the structure.

Spoelstra purchased the one-acre property in 2023 for $6.6 million. Neighbors told 7News that he had since renovated the house, which spans more than 5,700 square feet and includes amenities such as a pool, outdoor kitchen, and tennis courts.

Just two weeks ago, Spoelstra had invited his team over for a barbecue. The Miami Heat posted a video showing players using the grill and playing soccer on the property.

Now, the home has been reduced to soot and ash and has officially been declared a total loss.

Despite this personal tragedy, Spoelstra is expected to coach as the Heat host the Charlotte Hornets at the Kaseya Center Friday night.

‘Unwell’ Trump openly flaunts plan to ‘rig the 2026 midterms’ after losses

“Daily Blast” podcast host Greg Sargent says President Donald Trump is “unraveling” following Tuesday’s election losses, with the former president blaming his own party for losing seats.

“President Trump’s excuses for his party’s losses are getting stranger,” Sargent noted, referencing Trump’s statement: “I tell Republicans, you want to win elections, you got to talk about these facts,” which he claims include his own accomplishments since returning to office.

Trump even asserted, “It’s really easy to win elections when you talk about the facts.”

“That strikes me as pretty deep denial,” Sargent told guest Jessica Post, a Democratic strategist. “It seems to me that, in just about every conceivable way, these elections were a repudiation of his record — particularly on the economy.”

Now, appearing desperate and flailing, Sargent and Post say Trump is “openly” responding to his losses by pushing “pernicious gerrymandering schemes” aimed at rigging the 2026 midterms.

“He actually came out and said it in another quote right after Election Day this week,” Sargent explained. “He said this of Democrats: ‘Now, if we do what I’m saying, they’ll most likely never obtain power.’”

“So there you have it — end the filibuster, pass all these voting restrictions, and we will lock in Republican power forever,” Sargent continued. “You’re not supposed to admit openly that you want to do these voting restrictions in order to rig the elections in your favor and create one-party rule — you’re supposed to say you want to do it in order to eliminate fraud, which is all b——, but that’s what they say. And at least most Republicans know that they’re supposed to say that. But Trump says straight out, let’s do all this stuff in order to lock in power for ourselves. It’s just amazing.”

“He’s definitely not hiding the ball there,” agreed Post. “Republicans received printed talking points saying, ‘We’re going to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat,’ after they decided they wanted to change all the voting laws leading up to the last 2024 election. And obviously, Trump — if he got that handout — he just decided to ignore it.”

Post also highlighted that Trump’s gerrymandering scheme could result in “nine to twelve [Republican] House seats — and maybe even more … if Trump’s able to convince more states to act.” However, she pointed out that many are not considering Virginia in these calculations, which could add “a number of Dem seats.”

“So there’s really a range of possibilities here,” Post said, “going all the way from Republicans having five extra seats at the end of the day and being able to hold onto the House … or all this backfiring and Republicans actually losing a couple more seats and losing the House as a result.”

Despite these concerns, Post expressed optimism about the future for Democrats, citing the positive results on Tuesday.

Lorient vs Toulouse Prediction and Betting Tips | November 9 2025

Lorient face off against Toulouse in a Ligue 1 match at the Stade du Moustoir this Sunday. Currently, Lorient sit in 16th place in the table, while Toulouse have climbed up to 9th place in recent weeks. So, which of these sides will come out on top this weekend?

### Lorient vs Toulouse Head-to-Head and Key Numbers

Lorient’s home record against Toulouse leaves a lot to be desired. They have not beaten Toulouse at the Stade du Moustoir in their last six meetings and have been defeated in their last two home clashes.

Lorient were well beaten by Lens last weekend, extending their current winless run to five matches. Their last victory came on September 27, when they pulled off an impressive 3-1 upset against Monaco.

On the other hand, Toulouse are also without a win in their last three games. However, they have only suffered one defeat during this run and had a decent spell prior to that, having lost just once in their last six matches. Their most recent game ended in a goalless draw with Le Havre.

While Lorient have only won two games all season—which explains their low league standing—one area where they have been relatively strong is at home. They have suffered just one defeat at the Stade du Moustoir this season, a heavy 1-7 loss to Lille back in August.

In terms of goalkeeping, Toulouse boast one of the best performers in Ligue 1. Their highly-rated keeper, Guillaume Restes, has kept four clean sheets so far this season. Only PSG’s Lucas Chevalier has managed more shutouts.

### Lorient vs Toulouse Prediction

Neither side is coming into this game in great form. Lorient have not won since September, while Toulouse have also been winless in their last three outings.

Overall, Lorient’s season has been relatively poor, but they have proven tough to break down at home, with Lille being the only team to defeat them there. Given Toulouse’s recent struggles to find the back of the net, this match could well be a low-scoring affair.

Taking into account Lorient’s strong home performances and Toulouse’s less-than-lethal attack, the most likely outcome is a draw.

**Prediction: Lorient 1-1 Toulouse**

### Lorient vs Toulouse Betting Tips

– **Tip 1:** Result – Draw
– **Tip 2:** Game to feature fewer than 2.5 goals – Yes
*(Four of the last six games between Lorient and Toulouse have featured fewer than 2.5 goals.)*
– **Tip 3:** Aron Donnum to score or assist for Toulouse – Yes
*(Donnum has scored three goals and registered two assists in his last six matches for Toulouse.)*

Stay tuned for what promises to be an interesting battle at the Stade du Moustoir this Sunday!
