Storm Amy: Wind warnings upgraded for five counties

An orange wind warning has been issued for five counties as Storm Amy hits the country. Originally a yellow warning, the alerts for Donegal, Mayo, Galway, Sligo, and Leitrim were upgraded to orange wind warnings for Friday. The warning will be in effect from 2 pm until 10 pm on Friday.

Met Éireann has advised of possible power outages, fallen trees, very difficult travelling conditions, and potential wave overtopping during this period.

A yellow wind warning remains in place for the rest of the country on Friday, from 2 pm until midnight.

Currently, there is a yellow rain warning in force for Cavan, Donegal, all of Munster, Connacht, and Longford until 8 pm on Thursday night. Additionally, an orange rain warning is active for Kerry until 8 pm. Met Éireann has cautioned the public about localised flooding and challenging travelling conditions in these areas.

Along the coast, a Status Red storm warning is in effect from Loop Head to Rossan Point to Fair Head between 2 pm and 8 pm on Friday, signaling the highest level of alert.

In Northern Ireland, a yellow wind warning applies to the entire region from 4 pm on Friday until 6 am on Saturday. The UK Met Office states that Storm Amy is expected to bring a spell of strong winds across Northern Ireland during Friday and Friday night.

Storm Amy is the first named storm of the season to affect Ireland. It is the remnants of Hurricane Humberto, which recently impacted the Caribbean and the east coast of the United States. Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the storm moves through the region.
