Cold Clash coming soon

A strong cold front is approaching South Florida, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures on Tuesday—especially later in the day after sunset. This chilly change will likely be a shock to the system since we’ve had limited cold air so far this season.

Typically, late December nights and mornings in our area cool back to the lower 60s on average. After this winter front passes, however, we’re expecting lows to plunge into the 40s and 50s for the rest of the week! The coldest conditions will arrive just in time for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Is Mother Nature giving us the cold shoulder to start 2026? It will certainly feel that way! Even with bright sunshine, afternoon highs in South Florida will struggle to climb beyond the upper 60s on Thursday (New Year’s Day).

If you’re heading out to celebrate the holiday, be sure to bundle up—it will feel brisk by South Florida standards. This cold wave will be in place from Tuesday night through Friday night.

A return to milder weather is expected over the upcoming weekend. Starting midday Saturday, you should notice more comfortable temperatures as the winds shift and warmer air moves back in.

Sweetwater Police announce enhanced security measures at Dolphin Mall ahead of holiday shopping season

SWEETWATER, FLA. (WSVN) — With the holiday shopping season approaching, Sweetwater Police announced they’re increasing security around Dolphin Mall to prevent any Grinches from ruining Christmas.

“My officers are ready,” said Sweetwater Police Chief Sergio Diaz.

The department kicked off what they’re calling “Operation Safe Holiday” at Dolphin Mall with a stern warning to potential criminals looking to snatch items off store shelves.

“The City of Sweetwater has zero tolerance, I repeat, zero tolerance,” said Diaz.

The operation will include ramped-up safety measures, such as increased usage of drones, cameras, motorcycles, and an overall greater presence of officers across the city for the next seven weeks.

“We have officers in patrol cars. We have officers undercover, both inside and outside the mall,” Diaz added.

While this is the third year the department has executed this operation at Dolphin Mall, this year is different as officers unveiled a new state-of-the-art mobile command center. The large truck will serve as a central hub for coordination, surveillance, and rapid response by authorities.

The chief credited past holiday security measures for a decrease in overall crime in the city.

“Citywide, our crime went down last year by 34%. The added police presence during the holidays is what makes a difference,” said Diaz.

Chief Diaz also had sound advice for shoppers looking to get a head start on their holiday wish lists: “Lock your cars. Do not leave your items inside the cars and come inside and shop.”

The enhanced security measures will be in place through January 4.

Making good on bet, Boxboro elementary school principal camps out on school roof

BOXBORO, MASS. (WHDH) — Students in Boxboro received a special greeting from above on Friday morning when their principal waved to them from the school roof as they disembarked from their buses.

Blanchard Memorial Elementary School Principal Michael Votto had promised that if the students raised $25,000 through their fun run, he would sleep on the roof. The students enthusiastically met their goal, and true to his word, Votto pitched a tent to brave the chilly November weather.

“I wanted to set a good example for my students and hold up my end of the bargain,” Votto said.

West Palm Beach officer befriends homeless woman, offers food and new shelter

**South Florida Officer Goes Above and Beyond to Help Homeless Woman in West Palm Beach**

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) — A South Florida police officer lent a helping hand to a woman who was in desperate need of support. West Palm Beach Police Officer Gesner Michel went above and beyond to assist a homeless woman facing difficult times.

While on duty, Officer Michel, who finds his work fulfilling, met the woman and immediately befriended her. “You wake up every morning and you know you’re meeting new people and you get a chance to give people hope,” he said. “I made contact with that person—let me rephrase—not person, my new friend.”

The woman shared that she was looking for a job but was struggling to make progress. That’s when Officer Michel stepped in to give her that extra boost of encouragement. “Hope is giving someone that extra boost, that extra chance, you know, just to say, ‘Hey, it’s not that I hope things get better, I know things will get better,’” he explained.

Showing compassion, Officer Michel took her out for a warm meal. “We’re going to get you some food, OK? It’s on me today. I feel good today. You’re making me happy, so I’m going to make you even more happy,” he told her.

During their time together, Michel helped the woman obtain a new identification card and even found her a place to sleep for the night. “At least we know we got a bed, right? Did I not say we weren’t going to get something?” the officer joked with her.

The woman was deeply grateful for his kindness and assistance. “She was just so grateful. She was surprised, you know, that I took the time to help her and I told her it was not a problem, it’s normal for me,” said Michel.

Looking ahead, Officer Michel is now focused on helping his new friend secure a job. “She says she’s a really good waitress, so if anyone in West Palm Beach would like to hire somebody, she’ll be ready,” he said.

Officer Michel hopes to continue making a positive impact in his community. “‘Cause I live by paying it forward,” he shared.

Michel has proudly served with the West Palm Beach Police Department for seven years.

Adjusters inspect remnants of Heat coach Erik Spoelstra’s Coral Gables-area home destroyed in fire amid probe

**Miami Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra’s Coral Gables Home Destroyed in Massive Fire**

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) — Insurance adjusters were seen inspecting the charred remains of Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra’s multimillion-dollar home near Coral Gables, just a day after it was destroyed in a devastating fire.

7News cameras captured the adjusters heading inside the property on Friday morning. The home is located near Southwest 49th Avenue and 80th Street in the Ponce-Davis neighborhood. Outside the residence, a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser was parked as officials conducted their assessment.

The five-bedroom, six-bathroom residence burst into flames early Thursday morning. Radio transmissions from first responders captured a firefighter reporting, “A single family home. We’ve got fire in the back.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Victoria Byrd addressed reporters after daybreak, describing the severity of the blaze. “We found fire that was as tall as the trees,” she said.

7News cameras also captured Coach Spoelstra watching helplessly as his home was consumed by flames. At the time, Spoelstra was flying back to South Florida with the team after their game against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night.

Dozens of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue firefighters battled the blaze for hours. Battalion Chief Byrd highlighted the challenges they faced. “Due to the privacy wall and a lot of the tree cover, it was very difficult to access, with only one point of entry,” she explained.

Thanks to the crews’ efforts, the fire was contained and did not spread to nearby homes along Southwest 80th Street. “We used multiple aerial apparatuses, fire engines, and rescues to help combat this incident,” Byrd added.

7Skyforce aerial footage captured the aftermath, showing flames that had gutted most of the structure.

Spoelstra purchased the one-acre property in 2023 for $6.6 million. Neighbors told 7News that he had since renovated the house, which spans more than 5,700 square feet and includes amenities such as a pool, outdoor kitchen, and tennis courts.

Just two weeks ago, Spoelstra had invited his team over for a barbecue. The Miami Heat posted a video showing players using the grill and playing soccer on the property.

Now, the home has been reduced to soot and ash and has officially been declared a total loss.

Despite this personal tragedy, Spoelstra is expected to coach as the Heat host the Charlotte Hornets at the Kaseya Center Friday night.

JUST ONE STATION: Man arrested after woman reports being choked with wire during carjacking in Boston

BOSTON (WHDH) — A man has been arrested following a violent carjacking in Boston Thursday night, in which an Uber driver was nearly strangled by a passenger who then stole her vehicle and fled the scene, according to Boston police and a witness.

Police responded to the area of Columbus Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue at approximately 6:45 p.m. after receiving a report of a carjacking.

A nearby pizza shop employee, Stergio Sansaridis, shared details of the shocking incident with 7NEWS. He described the moment when a woman rushed into the store, pleading for help.

“She told me, ‘I’m an Uber driver. I was giving him a ride and he had a wire, put it around my neck, started choking me. I got away,’” Sansaridis explained. “She came out, and he stole the car, drove off, and then I called the cops. I felt bad for her. I’ve seen a bunch of stuff here and there, but I’ve never experienced or seen anything like that.”

Sansaridis noted that the marks from the wire were still visible around the woman’s neck.

“I don’t know how she got away, but she got away,” he said. “Traumatizing for me. You hear people trying to make a living and that happens. It’s just crazy.”

The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Boston police later located the stolen SUV more than two miles away on Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester. The woman told 7NEWS she had left her phone inside the vehicle, which helped police track it down.

No other details are immediately available.
