Marvel’s Deadpool VR review: The merc with an HMD

For a second consecutive year, Oculus Studios has delivered a superhero game as its flagship VR experience for the fall. Last year it was Batman: Arkham Shadow and this year it’s Marvel’s Deadpool VR. The popular Marvel character feels right at home in VR, even if experience is bogged down by the woes of the hardware. Maximum effort Marvel’s Deadpool VR finds the titular antihero on a mission for S. H. I. E. L. D. when he’s forcefully brought in by the villain Mojo to capture other villains for his upcoming reality TV show. It’s the sort of wacky plot synopsis that only Deadpool could get away with. As Deadpool jumps into different areas of the universe, he does battle with villains like Lady Deathstrike and Mephisto. There’s a sense of life to the world of Deadpool VR. Developer Twisted Pixel brings in a lot of lesser-known characters to fill out the roster, which I always appreciate in a game like this. That combined with the various locations really makes it feel like you’re exploring an untouched corner of the Marvel universe. Of course, this is a Deadpool game, and it does not skimp out on the humor and fourth wall breaking. Deadpool is constantly acknowledging the fact that he’s in a video game, that it’s VR, and that he’s being controlled by a human player. He references characters not just from the Marvel pantheon, but pop culture as a whole. I was usually on board with Deadpool’s humor, but it’s a reality of comedy that when you’re constantly firing off jokes, you’re going to have some misses. It also didn’t help that Neil Patrick Harris, who plays Wade Wilson, feels like he’s doing a Ryan Reynolds impersonation most of the time. Your mileage will vary greatly based on how much you love to hear Deadpool crack jokes about anything and everything happening around him. I wore my red pants today VR is a platform where gameplay has to come first, and Deadpool VR provides an excellent playground for chaos. Wade Wilson is equipped with pistols, swords, bombs, and a grappler that he can use in tandem to kill enemies in a plethora of ways. My personal favorite was throwing his swords like daggers, which would then pin enemies to a nearby wall if they were close enough. You can also grab automatic weapons and rifles from defeated enemies or various weapon caches around the world. I’m lucky enough that I don’t struggle with VR sickness, but if you do, Deadpool VR has three settings for you to customize your experience. These settings will tweak locomotion and on-screen movement so that you’re not getting queasy as Wade Wilson falls from great heights or propels himself up using the grapple gun. After playing enough Deadpool VR, you’ll notice that the majority of encounters boil down to you being stuck in a room as waves of enemies enter until you can defeat them all and move on. Combat is fun, but this setup can feel repetitive after a while. There were a few instances where I caught myself hoping that I had just finished the last wave of enemies before I could progress, which isn’t how I should feel in an action game. Still, if you just want to slice some heads, this game should be on your radar. The devs don’t hold back on the blood and gore; you can decapitate and dismember enemies as you fight through hordes of them. Enemies can also destroy your limbs, and you’ll have to wait as Wade’s regenerative powers form baby limbs that grow into adult size. Superhero landing Marvel’s Deadpool VR doesn’t hit the immersive highs as Batman: Arkham Shadows did last year, but it’s still a fun superhero romp from Oculus Studios. The developers at Twisted Pixel make great use of the Deadpool IP, and there’s no shortage of havoc to wreak if you’re just looking for an action-heavy VR experience. This review is based on a code provided by the publisher, played on Meta Quest 3. Marvel’s Deadpool VR is available now for $49. 99 on Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S.

ARC Raiders’ scrappy looting & extraction makes for intense PvE & PvP

Embark Studios is about to release its new rustic sci-fi extraction shooter, **ARC Raiders**, and recently invited journalists, including myself, to join a multiplayer session to get a firsthand look at what the game has to offer.

### A Thrilling Looting System

Playing a pre-release version of ARC Raiders on PC, I was genuinely impressed by the game’s compelling looting mechanics. The system encourages you to loot just enough while weighing your odds and risks. You must choose whether to engage with other players or the environment and then make a daring escape with as much loot as you can carry.

### Setting the Scene: A Ruined World

ARC Raiders is set in a world where the very robots humanity built have turned on their creators, forcing people to live underground. The surface has been decimated and is heavily patrolled by deadly machines programmed to eliminate humans on sight. Yet, despite the danger, the surface holds vital scrap and parts that those living underground desperately need to survive.

To gather these resources, brave scavengers known as Raiders venture to the surface, risking their lives to collect any useful materials and bring them back. But beware—it’s every Raider for themselves. Sharing is rare, and ambushing a greedy stranger could net you better rewards.

### Gameplay Overview

For the preview, I experienced both solo and group play. ARC Raiders is a third-person shooter that drops you into a map populated with loot zones of varying tiers—low, medium, and high. Your mission is to grab the highest-value loot your backpack can hold and race to the escape point.

Standing in your way are hostile humans, robotic enemies, and other Raiders, all competing for the same resources. The game features an in-game proximity voice chat, allowing players to negotiate alliances or betray one another at a moment’s notice. Trust is a risky gamble when anyone can shoot you in the back.

### Intense and Varied Enemies

Robots come in many forms, from small drones scanning the area to formidable foes that appear if you make too much noise. We encountered spider-like, automobile-sized hoppers that could leap great distances, as well as larger floating drones armed with rocket launchers—engaging these was always a last resort.

### Teamwork Options and Escape Routes

If solo play isn’t your style, ARC Raiders supports group play. I joined a trio round where we coordinated our search across multiple regions and gathered some impressive loot before making our escape.

Maps are diverse and offer multiple extraction methods. The standard escape involves activating an elevator that takes about ten seconds to open, during which loud noises attract enemies and rival Raiders alike. Some maps feature keys hidden around the area that unlock alternate exit hatches, providing different tactical options.

Exploring derelict towns, factory districts, and wilderness areas made the maps enjoyable and encouraged strategic looting decisions based on risk versus reward.

### Progression, Crafting, and Risk

Ultimately, loot is the core of ARC Raiders. Regardless of your success, you earn experience points that let you level up and improve your Raider with upgrades to health, looting speed, weapon handling, and more through a robust skill tree.

Back at the hub, you can use gathered loot to progress quests, advance storylines, and improve your crafting and supply lines. However, death in the field means losing everything you carried.

Luckily, crafting lets you quickly replenish your gear with new weapons and personal shield devices. Additionally, there’s a “Free Gun Kit” option that equips you with a random set of gun, shield, and backpack upon respawn, so you can jump back into the fight without worry.

### The High-Stakes Thrill of Extraction

Guns can be upgraded by finding higher-tier weapons and attachments, but losing them due to an untimely death adds a layer of tension. During one run, I amassed a sizable haul only to be ambushed just moments before confirming my escape—a frustrating but exhilarating experience. Of course, successfully pulling off an ambush yourself brings its own rush of excitement.

### Final Impressions

ARC Raiders impressed me with many elements I look for in an extraction shooter. Embark Studios has crafted a solid ecosystem that supports a variety of playstyles. Whether you’re stealthy and cautious or bold and aggressive, the game rewards your approach in meaningful ways.

Good gunplay, diverse maps, and the intense thrill of escaping with valuable loot combine to create an engaging third-person shooter experience. If ARC Raiders resonates with players upon launch, Embark Studios may have a true contender on their hands.

### Release Information

These impressions are based on an early PC build provided by the publisher. ARC Raiders is scheduled for release on **October 30, 2025**, for **PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC**. Keep an eye out for this exciting new extraction shooter.

Battlefield 6 & its RedSec battle royale will share career & battle pass progression

This week, Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios revealed full details about the battle royale segment of Battlefield 6, known as RedSec. This new mode launched as a separate, free-to-play module of Battlefield 6, featuring full cross-progression between the two games.

Cross progression means that most of the progress you make in RedSec will transfer over to Battlefield 6, and vice versa. This allows players to enjoy both modes without the hassle of unlocking the same weapons or attachments twice. Whether you’re advancing in Battlefield 6 or mastering RedSec, your career rank, battle pass rewards, and other unlocks will carry over seamlessly.

Battlefield Studios published a dedicated article that dives deep into the cross progression system. They emphasize that a wide range of items and progress will be shared between Battlefield 6 and RedSec, including:

– **Career Rank**
– **Hardware Unlocks:** Weapons, Gadgets, Throwables, Training Paths
– **Hardware Progression:** Attachments, Vehicle Loadout Items, Camos, Weapon Packages
– **Customization Items:** Soldiers, Soldier Skins, Camos, Charms, Decals, Player Profile Backgrounds, Icons, Dog Tags
– **Badges**
– **Battle Pass Progress**

This interconnected progression system is designed to provide a cohesive and rewarding experience across both Battlefield 6 and RedSec, allowing players to switch between modes without losing their hard-earned progress. Keep an eye out for more updates as both Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios continue to support and expand these exciting Battlefield experiences.

Full Metal Schoolgirl review: The mean streets of production

Sometimes, while just scrolling through the eShop, you come across a game that holds the promise of a life-changing experience. Occasionally, it doesn’t pan out the way you hoped, but you still get a few laughs along the way. That was my experience with Full Metal Schoolgirl, the second game released in October 2025 from former WWE developer—and occasional Earth Defense Force contributor—Yuke’s. While the game bursts with energy and boasts a dynamite sense of humor, its actual gameplay feels deeply undercooked and fails to stand out in an oversaturated genre.

When Even the Work Bots Are Sick of the Boss’ Crap

It’s a shame, because the pitch is perfect for our moment. The world of Full Metal Schoolgirl is dominated by corporate ownership, which has solved a labor crisis with cyborgs: a nearly fully inorganic workforce that cheerfully pushes papers, taps away at computers, and handles whatever other tasks are needed without stopping.

Of course, this has led to all kinds of abuse. Two cyborg ladies, far more colorful than their legions of coworkers, have decided enough is enough. It’s time for revenge.

To defeat the evil CEO of Meternal Jobz, these “Machine Girls” must climb a 100-floor skyscraper, take down the company’s entire management structure, and eventually face off with the man himself.

At first glance, the game may look like low-rent, anime-flavored cheesecake, but Full Metal Schoolgirl is more about chaotic workplace satire than anything else. It’s surprisingly funny—to the point where I favored the dub to fully appreciate all the sad, office culture-filtered whimpering from the enemies I was taking down. The theme song is absolutely unhinged, and pretty much every aspect of the localization is on fire. The world-building flavor of this game is a riot, and I cannot commend the localization team enough.

I was ready to have a blast based on the vibes alone, but unfortunately, I ended up desperately wishing this premise was attached to a better game.

Railroaded Roguelike

Full Metal Schoolgirl is a roguelike—because in this world, everything has to be a roguelike, as if decreed by some unwritten video game law. I’m exaggerating, of course, but in a world that now includes Ninja Gaiden 4, it would be nice to have a little more balance.

That’s not this game’s fault, but what is its fault is its unapologetically generic and dull progression structure. If you jump into this after playing something like Hades, you’ll find yourself wondering when you tripped and fell into a time machine.

Between runs, you collect resources and spend them to make your numbers go up. As your numbers increase, you’re better equipped to survive boss encounters, which then let you push the level numbers higher too. That’s it—no frills, no surprises.

There are a few new abilities you unlock along the way, but they hardly change the core gameplay and feel more like tutorialized gatekeeping than actual variety.

To make matters worse, the action mechanics are painfully simple and seldom change. You get a few basic physical attack strings and weapons that behave in textbook fashion. Everything else you find are passive modifiers impacting your stats in small ways—like stamina regeneration speed or slight changes to maximum HP. Weapons appear between rooms but don’t add or subtract from the game experience beyond number adjustments.

It’s the bare minimum of roguelike design—something the genre has long since surpassed through new ideas, mashups, and more complicated mechanics.

Brainless Battling

What Full Metal Schoolgirl most reminds me of are user-made roguelike rooms or islands in Fortnite. You have a lobby housing all the different weapons you can snag to start with, floating there for you. Then, you go through the motions—fighting unchanging, generic enemies using basic, uncomplicated mechanics—just to return to the beginning and make your numbers go higher so you can muscle your way a bit further down the line.

But unlike games with battle passes where you pay extra cash to grind toward unlocking a character like Scooby-Doo or a cheeseburger with legs, here you’re just doing it because that’s what’s on the menu.

I had a lot of hope going into Full Metal Schoolgirl. My pitch for this review was simple: “Hello, I would like to play this because it looks insane.” It seemed like some fun silliness to indulge in, and as it got started, the promise of a cathartic, satirical takedown of our soon-to-be-apocalyptic real-life labor structures had me ready for something special.

Then the dreaded Loop kicked in, and I realized I was in for several hours of grinding and bland, chicken-coded combat.

So it goes.

Full Metal Schoolgirl is available October 23, 2025, for PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5. A Switch 2 code was provided by the publisher for this review.
