Pullman neighborhood groups stepping up as government shutdown casts shadow on Park Service facilities

As visitors descended upon the Pullman neighborhood to delight in the vintage lavish homes that threw open their doors last weekend for the Historic Pullman House Tour, a few notable structures remained closed due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, now well into its third week.

One favorite site, the Administration Clock Tower Building in Pullman National Historical Park, remained closed as the park’s seven rangers, who typically staff the site and offer tours and other programming, were furloughed.

Organizers of the 52nd annual Historic Pullman House Tour, held on October 10 and 11, reported a roughly 30% decrease in ticket sales. They speculated this drop was a direct result of the shutdown and the park closure, with potential visitors possibly assuming the event had been canceled.

“Everyone sees there’s a closed sign across the street,” said Lynn McClure, vice president of the Historic Pullman Foundation. “We have no rangers.”

McClure noted the closures had a significant impact on the neighborhood, its residents, and visitors alike. “Traditionally, national parks have been the first place many people experience the shutdown as a personal impact,” she said. “It’s personal.”

The timing of the shutdown is particularly unfortunate, McClure added. “This is the fall, when schools start setting up programs and tours with educational components,” she explained, while helping out at the recent House Tour. “This is high travel season.”

To help mitigate the effects of the shutdown, the Historic Pullman Foundation has been stepping in to fill gaps. They are assisting with some school tours after being informed by the Park Service which schools had already signed up.

As a “National Park friends group” with official partnership status, the Foundation sees this as a vital way to support Pullman National Historical Park and its mission. “So when something like the government shutdown happens, we have to spring into action, and we’re doing what we can,” McClure said.

More visitors are expected in Pullman on Saturday when several buildings are featured in Chicago Architecture Foundation’s Open House Chicago 2025. Participating sites include the Historic Pullman Foundation headquarters at 614 E. 113th St., Greater Tabernacle Cathedral at 11300 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., Pullman Artspace Lofts at 11137 S. Langley Ave., and Pullman Tech Workshop at 11314 S. Front Ave.

However, similar to last weekend’s home tour, the visitor center inside the Clock Tower—operated by the National Park Service—will remain closed during Open House Chicago, according to Alfonso Quiroz of the Historic Pullman Foundation.

“However, the rest of the Pullman National Historical Park will be open, including the grounds around the Clock Tower (operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources), as well as the Exhibit Hall and the Florence Lowden Miller Center, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Collections will be on display throughout the day,” he said.

Despite the decreased attendance last weekend, the Historic Pullman House Tour was still a hit among Pullman fans. The tour started at the Historic Pullman Exhibit Hall and included visits to eight homes, a home under restoration, and the Block House Gallery—with its homes, gallery, classrooms, community areas, and storage spaces. The tour also featured the historic Greenstone Church and the George M. Pullman School.

Additional highlights included live jazz performances, a classic car show, and food options. Visitors could also stop by the Pullman House Project Welcome Center, located inside the former home of Henry Sessions, the first general superintendent of the Pullman Palace Car Company. The house was later used as a social club for Pullman executives and as the Pullman Club Coffee Shop.

Cindy McMahon, co-chair of the House Tour, mentioned that even before the shutdown, rangers’ hours had been reduced in May. To help compensate for these cutbacks, the Exhibit Hall extended its hours to be open to the public Thursday through Sunday.

“We did have a lot of people call to see if the House Tour was still going to take place,” said McMahon, whose home was showcased on the tour. “People can still come and visit the partner sites and still get a Pullman experience, and hopefully they’ll return when the park is open.”

Alongside the Historic Pullman Foundation, other neighborhood organizations such as the Pullman House Project are stepping up to support visitors.

“We’re here to give everyone who comes to Pullman a good visitor experience,” McMahon emphasized.

Nancy Johnson, a Pullman resident of 12 years who volunteered during the tour, expressed her love of the area’s history, architecture, and friendly neighbors.

“There’s a lot of misinformation; people think Pullman is closed altogether,” Johnson said. “People show up baffled.”

Illnesses at Hawaii schools potentially linked to milk rise to 15

As of Thursday morning, the state Department of Health (DOH) has received reports of approximately 15 individuals experiencing gastrointestinal illness potentially linked to the recently recalled Meadow Gold chocolate milk. Most cases involve mild symptoms, including stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting. This marks an increase from Wednesday, when nine illnesses had been reported.

The reported illnesses have affected four school facilities on Oahu. Additionally, two more schools—one on Maui and another on Oahu—have reported product quality issues but no confirmed illnesses at this time.

Health officials emphasize that the investigation is ongoing, and the numbers may change as more information becomes available. Currently, no confirmed link has been established between the recalled milk and the reported illnesses. Laboratory testing of milk samples, including checks for bacterial toxins, is underway.

Preliminary inspections at the affected schools have not identified any food safety violations. The investigation began after Meadow Gold Dairy voluntarily recalled about 70,000 half-pint cartons of chocolate milk with an October 16 expiration date.

This milk, made and packaged out of state, was distributed on September 29 to nearly 200 schools and institutions across Oahu, Maui, and Kauai. The recall was issued due to “potential quality control issues,” according to a DOH news release on Tuesday night.

DOH officials have also confirmed reports that some of the milk had an unusually thick texture, resembling chocolate pudding. Meadow Gold officials stated that the company is coordinating with the Health Department and the state Department of Education to collect and replace the affected products.

Residents are urged to call the DOH Disease Reporting Line at (808) 586-4586 if they or their child experience symptoms after drinking the recalled milk. Those experiencing severe or concerning symptoms should seek medical care immediately.

Officials also advise consumers not to drink Meadow Gold chocolate milk marked “OCT 16” and to discard any product that looks, smells, or tastes unusual.

More damage found on Route 109 bridge, MassDOT hopes to reopen by end of weekend

SAUGUS, MASS. (WHDH) – Traffic troubles continue for drivers using the Route 107 bridge between Lynn and Saugus, as inspectors have uncovered more damage to the temporary structure.

Officials announced on Wednesday that the bridge would be closed until further notice after cracks were found in several deck panels. Further investigations on Thursday revealed additional concerns, leading to the decision that emergency repairs are needed before the bridge can safely reopen.

“Knowing the integrity of the bridge isn’t there, that’s the scary part, really,” said Gerson Argueta, owner of Ken’s Car Care Center located near the bridge. “Anyone coming into Lynn, Saugus, or Salem, this is the only route we have. Now with this closed, it’s causing a big jam here on this side.”

Officials indicated on Thursday that emergency repairs could take several more days. One driver told 7NEWS that their usual six-minute drive home took more than an hour due to all the detours.

MassDOT stated that their goal is to have the bridge back open to traffic by the end of the weekend.

No Kings, no boundaries, no America

Fourteen years after Occupy Wall Street and five years after the George Floyd riots, the Democratic Party has embraced the tactics of the mob. Anyone who hoped the party would retreat from extremism was wrong. The movement calling itself No Kings has returned, proving the point.

What began as a slogan of defiance now serves as the organizing banner for a political faction that thrives on confrontation, violence, and plausible deniability. The republic cannot survive a ruling class that excuses its own mobs.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk could have been a moment of national reflection—a chance for Democrats to reconsider their indulgence in rhetoric that blurs the line between protest and terrorism. Instead, the party apparatus has chosen escalation. When you tell unstable people that Trump is a “fascist,” that dissent is violence, and that opposition equals Nazism, don’t be shocked when someone acts on it.

### The Logic of the Left

To understand how this happened, you must understand how the modern left thinks. Progressives treat speech as violence and dissent as an existential threat. Anyone who refuses to affirm their ideology becomes, by definition, an oppressor. From that premise, violence becomes “self-defense.”

If Trump is Hitler, then violence against him or anyone aligned with his cause is not just justified but virtuous. The left’s revolutionaries no longer storm palaces. They dominate the streets.

On October 18, No Kings protests will erupt again across the country. What was once the fringe tactic of radicals has become the preferred strategy of the Democratic Party: organized street action modeled on unstable regimes abroad.

This backslide into mob politics raises tensions at a time when the nation needs prudence. Instead, Democrats seem eager to test how far their own movement will go.

### What Lies Beneath the No Kings Network

After the June 14 protests, our team at the Oversight Project traced the movement’s primary organizing partner, 50501. What we found confirmed the worst suspicions: demonstrable ties to the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the Democratic Socialists of America, Antifa, and Students for Justice in Palestine.

These groups have openly supported violent action or defended authoritarian regimes, including China’s Communist Party. Mapping their social media connections revealed links to foreign influence networks tied to Chinese propaganda operations.

Antifa affiliates have also joined the effort, circulating merchandise celebrating Charlie Kirk’s death—shirts reading “Nazi Lives Don’t Matter” and “Normalize Political Violence” printed with a guillotine. This is the energy behind No Kings.

Its rhetoric echoes the Chinese Communist Party’s talking points on Tiananmen Square and defends regimes that crush dissent. Some of its alumni have even celebrated the murder of Israeli diplomats. Others maintain direct connections to Neville Singham and Chinese consulate officials.

For years, Democrats obsessed over alleged Russian meddling in U.S. politics. Yet now they embrace networks steeped in foreign influence to advance their own protest movements. As the Trump administration maps these organizations, many roads will lead overseas.

Beijing has long used this method—stoking domestic unrest to weaken rivals from within. The question isn’t whether the Democrats know this. It’s whether they care.

### How the Extremists Captured the Party

So how did a movement this toxic gain institutional cover from the Democratic establishment? Why do party leaders like Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) offer it full-throated support? And why do former Republicans like George Conway, Bill Kristol, and Joe Walsh lend their credibility to the cause?

Because the Democrats have surrendered to their radical base. They’ve stopped trying to lead it and started following it. Rather than condemn political extremism, they seek to normalize and rebrand it.

When Antifa militants show up at Democrat-aligned protests, party leaders feign surprise. When violence erupts, they retreat to the safety of “plausible deniability.” It’s a tired act, and the public no longer buys it.

**RELATED:** Trump names Antifa. The establishment still pretends it doesn’t exist.

Trump’s National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 directs a whole-of-government response to domestic extremism. Through the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces, federal agencies already possess the tools to investigate, expose, and dismantle these networks.

The real question is whether they will use them. A serious enforcement effort would strip away the Democrats’ mask of deniability and expose the institutional support behind the violence. It would show that what poses as activism is, in fact, the operational arm of a radicalized political movement.

### The Choice Ahead

Across the world, major parties have flirted with revolutionary tactics when democracy failed to deliver their goals. It’s the oldest temptation in politics. But America is now watching a mainstream party openly indulge in it.

Street action, foreign influence, and mob intimidation are not signs of progress—they are symptoms of decay. If Democrats continue down this path, they will drag the country with them.

The republic cannot survive a ruling class that excuses its own mobs.

Climate denialists can’t ignore this evidence

The sun rises amid high temperatures in Mexico City on May 23, 2024. Extreme heat across Mexico, Central America, and parts of the U.S. South has left millions sweltering, strained energy grids, and even caused iconic Howler monkeys in Mexico to drop dead from trees.

Every now and then, a piece of evidence emerges that cuts through the noise and changes minds. Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at Berkeley Earth, recently produced a stark illustration of how quickly our planet is heating due to greenhouse gases emitted by humans.

In his Substack newsletter, *The Climate Brink*, Hausfather published a chart breaking down the percentage of the world’s land that has experienced its hottest month on record in each decade since the 1870s. The data reveals that very little of Earth’s land surface experienced such temperature records before the 20th century. In contrast:

– Roughly 78% of land set new temperature records in the 21st century.
– 38% of land has already set records in the 2020s — despite the decade being only halfway over.

Put simply, the world is getting hotter, and fast.

This pairs well with another eye-opening chart from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which shows the change in average global surface temperature over the past 145 years. The temperature has risen more or less steadily over the past five decades, recently hitting 1.3 degrees Celsius (about 2.3 degrees Fahrenheit) above the 1951-1980 average.

We are now dangerously close to the stretch goal of the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to limit heating to 1.5°C above pre-industrial averages — roughly corresponding to the NASA baseline.

These compelling graphics directly refute at least two major talking points used by climate-change deniers to delay action and perpetuate fossil fuel dependency.

### Debunking Myths

**Myth 1: Climate Change Is a “Greatest Con Job”**

Former President Donald Trump, often regarded as a major climate denier, stated at the United Nations:

> “If you look back years ago, in the 1920s and the 1930s, they said, ‘Global cooling will kill the world. We have to do something.’ Then they said global warming will kill the world, but then it started getting cooler. So now they just call it climate change because that way they can’t miss. Climate change because if it goes higher or lower, whatever the hell happens, there’s climate change. It’s the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world, in my opinion.”

As the charts clearly demonstrate, while the world may have cooled for some decades after the 1930s, the long-term trend since the 1970s is a steady increase in temperature. In fact, the past 100 years have been the hottest in recorded human history.

Adding to this, a striking chart published in 2023 by Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist at Texas A&M University and co-author with Hausfather at *The Climate Brink*, tracks global temperatures since the last ice age—and projects thousands of years into the future. It illustrates how we are reversing centuries of planetary cooling in the blink of a geological eye. Achieving such a rapid shift requires an unprecedented surge in carbon dioxide emissions, a feat accomplished by human activity.

**Myth 2: The World Was Hotter in the 1930s**

Trump’s Department of Energy recently released a 141-page report attempting to rebut established climate science, suggesting the world was hotter in the 1930s than today. This claim has widely been criticized and debunked.

It is true that the US experienced exceptional heat during the Dust Bowl decade, with heat-wave intensity in the lower 48 states at its highest on record according to Environmental Protection Agency data. Hausfather’s chart shows that about 3% of 1930s temperature records still stand, including some parts of the US.

However, this was a localized anomaly, not a global trend. The Dust Bowl conditions resulted from a combination of bad farming practices that stripped land cover, intensifying drought and heat, compounded by a prolonged spike in ocean temperatures. This “perfect storm” generated excess heat that even reached Europe.

Meanwhile, much of the rest of the world remained relatively cool. The localized heat receded once ocean temperatures dropped and land management improved. Now, the heat is back—not only in the US but globally—as a direct consequence of humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions.

At our current rate, the Dust Bowl era will soon appear as a comparatively cool interlude.

### The Takeaway

Climate change is a global trend, not a localized event or a “con job.” Cherry-picking data to deny this reality is a tactic designed to distract from the urgent work needed to mitigate warming.

Sharing charts like these is just the beginning. Stay informed and connected — understanding the facts equips us to push for meaningful action.
