Docs On Movies: ‘Chain Reactions’ Honors ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ With Stephen King & Mike Figgis’ Close Up Of Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’ – Specialty Preview

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Megalopolis get the documentary treatment, as does the inner world of Ye, in this end-of-summer indie weekend with a sprinkling of dramas and comedies.

Dark Sky Films opens *Chain Reactions* by Alexandre O. Philippe, an acclaimed documentary examining the profound impact and lasting influence of *The Texas Chainsaw Massacre*. The film features discussions with five artists: Stephen King, Patton Oswalt, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, and Karyn Kusama. It debuts today in New York (Regal Union Square), Los Angeles (Laemmle NoHo), with San Francisco’s Roxie theater screening next week. The release will expand throughout October.

Dark Sky also holds the rights to Tobe Hooper’s original 1974 shocker, and theaters are pairing the two films. *Chain Reactions* premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year, winning the Venice Classics Award for Best Documentary on Cinema. It boasts a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes from 27 reviews. For more insight, see Deadline’s interview with Philippe from the Venice premiere.

Following its premieres at Venice and Telluride, Utopia is opening *Megadoc*, a documentary directed by Mike Figgis about the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s *Megalopolis*. Screening on around 40 screens, including Angelika in NYC, Landmark Sunset in LA, Roxie in San Francisco, and AFI Silver in Washington DC/Maryland, this fly-on-the-wall doc captures Coppola’s decades-long journey creating his self-financed passion project that debuted at Cannes in 2024 and saw a theatrical release that fall.

Figgis’ real-time portrait weaves together archival materials, candid cast interviews, and an intimate look at how Coppola drew from Roman history, political allegory, and his own singular vision to shape the world of *Megalopolis*.

Also opening wide, *In Whose Name?* by Nicolas Ballesteros launches on about 1,000 screens in partnership with AMC, Regal, and Cinemark. Ballesteros began filming Kanye West, now known as Ye, at age 18 just after high school. Over six years and thousands of hours of footage, the documentary follows West through a storm of music, fashion, and faith—covering his bipolar diagnosis, collapsing marriage to Kim Kardashian, sponsorship losses, and growing public backlash over his polarizing billion-dollar brand and persona. The film is produced by ASMI Entertainment, with Simran A. Singh producing and Nick Jarjour and Amy A. Singh executive producing.

Magnolia Pictures opens *Plainclothes*, the Special Jury Award winner for Ensemble Cast at its Sundance premiere, at the IFC Center in NYC. Writer-director Carmen Emmi and cast members Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey will participate in Q&As throughout the weekend.

Set in Syracuse in the 1990s, the film stars Blyth as a police officer tasked with arresting men in public bathrooms. He becomes entangled with one of his targets (Tovey) in a story that blends love, self-discovery, and nostalgia for a time before smartphones and dating apps. *Plainclothes* currently holds an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 46 reviews.

Vietnamese audiences are flocking to *Lat Mat 8: Vong Tay Nang* (“The 8th installment”), a domestic hit that has earned $8.8 million and ranks among the top five highest-grossing films in Vietnam this year, following record-breaking advance ticket sales and opening at number one at the local box office.

Set against the golden sand dunes of Ninh Thuan province, the film explores family strife when a son’s dream to follow his own path of dance conflicts with his father’s wishes. The franchise marks its 10-year anniversary with this latest entry. Director Ly Hai’s previous film, *Face Off 7: One Wish*, is Vietnam’s third highest-grossing film of all time.

Blue Fox Entertainment opens the sci-fi family adventure *Xeno* on 306 screens. Written and directed by Matthew Loren, and produced by Kevin Hart and his company Hartbeat in association with Tabooma, the film follows a teenage outsider who forms a powerful bond with a terrifying alien after a chance encounter in the desert. This adventure questions the nature of good and evil. The cast includes Lulu Wilson, Omari Hardwick, Trae Romano, Wrenn Schmidt, Paul Schneider, and Garrett van der Leun.

Film Movement releases *My Sunshine*, a coming-of-age drama written and directed by Hiroshi Okuyama, at the Quad Cinema in NYC. Premiering at Cannes 2024, the film follows young Takuya on the Japanese island of Hokkaido during winter. A self-described worst player on his ice hockey team, Takuya becomes captivated by figure skaters on the same rink, especially rising star Sakura from Tokyo.

Music Box Films opens *The Summer Book*, director Charlie McDowell’s film adaptation of Tove Jansson’s novel of the same name, starring Glenn Close, at the Angelika Film Center in NYC. The meditative portrayal of grief and intergenerational bonds between nine-year-old Sophia and her grandmother premiered last year at BFI London and continued screening at AFI Film Festival, Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and the Miami Film Festival.

The distributor’s second release is *Code 3*, which follows Maya (Singh), a 30-year-old software engineer from a conservative Indian family. By day, she works on a teen-focused app; by night, she moonlights as a high school substitute teacher. When unexpectedly assigned to teach sex education, despite having never had sex herself, chaos and comedy ensue. The film premiered at SXSW 2024.

In genre-bending territory, a melancholic sci-fi romance directed by Messina, who previously collaborated with Paolo Sorrentino on the Oscar-winning *The Great Beauty*, premiered in competition at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival.

Level 33 debuts *Queen of Manhattan*, a biopic on legendary Latin adult film icon Vanessa Del Rio, opening at 20+ AMC theaters. Written and directed by Thomas Mignone, the film is set against the backdrop of organized crime-controlled Times Square in the 1970s and 80s. Starring Esai Morales, it explores Del Rio’s groundbreaking career spanning over 21 years and 200 films, alongside her activism advocating for sex workers’ rights. The film premiered in 2022 at the Dances With Films festival.

This weekend’s indie slate offers a diverse collection of documentaries, dramas, comedies, and genre films, providing something compelling for cinephiles as summer winds down. Stay tuned for upcoming screenings and expand your cinematic horizons with these remarkable titles.

Jaden Smith named Christian Louboutin’s men’s artistic director

**Jaden Smith Named Christian Louboutin’s Men’s Artistic Director**

*By Apoorva Rastogi | September 18, 2025, 5:08 PM*

Hollywood actor and musician Jaden Smith has been appointed as the first-ever artistic director for Christian Louboutin’s men’s line. At 27 years old, Smith will now oversee the creation of four collections annually, encompassing men’s shoes, leather goods, and accessories.

This marks a significant milestone for Smith, who previously founded his own brand, MSFTSrep, and collaborated with sneaker company New Balance. However, this is his first time leading an entire line at a luxury fashion house.

**Why Jaden?**

Christian Louboutin, the 62-year-old founder of the iconic French luxury brand, shared his reasoning behind the groundbreaking appointment. Speaking to Le Figaro, Louboutin said, “One morning, I was swimming and I asked myself: ‘Why not Jaden?’”

He expressed confidence in Smith’s creativity and welcomed having an intelligent voice from a new generation in the company. Louboutin believes Smith will bring increased visibility to the men’s line, which represents about a quarter of the brand’s revenue since its launch in 2008.

**A Dream Role**

For Jaden Smith, known for his roles in *The Pursuit of Happyness* and *The Karate Kid*, this new position is “one of the biggest honors” of his life. In an interview with WWD, he admitted feeling the pressure to live up to Christian Louboutin’s legacy while stepping into such a serious leadership role.

**Eager to Learn**

While Smith may currently lack some technical skills in luxury fashion design, Louboutin emphasized his eagerness and passion for the craft. “Today he lacks technique but he’s starting to learn,” Louboutin said, noting that Smith has already visited Italian factories as part of his education.

“What you cannot learn is enthusiasm and taste and passion. All that, he has,” Louboutin added.

**Debut Collection**

Jaden Smith’s first collection as artistic director for Christian Louboutin’s men’s line is set to debut at the upcoming Paris Fashion Week in January 2026.

This appointment follows a six-year friendship between Smith and Louboutin, which began with a chance encounter in Paris and a shared artistic vision. The collaboration promises to bring fresh energy and innovation to the storied luxury brand.

Lisa Marie lost will to live after son’s death, reveals Priscilla Presley

**Lisa Marie Presley Lost the Will to Live After Son’s Death, Reveals Priscilla**

*By Shreya Mukherjee | Sep 18, 2025, 05:56 PM*

Priscilla Presley, mother of the late singer-songwriter Lisa Marie Presley, recently opened up about her daughter’s heartbreaking struggle with grief following the tragic death of her grandson, Benjamin Keough.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Priscilla shared how Lisa Marie was deeply affected after Benjamin’s suicide in 2020. “He was absolutely the love of her life,” Priscilla said. “She didn’t want to be here anymore [after his suicide].”

### A Mother’s Concern

Priscilla, now 80, revealed that she often encouraged Lisa Marie to focus on caring for her 16-year-old twins, Finley and Harper. “I’d tell her, ‘Lisa, you’ve got the twins. You have to take care of the twins.’ She tried. She really did.”

Lisa Marie, who shared Benjamin and daughter Riley Keough with ex-husband Danny Keough, also had twins with her other ex-husband, Michael Lockwood.

### Heartbreaking Loss

Three years after Benjamin’s passing, Lisa Marie herself tragically died at the age of 54 due to a small bowel obstruction, a complication from bariatric surgery.

Priscilla described the moment, saying, “It was the second saddest day of my life, other than losing Elvis.” She added that it took her a long time to come to terms with Lisa Marie’s death. The family had spent the entire day at the hospital before receiving the devastating news.

### The Difficult Decision

In her memoir, *Softly, as I Leave You: Life After Elvis*, Priscilla recalls having to make the heart-wrenching decision to take Lisa Marie off life support.

“They had restarted Lisa’s heart, but there was no guarantee it would keep beating,” she wrote. “I asked the doctor, ‘What kind of life will she have if we keep her on that machine?’ He looked at me with compassion and shook his head. ‘No quality of life at all.’”

### Cherished Memories

Despite the overwhelming sorrow, Priscilla chooses to hold onto the fond memories she shared with her daughter. “She was fun to be with,” Priscilla remembered. “She liked to have a few drinks and hang out with friends. There are a lot of people who didn’t want Lisa and me to be close. We were very close.”

*Softly, as I Leave You: Life After Elvis* will be published on September 23 and is available for preorder now.

How Kishore Kumar’s Natural And Heartfelt Singing Inspired Shaan To Become A Singer

Ace singer Shaan is set to honour his ‘first guru,’ the legendary Kishore Kumar, with his first-ever tribute concert, **Forever Kishore Shaan Se**. Presented by Namrata Gupta Khan and Rabbani Mustafa Khan of NR Talent and Event Management — the family of Shaan’s guru, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan — the show is scheduled for September 19 at NMACC, Mumbai.

In an exclusive interaction with *The Free Press Journal*, Shaan opens up about the deep impact Kishore Kumar has had on his musical journey. He shares how Kishore da’s natural and heartfelt singing inspired him to become a singer, and how this concert is his way of giving back to his mentor and legend.

The show promises to be a magical evening filled with timeless melodies, memories, and soulful renditions of Kishore Kumar’s most iconic songs.

### Excerpts from the interview:

**Q. What inspired you to create a tribute show for Kishore Kumar now?**
A. Well, it was now or never! Of course, it’s been a fantastic coincidence that this show is also brought to us by NR Talent and Event Management. NR would be Namrata and Rabbani—Rabbani, of course, is Ustad ji’s son.

Actually, it all started with a conversation with Rabbani. He wanted to do a show, and he had a date at NMACC. He said, “Let’s do a Shaan show.” So I said, “I’d love to do a tribute to Kishore da.” He jumped at the idea, and within two days, posters were printed, the name was fixed, and within a week I was like, “Yaar, nikaal de poster, nahi ho payega!”

You know, this is something I hadn’t thought through. In two and a half hours, to put out a concert singing Kishore Kumar songs—I realised it’s not going to be possible. There are so many songs, so many emotions, so many facets to him. How am I going to put all that down in such a short while?

But once you’ve committed, you’re in. Since then, I’ve been working on it, and I think now I’ve reached a comfortable zone. I think I’m ready for this, and it’s going to be a fantastic show. We’re already sold out, so there’s no backing out!

**Q. What does Kishore Kumar mean to you personally and musically?**
A. Everything. I mean, you know, the fact that I wanted to be a singer is only after I heard him sing. His voice is a voice that resonates with me. His voice so effortlessly lives every emotion that he sings.

His voice is not dated. Aaj bhi agar koi gaana aap gaana chahte ho, aaj ki tareekh mein, I would think the ideal way to sing it would be how Kishore Kumar would have sung it. No extra frills, no extra fuss, no extra gaayaki. But feeling that emotion.

Not just energetic happy songs—even a sad song was sung with such grace and dignity. You’re not overdoing it. You’re not dwelling. The emotion automatically connects.

**Q. How did you prepare for Forever Kishore Shaan Se?**
A. The idea of that took many days. First, I thought maybe I’ll do a tribute with all the collaborations—the songs that he has sung with his co-singers, his composers, songs that he has sung for the top actors.

But then I realised that even that would not justify it. Then I thought, what if today Kishore da was doing a show for an audience of today? He would select songs based on emotion—runna bhi hai, hasna bhi hai. With at least 250 superhit songs, if an artist has to perform a few, they’d pick them to take the audience on a journey.

So we have almost 70 songs in a short span of two and a half hours. Some songs are short bits, some full songs. The journey is full of music, stories, and nostalgia. Everyone has a story connected to one of his songs—it should feel like that. So that’s how the journey is shaped.

**Q. Which Kishore da song do you find most emotionally challenging to sing?**
A. All his songs are emotionally challenging—because I get emotional when I sing them. But I enjoy that. The challenge is not the song.

Technical challenges are there if your voice is not in form. And of course, there’s a disclaimer—please do not compare me, a small artist, with the great Kishore Kumar. I will never, never, never measure up to that. But enjoy the journey along with me.

Though it’s not just a show—it’s a connection. So when you come, even if you’ve bought expensive tickets, you’ll be taken on a beautiful Kishore Kumar journey through his songs, with storytelling. Who better than his own son to tell us about his discography?

Google mein aapko mil jaayega, but this will be something else. Using his songs, it’s a journey into a world full of nostalgia, beautiful lyrics, poetry, and melody.

**Q. Are you planning to add your own twist to his classics or keep them as original as possible?**
A. No, no, no. They’ll be sung the way he sang them. Of course, there will be some finer changes. It’ll be a little different—but only slightly.

**Q. Can you share a glimpse of your next musical project after this concert?**
A. Yes! I’ve released a ghazal album which is doing very well. It’s called *Ghazal Ho Gayi*, and it’s composed and written by the great Nida Fazli sahab. It’s being released soon, and we’re making the best of it.

**Q. What message would you like to give to Kishore Kumar fans through this tribute?**
A. All I’d like to say is—Kishore Kumar hum rahenge na, hamari awaaz, hamare gaane rahenge. Kishore Kumar ki awaaz, unke gaane, unka charcha—they will always live on.

And as an inspiration, he will always be there. As long as someone understands what music is, what feelings are, what emotions are—he will always be relevant.

The beautiful thing about Kishore da’s singing is that it never gets dated. People will love it as a song of today and still feel his special touch. I think… you feel that. You feel that song.

Stay tuned for an unforgettable evening celebrating the timeless legacy of Kishore Kumar through the soulful voice of Shaan.
