2 Boston College students injured in deck collapse during off-campus party

Two Boston College students were injured at a house party in Brighton last weekend after a piece of deck railing broke off, causing the pair to fall from the second floor, police said.

On Saturday evening, Boston police responded to a “serious injury” incident at 64 Undine Road, according to the department. Upon arrival, officers found a man and a woman receiving medical attention from first responders.

Prior to the incident, a small party was held in the backyard of the home where attendees were reportedly consuming alcoholic beverages and smoking. All individuals involved were Boston College students, the incident report confirmed.

The deck, located on the second floor of the home, has ten steps connecting the backyard to the kitchen. Throughout the event, students frequently used the deck to retrieve food and beer from the kitchen.

At the time of the incident, the two victims were conversing and holding drinks on the deck when they leaned against the railing. Suddenly, a large section of the railing, estimated to be six to eight feet long, snapped off without warning. This caused the students to lose their balance and fall onto the concrete below.

Both students landed on the back of their heads and spines with significant force. The man suffered a head injury and was bleeding slightly. He later experienced considerable pain in his back and neck. The incident report did not provide an update on the woman’s condition.

Officers inspected the railing and parts of the deck, noticing rotting wood and short, corroded nails. The wood appeared to have been painted over, which may have concealed the extent of the damage.

The two victims were transported to local hospitals for further evaluation and treatment. A city inspector also arrived at the scene to assess the safety of the building.

The incident remains under ongoing investigation.

Toddler was on a Long Beach sidewalk when car sped backward over curb, killing her. Man arrested

A toddler was killed and two others—a young girl and a woman—were injured when a man driving in reverse careened onto a Long Beach sidewalk, according to authorities.

The crash occurred Monday in the 400 block of Maine Avenue, the Long Beach Police Department reported. Officials believe the driver of a 2013 Chevy Captiva was making a turn when the vehicle suddenly reversed at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then went off the roadway, onto the sidewalk, and struck three pedestrians.

Police were called to the scene at 11:27 a.m., where they found a 45-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl injured, along with a 20-month-old toddler who later died. The toddler was identified by the Los Angeles County medical examiner as Myrah Hunter.

After the collision, Long Beach police officers provided lifesaving measures and, without waiting for paramedics, rushed the toddler to a hospital in an effort to save her. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the hospital, authorities said in a statement.

The Long Beach Fire Department transported the injured woman and the 12-year-old girl to a nearby hospital, where both were reported to be in stable condition.

The driver of the Captiva was identified as Lamont Ivan Russell. Police stated that Russell remained at the scene after the crash and was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, vehicular manslaughter, and misdemeanor battery.

Russell is currently being held in Los Angeles County jail on $335,000 bail, according to jail records.

Authorities believe alcohol, speeding, and distracted driving were factors in the tragic incident. Investigations are ongoing.

Bodies of all 9 missing skiers in deadly California avalanche have been recovered, authorities say

TRUCKEE, Calif Crews recovered the bodies of nine backcountry skiers who were killed in a California avalanche four days ago, authorities said Saturday, concluding a harrowing operation hindered by intense snowfall. A search team reached the bodies of eight victims and found one other who had been missing and presumed dead since Tuesday’s avalanche on Castle Peak near Lake Tahoe. The ninth person who was missing was found “relatively close” to the other victims, but it was impossible to see them because there were white-out conditions on Tuesday when the others were located. The recovery efforts had been put on hold for several days because of heavy snow and the threat of more avalanches. Helicopters with the California National Guard and California Highway Patrol recovered the bodies on Saturday morning by hoisting them from the mountain and bringing them to nearby snowcats trucks outfitted for transportation on the snow. Officials said on Friday that they were using water to break up the snow in the area as avalanche mitigation work, a technique that is designed to intentionally release unstable snowpack to reduce the risk when rescue crews go in. The mitigation and search efforts have included California Highway Patrol air operations, Nevada County Sheriff’s search and rescue, Tahoe Nordic search and rescue, the utility company Pacific Gas & Electric, the Sierra avalanche center and others. Coast Guard searching for survivors after commercial fishing boat sinks off Massachusetts; 1 body recovered

The U.S. Coast Guard is urgently searching Massachusetts waters for survivors after a commercial fishing vessel carrying seven people, including a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) observer, sank on Friday approximately 25 miles off the coast of Cape Ann.

Coast Guard watchstanders received an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) alert at about 6:50 a.m. local time, registered to the 72-foot commercial fishing vessel Lily Jean. After attempts to contact the boat failed, the Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast (UMIB).

Responding to the distress signal, the USCG Northeast District deployed an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod and a small boat crew from Station Gloucester to search the area. Additionally, the Coast Guard Cutter Thunder Bay was diverted to assist in the search efforts.

Rescue crews discovered debris near the location where the EPIRB was activated, along with a body and an unoccupied life raft. The Coast Guard confirmed that search and rescue operations will continue.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her sorrow over the tragedy and affirmed the state’s full support. In a statement, she said, “I’m heartbroken over the devastating news out of Gloucester about the sinking of the Lily Jean and have offered our full support to Mayor Lundberg, Harbormaster Lucido, and the Coast Guard. I am praying for the crew, and my heart goes out to their loved ones and all Gloucester fishing families during this awful time.”

Governor Healey emphasized the importance of fishermen and fishing vessels to the history, economy, and culture of Gloucester and Cape Ann, noting that this tragedy is deeply felt across the state.

The boat’s captain, Gus Sanfilippo, and his crew were previously featured in a 2012 episode of the History Channel show *Nor’Easter Men*, which highlighted a fishing expedition in hazardous weather conditions. Sanfilippo, a fifth-generation commercial fisherman, specialized in haddock, lobster, and flounder fishing.

Senator Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, who is a friend of the missing captain, also commented on the situation as search efforts continue.

The Coast Guard and local authorities remain committed to locating survivors and providing support to the families affected by this tragic incident.

At Least One Person Trapped After Vehicle Overturns On Sierra Highway

At least one person was trapped Thursday afternoon after a vehicle went off the roadway and overturned onto its roof near Sierra Highway and Davenport Road in Santa Clarita, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) logs.

The crash was reported just before 4 p.m., when callers informed CHP that a dark-colored pickup truck had overturned and landed on its roof. Officials said the vehicle traveled through a field, broke through a fence, and ultimately came to rest in a ditch.

CHP logs indicate the male driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle after experiencing brake issues.

“The patient was flown to Henry Mayo in critical condition,” said Capt. Brian Kight, Public Information Officer for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Bystanders were seen attempting to assist the driver out of the overturned vehicle before emergency responders arrived, according to initial reports. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Gas station employee killed by Parker police after brandishing gun, agency says

A gas station employee was shot and killed by Parker police on Monday night after brandishing a gun at officers who were responding to calls about shots fired, officials said.

Officers responded to the area of Jordan Road and Mainstreet at around 10:20 p.m. after residents called 911 reporting gunfire, the Parker Police Department said in a news release Tuesday. Upon arrival, officers found shell casings and live ammunition in the parking lot of the T Square gas station located at 17050 E. Mainstreet.

The officers spoke with a gas station employee, who initially claimed to have witnessed the shooting. Police attempted to convince the man to surrender peacefully. However, the 32-year-old employee grabbed a gun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers, prompting them to open fire.

Officers immediately started medical aid, but the man later died at the hospital. No officers were injured during the incident. Six officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.

The 23rd Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is currently investigating the shooting.

‘Subway surfing’ blamed for deaths of 2 teen girls

**Two Teenage Girls Found Dead Atop Brooklyn Subway Train in Suspected Subway Surfing Incident**

NEW YORK — Police found two teenage girls dead atop a train car at a Brooklyn subway station early on October 4. Authorities say the deaths are likely related to subway surfing, a dangerous trend that involves climbing on top of moving train cars.

At approximately 3:10 a.m., New York City police officers responded to a 911 call at the Marcy Avenue subway station. Upon arrival, officers discovered two unidentified girls unconscious and unresponsive on top of a J train. According to local news reports, the train had just crossed the Williamsburg Bridge from Manhattan into Brooklyn. First responders pronounced both girls dead at the scene, the NYPD confirmed.

Identification of the girls is pending, with families being notified, officials added. The investigation is ongoing, including a review of any relevant social media posts leading up to the incident.

A partial suspension of train service between lower Manhattan and Brooklyn occurred as authorities managed the response.

Demetrius Crichlow, president of New York City Transit, expressed heartbreak over the tragedy. “It’s heartbreaking that two young girls are gone because they somehow thought riding outside a subway train was an acceptable game,” he said in a statement. Crichlow urged parents, teachers, and friends to be clear with loved ones: “Getting on top of a subway car isn’t ‘surfing’ — it’s suicide.”

The trend of subway surfing has surfaced on social media, with some individuals filming and sharing the dangerous stunt. This recent tragedy is not isolated; The New York Daily News reported that just hours earlier on October 3, a 14-year-old boy was hospitalized after falling from the top of a Manhattan-bound 7 train in Queens.

Subway surfing has raised significant concerns among city officials due to the resulting injuries and fatalities among youth. The NYPD began tracking subway surfing in 2022 when the trend first emerged. According to NYPD data, at least three people died due to subway surfing in 2025. In 2024, six deaths were reported, and five people died from the activity in 2023.

In response, city and state officials launched a public information campaign in 2023 titled *Subway Surfing Kills: Ride Inside, Stay Alive*, aiming to deter youth from engaging in the dangerous behavior. Additionally, New York City has filed lawsuits against five social media companies, citing harm to youth mental health and highlighting subway surfing as a key example.

The NYPD has also deployed drones to monitor subway lines, while the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has partnered with social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram to remove videos depicting individuals riding outside of trains. Through June 2025, the MTA reported over 1,800 such videos had been taken down.

Subway stations regularly broadcast announcements warning against subway surfing. Recently, Bronx native and rapper Cardi B lent her voice to public service announcements aimed at promoting subway safety.

Cathell, a South Philadelphia High School graduate and former hospitality professional according to social media, died Friday evening at Lankenau Medical Center.
