Israel strikes Gaza after it says Hamas attacked across ceasefire line

**Israel Strikes Targets in Gaza Amid First Test of U.S.-Brokered Ceasefire**

*TEL AVIV, Israel* — Israel struck targets in the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday after reporting that its troops came under fire from Hamas militants. This marked the first major test of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire aimed at halting more than two years of war.

According to the Israeli military, members of the Palestinian group used an RPG against Israeli forces, prompting airstrikes and artillery responses. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held consultations with security officials and directed the military to take “strong action” against any ceasefire violations. However, he did not threaten to escalate back to full war.

Hamas denied involvement in the clashes in Rafah, located in southern Gaza.

### Hostage Remains Identified as Ceasefire Talks Advance

The strikes coincided with Israel identifying the remains of two hostages released by Hamas overnight. The Palestinian group also announced the initiation of talks to launch the second phase of ceasefire negotiations.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office confirmed the bodies were those of Ronen Engel, a father of three from Kibbutz Nir Oz, and Sonthaya Oakkharasri, a Thai agricultural worker killed at Kibbutz Be’eri. Both had been believed killed during the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, and their bodies were taken to Gaza.

Notably, Engel’s wife, Karina, and two of their three children were kidnapped during the attack but released in a November 2023 ceasefire agreement.

### Rafah Border Crossing Remains Closed Amid Hostage Remains Dispute

Israel announced it would keep the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt closed “until further notice.” Netanyahu’s office stated that reopening Rafah hinges on Hamas fulfilling its ceasefire obligations, including returning the remains of all 28 deceased hostages.

In the past week, Hamas has handed over the remains of 13 bodies, 12 identified as hostages. Israel noted one released body did not belong to a hostage.

Meanwhile, Israel has returned 150 Palestinian bodies to Gaza, including 15 on Sunday, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. The ministry posted photos of dozens of bodies online to assist families searching for loved ones. Many of the bodies were decomposed, blackened, and some lacked limbs and teeth. Only 25 have been identified so far.

### Ongoing Negotiations and Ceasefire Challenges

Following an exchange involving 20 living hostages for more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners and detainees, the handover of deceased hostages’ remains and prisoners remains a critical issue in the ceasefire’s first stage.

Another key issue involves scaling up humanitarian aid and reopening the Rafah border crossing to facilitate aid delivery and the movement of people.

Future ceasefire stages will focus on disarming Hamas, Israeli withdrawal from additional Gaza areas, and the establishment of governance for the devastated territory.

### Ceasefire Clashes in Rafah

On Sunday, the Israeli military reported militants fired at troops in Rafah, within Israeli-controlled areas as per the ceasefire lines. No injuries were reported.

Hamas denied involvement. Both sides have accused each other of ceasefire violations amid ongoing tensions.

Hamas spokesman Hazem Kassem said that negotiations for the second phase have begun but require national consensus. He added that Hamas has started discussions to solidify its positions but offered no further details.

In line with U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan, future talks will include disarming Hamas and establishing an internationally backed authority to govern Gaza. Kassem emphasized Hamas will not participate in the future ruling authority.

He noted that Hamas-run government bodies continue day-to-day governance to avoid a power vacuum, which he described as “very dangerous.” Kassem called for establishing a Community Support Committee composed of Palestinian technocrats to manage affairs until an administrative committee representing all factions is formed.

### Status of Rafah Border Crossing

Israel again kept the Rafah crossing closed on Sunday to pressure Hamas for the return of more hostages’ bodies. While Hamas claims it needs special equipment to locate additional remains, Israel believes Hamas has access to more bodies than it has returned.

Before the war, Rafah was the only crossing not controlled by Israel. It has remained closed since May 2024, when Israel took control of the Gaza side.

Reopening the crossing fully would allow Palestinians access to medical treatment, travel, and visits to family in Egypt, where tens of thousands of Palestinians reside.

The Palestinian Authority’s Interior Ministry in Ramallah announced new procedures for Palestinians wishing to use the crossing. Palestinian Embassy staff from Cairo will issue temporary travel documents for those exiting Gaza. Those entering Gaza must apply at the embassy in Cairo for entry documents.

### Casualty Figures and Conflict Overview

The Israel-Hamas war has reportedly killed more than 68,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. U.N. agencies and independent experts view these figures as reliable; however, Israel disputes the numbers and has not provided its own toll.

Thousands more remain missing, the Red Cross reports.

Hamas militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 during the October 7 attack that ignited the war.

### Hamas Rejects U.S. Claims of Planned Attack

On Sunday, Hamas rejected a U.S. State Department claim alleging credible reports of an imminent planned Hamas attack on Gaza residents.

The U.S. statement warned such an attack would violate the ceasefire and undermine mediation progress.

Hamas called the claim “false allegations,” accused Israel of supporting armed groups in Israeli-controlled areas, and urged the U.S. to pressure Israel to halt such support.

Fighting has erupted between Hamas-led fighters and at least two armed groups in eastern Gaza City accused of looting aid and collaborating with Israel. Hamas has publicly executed several suspects, drawing widespread condemnation.

The Hamas-run Interior Ministry said its forces are working to restore law and order in areas vacated by Israel following the ceasefire.

Thieves strike Louvre in brazen jewel heist as the world’s most visited museum shuts

PARIS — In a brazen, seven-minute strike, thieves used a basket lift to reach the Louvre on Sunday morning. As tourists were already inside, they forced a window, smashed display cases, and fled with jewels of “inestimable value,” France’s interior minister said.

Inside The Shockingly Pain Free Making Of A New Adult Swim Classic

To the casual viewer, Adult Swim might just seem like the playground of *Rick and Morty*, a repository for beloved animated reruns, or the birthplace of pop culture relics only understood as meme characters by younger generations. But for those tuned to a stranger frequency—the real heads and Sickos—Adult Swim is something far more exciting: a creative fault line where the wacky, the wild, and the wildly original still erupt without warning.

It’s one of the last arenas on television where sheer imaginative chaos is celebrated. Many of the best Adult Swim shows resemble the kind of unfiltered creativity that might as well have oozed right out of the primordial soup and stumbled in front of a television camera, making it hard to imagine these shows going through a traditional development process.

After Joe Cappa’s animated short *Ghost Dogs* premiered at Sundance in 2021, he dove headfirst into making odd, wonderful videos for social media. Some, like the viral “Scooby Doo Shuffle,” “Dino Girl,” and his bizarre *Coupla Boys*, caught fire online, landing him gigs with Giphy and Bento Box. But it was *The Gabbagooblins*, a warped fever dream that exploded on TikTok, that really turned heads—especially at Adult Swim.

The network wasted no time commissioning a follow-up for their cult-favorite *Off the Air*, curated by Dave Hughes (also the brains behind *Adult Swim SMALLS*). Now that he was officially in the system, so to speak, Cappa pitched a strangely restorative *SMALLS* project about three jacked brothers who are innocently obsessed with their widowed dad. Thus, *HAHA, You Clowns* was born.

Fans devoured the 2-3 minute shorts, and now it’s a full-fledged series. I caught up with Cappa to talk about bringing *HAHA, You Clowns* to the big leagues, and what fuels his hilariously specific brand of comedy.

### Challenging Animation Industry Norms

The animation industry has been overwhelmingly homogenized in recent years, with many falsely believing that animation is a medium solely for children, or that adult animation can only resemble something like *The Simpsons* or *South Park*. There is plenty of incredible subversive, transgressive, and downright weird animation produced every day, but seeing it platformed by a major studio, network, or streamer remains rare.

“Adult Swim is definitely like the coolest, most chill, laid-back network to work for,” Joe Cappa tells me. “They have been very, not to say hands-off, but encouraging of artists and encouraging of me. They’ve been patient, and they really trust their artists, and I just can’t imagine this show living anywhere else but Adult Swim.”

### Embracing Wholesomeness in Comedy

When Cappa first started making short videos, he realized he communicated comedy differently. People quickly latched onto the wholesomeness of the characters, something that encouraged him. As he puts it, “This show is leaning into the wholesomeness, I guess, and just kind of embracing it. It’s still tongue-in-cheek, it’s overly sappy, but the characters really are like, genuine people.”

Audiences have become so accustomed to mean-spirited, almost humiliation-based styles of comedy dominating the last decade that whenever *HAHA, You Clowns* zags toward sincerity, the biggest laughs come from how unexpected it is to not take the easy route into cruelty.

“They sort of lack self-awareness, but they don’t really care, you know?” Cappa says of the brother characters, Tristan, Preston, and Duncan. “They could be laughed at, and it probably wouldn’t bother them too much, because all they care about is everybody having a good time and being nice to one another.”

*HAHA, You Clowns* is about three brothers and their dad, finding hilarity in relatability — like family movie nights, leaving your coat at the restaurant, and going on vacation.

### From Shorts to Full-Length Episodes

The original *SMALLS* shorts ran about two minutes, but the new series expands that runtime to 11 minutes. Not every short is meant to be longer than a few minutes, but Cappa had no problem writing longer adventures for these boys.

“Shockingly, it was very easy, and my co-writer on the show is my brother, so we have this sort of shared sense of humor and shared knowledge of our father, of the Midwest, of our brotherly love to each other,” he explains.

He continues, “So I think we kind of feed into that, and I mean, these scripts that we end up writing could be half an hour, and we have to like start trimming because we’re like, ‘Damn, we got to fit all this in 11 minutes.’ I think we could just keep writing and writing these characters. It comes very naturally, and it’s a very fun place to live inside their minds.”

### Midwestern Roots and Real-Life Inspiration

The characterizations are inspired by Cappa’s life in the Midwest and the kind of people he was used to interacting with. As a fellow Midwesterner, I can confirm that the boys are the same brand of corn-fed, farm-strong himbos with necks as thick as their hearts that I knew, too.

“This show and the stuff I make, inherently, is reactionary to the stuff that I see out there, because I haven’t been in a movie theater and laughed in a very, very long time, and it’s very frustrating,” Cappa says. “I find it rewarding to surprise my audience.”

### Redefining Adult Animation

Some people think of “adult animation” as raunchy or violent comedies that happen to be animated. However, adult animation is as diverse and expansive as can be imagined. *HAHA, You Clowns* is an adult animated comedy series that stands out by taking a totally different approach to humor.

“It’s 2025 and like, the world feels very crazy right now,” Cappa correctly recognizes. “It doesn’t hurt to laugh at people trying to be sweet and have a good time, and it’s not mean-spirited. We can all have a good time watching it.”

The writing is packed with one-liners, but plenty of laughs come from moments when the characters aren’t saying anything at all.

“The animatic phase is the most fun phase of creating a show I’ve discovered,” Cappa shares. In one episode, a notable celebrity makes a cameo, and there’s a shot that lingers on their face, underscored with a music cue by Delicate Steve inspired by the guitar riffs of ’90s sitcoms.

“Seeing those together at the same time, I was like, ‘We have to just hold on to [the] face so we can hear the complete sting sustain,’” Cappa says through laughter. It’s a seemingly small decision but one that caused one of the biggest laughs.

This approach also helps *HAHA, You Clowns* resemble a show more like *7th Heaven* than something like *Family Guy*, which is exactly what Cappa was aiming for.

“That’s a big part of the humor, too,” he says. “We would tell our artists that it’s like a live-action director was given an animated show, and they don’t really know how to draw, but they’re trying to execute the thing as best as they can, and that’s sort of like the genre of humor to play.”

*HAHA, You Clowns* feels like the alternate reality of *Full House* if Danny Tanner was raising three boys, or *Home Improvement* if Tim was a widower, balancing its silliness and saccharine center with occasional profundity.

### A Personal Connection

Cappa’s voice is unquestionably present in the show’s characters — literally, as he voices the four main characters himself. He admits there’s a little piece of himself in all of them:

“Duncan is the youngest one, and he wants to impress his brothers. Tristan is the middle one, and I am a middle child. He’s also the one who wants to get into comedy, and that’s kind of his love language. And then there’s Preston, who is the leader and tries to get the thing done and tries to please Dad. He’s like the most in tune with Dad. I don’t know, I guess I’m a little bit of all of them.”

### Heartfelt Humor Set to a ’90s Sitcom Soundtrack

An offbeat comedy about brotherhood, family, and grief, set to a soundtrack that sounds like it was lifted from a forgotten ’90s sitcom—used both sincerely and ironically—*HAHA, You Clowns* manages to toe the line between heartfelt and ridiculous without falling completely into either, which feels like the point.

“In a way, I would say I’m a proud dad,” Cappa says. “And I hope they’re proud of me too.”

If there’s any justice left in animation, more people will realize Cappa is one of the most interesting figures working today. He did such a great job raising those boys that *HAHA, You Clowns* is primed to be Adult Swim’s next classic series.

The full series of *HAHA, You Clowns* debuts on October 19, 2025, at 11:45 pm ET/PT, but the debut episode is currently available on YouTube.

Earth’s magnetic shield is weakening over the Atlantic, scientists warn

Scientists have discovered that a weak spot in Earth’s magnetic field—known as the South Atlantic Anomaly—is continuing to grow. Using 11 years of precise data from the European Space Agency’s Swarm satellite mission, researchers found that this region, which stretches over South America and the South Atlantic Ocean, has expanded by an area almost half the size of continental Europe since 2014.

Earth’s magnetic field acts as an invisible shield that protects life from harmful cosmic rays and solar radiation. It is generated deep inside the planet by swirling molten iron in the outer core, around 3,000 kilometers below the surface. This motion produces electric currents, which in turn create Earth’s magnetic field. The system is constantly shifting, strengthening in some places and weakening in others.

The Swarm mission—made up of three identical satellites launched in 2013—has provided scientists with the most detailed and long-lasting record of magnetic field changes ever captured from space. By studying magnetic signals coming from Earth’s core, crust, oceans, and atmosphere, the mission helps researchers understand how our planet’s protective shield is evolving.

The South Atlantic Anomaly was first identified in the 19th century, but recent Swarm data show that it is expanding faster than ever. The anomaly is particularly important for space missions, as satellites passing through it are exposed to stronger radiation that can disrupt electronics, damage hardware, or cause temporary blackouts.

According to Professor Chris Finlay of the Technical University of Denmark, the weakening magnetic field is not uniform. “The South Atlantic Anomaly is not just one big block,” he explains. “It’s behaving differently in different areas. The field is weakening much faster toward Africa than near South America.”

This uneven weakening is linked to unusual magnetic patterns deep below the surface, at the boundary between Earth’s molten outer core and its rocky mantle. Normally, magnetic field lines flow outward from the southern hemisphere, but in the South Atlantic Anomaly, some lines are reversed and flow back into the core. Swarm’s data show one of these reversed regions slowly drifting westward beneath Africa, contributing to the growing weakness of the field there.

While the magnetic field weakens in the South Atlantic, other areas are changing in different ways. In the northern hemisphere, the field has strengthened over Siberia but weakened over Canada, shifting the position of the magnetic north pole toward Russia. This movement has implications for navigation systems that rely on magnetic field maps.

Despite these changes, scientists emphasize that Earth’s magnetic field is far from collapsing. “Swarm is giving us the big picture of our planet’s dynamic heart,” says Anja Stromme, ESA’s Swarm Mission Manager. “The satellites are still healthy and providing excellent data, helping us better understand our ever-changing planet—and how it protects us.”
