Two Boston College students were injured at a house party in Brighton last weekend after a piece of deck railing broke off, causing the pair to fall from the second floor, police said.

On Saturday evening, Boston police responded to a “serious injury” incident at 64 Undine Road, according to the department. Upon arrival, officers found a man and a woman receiving medical attention from first responders.

Prior to the incident, a small party was held in the backyard of the home where attendees were reportedly consuming alcoholic beverages and smoking. All individuals involved were Boston College students, the incident report confirmed.

The deck, located on the second floor of the home, has ten steps connecting the backyard to the kitchen. Throughout the event, students frequently used the deck to retrieve food and beer from the kitchen.

At the time of the incident, the two victims were conversing and holding drinks on the deck when they leaned against the railing. Suddenly, a large section of the railing, estimated to be six to eight feet long, snapped off without warning. This caused the students to lose their balance and fall onto the concrete below.

Both students landed on the back of their heads and spines with significant force. The man suffered a head injury and was bleeding slightly. He later experienced considerable pain in his back and neck. The incident report did not provide an update on the woman’s condition.

Officers inspected the railing and parts of the deck, noticing rotting wood and short, corroded nails. The wood appeared to have been painted over, which may have concealed the extent of the damage.

The two victims were transported to local hospitals for further evaluation and treatment. A city inspector also arrived at the scene to assess the safety of the building.

The incident remains under ongoing investigation.
