Symbols of offering

Every year, during the Islamic month of Rabi al-Thani, devotees of Abdul Qadir Gilani gather on the banks of the Ravi River to participate in a unique and heartfelt tradition. They launch paper boats carrying lighted clay lamps and other symbolic offerings into the river.

This ritual serves as a means for devotees to make wishes or to express gratitude after their wishes have been fulfilled. It is a deeply spiritual practice that reflects devotion and hope.

The event is part of the celebrations commemorating the urs, or death anniversary, of the revered Sufi saint Abdul Qadir Gilani. This occasion, known as Gyarwin Shareef, falls on the 11th of Rabi al-Thani each year.

Through this beautiful custom, followers come together to honor the saint’s memory and seek blessings, creating a serene and meaningful atmosphere along the riverbanks.

Is Sanatan dharma a Pagan faith?

Many Sanatanis today like to describe Hinduism as the mother of all dharmic religions, and sometimes even as the mother of all pagan faiths. This obsession with the word *pagan* is not native to India. It comes from Europe and America. In the 1960s and ’70s, hippies who disliked Judaism and Christianity, or who wanted to weaponize Hinduism against Islam, embraced this word and dragged it into Hindu conversations.

The word *pagan* itself has a strange history. Early Christians used it to mean peasants, rustic folk, people outside the army of Christ. It carried a sense of backwardness. Modern scholars now say the word comes from *pagus*, the smallest administrative unit of the Roman Empire. Those who worshipped local gods of the *pagus* were called pagans.

Seen this way, religion can be divided into two broad categories. One kind is tied to a place. It honours local gods and spirits of hills, rivers, groves, or villages. The other kind transcends geography. It builds on doctrine, not landscape. India has both. Every region has its local gods, but over these gods, Vedic ideas—detached from any single location—take precedence.

Christianity works the same way. It started in Jerusalem, then Rome became its centre, but it does not depend on either city. Islam, too, broke free of geography. Its followers do not worship local gods. They face Mecca, and Mecca alone, the seat of the god of Arabia.

Europe before Christianity was full of local religions. These were later branded *pagan*. Over time, pagans were imagined in very different ways. Some called them noble savages, close to nature. Others called them wicked savages who had to be tamed.

In the 18th century, with the rise of evolutionary theories, people placed pagan religions somewhere between primitive savagery and refined monotheism. Germans glorified their Viking ancestors as pure gods of the land, uncorrupted by Christianity. Admirers of Greece and Rome saw their paganism as sophisticated—until it was supposedly polluted by eastern rituals.

In England, the Industrial Revolution destroyed woods and groves. Intellectuals mourned and romanticized the pagan past as a lost paradise. In France, less industrialized, pagan nature worship looked sinister, even satanic.

By the Victorian age, when Christianity became increasingly puritanical, paganism was recast as free-spirited. It was imagined as a religion of the body, celebrating love and sexuality. But this pagan past was not remembered—it was invented. Christianity and modernity created the image of the pagan to suit their own needs.

Paganism became a mirror for anxieties about nature, body, and morality. Pagans were the other—those who did not align.

The countless local gods of Hindu villages were never wiped out. But they were reinterpreted. Vedic and Vedantic doctrines were layered on them. What was once a forest spirit became a form of Vishnu, Shiva, or Shakti. In this way, local faiths were whitewashed, given a respectable Sanskritic coating.

In the 19th century, many intellectual Hindus insisted that Hinduism was not pagan. They shunned the tree and animal worship part of Hinduism and focused on Vedanta. Today, politicians have realized that vote banks believe in old village and tribal rituals. Hence, in the 21st century, it makes sense to refer to Hindus as pagans, distinct from monotheistic religions like Islam and Christianity.

Covering the basics

Thousands of residents of Farash Town and James Town in the twin cities are celebrating improved access to clean drinking water. In addition to this vital resource, they have also acquired valuable skills such as water reuse and aquifer recharge through rainwater harvesting techniques. These achievements are part of a comprehensive megaproject focused on enhancing water security.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Pakistan and the Australia-Pakistan Water Security Initiative, an Australian Aid-funded project aimed at strengthening cooperation between Australia and Pakistan on urban water resources management. This megaproject consists of a series of smaller projects, all scheduled to become operational by the end of December and expected to be maintained with active community involvement.

The primary goal of the project is to tailor, adopt, and demonstrate the Water Sensitive Cities approach in Pakistan. Both Islamabad and Rawalpindi are among the cities anticipated to face increasing water scarcity in the coming years. As a pilot, the project focused on two neighborhoods within these twin cities: James Town in Rawalpindi and Farash Town in Islamabad.

James Town is home to over 450 Christian households and has long struggled with acute water shortages. Farash Town, with a population exceeding 20,000, also faces severe water scarcity and declining groundwater levels.

Yasmin Bibi, a resident of Farash Town, shared her experience with The News on Sunday: “Our area had a severe water shortage. The water table had also gone down. With the help of these projects, we were able to recharge the aquifer and get water from filtration plants installed at various places in the town.”

WWF installed seven water filtration plants—five located throughout the neighborhood and two within large local schools—providing clean drinking water to approximately 24,500 people. Remarkably, these filtration plants are maintained by the community itself.

Imran Ali, another resident, described the impact: “This is a blessing for us. Earlier, many families had to travel to the Chak Shahzad government filtration plant to fetch water, often hiring a rickshaw. Now, we have clean drinking water right at our doorstep.”

He added, “Before this project, many who could afford it were selling their properties and moving to other parts of the city due to water shortages. Now, our lives and priorities have changed. It is such a relief not to have to go out of our way for something as basic as water.”

Since its inception in April 2021, the WWF has installed a wide array of infrastructure in both communities. In James Town, these efforts include 275 rainwater harvesting systems (RWHS), six water recharge interventions, two green spaces, three filtration plants (two large, one small), 15 solid waste skips, two rain gardens, and a sewerage system servicing 450 houses.

In Farash Town, WWF implemented 375 rainwater harvesting systems, four ablution water reuse systems, 31 recharge interventions, three green spaces, three communal RWHS, seven filtration plants (five large, two small), four solid waste skips, and two rain gardens.

Farah Nadeem, the project lead, emphasized the importance of such initiatives: “These projects serve as serious demonstrations of sustainable water management models and create much-needed awareness about water security.” She further noted that water security topics have been integrated into the local school curriculum as part of the initiative.

Through this project, WWF-Pakistan has not only improved access to safe water and sanitation for two disadvantaged communities but also enhanced community resilience to climate change and other water-related challenges. Capacity building for key stakeholders on water use and conservation has been another critical outcome.

Pakistan is one of the most water-stressed countries globally, with an average per capita water availability of just 964 cubic meters annually. Scientific studies indicate ongoing depletion of groundwater resources, exacerbating climate change-induced vulnerabilities for millions already suffering from shortages of water, food, health services, and energy security.

This collaborative water security initiative offers hope and a sustainable model for addressing Pakistan’s urgent water challenges, directly benefiting communities in the twin cities and beyond.

Keegan Bradley SNAPS at press conference as America spirals at Ryder Cup amid fan chaos

A bristling Keegan Bradley refused to condemn the appalling abuse hurled at Europe’s stars during a fiery second day of the Ryder Cup.

The tournament took an ugly turn on Saturday when fans and players alike came close to blows on a tense day marked by hostile behavior and crass abuse. On a day when the notorious New Yorkers finally found their voice — for better and definitely for worse — Europe continued to humiliate the Americans on their own turf, taking a historic seven-point lead into the final day at Bethpage Black.

However, the carnage from the infamously rabid New York sports fans that had long been prophesized finally reared its ugly head at the Ryder Cup. Personalized abuse was hurled at the European stars — public enemy No. 1 Rory McIlroy in particular — before the players themselves began lashing out in retaliation. Bethpage almost witnessed a repeat of the renowned caddie spat of Marco Simone on a highly charged, frantic afternoon.

But Keegan Bradley refused to condemn the bedlam, characterizing it as passion from the home supporters.

“I thought the fans were passionate,” he told reporters. “I mean, their home team is getting beat bad. You know, they are passionate fans. I wasn’t at Rome, but I heard a lot of stories that Rome was pretty violent as well.

“But the fans of New York, from what I have seen, have been pretty good. You’re always going to have a few people that cross the line, and that’s unfortunate. I was happy to see our players trying to quiet down some people that were like that.”

Bradley then appeared to suggest that some of the blame lay with his team and their failure to rise to the occasion.

“Part of it our fault,” he added. “We are not playing up to the standards that they want to see, and they are angry, and they should be.”

However, he performed a hasty U-turn when pressed further on the issue, insisting he did not hold his players responsible.

“I did not say that. That’s not what I said,” he defiantly said after being questioned on his comment. “I said the fans are probably upset that their home team is losing. I did not say that.”

He further snapped at a reporter who pointed to players such as Collin Morikawa, who had called for “chaos” from the crowd earlier in the week.

“I don’t appreciate those words that you just said. I know what you’re trying to do,” he bit back. “The Ryder Cup is full of passionate fans. They’re full of passionate players. And that wasn’t right.”

On Friday’s opening day, the New Yorkers’ reputation appeared to be all bark and no bite. But on Saturday, they had sharpened their teeth.

The home supporters not only crossed the line—they barreled over it with their particularly vile insults at McIlroy and his wife, Erica, which led to a series of ejections.

Sources told The Daily Mail that extra security had to be rushed to McIlroy and Shane Lowry’s match against Justin Thomas and Cameron Young shortly after McIlroy refused to continue playing until “they shut up.”

Shane Lowry also snapped at a fan, with the unsavory incident caught on camera. It was unclear what was said to leave the Irishman so angry or if the insult was aimed at him or McIlroy, but he appeared to be held back by his caddie before pointing the fan out to security to have them removed.

However, Europe’s Luke Donald insisted the highly charged atmosphere only fueled his players’ drive.

“Things got tougher out there, and it fired them up even more,” the European captain said. “They were able to get better through those difficult moments out there. That is what makes me most proud as a captain — just their ability to take the punches and come back even stronger.”

“It was loud. It was raucous,” he added. “What I consider crossing the line is personal insults and making sounds when they are trying to hit on their backswings or very close to when they are trying to go into their routines. That did happen a little bit. It’s happened at other Ryder Cups, too.

“It’s something we prepared for, and I can see how well they have dealt with it.”

Around the 12th tee, police told The Daily Mail they were instructed to stay with Bryson DeChambeau’s group due to fears of tension spilling over. Three holes later, tensions indeed boiled over.

The American and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler were trailing 3-down to Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose on the 15th when, for a second straight Ryder Cup, a player and caddie became embroiled in a fiery exchange.

In scenes reminiscent of McIlroy’s greenside row with Patrick Cantlay’s bagman, Joe LaCava, from Rome, Rose appeared unhappy with DeChambeau’s caddie, Greg Bodine, walking onto the green as he lined up a putt. Rose still holed the putt but on the walk to the 16th, Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, and European vice-captain Franco Molinari began arguing, with Fleetwood standing between them.

Fleetwood also appeared to exchange words with DeChambeau on his way off the 15th green.

Tennessee escapes Mississippi State in overtime 41-34

Wow. The Tennessee Volunteers defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs 41-34 in overtime in a game that’s hard to wrap your head around.

Joey Aguilar was 24-of-40 passing for 335 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions—both of which came after the ball bounced off Miles Kitselman’s hands and flew into the air. DeSean Bishop led Tennessee on the ground with 72 yards on 11 carries and scored the go-ahead 25-yard touchdown in overtime. Mike Matthews had six catches for 118 yards, while Chris Brazzell II caught six passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.

This was a game full of errors and missed opportunities, beginning when Tennessee’s Braylon Staley muffed a punt. Mississippi State recovered at the UT 20-yard line and quickly capitalized, taking just five plays to reach the end zone and grab a 7-0 lead.

After a Tennessee field goal and some defensive punts, Colton Hood intercepted Blake Shapen and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown. Mississippi State responded with two lengthy drives, taking a 17-10 lead in the second quarter.

But Tennessee answered back with a quick, four-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a 15-yard touchdown catch from Brazzell, tying the game at 17. Max Gilbert missed a field goal later in the half, and both teams went into halftime knotted up at 17.

Tennessee opened the second half with a long field goal drive, but Mississippi State missed a field goal on their next possession. Aguilar’s first interception of the game gave the Bulldogs a short field, and they took advantage with a 1-yard touchdown run by Fluff Bothwell to go up 24-20.

Early in the fourth quarter near midfield, Mississippi State converted a fake punt on 4th-and-7 and seemed poised to extend their lead. However, on the very next play, Tyre West broke around the edge and sacked Shapen, forcing a fumble. Joshua Josephs scooped up the loose ball and returned it to give Tennessee a 27-24 lead.

After a State field goal, Aguilar’s second tipped interception handed the Bulldogs yet another short field. Once again, Mississippi State capitalized with a 2-yard touchdown pass to take a 34-27 advantage with eight minutes left.

But Aguilar and the Volunteers’ offense responded with one of their best drives of the season. They marched 75 yards on 13 plays in just over six minutes, finishing with a designed 6-yard quarterback run by Aguilar to tie the game with two minutes remaining.

Tennessee quickly forced a three-and-out and got the ball back at their own 26-yard line with 1:23 left and all three timeouts intact. Unfortunately, Josh Heupel’s clock management during the final drive was, quite simply, atrocious. The Volunteers moved 30 yards to just past midfield with four seconds left and two timeouts remaining, but a final Hail Mary fell incomplete, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, Bishop’s 25-yard touchdown run on the first play gave Tennessee the lead. Although Mississippi State advanced to first-and-goal at the six-yard line, Tennessee’s defense stiffened — a rarity for Saturday. They broke up a fourth-down pass in the end zone, sealing the Volunteers’ 41-34 victory.

Tennessee now heads into a much-needed bye week. So, Vol fans, breathe easy—a win is a win. But there’s clearly a lot to work on after today’s rollercoaster of a game.
