The countdown to the Upside Down’s final chapter is officially on. Stranger Things season 5 has fans buzzing as Netflix’s hit sci-fi series prepares to wrap up its story after nearly a decade. Since its explosive debut in 2016, the show has become a cultural phenomenon, and now, the long-awaited final season is almost here. While production was originally set to begin in 2023, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused major delays across Hollywood, pushing filming for season 5 into 2024. But now, things are back on track and it won’t be long before Eleven and the gang return for one last ride. Hollywood Life has rounded up all the latest news we know about the fifth and final season. ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Release Date Stranger Things will release its season 5 episodes in three parts: four episodes on November 26, 2025, three on December 25, and the finale on December 31 in select theaters in the U. S. and Canada. How to Watch the ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Finale Screenings of the season 5 finale will be available in 350 theaters across the country and in Canada starting at 5 p. m. PT on December 31, and it will run through January 1, 2026. The finale’s global premiere will still take place on Netflix. What Is ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 About? The show will be coming full circle in the final season. The focus will be back on Will Byers in Stranger Things 5. “Will really takes center stage again in 5,” Ross Duffer told Variety for Noah Schnapp’s Power of Young Hollywood cover story, which was released on August 7. “This emotional arc for him is what we feel is going to hopefully tie the whole series together. Will is used to being the young one, the introverted one, the one that’s being protected. So part of his journey, it’s not just sexuality it’s Will coming into his own as a young man. Just as filming was about to get underway in May 2023, the Duffers released a note on the official Stranger Things writers’ page and gave an update about the status of season 5. “Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then over and out. #wgastrong,” the Duffers tweeted. The Writers Guild of America went on strike on May 1 after negotiations broke down between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which includes companies like Netflix, Amazon, and Disney. The members of the WGA are asking for increased pay, better residuals, staffing requirements, and clarification about the use of AI. Almost two months later, SAG-AFTRA also went on strike. As of August 2023, both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA are still on strike. On March 21, 2023, the Stranger Things writers’ Twitter account gave a little Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Noah Schnapp (Will), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Sadie Sink (Max), Natalie Dyer (Nancy), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan), Joe Keery (Steve), and Maya Hawke (Robin). The series veterans Winona Ryder (Joyce) and David Harbour (Hopper) will also return, rounding out the original lineup. In addition, Brett Gelman (Murray Bauman), Cara Buono (Karen Wheeler), and Amybeth McNulty (Vickie) are all confirmed to return in Season 5. Hollywood Life spoke exclusively with Cara Buono in 2023, and she shared her hopes for one last classic Wheeler family dinner scene. “I hope that there are more of like, in season one, there were a lot of family dinners,” Cara said. “And I loved when the kids came over for dinner. so I hope there’s at least one big dinner at the Wheelers where the kids come over and there’s a lot of awkward stuff going on. That would be really, really fun.” Jamie Campbell Bower is also set to return as Vecna, and according to him, the villain is far from finished. “He’s pissed, he’s properly vexed,” Jamie told NME. “He’s rebuilding, and he’s out for blood. That classic Jason Voorhees thing-you’ve made a big mistake.” Maya Hawke opened up to Rolling Stone in 2022 about what she hopes for Robin in the final season. “Well, it’s the last season, so people are probably going to die. I would love to die and get my hero’s moment. But I love the way that the Duffer Brothers love their actors. and they don’t want to kill them. I think that’s a beautiful quality.” She also teased she’d be down for a spinoff-but only if it included co-star Joe Keery, who plays Robin’s best friend, Steve. “He’s so funny and wonderful and smart. I would do anything with him.” And in a surprise reveal at Netflix’s 2023 TUDUM event, Arnold Schwarzenegger helped announce that Linda Hamilton his legendary Terminator co-star joined the cast. I’ll see you in Hawkins.” Netflix later confirmed Hamilton’s casting with a signature upside-down photo on the Stranger Things Instagram account. Additional new cast members include Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler, Jake Connelly as Derek, and Alex Breaux as Lt. Akers, among others. ‘Stranger Things’ Run So Far Stranger Things became a global phenomenon when it premiered on Netflix in 2016. The series catapulted the young stars to superstardom, and they have grown up before our eyes. Following the success of the second season, the cast reportedly scored major pay raises for season 3 and beyond, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The cast was divided into “different pay tiers” with Winona and David making up the “A tier” that earned them up to $350,000 an episode. The “B tier” included the younger stars like Finn, Gaten, Caleb, and Noah, who started making $250,000 an episode. The “C tier” featured the older kids Natalia, Charlie, and Joe who began making $150,000 an episode in season 3. At the time, it couldn’t be confirmed exactly what Millie was making. After making $30,000 per episode alongside Finn, Gaten, and Caleb, Millie separated herself from the rest of the cast during renegotiations. For season 3, Millie was at least making $250,000 like her fellow young actors, but sources told THR she could be making as high as $350,000 per episode or in her own tier of $300,000 per episode. What Happened In Season 4? Stranger Things season 4 introduced the show’s biggest bad yet: Vecna. The Upside Down was created after Eleven battled Henry Creel, who also happened to be One, the first child to be experimented on by Dr. Brenner. When Eleven was a child, Henry/One posed as Peter Ballard at the Hawkins Lab. Once he gained Eleven’s trust, he betrayed her and killed the other children at the lab. Henry/One faced off against a young Eleven, and she opened the first gate to the Upside Down as she tried to destroy him. Henry/One didn’t die when he was thrown into the Upside Down. Vecna was born. Vecna is the one behind all the chaos that’s been wreaking havoc in Hawkins. In Volume 2 of Stranger Things season 4, the Hawkins crew (with Eleven’s help) tried to take down Vecna. In the midst of this fight, Eddie sacrificed himself and died in Dustin’s arms, Eleven infiltrated Max’s mind, Jason and Lucas got into a brutal fight, and Max was nearly killed by Vecna. Joseph Quinn became an instant star after his breakout performance as Eddie Munson. Even though Eddie died in season 4, many fans hope that Eddie will return in season 5. “He feels kind of gone, it feels pretty hard to bring him back, I’d say, but, I don’t know,” Joseph told Access about possibly returning. Shawn Levy spoke about Eddie’s possible return in an interview on the 2022 Emmy Awards red carpet. “A lot of people can’t even handle the thought of a season five without some excuse for Eddie present, he told The Hollywood Reporter. “Highly unlikely, but we hear you world. We know you’re obsessed with Eddie. So are we.” Joyce and Hopper finally kissed and got out of Russia with Murray. They returned home where they reunited with their kids. However, the current state of Hawkins is borderline ruin. Max did die for a moment before she was brought back to life by Eleven. Max’s death allowed Vecna to get that fourth kill he needed to open the last gate. The faultlines created by the 4 collided at the center of Hawkins, creating massive openings to the Upside Down. The end of the season 4 finale showed the effects of the Upside Down creeping in on Hawkins, and the biggest fight for Eleven and the others is still ahead. Meanwhile, Max is in a coma after her confrontation with Vecna. “Now that I’m here in Hawkins, I can feel him,” Will said to Mike about Vecna. “And he’s hurt. He’s hurting. But he’s still alive. It’s strange, knowing now who it was this whole time, but I can still remember what he thinks and how he thinks. And he’s not going to stop. Ever. Not until he’s taken everything. And everyone. We have to kill him.” Is ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 the Last One? Yes, Netflix and the crew behind the series have said that season 5 is its final one.

Rosé’s Historic Radio Record Has Been Tied — Will She Be Beaten?
Since mid-August, “Golden,” the worldwide behemoth that emerged from Netflix’s hugely successful animated musical *KPop Demon Hunters*, has ranked as one of the biggest songs in America. The tune has enjoyed several runs at No. 1 on the Hot 100, and even when it hasn’t appeared in the top spot, “Golden” rarely strays far from the summit.
This was especially true until Taylor Swift invaded the chart with all 12 songs featured on her blockbuster *The Life of a Showgirl*. Now, as the tunes from Swift’s latest album begin to dwindle in popularity, “Golden” is in the midst of something of a comeback. The track is making a play to return to the Hot 100’s summit, while also holding at its all-time peak on the Radio Songs ranking in what has turned out to be a historic space.
### “Golden” Holds at Its All-Time Radio Chart High
This week, “Golden” is steady at No. 4 on the Radio Songs list. Billboard’s Radio Songs chart ranks the individual tracks that reach the largest total audience throughout America, regardless of how many stations are playing the tune or what format it’s being promoted to.
“Golden,” which is credited to the fictional girl group Huntr/x as well as artists Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, reached No. 4 recently and made history when it pushed to that spot.
### “Golden” Ties Record for Highest-Rising K-Pop Hit Ever
“Golden” is now tied as the highest-rising hit by any K-pop act in the history of the Radio Songs chart. The *KPop Demon Hunters* smash shares this distinction with “Apt.” by Blackpink star Rosé and Bruno Mars. That track also stalled at No. 4 and, for a short time, claimed this record on its own—but now it shares the spotlight with “Golden.”
### 2025 Has Been Huge for K-Pop on American Radio
It’s telling that the two highest-peaking hits of all time by K-pop artists on one of Billboard’s most competitive song charts both reached their historic slots in 2025. K-pop has been growing in popularity in America for well over a decade, and each year, seeing South Korean artists, groups, songs, and albums rise higher and last longer on the charts becomes increasingly common.
Even radio — which for many years was hesitant to embrace the K-pop craze — seems to have fundamentally changed. Now, there’s room not only on niche formats, but also in mainstream Top 40 pop and other similar fields, for K-pop stars to thrive.
### Will “Golden” Outlast “Apt.” on the Radio Songs Chart?
There is a big difference between “Golden” and “Apt.” in their lives on the Radio Songs chart so far. “Apt.” fell away after 41 weeks on the ranking, which remains far and away the longest stretch ever enjoyed by any track credited to an artist typically associated with K-pop.
“Golden” reached the same heights as “Apt.” in just its tenth week on the roster. Of course, “Golden” will continue to appear inside the Top 10 for at least a few more weeks, and it might even climb higher, potentially surpassing Rosé and Bruno Mars.
When the decline eventually comes, whether it takes weeks or months, “Golden” might match or even beat the 41-week record set by “Apt.”
### “Ordinary” Leads American Radio as “Golden” Gains Momentum
The current edition of the Radio Songs tally is led by “Ordinary” from relative newcomer Alex Warren. This week marks the track’s nineteenth consecutive week at No. 1, making it the third-longest-running ruler among all songs in the tally’s history.
Between “Ordinary” and “Golden” are Justin Bieber’s “Daisies” and Leon Thomas’s breakout hit “Mutt,” which are steady at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
All three tracks are major hits in the U.S., but “Golden” has a lot of momentum behind it and could gain again in the coming weeks, perhaps even making a play to become the first K-pop No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart.

4 genuinely good Netflix movies to watch this week (November 3 – 9)
We’re barreling towards the end of the year. Who can believe it’s already November? On the bright side, with a new month comes a new batch of films landing on Netflix, and I’ve picked out four that are genuinely worth watching this week. Don’t take my word for it — all of these are certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, so put away the fruit and grab some popcorn!
### 4. True Grit
It’s difficult to pick a favorite Coen brothers movie; some might say *No Country for Old Men* or *Fargo*. For me, nothing beats *True Grit*. I’m fond of the 1968 novel by Charles Portis, which this movie adapts (rather than remaking the less faithful 1969 John Wayne version), and I’m always a sucker for modern and classic Westerns alike.
But even if you aren’t predisposed to the genre or aware of the source material, *True Grit* is simply a gripping watch: masterful performances, wonderful cinematography from the legendary Roger Deakins, and rich dialogue.
The story follows a no-nonsense 14-year-old named Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), who hires the tough Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to capture Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), the outlaw who murdered her father. Joining the duo is Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), who is in pursuit of Chaney for a separate murder.
You would expect the established actors to be great, and indeed they are, but it’s then-newcomer Steinfeld who steals the show, portraying her character with steely determination and more than holding her own. Amazingly, this was her first professional feature-length acting credit, for which she received an Academy Award nomination.
### 3. Back to the Future
“Are you telling me you built a time machine out of a DeLorean?”
If you’re talking about iconic movies, it’s impossible not to mention *Back to the Future*. Having recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, this Robert Zemeckis-directed film never gets old and stands up to repeated rewatches.
If you’ve somehow never seen *Back to the Future*, what are you waiting for? It’s about teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox), who accidentally goes back in time from 1985 to 1955, traveling in a souped-up automobile created by his friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd).
Marty not only needs to figure out how to get back to the present day but also must protect his future existence by ensuring his parents fall in love.
Part of what makes *Back to the Future* so good is because of how accessible it is. Sure, it’s technically a sci-fi, but it’s not as heavy as that genre label might suggest. It’s charming and funny, with a perfectly paced plot that lets the characters shine.
Those characters are great on the page, but the actors elevate them to another level. For starters, Michael J. Fox’s charisma could carry anything, and Christopher Lloyd is hilarious as the eccentric scientist. Alongside them, you have Lea Thompson as Marty’s flirty mother Lorraine, Crispin Glover as his mega-awkward father George, and Thomas F. Wilson as the dim bully Biff. It’s a recipe for success.
Thankfully, Hollywood has yet to tarnish its legacy with a remake.
### 2. Doctor Sleep
If you want to get into horror movies, the unsettling classic *The Shining* is a must-see. It’s directed by Stanley Kubrick and adapted from the Stephen King novel of the same name. While the film is great, King dislikes it because he feels it didn’t capture the spirit of his book.
He wrote a sequel novel in 2013, which director Mike Flanagan adapted in 2019 with *Doctor Sleep* — a film more respectful to the source material.
Set around 30 years after the events of the Overlook Hotel, *Doctor Sleep* follows a now-adult Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) dealing with his past and battling a cult that kills and feeds on people who possess the same supernatural ability he does.
While you could technically watch *Doctor Sleep* as a standalone, it doesn’t disregard Kubrick’s production. This is why I recommend you check out *The Shining* first, if you haven’t already, so that you can really appreciate the sequel. You’ll have a deeper understanding of the central character, and some scenes will be more effective.
Whatever the case, *Doctor Sleep* is creepy, stylish, and boasts some great performances from McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson.
### 1. Game Night
When I first saw *Game Night*, I went in with no expectations and was blown away by how hilarious, inventive, and action-packed it was.
The 2018 movie, directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, stars Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams as Max and Anne Davis, a competitive couple who host a regular game night with their friends.
When Max’s brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler) invites everyone to his murder mystery party, things quickly get out of control when someone is kidnapped, and it’s unclear what’s part of the game and what’s reality.
Bateman and McAdams are outstanding, with some great physical performances, and they completely commit to the increasingly ludicrous situations. However, it’s perhaps Jesse Plemons who is the real highlight. As Gary Kingsbury, the odd police officer who feels excluded from the games, his deadpan delivery of some golden dialogue is a treat.
*Game Night* is only streaming on Netflix for a limited time, so I strongly urge you to watch it this week — you won’t regret it.

Stranger Things 5 trailer: Cast teases “next-level action’ and a “chaotic start” in the final season
The lights are flickering once again in Hawkins. Shadows crawl, memories linger, and the air crackles with the kind of electricity only Netflix’s most beloved world can summon. Netflix invites us back to the Upside Down as the trailer for **Stranger Things Season 5** drops.
### Stranger Things 5 Trailer: Cast Teases “Next-Level Action” and a “Chaotic Start” in the Final Season
Counting down to the final chapter, the cast, creators, and executive producers of *Stranger Things* set the stage for what’s to come and where we find our characters at the start of the season, as told to Tudum.
Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) says,
> “Eleven is in training mode. She’s in a warrior state, which is the first time you see Eleven like that at the beginning of a season. As for her mindset, all she is thinking about is protecting her friends. Her friends are her chosen family, so she will do whatever it takes to protect them and we’re going to see that.”
Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) adds,
> “Dustin is kind of in a bit of a funk. I think everybody probably is considering the state that Hawkins is in, and it’s getting a little bit harder for the gang to keep all the pieces together. We’re all dealing with the day-to-day issues of what it is to try to keep everybody safe and figure out where Vecna is, while having a lot of unpacked baggage from the events in the previous season.”
Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas) shares,
> “It’s always been in the beginning of a season that everything is all good, but this is the first season we come into it and the stakes are the same as where we left off. We haven’t defeated Vecna and the problem is still there. We’re still trying to figure it out and we may not be able to figure it out, so you feel that burden on Lucas as well as everyone else on the show. Everyone is on edge and we’re all just trying to keep hope alive.”
Noah Schnapp (Will) asserts,
> “Will is back in Hawkins this season. He was out of Hawkins for the last season, so now we’re seeing the effects of him being back in that realm. We kind of hit the ground running right away this season, which is really exciting and not how we’ve started any other season. Everyone is all in one place and we all have the same objective.”
Sadie Sink (Max) explains,
> “We [ended] Season 4 in a tough place for Max. Her final moments were her in a hospital bed. Eleven was searching for her in the void and couldn’t find her, so Max is definitely not the way she once was. There’s still a small glimmer of hope, though, and her friends are hanging on to that.”
Finn Wolfhard (Mike) says,
> “Mike is back in leadership mode, and he’s kind of taken it more upon himself to help plan out these missions, and he and the whole gang are devoted to finding Vecna and ending this.”
Ross Duffer (Co-Creator, Executive Producer, Writer, Director) shares,
> “I think what’s unique about this season is that it starts a little bit in chaos because our heroes ultimately lost at the end of Season 4. We usually set up their normal life and how they’re going about school, and then we introduce the supernatural element. But in this case, this season is sprinting from the start.”
Matt Duffer (Co-Creator, Executive Producer, Writer, Director) adds,
> “They’re not experiencing normal life. Nothing in Hawkins is normal anymore. Their movement is restricted, and there are Big Brother cameras everywhere. So not only are they active, their everyday, normal lives are anything but.”
Shawn Levy (Executive Producer & Director) concludes,
> “The action is next level, the visual effects are next level, but I’m also happy to say that the emotional center remains the same. And part of the magic of this show is that even as we evolve, even as the storytelling becomes more epic, it’s always anchored in these characters that we love.”

Netflix Update Is Great for Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth Movie but Not Knives Out 3
Following the theatrical success of *KPop Demon Hunters*’ sing-along version, Netflix and AMC Theatres are set to continue their collaboration by bringing more of the streamer’s original movies to cinemas.
In addition to the upcoming **Stranger Things** series finale, Netflix is reportedly planning a theatrical release for David Fincher’s *The Adventures of Cliff Booth*, with a much larger rollout than usual.
According to Variety, theatrical plans for Greta Gerwig’s *Narnia* movie and Fincher’s Brad Pitt-led spin-off of Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 dramedy have yet to be finalized. Both films are slated to debut in 2026. Besides its previously announced two-week exclusive IMAX run, there’s a chance that Gerwig’s highly anticipated fantasy movie might also be released on more theater screens beyond IMAX.
### Why Won’t Netflix’s *Knives Out 3* Receive a Wider Theatrical Release?
Despite Netflix’s new partnership with AMC, not all upcoming major Netflix movies will benefit from this deal. Variety confirmed that Rian Johnson’s *Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery* will not receive a wider theatrical release “because plans couldn’t come together for a larger rollout.”
However, the Daniel Craig-led *Knives Out 3* is still scheduled to open in select theaters on November 26 to ensure it qualifies for awards season consideration.
*Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery* is once again written and directed by Rian Johnson. For his work on 2022’s *Glass Onion*, Johnson earned an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Joining Daniel Craig is a brand new ensemble cast featuring Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.

Netflix shares slide on rare earnings miss — snapping six-quarter profit streak
Netflix Misses Earnings Target, Cites Brazilian Tax Dispute as Cause
Netflix missed the earnings target set by stock market analysts during its latest quarter, marking a break in the company’s six-quarter streak of posting profits that exceeded expectations. The Los Gatos, Calif.-based streaming giant attributed the earnings shortfall to an unexpected $619 million expense related to a tax dispute in Brazil.
Despite this setback, Netflix highlighted its strong lineup of distinctive TV series and films, which have kept its audience engaged. The company also noted a successful combination of subscriber fees and increased ad sales that helped deliver revenue in line with analyst forecasts.
Investors, however, were not entirely reassured by the explanation. Following the earnings announcement on Tuesday, Netflix’s shares fell approximately 6% in extended trading.
Diverging Analyst Opinions
Analyst reactions to Netflix’s third-quarter report were mixed. Thomas Monteiro, an analyst at Investing.com, expressed concern that Netflix might be using the Brazilian tax hit to mask underlying signs of slowing subscriber growth and advertising revenue amid economic uncertainty. “The truth is that the company failed to deliver the kind of growth we’ve grown used to over the past couple of years,” he said.
Conversely, Jeremy Mullin of Zacks took a more optimistic view, stating that Netflix’s “underlying story remains solid” and sees little cause for concern.
Financial Highlights
In the July-September quarter, Netflix earned $2.5 billion, or $5.87 per share, representing an 8% increase from the same period last year. Revenue rose 17% year-over-year to $11.5 billion.
Analysts surveyed by FactSet Research had expected Netflix to earn $6.96 per share on revenue of $11.5 billion. While the company matched revenue estimates, it fell short on earnings per share, primarily due to the Brazilian tax expense.
A Shift in Focus
Netflix has increasingly emphasized delivering solid financial growth over quarterly subscriber gains. As part of this strategic shift, the company stopped disclosing its subscriber numbers at the end of last year. This change has so far been effective, with Netflix’s stock price rising approximately 40% this year—though the dip in extended trading following the earnings release suggests some of those gains may be at risk.
Subscriber Growth and Market Position
Although Netflix no longer reports specific subscriber data, this year’s revenue growth suggests its worldwide subscriber base has increased from roughly 302 million at the end of last year, maintaining the company’s lead among video streamers. This is notable even as well-funded rivals such as Amazon and Apple continue expanding their programming selections.
In the company’s quarterly conference call, co-CEO Ted Sarandos revealed that Netflix’s total worldwide audience—including multiple viewers within the same subscriber household—is approaching 1 billion.
“We have a better understanding of the streaming business than any of our competitors,” asserted Greg Peters, Netflix’s other co-CEO, during the call.
Diversification Efforts
Netflix has sustained its market leadership by diversifying its offerings, adding live sports and video games alongside its extensive scripted programming. The company plans to expand this diversification further by introducing video podcasts in partnership with Spotify next year.
As the streaming landscape evolves, Netflix’s strategy focuses on broadening its content portfolio to maintain user engagement and drive continued growth.
