Nick Fuentes and the Groyper challenge to Catholicism

Cupich said that he does not believe the moment has yet come for him to intervene directly and that he would speak publicly only if Fuentes began invoking the church’s authority to legitimize his views. “I think that it would be a real stretch for anyone to make the case that Catholics believe this kind of thing,” Cupich said. “I think that if someone needs to be called out in a public way, especially if they’re using as a basis for their pronouncements their association with the Catholic Church, then I think there would be a moment for me to say something about that. I’ll just continue to watch that.” RELATED: Catholic bishops tied to Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission voice criticism of administration It is not only Catholics who are influenced by Fuentes, but those who follow him, no matter their faith, often speak as if Fuentes’ beliefs, and his willingness to discuss them, override their own faith stands. Jonah, a 28-year-old Orthodox Christian from Tennessee who asked that his last name be withheld for safety concerns, said he discovered Fuentes two years ago through short Instagram clips. Jonah believes that many of Fuentes’ followers aren’t especially religious but said they might still be more inclined to trust Fuentes’ views because of his faith. “A lot of people who follow him are maybe not practicing Christians, but they agree with Christian values and stuff,” Jonah said. “I tend to gravitate to people who share the same faith as I do because you’re standing on more solid ground than if you’re coming at things from a non-Christian perspective.” Asked whether he believes Fuentes is racist or antisemitic, Jonah said no. “I just think there’s a lot of outside influence when it comes to the way that he’s perceived,” he said. “If it was true racism, it would contradict my religious beliefs. I think that he’s genuine, and he comes out of a place of truth. And when it comes to his Christian views, I believe that he’s being authentic.” Aleja McCain-Hertzler contributed to this story.

This Big-Budget Sci-Fi Adaptation of a Classic Video Game Just Hit 88.9 Million Hours in 6 Months

After years of failed attempts, it seems like Hollywood is finally starting to crack the code for adapting video games for movies and television. Not only have game adaptations like The Last of Us and Fallout debut to critical acclaim and sky-high ratings, but other video game projects are in the works, whether it’s The Legend of Zelda movie, a new Street Fighter film, or Mass Effect and God of War shows in the works at Prime Video. One of 2025’s most watched shows is also a video game adaptation, although, ironically, it’s one that was the target of scorn from fans and critics alike. That series is Halo, which at the time of writing has logged 88. 9 million hours of viewing over the past six months. Part of the reason why Halo’s taken off on the streaming charts is that it’s moved to Netflix. A handful of older shows, particularly Friends and Suits, enjoyed what’s called “The Netflix Effect” as older fans rediscover why they loved these shows in the first place, while newer fans get to experience them for the first time. Halo is a completely different beast as it’s a science fiction/military story based on a highly popular video game series. Yet its current reception feels like a much needed win after a long, rocky road to television and a less than favorable reception when it first aired. ‘Halo’ Dealt With Production Problems & Creative Backlash Halo was first slated to hit the silver screen with Peter Jackson attached as a producer, while Guillermo del Toro and Neill Blomkamp were considered as directors. That film never came to life due to a dispute between Universal and 20th Century Fox, eventually leading the Halo rights to go back to Microsoft. Steven Spielberg took up executive producer duties on the Halo TV show, which was meant to play on Showtime. Almost immediately, turmoil surrounded the production. Despite the Halo series being announced in 2013, it wasn’t until 2019 that production actually started moving forward. On top of that, original director Rupert Wyatt departed the series, with Otto Bathurst stepping in to direct and produce. Finally, Halo would switch places with The Man Who Fell To Earth, moving from its home at Showtime to Paramount+. Once Halo premiered, it faced immense scrutiny from fans and critics. Perhaps one of the biggest shakeups is the fact that Master Chief/John-117 (Pablo Schreiber) ends up removing his helmet in the very first episode of the series an action that felt unspeakable to fans, since John remains armored throughout the video games. If that wasn’t enough, John ends up developing a relationship with Makee (Charlie Murphy), a human raised by his enemies the Covenant, to the point where they have sex. Many viewers, and Scrhieber, felt that this scene crossed a line, since Makee was technically a prisoner of war. Things pick up with the second season, which covers the infamous “Fall of Reach” event that kicks off the first Halo game. It also features a more subtle performance from Schrieber, who starts to lean more into Master Chief’s silent but capable role from the games. On top of that, Halo’s exploration of the friction between the United Space Nations Command and other planets, not to mention John’s past life before he became the Master Chief, added plenty of dimension while also making sure that the show wasn’t just copying elements from the game. It’s a strange mix of elements that worked far better than expected, and also makes sense since the show takes place in a different timeline from the games. There Could Be More ‘Halo’ on the Horizon and Netflix Would Be the Perfect Home Despite its second season improving in almost every way, Halo was canceled last year by Paramount+. There’s a silver lining, as Amblin, Xbox and 343 Industries are looking for a potential new home for a third season. With the series having landed on Netflix and receiving immense numbers, it’s only fitting that Netflix should be the new home for Halo. It’s clearly found an audience, and it would continue Netflix’s trend of incredible video game-based television shows. Time will tell if Halo gets a third season, but it’s clear that it’s received a bonus life thanks to its new streaming home. Halo is available to stream on Paramount+ and Netflix.

No More Hangover Blues: 16 Home Remedies That Work

Head pounding and the world spinning these are two things you will notice immediately after you wake up from a night of heavy drinking and partying. Is the pain worth the fun? It would be great if you could just get rid of your hangover quickly. Here are some remedies you can try out. 1. Nap and Water Your body needs to recover from ingesting too much alcohol. The best solution for this is water and a nap. It may seem too simple, but your body will appreciate it. Take a big gulp of water. Then, go back to sleep. 2. Pedialyte and Fast Food Alcohol suppresses vasopressin, a hormone that influences the body’s reabsorption of water. It’s the reason why you feel dehydrated and feel that throbbing in your head. Drinking Pedialyte is the quick solution to this. Top it off with a delicious fast food meal to fill you up to bring energy back to your body. 3. Greasy Food Some can’t eat when hungover, and others find it filling and relaxing. Greasy food like pizzas and burgers are often the top picks for many. While some find it effective, you need to be careful when eating greasy food the morning after heavy drinking. It may upset your stomach and worsen your hangover. 4. Water and Saltines Have you ever tried saltines before? Saltines are square crackers made from flour, yeast, baking soda, and salt. Some suggest that the wheat on the crackers can help absorb the alcohol in your body. It works for some, but others believe that eating saltines will only work before drinking and not the day after. 5. Cheese on Toast A good cheese on toast can work wonders for your hangover. Eating something after drinking too much can at least help you avoid hyperacidity and tummy issues. It’s an easy-to-make meal with the ingredients readily available in your kitchen. 6. Coca-Cola One of the major causes of headaches when you’re hungover is low blood sugar. The sugar rush from a quick gulp of Coke takes care of that. 7. A Bowl of Pho A big and steaming bowl of pho can help manage your hangover. The warm broth easily settles on the stomach. Even if you don’t have an appetite, it goes down well and won’t be difficult to eat, especially when feeling dizzy. 8. A Shot of Espresso If you’re expecting a long day after a night out, a shot of espresso can wake you up in no time. It can boost your alertness, which you will need for a workday. Be careful not to have too much caffeine, though, as it can further dehydrate your body and worsen your hangover. 9. Gatorade Gatorade is an energy drink and is a popular go-to hangover option for a reason. Besides replenishing liquid in your system, the sugar in it can boost your body. 10. A Big Breakfast A big breakfast is perfect if you’re hungry after waking up with a hangover. It solves that squeamish feeling in your stomach. While it may not completely cure your hangover, it is the first step to your body’s recovery. 11. Ibuprofen and Sleep Ibuprofen, like Advil, can help with the pain in your head or stomach that comes with a normal hangover. Sleep after you drink the pain reliever. Make sure not to use the ones with acetaminophen, considering it is incompatible with alcohol and can damage your liver. 12. Cold Shower Get the hangover slump off your body by taking a shower. A cold shower calms your body down. After that, wear your coziest pajamas and have a long nap in your darkened room. 13. Cold Compress If you still feel nauseous, get a cold compress or a wet washcloth and press it over your eyes and mouth. The cold feeling gives you a refreshing feel. Even if it doesn’t get rid of all your hangover symptoms, it can make you feel better. 14. Banana Eat a banana after heavy drinking to replenish the potassium in your body. You can deal with digestive issues from drinking alcohol through the fiber in the fruit. It also contains sugar, which boosts your body to start the day with enough energy. 15. Coconut Water If you have access to coconut water, drink it after a night of alcohol binge. It is one of the most refreshing liquids to cure your hangover. With a high number of electrolytes, it can rehydrate your body faster compared to other liquids. 16. McDonald’s Fries McDonald’s French fries are top-tier, and eating them when you’re hungover can help you deal with the nausea. One bit of advice, get a napkin and take out as much oil and salt from the fries as you can. While the starch can help, the oil and salt can worsen your condition. 10 Things People Learned Way Too Late In Life I recently scrolled the internet’s front page when I saw this question, “What’s something you learned “embarrassingly late” in life?” Here are the top-voted responses.

Trump urges Treasury Secretary Bessent to take Federal Reserve job

By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER and JOSH BOAK WASHINGTON (AP) For the second time in two days, President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would like to appoint Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to chair the Federal Reserve. Yet Bessent keeps saying he doesn’t want the job, Trump added, in comments to the U. S.-Saudi Investment Forum. “We’re thinking about him for the Fed, but he wants no part of it, he likes being secretary of the Treasury,” Trump said. “I think we’ll leave him so let’s cross your name off right, officially, right?” Trump has been sharply critical of the current Fed chair, Jerome Powell, whose term ends in May, for not cutting interest rates quickly enough. Trump’s pick as a replacement will almost certainly push for rapid interest rate cuts and likely institute wide-ranging changes in how the Fed operates. Bessent earlier this year published extensive criticisms of the Fed’s groundbreaking efforts to shore up financial markets and the economy after the 2008-2009 Great Recession and during the pandemic. Bessent is heading up the Trump administration’s search for a new Fed chair. Yet despite his protestations, he is also widely seen as a leading potential replacement for Powell. “He’s a top-tier candidate right now,” Stephen Moore, a senior economic adviser to Trump in his first term, said. Trump “wants to shake things up, so I think he wants an outsider.” Two of the five candidates Bessent has named are current Fed officials: Governors Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman. The other three would fit the outsider criteria: Kevin Hassett, currently a top White House economic official; Kevin Warsh, a former Fed governor who has been highly critical of the Fed; and Rick Rieder, a senior managing director at asset manager BlackRock. Late Tuesday, in an interview By mid-December, “the president will meet the final three candidates and hopefully have an answer before Christmas,” Bessent said. Associated Press Writer Fatima Hussein contributed to this report.

4 Greatest Movies of All Time, According to Pope Leo XIV

Hollywood got a holy spotlight on Saturday, November 15. In an event organized by the Vatican’s culture ministry, Pope Leo XIV gave a special speech on the impact of cinema, both past and present. Pope Leo is the first American-born Pope and was inaugurated on May 18. In attendance at this special event were some of the industry’s leading filmmakers and contributors, including Cate Blanchett, Spike Lee, Adam Scott, Viggo Mortensen, Judd Apatow, and organizers from TIFF and Sundance. Pope Leo had inspiring observations about the performance art of moving pictures, saying, “Entering a cinema is like crossing a threshold. In the darkness and silence, vision becomes sharper, the heart opens up and the mind becomes receptive to things not yet imagined.” He referred to the art form’s advent with pioneers like the Lumière brothers, who invented one of the first motion picture cameras, the Cinématographe. As the cinema celebrates its 130th anniversary, the beautiful blessing and special attention from Pope Leo are the best gifts it could have asked for. If you would like to read his address, it is available online, and you can also watch the footage on YouTube. For this article, we will take a look at the four films Pope Leo specifically mentioned as being his favorites (in no particular order). 4 ‘Ordinary People’ (1980) The only rated R film on the list, Ordinary People, is a drama directed by Robert Redford. The story is deeply profound as it involves the tragic death of the eldest son of a family that struggles to cope afterwards. Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore are phenomenal as the parents, and Timothy Hutton delivers a tour de force performance as the remaining son, Conrad. Judd Hirsch is essential as the psychiatrist Tyrone Berger, and there are many high-stakes scenes within the film. Ordinary People won four Oscars, including the prestigious Best Picture. Redford won for Best Director and Hutton for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Moore was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and her break from comedic performances, which she is most known for, proves she was a versatile and well-rounded actor. Ordinary People is a powerful examination of grief, guilt, and the desperate need for love and affection. As Pope Leo mentioned in his address: “One of cinema’s most valuable contributions is helping audiences consider their own lives, look at the complexity of their experiences with new eyes and examine the world as if for the first time.” 3 ‘The Sound of Music’ (1965) Pope Leo is in good company in choosing The Sound of Music; it was also a favorite of former US President Ronald Reagan. The 1965 Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein musical follows a young woman named Maria (Julie Andrews), who is tasked with caring for the seven children of a widowed naval officer after she struggles to acclimate to life at a convent. Maria had no intention of falling in love with Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). They were almost enemies after she first arrived, with her free-spirited and joyful exuberance clashing with his resolute and disciplined demeanor. As she falls in love with not only Captain von Trapp but also his precious children, they all forge ahead together as a new family, full of love and appreciation for one another. Based on a true story, The Sound of Music is one of the best family movies of the 20th Century. It spent four years in cinemas, breaking records and surpassing the run of Gone with the Wind. It is also one of the only family films ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture to have won. There are truly impactful and resonating themes within the story that make it timeless. Good versus evil, right versus wrong, love versus hate, and many more. Not only does The Sound of Music feature an engaging cast, catchy music, and spectacular filming locations, but it also weaves in subplots about faith, courage, and hope. The nuns in the film play a pivotal role as they hide the von Trapp family and help them escape to safety, harkening back to the days when churches were sanctuaries for those seeking physical safety and political asylum. 2 ‘Life is Beautiful’ (1997) Life is Beautiful seems like a misnomer for a movie about one of the worst human atrocities in history. But it is exactly that unwavering hope and ability to look for the silver lining in the worst of situations that is the magic of the movie. Roberto Benigni stars as Guido, a husband and father who is taken with his young son Giosué (Giorgio Cantarini) to a Nazi concentration camp. In a deeply anguished and painfully exquisite stroke of genius, Guido decides to not only protect his son from the physical horrors around them, but the psychological ones as well. He invents a guise that they are playing a military game, and certain actions get them points, like being quiet and staying hidden. Life is Beautiful was nominated for seven Oscars and won for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Music, Original Dramatic Score, and Benigni won for Best Actor in a Leading Role. He was also nominated for Best Director, and the film was nominated for Best Picture in addition to winning for Best Foreign Language Film. Life is Beautiful has some truly amazing and profound acting moments. It conveys a message of hope and perseverance through the tenderest of lenses, and the precious and touching love of Guido for his son is nothing short of inspiring. It exemplifies the qualities that Pope Leo mentioned of the power of cinema to “rediscover a portion of the hope that is essential for humanity to live to the fullest.” 1 ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ (1946) One of the best movies of the Golden Age of Hollywood, It’s a Wonderful Life, proves that you should be careful what you wish for. George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) wishes he had never been born after reaching the end of his emotional and financial tether. In a unique and specific exercise of power, his guardian angel Clarence (Henry Travers) grants him his wish, and George immediately experiences a world that existed without him. This deliberate exercise teaches George the valuable lesson that he really did have a wonderful life, and how far-reaching a single person is, affecting others’ lives in ways they could never imagine. It’s a Wonderful Life is essential viewing, not just at Christmas, but any time of the year. It is a great example of the enduring quality of cinema. Nearly 80 years later, It’s a Wonderful Life is still as poignant and impactful as ever. Its themes of grace, forgiveness, and redemption are some of the best portrayed on the silver screen. It is also an example that while Hollywood is a lucrative industry, money isn’t everything. It’s a Wonderful Life bombed at the box office, and if you were merely looking at monetary gain, it would have been considered a failure. However, much like the main character, life took an unexpected turn, and success and richness were not measured in dollars, but in emotional influence and truths that resonated so soundly, they still ring true today.
