Falcons update WR Drake London to questionable with hip injury

The Falcons have updated wide receiver Drake London’s game status to questionable for Sunday’s matchup. London was a limited participant in Friday’s practice due to a hip injury and has not yet received an official game designation. This season, he has recorded 38 catches for 469 yards and two touchdowns.

In other roster moves, the Falcons placed inside linebacker Divine Deablo on injured reserve after he suffered a fractured left forearm. Over six games, Deablo contributed a half sack, a fumble recovery, four pass breakups, and 24 tackles.

The team also activated safety Jordan Fuller from injured reserve. Fuller was designated to return on October 16 after being sidelined with a knee injury since September 13. Although he did not play in Week 7, Fuller has been a full participant in practice since his 21-day return window opened. Earlier in the season, he saw limited action, playing just one defensive snap and 16 special teams snaps in the Falcons’ Week 1 loss to the Buccaneers.

Additionally, the Falcons signed inside linebacker Ronnie Harrison to the active roster and elevated wide receiver Dylan Drummond along with quarterback Easton Stick from the practice squad for Sunday’s game. Harrison, who last played in Week 18 of the 2024 season for the Colts, joined the Falcons during the offseason and has spent the current season on the practice squad. He brings seven years of NFL experience, with 48 starts across 84 career appearances.

Quarterback Easton Stick will serve as the backup to Kirk Cousins, who is set to start in place of the injured Michael Penix.

RandBall: Vikings fans are getting antsy to see J.J. McCarthy play again

This year is supposed to be Year 1 of the true Vikings plan, even if O’Connell and GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah are technically in Year 4. They have their hand-picked young quarterback. He came into the year healthy, and the team cleared the deck for him to be the Week 1 starter. A franchise that has had a fitful time developing young QBs, often resorting to veteran stopgaps, was finally poised to break that cycle.

Then McCarthy struggled. And got hurt again, after missing all of last season. Now, his recovery seems to be taking longer — or at least it’s on a very generous timeline designed to help McCarthy succeed in the long run, but it feels agonizing in the present.

Fans realize Carson Wentz is a stopgap. He is graded No. 35 out of 37 eligible NFL QBs this season by Pro Football Focus. Wentz will play well enough to win and poorly enough to lose, often in the same game. He’s not the same caliber QB as Kirk Cousins, but he is similar in that his ceiling and floor are too close to each other. A full year of Wentz would be spinning your wheels on the way to an 8-9 or 9-8 record.

Fans can also see that Sam Darnold (No. 1 grade from PFF) and Daniel Jones (No. 9) are smoothly operating offenses for winning teams. They see Drake Maye, the No. 3 pick in 2024 — a player the Vikings coveted but had no realistic chance of drafting — starting to break out with the Patriots. There is QB envy, and the only cure is seeing McCarthy play and do good things.

I think most Vikings fans would still consider this season a success if the team missed the playoffs but learned that McCarthy is on a reasonable trajectory to becoming a top-10 quarterback. The only way we can know that is if he plays. That will come soon enough, of course, but never soon enough. So we look for breadcrumbs: both McCarthy and Wentz were listed as “limited” on Monday’s initial estimated injury report. What might that mean for Thursday?

By comparison, Panthers QB Bryce Young suffered a high ankle sprain on Sunday but hasn’t yet been ruled out for next week. People are just less patient in general. We live in a culture conditioned to expect convenience, and waiting for anything is not convenient. Waiting for McCarthy is particularly agonizing for long-suffering fans. But that’s all they can do for now.

Switching gears, the Wild played the most Wild game of the season so far — tight and low-scoring — resulting in a much-needed 3-1 win over the Rangers.

In baseball, it’s the Blue Jays vs. the Dodgers in the World Series after George Springer rallied Toronto to a 4-3 win in Game 7 of the ALCS over Seattle. My guess is that most Americans are rooting for the Canadian team.

The Wolves, who used to be the worst franchise, are now among the best. I’ll talk more about that with Chris Hine on a special season preview podcast that will be out soon.

Also, Randy Johnson will join me on Wednesday’s regular show to talk Gophers football. After a big win over Nebraska, it’s on to Iowa.

Notre Dame football key OL to miss 3–4 weeks with knee injury

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team has encountered a significant setback amid its playoff push. Starting left guard and team captain Billy Schrauth is expected to miss 3-4 weeks with a sprained MCL, marking a pivotal injury to the offensive front that could alter the course of the season.

This latest injury is the third major blow to a Notre Dame offensive line already struggling with depth issues. The absence of Schrauth threatens the Fighting Irish’s current resurgence after an 0-2 start to the season. As both a leader and an experienced player, Schrauth has been essential to the identity of Notre Dame football in 2025.

His ability to control the trenches has been especially vital in high-stakes games where physicality often determines the outcome. According to sources, “Notre Dame standout left guard Billy Schrauth is expected to miss 3-4 weeks due to a knee injury he suffered vs. USC Saturday. Schrauth, a team captain for the No. 12 Irish, is viewed as one of the top draft prospects among draft-eligible guards.”

The offensive line, already without center Ashton Craig (season-ending injury) and right guard Charles Jagusah (leg injury), will now lean on redshirt sophomore Sullivan Absher at left guard. The timing couldn’t be worse as the Fighting Irish stand at 5-2 and are clinging to College Football Playoff hopes with crucial November matchups ahead.

Before the injury, Schrauth was a core leader on an offensive front that averaged over 200 rushing yards per game. That dominance was on full display against USC, where running back Jeremiyah Love exploded for 228 yards and a touchdown. Jadarian Price added 87 more rushing yards, fueling Notre Dame’s fifth straight win.

With key November games looming, the Fighting Irish face a challenge in maintaining their momentum without Schrauth’s presence on the offensive line.

Everton´s Branthwaite set for prolonged absence after operation

Jarrad Branthwaite is set for a longer spell on the sidelines, as Everton have confirmed the defender will undergo surgery.

Branthwaite has yet to feature for Everton in the 2025-26 season after sustaining a hamstring injury during pre-season. Initially described as a “minor niggle,” the issue has since worsened, resulting in a setback for the 23-year-old.

Everton’s statement revealed that Branthwaite will undergo a surgical procedure to address the injury, with no date currently set for his return to action.

“Following specialist consultation, it has been determined the defender will undergo a surgical procedure to address the issue,” the club said. “Branthwaite will commence a structured rehabilitation programme under the supervision of the club’s medical team following the operation.”

Branthwaite signed a five-year contract with Everton in early July, having previously attracted interest from clubs such as Manchester United and Tottenham.

Last season, he played 30 Premier League matches and contributed significantly to Everton’s defence, helping secure eight clean sheets. Notably, only James Tarkowski (42) recorded more blocks than Branthwaite’s 23 in the competition last term.

Jaylen Brown leaves with injury as Celtics beat Raptors in preseason finale

The Boston Celtics have been preparing to enter this season without Jayson Tatum, but now the status of his longtime co-star, Jaylen Brown, is uncertain as well. Brown, Boston’s clear-cut No. 1 option while Tatum recovers from Achilles surgery, exited Wednesday night’s preseason finale at TD Garden with what the team described as left hamstring tightness.

Brown suffered the injury midway through the first quarter. Roughly a minute after falling awkwardly on a drive to the basket, he grabbed his hamstring, called for a substitution, and walked off toward the locker room. The Celtics announced Brown was doubtful to return, and he did not re-enter the game. He finished with seven points, two rebounds, and one steal in seven minutes.

In Brown’s absence, Derrick White made a significant impact, stuffing the stat sheet, while Neemias Queta played his best game of the preseason. The Celtics narrowly defeated the Toronto Raptors 110-108 on a last-second basket by Xavier Tillman.

However, the main story heading into next Wednesday’s regular-season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers is Brown’s availability.

### Potential Starting Lineups

The Celtics started a lineup of Payton Pritchard, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown, Chris Boucher, and Neemias Queta against the Raptors — a possible preview of their starting five on opening night if Brown is healthy.

If Brown misses time, the most logical starting lineup would feature Pritchard, White, Sam Hauser, Boucher, and Queta. Hauser, who started against Cleveland on Sunday, did not dress for Wednesday’s game.

### Facing Toronto’s Starters

Toronto started its top unit of Brandon Ingram, Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett, and Jakob Poeltl in this game. This marked the first time the Celtics faced an opponent’s starters during the preseason, as their first three opponents had rested most of their regulars.

White, one of only two returning starters from last season’s team along with Brown, stood out on both ends of the floor. He finished with 32 points, nine rebounds, six assists, four blocks, and just one turnover in 35 minutes.

No other Celtics player reached double digits until Anfernee Simons scored 14 points on 4-of-13 shooting and hit a crucial three-pointer with 2:53 remaining.

### Individual Performances

Pritchard struggled from the field, going 1-for-11 and 0-for-8 from three-point range. However, he made all eight of his free throws, dished out 10 assists, and posted a team-best plus-19 rating.

After seeing limited minutes in the first three preseason games, Queta impressed against the Raptors with four blocks and 12 rebounds, including five offensive boards. The Celtics’ lone 7-footer also scored eight points on 4-of-7 shooting, highlighted by a series of nifty post moves to score over Barnes in the second quarter.

Even with Hauser out of uniform, the Celtics utilized 12 different players in the opening quarter alone. Simons, Josh Minott, and Luka Garza entered at the 6:42 mark, followed by Jordan Walsh and Hugo Gonzalez, then Xavier Tillman and Baylor Scheierman.

### Depth and Rotation Strategy

It’s unclear how many of those reserves will see regular minutes this season, but head coach Joe Mazzulla hinted at the possibility of employing a deep rotation—or as he put it before the game, “no rotation at all”—to maximize the strengths of Boston’s new, less experienced roster.

“I don’t know that we’ll have one throughout the entire year,” Mazzulla said. “Listen, every time you have a team, a strength and a weakness can be very similar to those things, right? And I think one of our strengths is the depth that we have. We may have limited experience, we may have newness, but I think we have depth. And I think the ability to not have a rotation is a strength, because you can go to fresh guys, you can go to a bunch of different guys, you can do a bunch of different things. We’re in the, obviously, early stages of that, but I’m not sure that we will have one, and I think that actually could be a good thing for us throughout the season.”

### Frontcourt and Wing Depth Concerns

The Celtics are especially unproven in the frontcourt, where they’ll rely on Queta, Boucher, Garza, and Tillman to fill the void left by Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and Luke Kornet. On the wing behind Brown and Hauser, four young players—Minott, Walsh, Scheierman, and Gonzalez—are competing for minutes, all logging at least 11 minutes Wednesday night.

After the Celtics took a 106-94 lead with 1:53 remaining, Mazzulla opted to close with a lineup featuring Minott, Scheierman, and Gonzalez against Toronto’s backups. Although that group could not hold the lead amid several late Boston turnovers, Xavier Tillman’s game-winning 11-footer with 8.9 seconds left sealed the victory and sent the TD Garden crowd home happy.

Tillman, who also drained a clutch three-pointer earlier in the fourth quarter, was the only Boston reserve to finish with a positive plus/minus in the win.

PVL: Mylene Paat ‘grateful’ to be back after long layoff due to injury

MANILA, Philippines — Chery Tiggo may have lost its first two games to start the PVL Reinforced Conference, but Mylene Paat was grateful to finally return to action after being out for more than a year due to a shoulder injury.

Paat suffered a supraspinatus tear—a muscle in the rotator cuff—in her left shoulder that sidelined her for an extended period. Despite the tough start for her team, she expressed appreciation for being back on the court and contributing once again.
