Rick Pitino pulling many positives from St. John’s competitive preseason loss to Michigan

One week ago, St. John’s struggled against mid-major opponent Towson but found a way to secure a win. Saturday night, however, they fell short in a 96-94 overtime setback to Michigan at the Garden. Despite the loss, there were encouraging signs in the Johnnies’ fight, their ability to rally from deficits, and the overall play of their frontcourt.

“I saw a lot of really good things,” coach Rick Pitino said afterward. “But I think the weakness is just eight new guys [getting used to] playing together. Great game, great game.”

The entertaining exhibition featured two preseason Top 10 teams, each boasting some of the nation’s best forwards: Zuby Ejiofor for St. John’s and Yaxel Lendeborg for Michigan. Both forwards performed well, combining for 49 points. St. John’s forwards Bryce Hopkins and Dillon Mitchell also had strong moments, each contributing 13 points. Point guard Dylan Darling (seven points, two assists) rebounded from a shaky outing against Towson.

Ultimately, Michigan proved superior on the glass, outrebounding St. John’s by 12 boards. The Wolverines also shot an efficient 52.2 percent from the field compared to 39.7 percent for the Johnnies. Pitino emphasized the need for his guards to improve their rebounding and defense while praising the active play of his frontcourt.

It didn’t help that starting guards Oziyah Sellers and Joson Sanon (14 points) both fouled out, limiting their minutes. Michigan coach Dusty May believed this was a key factor in the outcome.

The Red Storm trailed by eight early in overtime before sophomore Lefteris Liotopoulos caught fire, scoring eight consecutive points. He had a chance to give St. John’s the lead with 8.4 seconds left but missed two of three free throws.

Pitino and Ejiofor expressed concern over being outrebounded in both exhibition games and acknowledged that the many new players aren’t yet fully cohesive. While the defense forced 22 turnovers, it allowed 54 points in the paint to the mammoth Wolverines, who feature two seven-footers, Morez Johnson Jr. and Aday Mara.

“We’re trying to get back to that defensive mindset we had last year,” said Ejiofor, who finished with 24 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals. “It’s going to take time, but we’re going to figure it out.

“There’s no excuses. Winning is the standard that we’re trying to build here at St. John’s. Everybody came here to win, all the transfers came here to win. Just be better and learn from it.”

Pitino repeatedly praised the experience of facing an elite opponent at the Garden for the lessons it provided. The Hall of Fame coach intentionally scheduled a difficult nonconference slate to better prepare St. John’s for the challenges ahead.

“We’ll be ready for Quinnipiac. I don’t know if we’re ready for Alabama or Kentucky, Ole Miss, and the Las Vegas trip,” Pitino said. “But we’ll get it done. A lot of people are in the same boat we’re in with new players. I set the schedule tough because I need to know [where we have to get better].

“If we played a [lesser] team and won easily, we wouldn’t know what our weaknesses are. So I wanted to find out, and I found out tonight what our weaknesses are. It’s a great teaching tool.”

Klay Thompson Thinks Dallas Mavericks Have First-Time All-Star

The Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs entered the season with roughly the same expectations. However, after just one game, it’s clear that the Mavericks are already lagging behind. In their season opener, Dallas suffered a heavy 125-92 loss to the Spurs.

Victor Wembanyama led the charge for San Antonio, delivering a dominant 40-point performance that exposed Dallas on both ends of the floor. Meanwhile, Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg struggled, managing an inefficient ten-point effort. Despite Flagg’s underwhelming showing, fans and teammates remain optimistic about his potential.

### Mavericks to Rely on PJ Washington’s Breakout

Klay Thompson, however, believes another player is poised to step up for Dallas this season: PJ Washington. Quietly one of the better 3-and-D players in the league, Washington showed flashes of his potential in the opener against San Antonio. Last season, he averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 38.1% from three-point range.

In the opener, Washington contributed 17 efficient points and played his role well, even as San Antonio outpaced Dallas. Thompson expressed high hopes for Washington’s development:

“There are so many great players on this roster,” Thompson told CBS. “I think PJ has All-Star potential. I really do.”

Though the Mavericks are headlined by Thompson, Cooper Flagg, and Anthony Davis, success in the competitive Western Conference will require key role players to evolve into stars. Thompson elaborated on Washington’s value:

“I really believe PJ can be one of the better two-way players in the NBA. There aren’t many players who can do what PJ does as far as guarding one through five, scoring from the outside, scoring on the interior, rebounding on both ends of the court. Very excited for him. I think he has another level to get to.”

### Dallas Mavericks Need to Bounce Back

The loss to the Spurs was clinical — even embarrassing. Wembanyama was unstoppable, Stephon Castle added 22 points, and De’Aaron Fox didn’t even suit up. Dallas entered the season with high hopes of contending for a title. After one game, those hopes are far from dashed, but it’s evident that Cooper Flagg still has a lot of development ahead, the defense needs to tighten up, and roster depth remains a concern.

If Washington can emerge as a reliable 20-point scorer and become one of the league’s better defenders, Thompson’s optimistic prediction might just come true. For now, the Mavericks face an uphill battle as they look to build chemistry and improve across the board. Fans will be watching closely to see if this promising squad can rise to the challenge in what’s shaping up to be a tough Western Conference season.

Maccabi Tel Aviv vs Midtjylland Prediction and Betting Tips | October 23rd 2025

**Maccabi Tel Aviv vs Midtjylland Preview: UEFA Europa League 2025-26**

Maccabi Tel Aviv will face Midtjylland at the Gradski Stadion on Thursday in the third round of the 2025-26 UEFA Europa League group stage. After a challenging run of recent results, the Yellows are eager to turn their fortunes around as they return to continental football this week.

In their Europa League opener last month, Maccabi Tel Aviv secured a point with a goalless draw against Greek side PAOK. However, their second group game saw them suffer a 3-1 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb. Despite taking the lead 14 minutes in through a strike from Saied Farchi, they were unable to hold on as Dinamo came from behind to claim all three points.

Midtjylland, on the other hand, got off to a strong start in the competition. They picked up a 2-0 win over Sturm Graz in their opening match, capitalizing on an own goal in the first half and a late goal from Ousmane Diao. The Danish side then followed that up with an impressive 3-2 away victory against Premier League club Nottingham Forest, with Diao once again on the scoresheet.

Currently sitting second in the group with six points, Midtjylland can move closer to securing a spot in the knockout stages with a win on Thursday.

### Maccabi Tel Aviv vs Midtjylland: Head-to-Head and Key Stats

– This Thursday’s game will be only the second meeting between the two clubs. Their first encounter was last season’s Europa League group stage, where Midtjylland triumphed 2-0.
– Midtjylland have netted five goals so far in this Europa League campaign, second only to Dinamo Zagreb who have six.
– Maccabi Tel Aviv have been solid defensively in their domestic league this season, conceding just three goals in six matches—the best defensive record in the Israeli top flight.

### Match Prediction

Maccabi Tel Aviv come into this clash without a win in their last four games after a run of four consecutive victories. Playing away from home, in a neutral venue in Serbia, they will have no home advantage and must be at their best to earn points.

Midtjylland, nicknamed Hedens Drenge, are in excellent form, currently undefeated in their last seven matches across all competitions, winning six of those. Their momentum and superior form suggest they are favorites to claim victory in this encounter.

**Prediction:** Maccabi Tel Aviv 1-2 Midtjylland

### Betting Tips

– **Tip 1: Match Result** – Midtjylland to win
– **Tip 2: Goals Over/Under 2.5** – Over 2.5 goals
– **Tip 3: Both Teams to Score** – YES (Both teams have scored in four of Midtjylland’s last five matches)

Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting Europa League battle as both teams aim to boost their chances of progressing to the knockout stages.

Who Went Home On ‘The Golden Bachelor’ Tonight? And Who’s Headed To Hometown Week?

In some ways, *The Golden Bachelor* Season 2 feels like it’s only just begun. But after saying goodbye to three more women this week, Mel Owens has officially handed out his three Hometown Week stems and is headed to meet the families! That’s right, folks — Hometown Week is already on the horizon, followed by Fantasy Suite Week, a Women Tell All special, and then the *Golden Bachelor* Season 2 finale!

So who made the cut, who got cut, and who self-eliminated ahead of the make-it-or-break-it week? We’ve got answers.

### The Golden Bachelor Group Date Recap: Good Vibes Only

Tonight’s episode featured Mel’s final group date of the season to Butterfly Mountain, where he brought Peg, Debbie, Cheryl, Nicole, and Carol on a spiritual journey to rid themselves of negative emotions and become more aligned. The group engaged in mud baths, ice plunges, tantric yoga, and other cleansing activities.

Mel managed to snag crucial one-on-one time with all the ladies. However, two Golden Gals were emitting some negative energy.

The first was… you guessed it, Nicolle! After episodes packed with PDA with Mel and openly discussing her plans to leverage her *Golden Bachelor* fame for an influencer career, Nicolle gave Mel a glimpse of her true intentions. When asked where she saw herself in five years, she immediately focused on business:

> “My dad is my accountant, he takes care of my finances, and he says, ‘You could have a little more income coming in.’ I work on Instagram, I’m working on monetizing it, and would love to author a cookbook with plant-based recipes.”

Mel later admitted to the cameras,

> “There’s a few things in the conversation that gave me pause. This could have been what Robin talked about.”

Instead of probing further, Mel ultimately brushed aside those concerns and sent her home.

The second source of negative vibes came from Carol. She realized that she and Mel must be lagging behind the other relationships because she was the only remaining woman who hadn’t received a one-on-one date. With Hometown Week rapidly approaching, Carol concluded that although she was interested in Mel, they hadn’t formed a solid enough connection. She chose to self-eliminate — a decision that, while disappointing for fans of hers (myself included), was admirable in its honesty and self-awareness.

At this point in the journey, it seemed clear that Cindy and Debbie were definite rose recipients. Nicolle’s spell on Mel was broken, and the last rose would come down to Peg or Cheryl.

### Mel Owens and Cindy Angelcyk Cullers’ One-on-One Date Recap: The Sun, The Moon, and The Stars

While Cindy didn’t receive Mel’s first impression rose, from Night 1 it was obvious he had his eye on her. Their physical chemistry accelerated quickly.

For their one-on-one date, Mel took Cindy horseback riding up to Griffith Observatory. There, Cindy opened up about her life — her divorce seven years ago, her three daughters, and her struggles to find love since then.

> “I am shocked to be feeling the way I’m feeling,” she admitted. She told Mel, “My feelings for you are real.”

He returned the sentiment, gifting her her own personal star in the sky. The two spent the night kissing, bonding, dancing, and stargazing at the Observatory. Cindy summed up the experience perfectly:

> “He’s the sun, the moon, and the stars for me all wrapped up into one.”

Safe to say, she was headed to Hometown Week.

### The Golden Bachelor: Who Went Home? Who’s Getting a Hometown Date?

Before the toughest rose ceremony yet, Mel said he “prayed on it” and carefully decided which three women would advance to the next round.

Ahead of the big night, all the women FaceTimed with their loved ones before learning their fate.

In addition to Carol’s self-elimination, Cheryl and Nicolle were also sent home.

True to form, Nicolle stirred the pot on her way out:

> “When it doesn’t work out with the one you pick, cause it probably won’t, you call me. I mean that. I’m a little surprised at this outcome, I really thought it was gonna be me, it should have been. Mel didn’t choose me but maybe you’ll choose me for *The Golden Bachelorette*, you never know.”

ABC, please do NOT choose her for *The Golden Bachelorette*! Let’s keep it wholesome, people!

### Mel’s Top Three Moving On to Hometown Week

– **Cindy Angelcyk Cullers:** 60-year-old retired biomedical engineer from Austin, Texas
– **Debbie Siebers:** 65-year-old fitness professional from Denver, Colorado
– **Peg Munson:** 62-year-old from Las Vegas, Nevada

Will the loved ones accept Mel with open arms, or will they be as skeptical as Bachelor Nation was when Season 2 first started? Stay tuned for next week’s recap!

New episodes of *The Golden Bachelor* Season 2 premiere Wednesdays on ABC, with next-day streaming on Hulu.
