Gangster drama | Review of Shreyas Rajagopal’s Gunboy

Fed up with the relentless beatings dished out by a local bully, an introverted boy takes extreme measures that threaten to tear apart his small town. Shreyas Rajagopal’s *Gunboy* begins on this somewhat templated note.

Our hero, Arvind, and his best friend, Sudipto, are used to being pummelled by Jaggi Ranade, who also happens to be the son of the incumbent mafia boss of the steel town of Rannwara. Luckily for us, what the book does with these familiar ingredients is both surprising at the plot level and refreshing in its treatment.

The book’s trump card is the character of Amar, the anti-hero to Arvind. While the reader roots for Arvind, they are constantly intrigued by Amar. Amar is a hitman with a fascinating personal story and a fetish for guns. An early character study chapter is basically just Amar cleaning his many guns while having a drink. It is his favourite weapon, a Beretta 9 mm with a custom grip finished in white and gold, that ends up in Arvind’s hands and transforms the novel into a tinderbox.

Rajagopal’s biggest strength is his characterisation. Both Arvind and Amar begin as archetypes, but through frequent flashbacks, we learn more about their beginnings, their motivations, and so on. The author also manages to communicate the texture of lived reality in small-town India exceptionally well.

For example, when Amar steps into a shady-looking hotel that’s most likely a hotspot for prostitution, the proprietor asks him not to bring a girl to the room because it’s not that kind of place. But as Rajagopal points out in the next line, his tenor and his eyes make it abundantly clear that it is exactly that kind of place.

In the wake of Anurag Kashyap’s iconic film *Gangs of Wasseypur*, there has been a string of Indian films and streaming shows — *Mirzapur*, *Bhaukaal*, *Garmi*, et al — that have sought to recapture the small-town gangsters formula. But very few have done it with the smarts and raw kinetic energy displayed by *Gunboy*.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced action thriller that doesn’t insult your intelligence, this is it.

The Wizards of the Coast team acknowledges that releasing seven expansions in one year is unusual and emphasizes that this will not become the standard going forward.

### 2026 Tentative Release Schedule

**Lorwyn Eclipsed (January 23):**
The MTG year begins with a return to a fan-favorite setting. *Lorwyn Eclipsed* marks a comeback to the mystical realm of Lorwyn. Players can expect to see familiar creatures as Planeswalkers join forces with some Strixhaven students for a grander exploration of this strange realm.

**Untitled Universes Beyond (TBA):**
The second MTG set of 2026 remains a mystery. The curtain will be lifted at New York Comic Con on Friday, October 10, revealing more about this upcoming expansion.

**Secrets of Strixhaven (April 2026):**
Following their journey in *Lorwyn Eclipsed*, April’s set takes players back to Strixhaven University itself. This expansion will delve into life on and off campus, as graduates venture into the wider world and explore their new paths.

**Marvel Super Heroes (June 2026):**
Riding high on the recent success of the *Marvel’s Spider-Man* set, Wizards of the Coast is continuing its collaboration with Marvel. This upcoming set will explore more heroes and villains from the vast Marvel Universe.

**The Hobbit (August 2026):**
It has been over two years since *Magic: The Gathering* crossed over with *The Lord of the Rings*. On Friday, Wizards of the Coast announced a new set based on *The Hobbit*. This set will feature iconic characters like Bilbo Baggins and the fearsome dragon Smaug, diving deeper into Tolkien’s world.

ED Files Supplementary Prosecution Complaint Against Raj Kundra In ₹6,606 Crore Bitcoin Scam

**Mumbai:** The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has submitted a supplementary prosecution complaint against Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty’s husband and businessman Raj Kundra in connection with the money laundering probe related to a Rs 6,606 crore bitcoin scam involving the Delhi-based company Variabletech Pvt Ltd (VTPL).

### ED’s Allegations

The agency alleges that Kundra received 285 bitcoins worth Rs 150.47 crore in April 2024 from Amit Bharadwaj, director of VTPL, who passed away while the case was pending. The bitcoins were reportedly intended for setting up a Bitcoin mining farm in 2017. However, as the deal could not materialise, the ED claims Kundra still possesses the bitcoins, which allegedly constitute proceeds of crime.

Furthermore, the ED states that Kundra has refused to share any details regarding these transactions.

### Property Transactions Linked

In addition to the bitcoin allegations, the ED claims Kundra purchased immovable properties in Juhu and Pune using the proceeds of crime. It is also alleged that Kundra transferred these properties into the name of his wife, Shilpa Shetty, at half their market value.

The agency has filed a second supplementary prosecution complaint not only against Kundra but also against a Delhi-based businessman, Rajesh Satija, as part of its ongoing probe.

### Conflicting Versions and Investigation Details

The ED uncovered several inconsistencies in Kundra’s explanation about the receipt of bitcoins from Amit Bharadwaj. According to the prosecution complaint, Amit had transferred 285 bitcoins to Kundra for investment in a joint venture aimed at setting up a new Bitcoin mining farm in Ukraine.

In statements recorded in April and June 2018, Amit claimed that he was approached by Kundra and Shetty for this joint venture, for which they sought $2.25 million in bitcoin. Amit said he had transferred $1 million (approximately 300 bitcoins) by the end of July 2017, with the remaining amount expected after the agreement was finalized.

While Kundra admitted to receiving the funds, he claimed he was merely a mediator between his Israeli friend Shlomi Amouyal (alias Tom) and Amit. Kundra said that Amit transferred the bitcoins to Tom’s wallets, and the deal was later cancelled when Amit failed to send the remaining amount.

Amit, however, stated that he spoke to Tom, who identified himself as a tech contact for Kundra. The ED also noted that Kundra refused to provide wallet details, citing loss of information due to phone issues in 2018, during the ongoing investigation.

### ED’s Findings and Actions

The ED pointed out glaring mismatches in the versions presented by Amit and Kundra. It revealed that Kundra had sent a term sheet to Amit, which acted as an agreement but did not mention Tom. The agency rejected Kundra’s claim of being only a mediator.

According to the ED, “It is clear that the deal to establish Bitcoin mining farms was made between Kundra and Amit (through his father Mahendra Bharadwaj). Since the deal did not materialise, Kundra is still in possession and enjoyment of 285 Bitcoins valued at Rs 150.47 crore.”

The agency further alleged that Kundra deliberately withheld wallet addresses and failed to surrender the 285 bitcoins.

The ED is actively investigating money laundering allegations against VTPL and its directors, Ajay Bhardwaj and his late brother Amit Bhardwaj. They are accused of luring investors by promising high returns in bitcoins and cryptocurrency developed by them, reportedly amassing 80,000 bitcoins (worth Rs 6,606 crore in November 2017) through the Bhardwaj family and other MLM agents.

### Case Background

In April last year, ED had attached several properties linked to Kundra, including five flats in the Ocean View Society on Juhu Tara Road worth Rs 82 crore, and a bungalow in Pune valued at Rs 11 crore. These properties were transferred in Shilpa Shetty’s name.

“Ravi is a friend and a client of mine. I didn’t even know Jayam Ravi well until he sent a divorce notice to his wife, who has blatantly lied that she isn’t aware of what was to come. Any speculation about a romantic relationship is purely media-driven, and they will be responsible even if something happens between us in the future,” Kenishaa asserted.

She emphasized that their relationship is strictly professional and that there has been no physical involvement between them, as both are aware of their boundaries.

“No one deserves so much abuse irrespective of the gender, and I can release all the evidence, with or without Ravi’s permission, in the court of law, from my notes of our therapy sessions. Anything to do with his divorce has to be questioned with Ravi and Aarti and their leading families,” she shared.

Kenishaa further alleged, “Just because Aarti is afraid of what she’s done to Ravi, she cannot use me as a scapegoat to cover up her doings.
