Lucknow: Farmers Protest On Bullock Carts Against LDA Over Land, Compensation Issues

**Farmers Stage Massive Protest in Lucknow Over Unfulfilled Compensation and Rehabilitation Promises**

*Lucknow:* Farmers under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rashtrawadi) staged a massive protest in Lucknow on Tuesday. Arriving on bullock carts and carrying sticks, they marched from Kaiserbagh to the District Magistrate’s office to voice their grievances.

The protesters accused the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) of seizing a cremation ground and failing to deliver the compensation and rehabilitation benefits promised during land acquisition. The farmers explained that their land in Ujariyaon, acquired under the Gomti Nagar scheme in 1984, was compensated at a rate of just 84 paise per square foot. This amount was later revised by the court to ₹4.60 per square foot.

Despite a 2016 court order directing full payments, the farmers allege that the LDA has not disbursed the complete compensation, citing a lack of funds. Ashok Yadav, president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rashtrawadi), highlighted that along with monetary compensation, promises were made for jobs, housing, farmer centers, and village development — none of which have been fulfilled.

“Women of farmer families are now forced to work as domestic help to survive,” Yadav stated, underlining the dire situation faced by the community.

The protesters further alleged that of the three cremation sites originally available, only one remains, with the other two taken over by the LDA. Participating women activists emphasized, “We have written proof of the promises made, but no authority listens to us.” They added that years of appeals to both the LDA and district officials have gone unanswered.

Declaring that the farmers are caught in a struggle between the state government and the LDA, the protest leaders warned of an indefinite agitation if their 13-point demand charter is not addressed promptly.

The Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rashtrawadi) continues to urge authorities to fulfill their commitments and provide justice to the affected farmers.

Dem Lawmaker Rains Down Fire On Trump

BROWN: So, we wanna talk about abuse of power, huh? Well, let me start here. President Trump’s only expertise on crime is committing it, not preventing it; enabling it, not ending it; and covering it up, not cleaning it up. He is a convicted felon. He has illegally frozen federal funding. He has assaulted the rule of law at every turn. He has consistently violated constitutionally protected due process rights, and he has unleashed a corporate agenda to enrich himself and his wealthy donors.

Right now, as we sit here, Trump is bending over backwards to protect Ghislaine Maxwell, a convicted sex trafficker who preyed on children, and blocking the release of the Epstein files to shield criminals from accountability. In the last 10 months alone, he has pardoned countless white-collar fraudsters who ripped off the American people—often conveniently after they cozied up to him.

And let’s not forget, Trump pardoned every single person charged or convicted in the January insurrection. That included 172 people who pleaded guilty to assaulting law enforcement. It included dozens of repeat offenders, people with prior convictions for rape, manslaughter, and sexual abuse of a minor. It also included at least 10 individuals who have already been re-arrested for new crimes.

So, spare us. Spare us the talk of law and order because under Trump, that only means lawlessness for his friends and punishment for everyone else.

Now let me be clear: I care deeply about public safety in my district and in every district across America. Every person deserves to feel safe in their neighborhood, at their job, and at their school. And if I may, there is some good news. Violent crime has been consistently decreasing across America. Yes, we have more work to do, but we also know what works to keep it that way.

So, if you are really serious about public safety, let’s increase funding for violence prevention programs. Let’s pass common sense gun safety bills. And let’s provide additional federal resources to our local partners to recruit and train local law enforcement.

But what has this administration done instead? Rolled back gun safety reforms, gutted DOJ programs tasked with addressing violent crime, and blocked funding to local law enforcement and community violence prevention agencies like the one you served, Mr. Jackson.

Earlier this year, Cleveland Peacemakers Alliance—a local violence prevention organization—had its community violence prevention grant funding frozen by this administration. Mr. Jackson, I know you cannot speak to this specific grant, but can you talk about the importance of grants funded through the bipartisan Safer Communities Act and how freezes like this impact public safety?

JACKSON: Well, we know—from Cleveland Peacemakers to Advanced Peace to Safe Streets Baltimore to Life Camp in New York City—that these organizations that are doing violence intervention work are saving lives every day. Every study we’ve seen that focuses on how impactful community violence intervention has been has shown promise.

But this Trump administration hasn’t stopped at terminating violence intervention programs. They also terminated $1 billion in youth mental health resources that we know can help our youth who are in crisis—before a school shooting, before a suicide attempt, before any violent harm.

They’ve also made major cuts to the ATF. We know the ATF now has lost two-thirds of its inspectors, so they don’t even have the capacity to inspect gun stores to determine whether or not they’re violating the law. The administration also reversed the zero tolerance policy for gun dealers, where if they violate the law, they lose their license.

Even the Department of Justice website invites previously violating gun stores to come back and get their licenses again.

So, he’s not only defunding programs that we know are preventing violence—programs that are working with youth, working in schools, and working in homes—he’s also stripped, dismantled, and defunded federal law enforcement efforts to keep guns out of our communities.

BROWN: Thank you so much. Instead of funding proven public safety solutions, my Republican colleagues want to pull political stunts like weaponizing the National Guard against the American people.

Let’s be clear: that only sidelines local law enforcement, sows chaos, and distracts from real emergencies. So yes, it’s political theater, but worse—it’s dangerous political theater that puts communities more at risk, not less.

‘India Losing 3% Of GDP Annually Due To Road Accidents,’ Says Union Minister Nitin Gadkari

New Delhi: India is losing 3 per cent of its GDP due to around 5 lakh road accidents annually in the country, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday.

The Minister for Road, Transport and Highways made the remarks while addressing AMCHAM’s event on “Technology Interventions For Road Safety: US-India Partnership” in the national capital.

Highlighting the severity of the issue, Gadkari said the most important problem for the country is road accidents. He noted that every year, India witnesses approximately 4,80,000 accidents, resulting in 1,88,000 deaths, predominantly among people aged between 18 and 45 years.

The minister also raised concerns over the loss of young lives, pointing out that around 10,000 deaths annually are of children below 18 years of age.

He emphasized, “It is one of the major public health issues, and the most important thing is that we are losing 3 per cent of GDP because of road accidents.”

Gadkari further cited poor Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) as one of the key reasons contributing to these accidents. He stated, “DPR consultants are the main culprits responsible for the road accidents. Sometimes, due to cost-saving measures, other reasons, and a non-serious approach, these reports are inadequately prepared.”

To encourage public assistance for accident victims, the government has decided to provide an award of Rs 25,000 to any third person who helps a victim of an accident.

Additionally, Gadkari mentioned, “If any patient, by accident or after an accident, is admitted to any hospital, we can provide Rs 1,50,000 maximum or cover up to 7 years of expenditure for their treatment by the doctor.”

These measures aim to improve road safety and support accident victims across the country.

Delhi HC Quashes NHAI Notification On Recruiting Lawyers Based On CLAT-PG Scores

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday set aside a notification issued by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) that made scores of the Common Law Admission Test for Post-Graduate courses (CLAT-PG) the basis for the recruitment of lawyers.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela allowed a petition challenging the NHAI’s August 11 notification. “The writ petition is allowed. Resultantly, the recruitment criteria given in the notification is quashed,” the bench stated while pronouncing its judgment. The detailed judgment is awaited.

The court’s verdict followed a plea contesting the NHAI notification which mandated the use of CLAT-PG scores for legal recruitment. On September 18, the court had stayed the notification, observing that there appeared to be “no rationale” behind the recruitment process based on CLAT-PG scores.

The petition was filed by Shannu Bahgel, a lawyer, who argued that CLAT-PG scores cannot legally form the basis for public employment. Bahgel contended that the CLAT-PG exam is designed solely to assess the merit of LLB degree holders seeking admission to master’s degree programs in law, not for selection in government jobs.

He further submitted that the purpose of recruitment under the August 11 notification was to engage legal professionals to provide services, not for candidates to pursue higher studies. “There does not appear to be any reasonable or rational nexus between the objects sought to be achieved and the basis of preparation of merit for such selection,” the petition stated.

The bench had earlier observed that the rationale behind the CLAT-PG exam was to measure merit for higher education and not for public employment purposes.

In response, the NHAI’s counsel defended the notification, stating that the authority sought to test a candidate’s legal acumen through CLAT-PG scores. The counsel argued that CLAT scores provided a reasonable benchmark for assessing candidates. He also emphasized that while the selection was primarily based on CLAT results, candidates’ experience was also taken into consideration.

The petitioner challenged the NHAI’s directive to engage 44 young professionals solely on the basis of scores obtained in CLAT 2022 and subsequent editions of the postgraduate law admissions test. He argued that restricting recruitment to candidates who appeared for CLAT-PG from 2022 onwards was arbitrary and unreasonable.

“The recruitment is restricted only to candidates who appeared in CLAT 2022 and onward PG, ignoring all other law graduates and practising advocates who are otherwise fully qualified. The criteria of restricting selection exclusively on the basis of CLAT 2022 onward (post-graduate) score is arbitrary, irrational,” the plea stated.

India-US Trade Ties To Strengthen With Focus On Energy Security: Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal

**India Seeks to Boost Energy Trade with the US, Highlights Strategic Partnership**

*New York:* India aims to significantly increase its trade with the United States in energy products in the coming years, with a strong emphasis on US involvement in achieving the country’s energy security goals, said Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.

“Clearly, the world recognizes that energy security is one area where we all have to work together. India is a big player in the energy field; we are major importers of energy from across the world, including from the US,” Goyal stated on Tuesday during his keynote address at an event titled *Energy Security in a Shifting Global Landscape: Building Resilient Energy Markets Across Borders.* The event was hosted by the Consulate General of India in New York, the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), and ReNew, India’s leading decarbonisation solutions provider.

“We expect to increase our trade with the US on energy products in the years to come. Being close friends and natural partners, our energy security goals will have a very high element of US involvement. This partnership will ensure price stability, diversified sources of energy for India, and help us unlock limitless possibilities with the US on various fronts, energy and beyond,” he added.

Goyal is currently leading a delegation in New York, engaging with US counterparts to reach an early conclusion of a bilateral trade agreement.

Noting the significance of the day, Goyal mentioned that September 22 marks the commencement of Navratri, an auspicious period in the Hindu calendar. “It is said that on this day, things are expected to turn for the better,” he remarked.

Distinguished dignitaries attending the event included Member of Parliament Anurag Thakur, Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Pankaj Jain, USISPF CEO and President Mukesh Agni, ReNew co-founder Vaishali Nigam Sinha, and ReNew Chairman and CEO Sumant Sinha.

### Collaboration on Nuclear Power and Critical Minerals

Goyal highlighted nuclear power as another key area for Indo-US collaboration. “It’s an area we’ve been discussing for a long time. Some elements needed to be addressed, and I believe we are now working to support private efforts in nuclear power in India,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of securing resilient critical mineral supplies and diversifying sources to prevent the weaponization of trade. “We need to build infrastructure, particularly transmission grid infrastructure both within countries and across borders, which can become the backbone of the clean energy transition for various nations.”

“We all must seriously work to align our regulatory frameworks to enable cross-border energy trade without concerns that geopolitics will undermine energy resilience or security,” Goyal added.

India continues to invest in nuclear energy with ambitions to double its capacity in the coming years through government intervention, while also planning to expand on a larger scale. “There are challenges related to price and energy costs that must be addressed to make nuclear power more competitive,” he noted.

### Ambitious Clean Energy Expansion

Goyal described India as being in a “sweet spot” to expand its clean energy capacity, projecting growth from 250 gigawatts to 500 gigawatts over the next five years.

He also commented on the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), warning of its wide-ranging implications. “In fact, it could isolate the EU and hurt their economy, making them akin to a small island. While others continue trading, the EU may face inflation, unviable infrastructure costs, and loss of market share in exports,” Goyal explained.

He cautioned against green protectionism, describing it as “like a trap. If someone buries their head in the sand, they may find it very difficult to come out.”

‘Harbouring UN-Proscribed Terrorists, Bombing Own People’: India Tears Into Pakistan At UNHRC Over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Strikes By PAF; VIDEO

**India Hits Back at Pakistan Over Air Strikes at the UN Human Rights Council**

*New York:* India on Tuesday strongly responded to Pakistan during the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session, delivering a sharp rebuttal over recent allegations and cross-border tensions.

India’s representative, Kshitij Tyagi, referenced the air strikes conducted by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which reportedly killed at least 30 civilians. He accused Pakistan of abusing the UNHRC platform with baseless and provocative statements targeted at India.

“A delegation that epitomises the antithesis of this approach continues to abuse this forum with baseless and provocative statements against India,” Tyagi said. “Instead of coveting our territory, they would do well to vacate the Indian territory under their illegal occupation and focus on rescuing an economy on life support, a polity muzzled by military dominance, and a human rights record stained by persecution,” he added.

Tyagi further criticized Pakistan, stating, “Perhaps once they find time away from exporting terrorism, harbouring UN-proscribed terrorists, and bombing their own people,” they might engage constructively.

These remarks came during the discussion on Agenda Item 4 at the UNHRC session. A video of Tyagi’s response to Pakistan has since gone viral.

The backdrop to this exchange involves reports that surfaced on Monday, revealing that at least 30 civilians, including women and children, were killed in air strikes conducted by the PAF in Matre Dara village in the Tirah Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The attacks reportedly took place in the early hours of Sunday, September 21.

According to these reports, the PAF used JF-17 Thunder jets to drop at least eight LS-6 precision glide bombs on the civilian settlement. However, the Pakistan Army has denied these media reports.

Earlier, Amnesty International had criticized Pakistan’s counter-terrorism operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, describing them as demonstrating an “alarming disregard for civilian life.”

Eyewitnesses claimed that several houses collapsed during the alleged air strikes, with bodies being pulled out from the rubble afterward.

This latest confrontation at the UNHRC underscores the continuing tensions between India and Pakistan, with both sides trading accusations amidst ongoing regional instability.

Donald Trump Tells NATO To Shoot Down Russian Jets Crossing Airspace In Fresh Jibe At Putin

When asked by reporters if he believed NATO should take action against Russian aircraft crossing their airspace, Donald Trump responded affirmatively. “Yes, I do,” Trump said on Tuesday, asserting that NATO should shoot down Russian aircraft entering their airspace. He made these remarks while speaking to reporters after meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

During the meeting, when asked about NATO shoot-downs, Trump reiterated, “Yes, I do.”

In response, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte adopted a more measured stance. According to a report by US broadcaster CNN, Rutte emphasized that shoot-down decisions should depend on available intelligence regarding the threat posed by the aircraft. He noted, “This also includes questions we have to answer like intent, armaments and potential risk to allies, forces, civilians or infrastructure. We will always assess the situation, assess the immediate threat the plane poses.”

These comments came shortly after the first direct encounters between NATO and Moscow since the start of the Ukraine war. Alleged incursions of Russian aircraft over Poland, Estonia, and other NATO countries have recently tested the alliance’s preparedness and credibility in deterring Russia. For instance, Russian jets reportedly violated Estonian airspace, prompting Tallinn to call for an urgent meeting.

Meanwhile, Trump suggested that Ukraine has the potential to reclaim more than just the territory it has lost to Russia since the war began in February 2022. In a Truth Social post following his meeting with Zelenskyy at the United Nations, Trump wrote:
“I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form.”

He added that Kyiv could possibly go even further, although he did not provide specifics on what he meant by that statement.

Jimmy Kimmel’s Show Set To Return On Air, But Still May Face Partial Boycott

Despite ABC revoking Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension, Nexstar and Sinclair have refused to air his show over concerns of “insensitivity” following his remarks about the MAGA movement.

A day after ABC lifted the suspension order on Jimmy Kimmel’s show, several local TV stations chose not to broadcast the program, citing its insensitivity. According to the BBC, Nexstar and Sinclair—which together operate dozens of ABC-affiliated stations—announced they would continue to replace the show with regular programming on Tuesday.

Sinclair’s vice-chairman, Jason Smith, stated, “Mr. Kimmel’s remarks were inappropriate and deeply insensitive at a critical moment for our country.”

The late-night talk show was abruptly pulled last week after Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr and affiliate networks threatened ABC in response to Kimmel’s comments during a monologue about the MAGA movement’s reaction to Charlie Kirk’s assassination attempt.

This decision sparked a debate between supporters of former President Donald Trump’s administration and advocates of Kimmel regarding government interference and freedom of speech.

On Monday, over 400 artists—including Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, and Jennifer Aniston—signed an open letter organized by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to express their support for Kimmel, CNN reported.

Following this, a spokesperson for the Walt Disney Company, ABC’s parent company, told CNN, “We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

Family reunites as activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah returns home after 12 years in Egyptian prison

CAIRO (AP) — The downtown Cairo apartment of Alaa Abd el-Fattah was filled with laughter and joy Tuesday as family and friends gathered to absorb the long-awaited news: the pro-democracy Egyptian-British activist had finally walked free.

Abd el-Fattah was pardoned by President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and released Monday after spending almost all of the past 12 years in prison. He and five other prisoners had been pardoned after the National Council for Human Rights acted on behalf of their families, urging the president to consider their situations on humanitarian grounds.

“I felt a wave of sudden relief as if my body had been clenched tight for years and was finally loosening and just now releasing a weight that I have been carrying,” Abd el-Fattah’s sister, Sanaa Seif, told The Associated Press at the family apartment. She is one of the family members who waged an international campaign for his release.

Seif was walking her dog when the news broke that her brother had been pardoned. As her phone rang nonstop with calls and notifications, she and her family drove to Wadi Natroun prison, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) outside Cairo, to pick him up. They then received a call from a neighbor’s phone: it was Abd el-Fattah himself, telling them he had already arrived at the family’s house.

‘Wrapped by a layer of sadness’

Abd el-Fattah was first sent to prison in 2014 for participating in an unauthorized protest and allegedly assaulting a police officer, before being released in early 2019. He was arrested again in September 2019 during a security crackdown that followed rare anti-government protests in Egypt.

After more than two years in pretrial detention, an emergency security court sentenced him to five years for spreading false news. When his release date came up in September 2024, authorities refused to count his time in pretrial detention and ordered him held until January 3, 2027.

When Egypt didn’t release Abd el-Fattah last September, his mother, Laila Soueif, began her own hunger strike in Britain but became seriously ill and ended the strike in July. Soueif, a mathematics professor at Cairo University who was born in London, helped her son obtain British citizenship in 2021, hoping it would lead to his release.

Due to her deteriorating health from the hunger strike, Soueif frequently received treatment at St. Thomas’s Hospital in London. She ended the strike in July after multiple appeals from family and friends. Seif said Tuesday that her mother is “miraculously doing better” despite some lingering health issues.

Abd el-Fattah’s family is still adjusting to his freedom. His sister said she is slowly getting used to hearing her brother’s voice in the background again.

“Our happiness, no matter how huge, is wrapped by a layer of sadness because the situation [in Egypt] is bad,” Soueif said. “Real happiness will not be complete unless those unjustly detained are released.”

A family looks to the future

With Abd el-Fattah now free, his family is looking to the future. Soueif said her son will likely settle a few matters in the U.K. for the sake of his son Khaled, and that she will return to teaching at the university next week.

“I’m going back to my regular life as a faculty teaching member living in Egypt and expressing opposition against the government when I see something wrong,” she said.

Abd el-Fattah previously took part in the 2011 uprising that toppled autocratic former President Hosni Mubarak, and later was active in protests against human rights abuses and military trials of civilians.

An influential blogger, Abd el-Fattah hails from a family of political activists, lawyers, and writers. His late father was one of Egypt’s most tireless rights lawyers, his sisters — British citizens as well — are also political activists, and his aunt is the award-winning novelist Ahdaf Soueif.

Thameen Al-Kheetan, a spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, praised Egypt’s decision to release Abd el-Fattah in a statement Tuesday and called “on Egypt to ensure the release of all those arbitrarily detained.”
