CHICAGO (WLS) — The recent murder of a Loyola college student has created a new friction point between federal officials and states, like Illinois, with sanctuary policies after the Department of Homeland Security revealed the alleged gunmen was in the country illegally with a previous warrant for his arrest. College freshman Sheridan Gorman, 18, was killed last Thursday when she and a group of friends walked to the pier at Tobey Prinz Beach, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights, the family’s attorney said. ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch But the night took a tragic turn when prosecutor say 25-year-old Jose Medina of Venezuela fired a gunshot at Gorman, killing her. Chicago police arrested Medina the day after on charges, including a first-degree murder charge, after utilizing facial recognition software to compare images from surveillance footage to U. S. Customs and Border Protection records. In an arrest report, CPD investigators said the images matched Medina. Court records show an arrest warrant was issued for Medina in 2023 after he stopped appearing in court on shoplifting charges. Federal officials say Medina is an undocumented Venezuelan national, and that he should have never been released after that 2023 arrest. Over the weekend, DHS officials announced Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has “lodged an arrest detainer” asking state officials to not release Medina. SEE ALSO | Prosecutors reveal new details about Loyola student’s killing, suspect’s criminal history President Donald Trump remarked on the killing, calling it “devastating. These people were let in by [ President ] Biden,” President Trump said. “We’re getting them out; we’re getting them out fast. That’s why ICE is so important. They’re doing such a good job.” ABC7 Chief Legal Analyst Gil Soffer says the debate over the Illinois TRUST Act, which prohibits state and local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration officials, creates yet another flash point between federal immigration goals and the state’s welcoming policy towards migrants. “It wouldn’t make sense for the feds to insist on a handover from the state for deportation purposes,” Soffer said. “Now, if he committed murder, there’s a very strong interest on the part of the state, and you would think on the part of the feds, to see that he’s prosecuted here.” State law prohibits county jails from honoring immigration detainers, or requests by immigration officials to be notified if an undocumented person is being released from state custody. Soffer telling the I-Team despite the Department of Homeland Security’s outcry, and calls from Gorman’s parents to keep Medina in custody, that’s very likely where he will stay given the state murder charge changes everything. “He will almost certainly be detained on those state charges, regardless of what ICE intends to do or not intends to do,” Soffer said. “They can’t honor the detainer if that’s all that there is to keep this guy in custody. But that’s not all that there is to keep him in custody, there’s a murder charge to keep him in custody.” Soffer underscoring it is likely Medina will face deportation proceedings, but at the end of a very long legal process as the murder and other serious charges against him play out in court. Prosecutors revealed on Monday Medina is currently detained at Illinois Masonic Medical Center undergoing treatment for tuberculosis. A Monday detention hearing was continued to Friday, March 27.

Epstein files fallout takes down elite figures in Europe, while U.S. reckoning is muted
The contrast is striking: In Europe, some people whose names come up in the Epstein files are facing consequences but in the U. S., not so much. European royals, government officials, politicians and others are losing jobs and titles over their connection to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. European law enforcement agencies are opening investigations based on recent troves of documents released by the U. S. government. Prominent Americans with apparent ties to Jeffrey Epstein including President Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick- have so far largely kept their positions of power. Epstein also associated with Democratic politicians and academics, including former President Bill Clinton. While appearing in the Epstein files is not necessarily proof of wrongdoing, for Europeans, it’s been “very humiliating” to see their “rich and famous hobnobbing” with Epstein, “a fake American billionaire” and convicted sex trafficker of minors, said Richard Painter, a professor at the University of Minnesota Law School who served as the chief ethics lawyer to President George W. Bush. But in the U. S., Painter says, the connection between money and politics can shield some of those named in the files. “You’ve got all this massive amount of money in politics. So the billionaire class is definitely going to want to be protected,” he said. Neither the White House nor the Department of Commerce have responded to a request for comment. In the United Kingdom, former Prince Andrew was stripped of his royal titles and forced to move out of the royal estate. That was over claims that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, as he is now known, had sex with teenage girls which he has denied during his visits with Epstein. Now, with the latest release of files, the former prince faces an investigation by British police over claims he shared confidential trade information with Epstein in 2010. King Charles III, Mountbatten-Windsor’s brother, is “ready to support” investigators, Buckingham Palace said in a statement sent to news outlets this week. Others in the U. K. have faced consequences, not for allegations of sexual misconduct, but for being too friendly with Epstein. Peter Mandelson, a prominent Labour Party figure and Britain’s ambassador to the U. S., was stripped of his position in September and resigned from the House of Lords earlier this month. He now faces a criminal investigation after new files suggest he received payments from Epstein and shared government documents. For a while, Prime Minister Keir Starmer faced calls to step down over his continued support for Mandelson. Starmer, earlier this month, apologized to Epstein’s victims. “None of us knew the depth and darkness of that relationship,” he said of Mandelson’s ties to Epstein. In countries such as Britain with a parliamentary system, leaders are more vulnerable to calls to resign from political opponents or even members of their own party, Painter noted, than leaders in the United States. “Ultimately the Parliament, the legislature, calls the shots and then the members of the legislature are vulnerable to be voted down in the next election,” he said. “There’s more accountability to the public.” Trump is somewhat insulated from political pressure President Trump was a longtime friend of Epstein’s and appears frequently in the released documents from the late financier’s estate. Trump and the White House have both consistently denied any wrongdoing. Still, because he is in his second term and is constitutionally prohibited from running for reelection, he is shielded from some accountability, according to Painter. Lutnick, Trump’s billionaire commerce secretary, previously had said he had “very limited interactions” with Epstein, a New York City neighbor after visiting his townhouse in 2005. But this week, at a Senate hearing, he acknowledged that he and his family traveled to Epstein’s private island in 2012. Painter also criticized Attorney General Pam Bondi for “selectively” releasing parts of the Epstein files, despite bipartisan legislation passed by Congress which orders a full release of the documents. In her opening remarks at a contentious House Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, Bondi said she was “deeply sorry for what any victim” had gone through, but she avoided apologizing directly to several of Epstein’s victims in the committee room. Painter questioned whether the administration is releasing files that only implicate Democrats while shielding Republicans. Epstein knew Trump, a neighbor in Palm Beach, but Trump says they had a falling out before Epstein’s conviction for sex trafficking. A few Americans have lost positions of power. Larry Summers, a former Treasury Secretary during the Clinton administration and chief economic adviser to President Obama, stepped away from his teaching position at Harvard. Brad Karp resigned as chair of the prestigious law firm Paul Weiss. And Kathryn Ruemmler, top lawyer at Goldman Sachs, announced that she’ll resign from her job at the end of June. Consequences spread across Europe France’s former culture minister, Jack Lang, resigned as head of a Paris cultural center after the French Foreign Ministry sought to question him about his ties to Epstein. Former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland, this week was charged with “gross corruption” by police there and could face up to 10 years in prison after emails showed he stayed in Epstein’s homes in New York and Florida and visited Epstein’s private island in the Caribbean. Also this month, Mona Juul resigned as Norway’s ambassador to Jordan, after revelations that Epstein left $10 million in his will to her children. The Epstein scandal has also hit the country’s royal family. Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit, the wife of Crown Prince Haakon, apologized after documents showed she vacationed in an Epstein property in Palm Beach.

SW Miami-Dade priest arrested after confrontation with woman donating to church turns violent, authorities say
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) A 72-year-old Southwest Miami-Dade priest was arrested after a confrontation with a woman dropping off donations at a church escalated into a physical struggle, according to authorities. Jesus Gabriel Saldana was charged with burglary of an occupied conveyance, battery on a person 65 or older and misdemeanor criminal mischief following the Nov. 6 incident at St. Kevin Catholic Church on Southwest 42nd Street. Police said the victim arrived at the church around 11: 40 a. m. to donate items and attempted to photograph the donations alongside a politically themed poster. According to the arrest report, Saldana, identified as the church priest collecting donations, told her she was not allowed to take pictures and ordered her to leave. When she asked for her donations back, a verbal argument ensued, authorities said. According to authorities, the victim began photographing Saldana, prompting him to lunge at her. Bystanders separated the two, but Saldana then allegedly reached into the woman’s vehicle without permission for unknown reasons. The struggle continued as the victim got into the driver’s seat, and police say Saldana battered her while attempting to pull her out of the vehicle. During the altercation, he allegedly ripped off the rearview mirror and damaged the vehicle’s gear selector. Investigators said the woman, who has a history of cardiac issues, later drove herself to a hospital, where she was admitted. Saldana also reached into her vehicle again and dumped out her purse on the ground while searching for her phone, the report states. Saldana turned himself in at the Miami-Dade Police Midwest District Station on Saturday. He was arrested and taken to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Copyright.

Anna Kepner and Her 16-Year-Old Stepbrother Were Like ‘2 Peas in a Pod,’ According to Grandmother
The grandparents of Anna Kepner, the 18-year-old cheerleader found dead aboard a cruise while on a family holiday, say that the teen was very close with her 16-year-old stepbrother, who is now a possible suspect in the case. The 16-year-old boy has not been named a suspect by the FBI, which previously confirmed to PEOPLE it is investigating the case. Kepner, of Titusville, Fla., was found dead on the Carnival Horizon cruise ship on Nov. 8 by a member of the ship’s housekeeping staff. No suspects have been publicly named. However, in court filings related to a custody dispute, Kepner’s stepmother Shauntel Hudson claimed that investigators say her 16-year-old son Kepner’s stepbrother may be subject to a criminal case following the teen’s death. (Shauntel’s last name is listed as “Kepner” in several media reports, but court documents identify her as Shauntel Hudson.) Shauntel Hudson’s ex-husband who is the 16-year-old’s biological father also said in a petition filed with Brevard County that the teen is a “suspect in the death of the step child during the cruise,” according to the filing obtained by PEOPLE. The attention on the stepbrother, however, appears to have caught the Kepner family by surprise. Kepner’s grandmother, Barbara Kepner, told ABC News in an exclusive interview that the family was close-knit especially Anna and her 16-year-old stepbrother. “They were just like brother and sister,” Barbara said, adding that they were “two peas in a pod,” “I know that those two kids cared about each other in the right way,” Barbara said, while declining to comment about the scrutiny on Anna’s stepbrother. Anna is being remembered for being a “thoughtful” and “nurturing” member of the family who took special care of her siblings, “taking them to the park, Halloween Horror Nights, or just out for fun,” her loved ones said in an online obituary. “She had a big, beautiful heart, often sending random ‘I love you’ messages or little gestures that made someone’s day,” read part of the obituary. Stepbrother of teen who died on cruise ‘does not remember’ what happened, teen’s grandmother says Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage?
