Maria from ‘Sesame Street’ reveals she had flirtatious chemistry with Oscar the Grouch — and loved his wildly inappropriate quips

Sonia Manzano known to multiple generations as Maria on “Sesame Street” confesses that there was flirtatious chemistry between her character and Oscar the Grouch. “That’s absolutely true,” she said with a laugh during an exclusive interview with Page Six. “I really love Oscar. He was my favorite Muppet character. “I always kid around, saying, ‘I left the show because 44 years was long enough for me to wait for him to propose.” Manzano, 75, explained that she loved Oscar because of his sense of humor, as portrayed by late Muppeteer Caroll Spinney. “He would just say things, ‘If you don’t want to be a murderer, don’t be around people who shouldn’t be killed,’” she said, still laughing. “‘I know my mother used to rock me to sleep, she used real rocks.’ “You know, those kinds of quips were endearing to me. I loved it.” Manzano is the subject of a documentary, “Street Smart: Lessons from a TV Icon,” viewable online through the end of November as part of Doc NYC’s Metropolitan Competition. The Bronx native joined the legendary PBS kids series in 1971, two years after it debuted, and eventually began writing scripts for the series. Manzano said Jim Henson the legendary puppeteer who created such characters as Oscar, Big Bird and Cookie Monster and voiced Ernie from 1969 to 1990 was not an easy person to know. “He was a very enigmatic person,” she explained. “You never knew what he was thinking. I can’t say that I knew him well. He didn’t open up and we weren’t on the set at the same time.” One thing she said she did learn from the creative genius who, died suddenly in 1990 at 53, is how to treat people. “He never criticized the performers,” she said. “He always said, ‘I think we can do that better.’ And kind of putting himself in that group that was going to do things better.” The Emmy winner recalled how she shaped Maria by drawing on her own childhood experiences in the South Bronx and acknowledges her character’s importance for young Latino viewers. “Not seeing people who looked like you reflected in society certainly made you feel invisible,” she said. Manzano knew it was time to leave the show, which now plays on both PBS and Netflix, when she was on a panel with other performers and realized that she was the only one there who had personally known Henson, and also began not recognizing the show’s celeb guests. Since leaving the show, Manzano has written children’s books and is the creator of the cartoon series “Alma’s Way,” set in The Bronx and revolving around a 6-year-old Puerto Rican girl.

Luke Hughes fills brother Jack’s void as Devils edge Capitals in 3-2 shootout

**Devils Edge Capitals 3-2 in Shootout to Extend Winning Streak**

**WASHINGTON (AP)** — Luke Hughes delivered a goal and an assist, while Simon Nemec scored the decisive shootout winner as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Saturday night.

Arseny Gritsyuk also contributed a goal for the Devils, who have triumphed in four of their last five games in overtime or shootouts. With this victory, New Jersey remains firmly atop the Metropolitan Division standings.

For the Capitals, Alex Ovechkin recorded his 902nd career goal and added an assist. Connor McMichael also posted a goal and an assist. However, Washington extended their struggles, losing eight of their last 10 games and remaining at the bottom of the division.

With Jack Hughes sidelined for eight weeks following finger surgery, younger brother Luke Hughes stepped up to fill the void on both ends of the ice. Early in the first period, as Washington took three consecutive penalties, Luke Hughes found Gritsyuk wide open for a quick one-timer, putting New Jersey on the board 1-0 with a power-play goal.

Later in the opening frame, Hughes scored himself, firing a wrist shot from the slot past Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson to give the Devils a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.

Washington increased the pressure in the second and finally broke through in the third period. McMichael tapped in a back-door feed from Ovechkin to cut the Devils’ lead in half. Seven minutes later, Ovechkin capitalized on a pass from McMichael, wiring a shot past Devils’ goalie Jake Allen to tie the game at 2-2 and send it into overtime.

Both goaltenders—Allen and Thompson—put on a goaltending clinic during the scoreless overtime period, which led to a shootout to decide the winner. Jesper Bratt and Simon Nemec scored for New Jersey in the shootout, sealing the victory.

Allen made 30 saves, while Thompson stopped 29 shots through regulation and overtime.

Woman arrested six years after fatal stabbing in SE Albuquerque [mug shot…t-shirt]

**Woman Arrested Six Years After Fatal Stabbing in Southeast Albuquerque**

*By Nakayla McClelland | ABQ Journal | November 1, 2025*

A woman is behind bars six years after she allegedly stabbed a man to death at a home in Southeast Albuquerque.

Antionette Hernandez, 29, was arrested Thursday and charged with an open count of murder and criminal trespass in the 2019 killing of 38-year-old Eric Lewis. Hernandez does not yet have an attorney.

Lewis’ stabbing went unsolved for six years after the detective on the case was promoted to sergeant, according to court records. The case was later assigned to an investigator for review before being transferred to a homicide detective in April 2025.

Prosecutors filed a motion on Friday to keep Hernandez behind bars until trial, citing that she “exhibited violent and dangerous behavior that threatens the safety of the community.”

“The Court will be unable to ensure that the Defendant is not possessing knives, and not threatening, or hurting more innocent people,” the motion states.

Police were conducting a patrol on September 27, 2019, of condemned houses in Southeast Albuquerque to ensure that no one was living inside them, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court. Around 11:30 a.m., officers entered a condemned home in the 400 block of Utah SE, south of Zuni, and noticed “a wad of hair on the floor and a strange smell,” the complaint says.

Officers saw bloody shoe prints throughout the kitchen floor and found Lewis’ body. An autopsy later determined that Lewis had been fatally stabbed.

The investigation remained cold until recent developments led to Hernandez’s arrest.

Deadly Tick-Borne Virus Detected in Tokyo Dog for First Time

Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) is primarily spread through tick bites and can cause symptoms such as fever, coughing, and vomiting in both humans and animals. In severe cases, the illness can be fatal.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, a pet dog in the city developed symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea last month. Upon examination, the owner found a tick attached to the dog’s body. Subsequent testing confirmed the dog was infected with SFTS.

Tragically, the dog passed away on September 27. Authorities noted that the animal had pre-existing health conditions, and it remains unclear whether SFTS was the direct cause of death.

Until now, only two confirmed cases of human SFTS infection had been reported in Tokyo. This latest case marks the first detection of SFTS in an animal within the city.

In response, the metropolitan government is urging residents to take precautions when outdoors. Recommended measures include using tick repellents and carefully checking both themselves and their pets to avoid tick bites. Staying vigilant can help prevent the spread of SFTS and protect public health.
