NCAA won’t allow athletes or athletic department staff to bet on pro sports after gambling scandals hit NBA and college teams

The move follows a string of high-profile gambling cases that have raised questions about the integrity of competition in college and pro sports. In late October, an NBA coach and player were arrested in a takedown of two sprawling gambling operations, and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was accused of exploiting private information about players to win bets on NBA games. The NCAA announced two weeks ago that it was revoking the eligibility of six men’s basketball players over allegations of sports betting. And on Friday, the NCAA said former Temple guard Hysier Miller placed dozens of bets on Owls games, including some against his team. The rule change to allow gambling on pro sports would have taken effect on Nov. 1, but under a rarely used rule, each Division I school was given 30 days to vote to rescind the proposal, since it was adopted by less than 75% of the DI cabinet. More than two-thirds of DI members needed to vote to stop the rule change, and that number was reached on Friday. The 30-day period would have ended Saturday. Even if the rule had passed, athletes and athletic department staff would have continued to be banned from any betting on NCAA events. The vote by DI members also applies to Divisions II and III, which had also been poised to allow gambling on pro sports. Such bets will continue to be banned at all three levels. Late last month, Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey sent a note to NCAA President Charlie Baker expressing concerns about the rule change. The two members of the DI cabinet from the SEC had voted in favor of allowing pro sports betting. NCAA enforcement caseloads involving sports betting violations have increased in recent years. There are at least another dozen cases currently being investigated.

Netherlands set to return 3,500-year-old stolen sculpture to Egypt

**Netherlands to Return 3,500-Year-Old Sculpture to Egypt Following Grand Egyptian Museum Opening**

Cairo – The Prime Minister of the Netherlands announced on Sunday that the European nation will soon return a 3,500-year-old sculpture to Egypt. This announcement came just a day after he attended the lavish opening ceremony of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza.

Prime Minister Dick Schoof stated that during a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, he informed his counterpart about the upcoming return of a bust belonging to a high-ranking official from the dynasty of Pharaoh Thutmose III.

The piece was discovered for sale at an art fair in 2022 and was subsequently confiscated after Dutch authorities received an anonymous tip regarding its illegal origin. According to a statement from the Dutch government, the art dealer “voluntarily renounced the sculpture.” After investigation, Dutch police and officials confirmed that the bust was obtained through looting and unlawfully exported.

The sculpture is expected to be handed over to the Egyptian ambassador to the Netherlands by the end of this year. This will mark the first artifact returned to Egypt since the grand opening of the GEM.

Several campaigns have sought the repatriation of looted Egyptian antiquities ahead of the museum’s opening. Egypt’s government hosted dozens of foreign leaders and dignitaries on Saturday for the official launch of the new museum—a $1 billion project decades in the making.

Nevine El-Aref, media adviser to the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, told CBS News on Saturday, “It is a great day for Egypt and for humanity. This is Egypt’s gift to the world. It’s a dream come true. After all these years, the GEM is finally and officially open.”

The Grand Egyptian Museum is one of the largest museums in the world and the largest dedicated to a single civilization: ancient Egypt. Its exhibits span some 7,000 years, from prehistory to the end of the Greek and Roman eras around 400 A.D.

Egyptian officials hope the new museum will significantly boost the country’s tourism industry and stimulate the still-struggling economy. They predict the GEM will attract approximately 5 million visitors annually.

Beed: 72-year-old killed over property dispute, six of his family held

He died after being attacked on Saturday evening with a sickle and iron rods by his three nephews and their wives, an official from the Ambhora police station said.

“The family members had been embroiled in a boundary wall and pipeline dispute for several days. One such argument ended in a fatal attack on Devkar. He sustained serious injuries in the incident,” the official added. Devkar was rushed to the hospital in Ahilyanagar on Sunday afternoon, where he later died. His son was also assaulted during the attack. “The matter is further being investigated,” the official said, according to PTI.

The police have registered a case and arrested six people in connection with the incident. Those arrested were identified as Ramdas Devkar, Rahul Devkar, and Santosh Devkar, along with their wives Kavita Devkar, Manisha Devkar, and Lata Devkar, the news agency reported.

Meanwhile, in another incident, a 36-year-old farmer was reportedly mauled to death by a leopard in a village in Beed district, police officials said on Monday, according to PTI.

The attack occurred in the Bavi-Darewadi area of Ashti tehsil on Sunday when the victim had taken his cattle out for grazing. Rajendra Vishwanath Golhar, a resident of Bavi village, went to his farm in the morning to graze his cattle but failed to return home, an official said.

Suspecting a leopard attack, villagers alerted the forest department and local authorities, who launched a search operation. Golhar’s half-eaten body was found in the fields, confirming that he was attacked by a leopard, Range Forest Officer Amol Munde stated. The post-mortem report is awaited.

In response, police and forest authorities have urged residents to avoid venturing out alone after dark. They have also initiated measures to increase patrolling and awareness campaigns across nearly 15 surrounding villages.
