Matt Vezza’s career-high 5 touchdown passes highlight New Hampshire’s 42-14 rout of Bryant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) — Matt Vezza threw a career-high five touchdown passes as New Hampshire soared past Bryant with a commanding 42-14 victory on Saturday.

Vezza completed 27 of 36 passes for 328 yards, also a personal best. Wide receiver Caleb Burke was a standout, hauling in nine receptions for 134 yards, including a spectacular 72-yard touchdown catch. Peyton Strickland contributed with two touchdown receptions.

On the ground, Denzell Gibson gained 90 yards and capped off his performance with a 45-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, helping lead the Wildcats to their seventh win of the season. New Hampshire finished with an impressive 467 yards of total offense.

Bryant, struggling to keep up, was limited to 234 yards of offense. Elijah Elliott was the primary offensive threat for the Bulldogs, rushing for both of Bryant’s touchdowns and totaling 60 yards on 18 carries.

The Wildcats set the tone early as their first four possessions each resulted in touchdown passes from Vezza, giving New Hampshire a 28-7 lead at halftime.

With this win, New Hampshire improves to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the Coastal Athletic Association, while Bryant falls to 3-8 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

Meet the finalists for the Miss Maine Field Hockey award

Skowhegan’s Grace Mayo and Brewer’s Abbie Derosier were named finalists for the Miss Maine Field Hockey award on Saturday. This prestigious award, given to the top senior player in the state, will have its winner announced on December 7 at the Maine Field Hockey Association’s banquet held at the Augusta Civic Center.

Mayo, a midfielder for Skowhegan, has recorded 11 goals and 14 assists this season heading into the River Hawks’ Class A North semifinal against Lewiston on Saturday. A four-year starter and team captain, Mayo has verbally committed during the early application process to attend Bates College, where she plans to play field hockey and compete in track and field.

Derosier, a goalie for Brewer, achieved five shutouts this season. Brewer finished with a 7-6-2 record and secured the sixth seed in the Class A North playoffs. A three-year starter and team captain, Derosier will continue her athletic career at Division II Assumption University next year.
