Nepalis rescued from Maynmar scam centers return home
Kathmandu, Nov 20: The Nepali Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, rescued 37 Nepalis who had fled to Thailand after a raid by Myanmar security forces and brought them back home. Lured by the promise of attractive jobs, these individuals had traveled to Myanmar through various channels and were forced to work in illegally operated online scam centers, engaging in online betting, online casinos, gaming and phishing, cryptocurrency fraud, and similar activities. On Kartik 2, Myanmar security forces raided one of these scam centers, prompting the 37 Nepalis working there to escape and enter Thailand. The embassy also stated that efforts are underway, in coordination with the relevant authorities in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Thailand, to bring back another 23 Nepalis in Myawaddy, two in Mae Sot, Thailand, and four in Cambodia as soon as possible. The statement urged that, in line with government regulations, Nepalis should only go abroad for employment after obtaining proper labor approval and should not be tempted by promises of quick and large earnings in countries like Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand under the pretext of foreign employment. Driver dies, dog survives after vehicle goes over side of Santa Cruz Wharf in high surf
A dramatic scene unfolded at the Santa Cruz Wharf over the weekend when a vehicle went off the edge of the pier and into the water, sparking a frantic rescue effort that ended with authorities recovering a body and a dog.
Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle break through the wooden railing at 9:44 a.m. on Sunday. When firefighters arrived, they found the damaged section about two-thirds of the way along the wharf.
Visibility was limited, and the surf was high, with waves about 12 feet tall, making it difficult to immediately locate the vehicle, officials said. After about 10 minutes, the vehicle was spotted resting on its roof in approximately 30 feet of water, according to Santa Cruz Fire Department Battalion Chief Josh Coleman at a news conference on Sunday.
“The victim was brought out of a vehicle, upside down, at the bottom of the ocean floor, with significant swelling, in 33 minutes,” Coleman said.
The victim was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. A dog was also pulled from the water and survived, officials confirmed.
The emergency response involved 13 lifeguards, two jet skis, and two boats. Emergency divers remained in the water for about an hour, searching for any additional passengers in the vehicle, but none were found, authorities reported.
At this time, authorities have not provided details about the cause of the incident or estimated how fast the vehicle was traveling before it went off the edge of the wharf. The incident remains under investigation by the Santa Cruz Police Department.

Deadly Tick-Borne Virus Detected in Tokyo Dog for First Time
Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) is primarily spread through tick bites and can cause symptoms such as fever, coughing, and vomiting in both humans and animals. In severe cases, the illness can be fatal.
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, a pet dog in the city developed symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea last month. Upon examination, the owner found a tick attached to the dog’s body. Subsequent testing confirmed the dog was infected with SFTS.
Tragically, the dog passed away on September 27. Authorities noted that the animal had pre-existing health conditions, and it remains unclear whether SFTS was the direct cause of death.
Until now, only two confirmed cases of human SFTS infection had been reported in Tokyo. This latest case marks the first detection of SFTS in an animal within the city.
In response, the metropolitan government is urging residents to take precautions when outdoors. Recommended measures include using tick repellents and carefully checking both themselves and their pets to avoid tick bites. Staying vigilant can help prevent the spread of SFTS and protect public health.
