Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj has emerged as the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket for the year 2025, surpassing Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani. Siraj claimed this milestone on Day 4 of the 2nd Test against the West Indies at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium by dismissing centurion Shai Hope, who had built an innings-defining 177-run partnership with John Campbell. This wicket took Siraj’s tally to 37 Test wickets in 2025.
So far in 2025, Siraj has featured in eight Tests for India and has been a crucial pillar of the pace attack alongside Jasprit Bumrah. With Bumrah missing a few games to manage his workload, Siraj’s endurance and consistency have stood out. Across 15 innings this year, Siraj has taken more than 37 wickets at an impressive average of under 27.
His performance during the five-Test series against England was particularly notable, where he took 23 wickets and was named Player of the Series.
In the latest Delhi Test, Siraj surpassed Blessing Muzarabani, who had taken 36 wickets from nine matches this year. Other notable wicket-takers this year include England’s Josh Tongue (19 wickets in three matches) and Ben Stokes (17 wickets in four matches), both trailing behind Muzarabani on the charts.
Siraj was India’s standout bowler during their 2025 tour of England, where he claimed the pivotal series-leveling wicket in the fifth and final Test at The Oval.
In total, Siraj has played 43 Tests, taking over 130 wickets at an average of under 30. His career includes eight four-wicket hauls and five five-wicket hauls. Most recently, he starred in India’s comprehensive innings victory over the West Indies in the 1st Test at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, taking 4/40 and 3/31.
Siraj’s rise to becoming a lethal Test bowler has been nothing short of remarkable. However, his journey has not been without hardship. Just days before his Test debut in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, Siraj suffered the tragic loss of his father due to illness.
Complicating matters, Siraj was confined to a strict COVID-19 bio-bubble in Australia and was unable to attend his father’s last rites back in India. His resilience and determination to succeed despite personal loss speak volumes about his character and endurance.
Mohammed Siraj continues to be a vital asset for India’s Test team, and his performances in 2025 have firmly established him as one of the premier pacers in world cricket.

スポーツ中継の主流がテレビからインターネットの有料配信に移りつつある。来年3月に開催される野球の国・地域別対抗戦、ワールド・ベースボール・クラシック（WBC）で、米動画配信大手が独占放送権を獲得したことが大きな話題になった。
WBCは2006年の第1回大会から23年の前回までに日本が3度優勝しており、国内ファンの人気が高い。前回大会では投打二刀流の大谷翔平選手（現ドジャース）の活躍もあり、地上波中継は40％を超える高視聴率を記録した。
来年の大会は、大谷選手の人気を当て込んだネット配信事業者の参入で放送権料が著しく高騰。過去の大会を中継したことがある日本のテレビ局は太刀打ちできなかったという。従来のようなテレビ中継を楽しむことは難しくなりそうで、視聴者の戸惑いが広がっている。
日本野球機構はテレビ局と協力し、録画放送の可能性を探るとみられているが、好きなスポーツでも有料契約には抵抗を感じる人もいるだろう。識者の中には「お金を払ってスポーツを見ることは日本人にはなかなか難しい」と話す者もいる。
一方で、世界のスポーツ中継では有料配信が当たり前になってきた。スマートフォンなどを使えば、いつでもどこでも視聴できるのが大きな強みだ。
実際、9月に名古屋で行われたプロボクシングの井上尚弥選手の世界タイトル戦は配信のみで中継された。また、2022年のサッカー・ワールドカップ（W杯）はインターネットテレビが全試合を配信している。
放送権や配信権は、観戦チケットの売り上げやスポンサー契約とともに、プロスポーツの主要な収入源である。各チームや競技団体は権利を少しでも高く売って収益を増やしたいと考えており、資金力のある媒体と契約を結ぶのは自然な流れだ。これにより選手の年俸アップや施設整備にも繋がっていく。
しかし、それがスポーツビジネスの潮流であっても、ファン目線を欠いてはならない。地上波中継がなくなり、テレビで観戦する人が減れば、競技の認知度や関心が低下するとの指摘もある。有料化によってファンや競技人口が減少すれば、かえって逆効果となる恐れがあるのだ。
日本では1953年にテレビ放送が始まり、高度経済成長の波に乗って家庭にテレビが普及した。国民は画面を通してプロ野球や大相撲などのスポーツ中継に熱中し、テレビあってこそのスポーツ人気が築かれてきた。WBC人気もその延長線上にあると言える。
世界では誰もが自由に情報に触れられる「ユニバーサルアクセス権」を制度化した国があり、国民的なスポーツ大会もこれに該当する。
今日は1964年の東京五輪を記念した「スポーツの日」だ。さまざまなスポーツを楽しみながら、変わりつつあるスポーツ中継の現状と公共性について考えてみるのもよいだろう。

**WI’s Jayden Seales Fined for Inappropriate Throw at Yashasvi Jaiswal**

West Indies pacer Jayden Seales has been fined 25% of his match fee by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching its Level 1 Code of Conduct. The incident occurred on Day 1 of the ongoing 2nd Test against India at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Seales also received a demerit point, marking his second within two years—the first was against Bangladesh in December 2024.
### The Incident
The breach happened during the 29th over of India’s first innings. Seales fielded the ball on his follow-through and threw it at Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, hitting him on the pads.
The ICC ruled that Seales violated Article 2.9 of its Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This article prohibits “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”
### Sanction and Hearing
Initially, match referee Andy Pycroft proposed the penalty; however, Seales contested the sanction, leading to a formal hearing. Seales argued that he was attempting to run out Jaiswal.
After reviewing replay footage from multiple angles, the match referee determined that the throw was unnecessary and inappropriate since it hit Jaiswal while the batter was safely within the crease.
### ICC Guidelines on Level 1 Breaches
According to ICC regulations, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum fine of 50% of a player’s match fee, and up to two demerit points.
The charge against Seales was brought forward by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Alex Wharf, and fourth umpire K. N. Ananthapadmanabhan.
### Match Performance
In the first innings, Seales went wicketless as India declared at 518/5 after 134.2 overs. He bowled 22 overs, conceding 88 runs, including two maidens.
Meanwhile, fellow West Indies bowlers Jomel Warrican and captain Roston Chase shared four wickets between them.
