Sports betting guru ‘Sugar’ caught with one-way ticket to Colombia in bizarre prelude to explosive NBA gambling case

A sports-betting guru caught up in the explosive NBA gambling scandal attempted to flee the country in January with $10,000 and a one-way ticket to Colombia, court papers reveal. Shane “Sugar” Hennen, 40, was apprehended at Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport as federal authorities closed in on a separate point-shaving case involving him and former NBA player Jontay Porter.

The point-shaving scheme, detailed in court documents, served as a prelude to the stunning twin indictments unveiled on Thursday. The feds accused Hennen, a convicted felon known for flaunting his gambling wins on Instagram, of masterminding a plan in which Porter would fake injuries to pull himself out of games, allowing them to place lucrative bets.

Porter eventually pleaded guilty in the game-rigging scandal and was banned from the NBA. Meanwhile, after his failed attempt to flee, Hennen entered into plea negotiations in that case.

What initially appeared to be an isolated affair unraveled into a much wider gambling probe. On Thursday, authorities arrested 31 individuals, including wiseguys from four Mafia families, Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former NBA player Damon Jones.

Hennen faces charges in both indictments—covering illegal sports betting and rigged poker games. According to court documents, he allegedly supplied cheating technology, such as card-shuffling machines altered to digitally read the cards in the deck, which was used in the crooked poker games.

The sports betting indictment also details how Hennen placed bets based on Porter’s fake injuries. More explosively, it alleges that Terry Rozier, who had been previously cleared by the NBA after a probe into unusual betting activity, told conspirators he would pull himself out of a 2023 game with an injury.

Hennen reportedly directed a network of bettors who wagered $200,000 on Rozier’s underperformance. The indictment states:

“Rozier’s early exit from the March 23 game and his related underperformance relative to his season averages for points, assists, and three-pointers resulted in the success of numerous fraudulent wagers placed on Rozier’s unders by the defendants and their co-conspirators.”

This sprawling scandal has rocked the NBA and highlighted the growing challenges authorities face in combatting illegal sports gambling and game manipulation.

Jets claim LB Kobe King off of waivers

The New York Jets have added a linebacker to their active roster ahead of Week 8’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The team announced that they have claimed Kobe King off waivers.

King was recently released by the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday when they activated running back Aaron Jones off injured reserve. Originally a sixth-round pick earlier this year, King appeared in five games, recording four tackles. Most of his playing time came on special teams.

In other roster updates, the Jets could see the return of linebacker Quincy Williams this weekend. Williams has missed the last four games due to a shoulder injury but was designated to return from injured reserve this week. He was listed as questionable to play on Friday.

However, the Jets will be without Cam Jones, who has been ruled out with a hip injury ahead of the game.

Aaron Rodgers Sends Bold Message on Packers Future Ahead of Week 8 Game

The great Aaron Rodgers may have to play against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, but when all is said and done, even he admitted he’ll always be part of the Packers organization.

Now about two-and-a-half years removed from Green Bay, Rodgers reflected on his time there and announced he would retire as a member of the Packers when his playing career comes to a close.

Rodgers, of course, started his Hall of Fame career with the Packers after they selected him 24th overall from California-Berkeley in the 2005 NFL Draft. He played his first 18 seasons with Green Bay, winning four MVP awards and earning the MVP title of Super Bowl XLV—his lone championship to date—which came against his current team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This Sunday night, Rodgers will face off against the Packers for the first time in his career, as the first-place Steelers (4-2) host Green Bay (4-1-1), who also lead the NFC North.

### Aaron Rodgers’ Football Career ‘Will End One Day In Green Bay’

Rodgers surely didn’t have rosy feelings about his former home when he left after the Packers effectively pushed him out by choosing quarterback Jordan Love as their starter following the 2022 NFL season. However, bygones are bygones, and Rodgers has had time to reflect on the special moments he experienced in Green Bay.

He said this is why he intends to retire with the Packers at some point in 2026, as he has stated that this, his 21st season, will be his last.

“It was such a tight-knit group for so long, and I outlasted most of them,” Rodgers said. “That’s why I feel so good about my time [in Green Bay], because damn near everything great in my life is because of my football career, and my football career start[ed] and will end one day with Green Bay.

“So we got a lot of love for all of those memories and a lot of great friends that I still carry with me to this day.”

### Aaron Rodgers Shares Memories of His Time in Green Bay

Reflecting on his experience, Rodgers shared some of his general memories, including being on the road and pulling pranks with his former teammates during training camp at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin, while playing for then-coach Mike McCarthy.

“We were always messing around [and] having a good time,” Rodgers said. “I mean, some of the shenanigans and pranks that me and Brett Goode pulled on the rookies at St. Norbert’s.

“It got so crazy, some of the pranks that they were pulling, that Mike at one point said, ‘Hey, cut that s–t out,’ because they were doing some wild stuff.”

Rodgers also recalled the plane rides where Packers players would wake each other up with flying pillows and blankets that didn’t always hit the correct target.

“Guys were just flinging the wrapped-up blankets and rolling up the pillows [and throwing them] at people,” Rodgers said. “There were some of the media and [public relations] and community relations—they’d all be on the same plane as us, and they were catching strays on the plane sometimes.”

Philadelphia 76ers Already Making ‘Silly’ Excuses for Joel Embiid

In their opening game of the season, the Philadelphia 76ers secured a much-needed victory over the Boston Celtics. After a disappointing campaign last year, the 76ers were desperate to start this season on the right foot. Thanks to stellar performances from VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia began the year with a promising 1-0 record.

However, the game’s spotlight on Joel Embiid was less encouraging. The star center made only one of his nine shots, finishing with just four points in 20 minutes of play. Still managing his workload as he recovers from a lingering leg injury, Embiid appeared to be a shadow of his usual dominant self.

Despite earning $55.2 million this season, the 76ers are not overly concerned about his slow start—for now.

### Philadelphia 76ers Make Excuses for Joel Embiid

Embiid was initially not expected to play on opening night. Having missed the majority of the preseason, it seemed he was rushed back into action prematurely. Many argue it might have been wiser to allow him to fully recover, especially considering the team is currently attributing his poor performance to injury and “rust.”

Even after a lackluster outing, Embiid still received some praise. Head coach Nick Nurse said, “I’m super happy he was out there. I think that he played good. I know that’s going to sound silly, one for nine. He just didn’t shoot it very good. I thought he transferred the ball good. I thought he made some good decisions. I thought he took good shots. I thought he protected the rim.”

While Nurse may be content with Embiid’s effort, the numbers tell a different story. Embiid recorded a plus/minus of -16, which is rare in a winning effort. Though he avoided turnovers, his shooting was undeniably poor. Defensively, his impact was minimal—the Celtics shot 46.2% when he was on the floor and 47.3% when he was off, a negligible difference.

Despite the subpar performance, Nurse quickly offered excuses. “He hasn’t done much, right?” the coach remarked. “He’s kind of played a scrimmage and a preseason game, and I think there’s some rust there, but I thought he was moving good and made good decisions, which is really positive.”

### Philadelphia 76ers Need Embiid at His Best

Joel Embiid remains one of the greatest players in Sixers history. When healthy, his dominance is unquestionable. Yet, despite his stardom, the 76ers have never advanced past the second round of the playoffs, even while sharing the court with elite talent.

This season, the 76ers are fully committed to Maxey, Embiid, and Paul George. With the addition of Edgecombe, after just one game, Philadelphia looks poised to be among the NBA’s top teams. They have always been competitive but have yet to take that crucial next step toward championship contention.

The hope is that Embiid will soon regain his full form and lead the team to greater success in the months ahead.
