Trump’s policies and inflation drive governor’s race in New Jersey, where GOP has been making gains

**New Jersey Voters Head to the Polls in High-Stakes Governor’s Race**

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey voters are casting their ballots Tuesday to elect the state’s next governor in a closely watched race that may reveal whether Democrats can maintain control of a state that has traditionally been reliably blue, but has shown signs of shifting toward Republicans in recent years.

Jack Ciattarelli, a former state legislator endorsed by former President Donald Trump, is seeking to become New Jersey’s first Republican governor since 2018. He faces U.S. Representative Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat in her fourth term in Congress, who would become the state’s second female governor if elected.

The outcome of the election could serve as a gauge of how the electorate is responding to Trump’s policies and whether key groups of Democratic voters still have confidence in the party’s leadership.

Ciattarelli, 63, is running for governor for the third time. He lost a Republican primary in 2017, then narrowly lost the general election in 2021 to Democratic Governor Phil Murphy, who is now term-limited. This campaign, Ciattarelli frames the race as an opportunity for voters to remove Democrats who have controlled both the governor’s office and the state Legislature for nearly eight years.

He has emphasized his background as a business owner with deep roots in New Jersey, along with his experience as a state and local elected official. Ciattarelli has touted his close relationship with Trump, saying it will benefit the state.

“Make no mistake. We cannot afford another four years of Phil Murphy’s failed policies,” Ciattarelli said during a rally earlier in the campaign.

Sherrill, 53, has centered her campaign around pushing back against Trump’s influence. She has recently highlighted the Trump administration’s sudden freeze on funding for a multibillion-dollar project to replace the aging rail tunnels that connect New Jersey to New York City beneath the Hudson River.

“This is what we’re fighting for in this country—to make sure that we have a president who has to follow the law,” Sherrill said.

Sherrill’s biography includes service as a U.S. Navy officer and helicopter pilot as well as work as a prosecutor. She has painted Ciattarelli as a candidate who would align with Trump’s actions regardless of the consequences.

If elected, Sherrill would join Christine Todd Whitman—who served from 1994 to 2001—as New Jersey’s only female governors.

In the 2024 presidential election, former Vice President Kamala Harris won New Jersey, but Trump narrowed his margin of loss significantly by shifting Hispanic voters toward the Republican side. Additionally, Democrats’ voter registration advantage has been eroding in recent years.

Ciattarelli has walked a fine line on Trump, praising him and giving the former president an “A” grade, while simultaneously seeking to appeal to Hispanic voters. Although he supports Trump’s effort to end birthright citizenship, Ciattarelli has also spoken about creating a “pathway to recognition,” which would involve providing driver’s licenses and Social Security numbers to undocumented immigrants without criminal records—a stance at odds with current Trump administration policies.

However, Ciattarelli has not clarified the specifics of what he means by a “pathway to recognition.” It is worth noting that New Jersey already issues driver’s licenses to some undocumented immigrants, and the federal government issues Social Security numbers.

With a tight race anticipated, the U.S. Department of Justice announced plans to monitor polling sites in Passaic County, a former Democratic stronghold that Trump won in 2024. New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin, a Democrat, criticized the monitoring program as “highly inappropriate,” noting it was requested by the state Republican Party.

Sherrill and Ciattarelli have debated twice and continue to campaign across the state, meeting voters at diners and relying on surrogates to spread their messages.

Prominent Democratic governors Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, and Wes Moore of Maryland, along with former President Barack Obama, have all rallied in New Jersey to support Sherrill.

Meanwhile, Trump has campaigned for Ciattarelli through telephone rallies, urging voters to back the Republican candidate. He has pledged that Ciattarelli would “rapidly” reduce energy and other costs, though details have not been specified.

In addition to the governor’s race, all 80 seats in the New Jersey State Assembly are on the ballot. Currently, Democrats hold a 52-28 majority.

Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Gets Backlash for What He Did During Week 9 Loss

For the Cowboys, the number of chances to set things right in this wildly fluctuating 2025 season is starting to run low. After Week 8’s blowout loss to the Broncos on the road, it seemed that a Week 9 matchup against the Cardinals—who came into the game at 2-5 and were playing without starting quarterback Kyler Murray—on “Monday Night Football” was the perfect opportunity to pull the Dallas season together and get a second-half run going.

Instead, the Cowboys looked especially bad on defense—which NFL observers have gotten used to—but performed nearly as poorly on offense, as well. The team couldn’t cover star receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who recorded seven catches for 96 yards in just three quarters. Meanwhile, Dallas struggled to gain momentum in its own passing game, as star (and recent MVP candidate) Dak Prescott was being outplayed by career backup Jacoby Brissett.

Adding fuel to the fire was a surprising decision by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to invite Cowboys fan and ardent Jones/Dallas critic Stephen A. Smith of ESPN (and Sirius XM radio) as his guest in his suite for the game. This only brought further scrutiny to a situation that arguably would have been better off remaining under the radar.

### Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Left in the Lurch

Ideally, the Cowboys would have romped over the Cardinals, and the atmosphere in Jones’ suite might have been joyful. Instead, the Cardinals raced to a 10-0 lead early and extended it to 27-10 entering the fourth quarter. By that point, Stephen A. Smith was already long gone.

In fact, Smith was seen uncomfortably bidding Jones farewell shortly after tight end Jake Ferguson fumbled the ball on a third-and-17 play from the Cardinals’ 42-yard line with 6:40 to go in the half.

“MNF” play-by-play announcer Joe Buck commented during the broadcast that the state of the Cowboys was perfectly summed up by Jones’ decision to invite Smith and Smith’s hasty exit. Buck remarked, “They say a picture is worth one billion words. There it is, all right. Stephen A. is like, ‘All right, good luck. I’m outta here. I’m gonna go post on social media.’”

### Stephen A. Smith Not Much Liked Among Cowboys Backers

On the bigger picture, Jones’ entanglement with Smith didn’t pan out well. Both media members and Cowboys fans quickly pointed out how awkward the meeting appeared right from the start.

Jon Machota of The Athletic sarcastically posted a video of the encounter to Twitter (now known as X), captioned, “How do you feel about this?”

At popular sports aggregator Underdog Sports, Smith’s abrupt departure was mocked with the comment, “Stephen A. Smith hit Jerry Jones with the ‘aight I’m out’ after that Cowboys fumble.”

Fans were far from pleased with the whole situation, either. One noted that Joe Buck’s broadcast partner is Cowboys legend Troy Aikman, who was left speechless by the Jones-Smith scene. “Not a single reaction from Troy Aikman. That tells you everything you need to know about what he thinks of Stephen A. Smith,” the commenter wrote.

Other fans added their opinions:

– “So ridiculous Steven A. hates the Cowboys.”
– “Wild to let someone in your suite that talks about your team any chance he gets, but it’s Jerry so I’m not surprised.”
– “Jones is the laughing stock of all sports. Not a chance another owner takes him seriously.”

As the Cowboys look to salvage their season, the drama off the field only adds to the mounting challenges facing the team and its leadership.

LISTEN: Unhinged voicemail exposes left-wing candidate’s death threats against GOP senator

Freshman Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., was targeted with death threats and other extreme insults by a left-wing city commissioner candidate from Montana’s capital city of Helena. The candidate called his office several weeks ago, leaving a voicemail expressing her thoughts about the Republican senator.

The voicemail came in July, shortly after Sheehy voted with his Republican colleagues to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a sweeping tax and spending package from Republicans that angered many Democrats—including Helena city commissioner candidate Haley McKnight—following its passage.

“Hi, this is Haley McKnight. I’m a constituent in Helena, Montana,” McKnight began in the voicemail, a recording of which was obtained and verified by Fox News Digital.

“I just wanted to let you know that you are the most insufferable kind of coward and thief. You just stripped away healthcare for 17 million Americans, and I hope you’re really proud of that. I hope that one day you get pancreatic cancer, and it spreads throughout your body so fast that they can’t even treat you for it.”

The anger did not stop there. During the roughly minute-long voicemail, which phone logs reportedly show came in on the afternoon of July 1, McKnight directed further insults toward Sheehy’s fertility and his children. She also warned the senator not to “meet me on the streets.”

“I hope you die in the street like a dog,” McKnight continued. “One day, you’re going to live to regret this. I hope that your children never forgive you. I hope that you are infertile. I hope that you manage to never get a boner ever again. You are the worst piece of sh– I have ever, ever, ever had the misfortune of looking at. God forbid that you ever meet me on the streets because I will make you regret it. F you. I hope you die.”

McKnight added that Sheehy doesn’t “serve Montanans,” but rather just his “own private interests. All that you have done since you have gotten into power is do sh– for yourself.”

### Background on Haley McKnight

Originally from North Carolina, McKnight now lives and works in Montana. She owns a small business called Sage & Oats Trading Post, which she describes as “a successful Native American-owned gift store” on her campaign website. Additionally, she runs a consulting and design business named Morningstar Design Ltd Co and serves as president and a board member of the Helena Young Professionals group.

McKnight is also a recipient of the Helena Chamber’s 20 under 40 award.

On her campaign website, McKnight states, “I am always ready to stand up for what I believe and challenge the status quo,” listing priorities such as housing for all, better governmental transparency, increased funding for public art and music, and more accessible streets and downtown living.

In an interview with a local news outlet, McKnight highlighted her past volunteer work for the Obama campaign as well as more recent involvement in Democrat candidate Steve Held’s campaign for Congress, though Held did not advance past the primary.

Public campaign donation records reviewed by Fox News Digital show that McKnight has donated to multiple Democratic candidates.

### Political Campaign

The Helena city commissioner race, traditionally nonpartisan, marks McKnight’s first time running for political office. She was originally one of five declared nonpartisan candidates before advancing to the November general election after finishing third in a nonpartisan primary in September.

### McKnight’s Response

“I’m a constituent, and I was responding to some horrible policy with some justified rage,” McKnight told Fox News Digital about the voicemail when reached for comment.

She expressed disappointment that Sheehy leaked her information to conservative news media the night before an election, calling it “a cheap shot.” She added, “I’m one of his constituents, and … this message is nothing that I’d say to my grandmother or in front of any children; it was meant for Senator Sheehy alone.”

McKnight also said it was “laughable” that this is how Sheehy responds to constituent voicemails. She added, “I also would have thought that somebody from the armed forces could have handled some tough language.”

Sheehy is a former Navy SEAL who was shot while deployed in Afghanistan.

McKnight further explained she was simply trying to “convey the gravity of the situation” with the voicemail and denied any intention to threaten Sheehy.

In an interview with the National Review, McKnight said she “obviously” had no intent of hurting Sheehy, stating, “I couldn’t, I’m a woman. I wanted to drive home the struggles that people that I know are going through because of his policies.”

She acknowledged that some people were shocked by her voicemail’s specificity but maintained that these issues affect people in her community.

McKnight also criticized Sheehy for focusing too much on blocking the release of “the Epstein files” rather than understanding the struggles Montanans face.

When pressed on whether she stood by her rhetoric from the voicemail—particularly after public officials from both sides have called to deescalate political rhetoric—she declined to comment.

“I have received numerous death and rape threats since this story has been published,” McKnight said. “My business is being threatened at the moment because of the actions of the senator,” referring to Sheehy’s decision to make her voicemail public.

Calling the situation “completely politically motivated,” McKnight concluded, “It’s a cheap shot the night before an election … the only thing left I have to say is release the Epstein files.”

### Additional Comments

Montana has no major statewide elections this year.

To the National Review, McKnight added that seeing Sheehy “throw away what Montanans need and want for his own betterment is enough to make me, yeah, want to fight him on site. I’ll gladly say that, because I think in the time of rising fascism, we shouldn’t be afraid to say these things.”

When asked if she thought her voicemail went too far, McKnight said no. She shared that she has had friends die of pancreatic cancer due to lack of access to care.

“This is a man who’s so rich that he’s never, ever going to have to deal with that problem,” McKnight said.

In her comments to Fox News Digital, she also recalled a friend who died from pancreatic cancer “because he couldn’t afford to treat it.”

The incident underscores the increasing tensions in political discourse and highlights the challenges lawmakers and constituents face in navigating passionate disagreements without resorting to threats or violence.

Jackson State gets back on track, dominates Florida A&M 41-16

Jackson State got back on track Saturday with a commanding 41-16 victory over Florida A&M in Tallahassee. The win was pivotal; a loss would have thrown the SWAC East championship race into utter chaos. With the victory, JSU re-establishes control over its destiny.

The Tigers entered the game without starting quarterback Jacobian Morgan, who suffered a lower-leg injury in the previous week’s game against Grambling State. Head Coach T.C. Taylor successfully pivoted the offensive game plan, relying entirely on the run game with backup Jarad Lockhart under center. Jackson State’s revamped offense focused almost exclusively on the ground, rushing 56 times and compiling a massive 392 total rushing yards—a figure that alone exceeded FAMU’s total offense for the night (202 yards).

Lockhart, who only attempted 10 passes (completing five with one passing touchdown), used his legs effectively, rushing eight times for 37 yards. The ground attack was powered by the running back room: Ahmad Miller led the effort with 19 carries for 165 yards and one touchdown, including a 64-yard scamper; Donerio Davenport finished with 16 carries for 112 yards and a score; and Travis Terrell Jr., whom many fans have long advocated to be featured more heavily, rushed nine times for 29 yards and scored a touchdown.

While the score was a defensive battle at halftime (10-3), Jackson State exploded in the second half, outscoring FAMU 31-13. This demoralizing loss further heats up the hot seat for FAMU Head Coach James Colzie III.

On the following Monday’s SWAC call, Coach Colzie expressed deep frustration that his team failed to capitalize against the injury-depleted Jackson State squad, noting their performance was plagued by poor decisions and self-inflicted wounds. “We started the game, you know, mishandling the kickoff, having to start a drive at the minus 11 and then obviously having to start on the next drive at the minus one,” Colzie detailed.

He specifically pointed to offensive inefficiency that crippled their ability to sustain drives: “We were running, we had a lot of third down the longs, man, third down, the extra longs. Right. And that’s not the recipe for success, especially offensively.”

FAMU finished the game failing to convert on 10 of their 11 third-down attempts, which validated Colzie’s concerns about getting into “third down and long” situations against a stout defense.

Looking ahead, Florida A&M now faces a difficult road game against the UAPB Golden Lions, who are riding high after snapping a five-year losing streak against Southern University with a dominant 40-21 win. UAPB will be looking to secure a victory against a struggling FAMU team to further raise the stock of their program.

Meanwhile, Jackson State will look to continue its winning momentum when they host Mississippi Valley State. Both games are set to kick off on Saturday at 3 p.m. EST.
