The Duffer Brothers Finally “Let The Cat Out Of The Bag” With A Nightmarish ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Episode 2 Cold Open

SPOILER ALERT: This post spoils the beginning of Episode 2 of Season 5 of Stranger Things, “The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler. Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer have finally brought a Demogorgon into Mike Wheeler’s (Finn Wolfhard) house, which Ross previously teased as “the craziest cold open we’ve ever done.” The end of the first episode of Season 5 Volume 1 watches the agile and destructive creature rip a gash in Holly Wheeler’s (Nell Fisher) bedroom ceiling in an attempt to kidnap her just like Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) was kidnapped in Season 1. “This was the cool thing about it being the final season because [we] could really let the cat out of the bag as far as the entire town is concerned,” Matt Duffer told Deadline. “We always explored what it would look like if Karen and Ted and the rest of town were to find out what was going on, but it just created all sorts of problems. They would not let their family stay there or whatever, so we kept them rather oblivious.” Holly initially escapes the monster and runs to her mother Karen (Cara Buono), who is drawing a bubble bath to ABBA’s “Fernando,” to frantically try and tell her about the horrific encounter. Karen, who has had a bottle of wine, doesn’t believe her daughter until she finds blood on her hand after cradling the back of Holly’s head. Lights flicker, and mother and daughter hide in the bath tub until Ted (Joe Chrest) realizes something is happening in the house and distracts the creature for a bit. “It was fun to unleash the horror in the Wheeler house. We had always wanted to do a Wheeler house attack. I think we talked about it all the way back in Season 1, so it’s something that we’ve been dying to do, and it was a blast to shoot,” Matt Duffer continued. “And we’ve always wanted to give Cara a real hero moment, because she has, even as a person, a real ferocity and strength. We wanted to show really, where Nancy’s courage and strength comes from.” As revealed in the opening moments of Episode 2, Karen breaks her now-empty wine bottle and gets in some good hits with the jagged glass before the monster slashes her chest and takes Holly into the alternate dimension known as The Upside Down. “It’s not Ted,” Ross Duffer added to his brother’s point about Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) getting her determination and ferocity from her mother versus her father. Ted was hitting golf balls into trees from the backyard until he saw the house’s flickering lights and ventured inside with his golf club to apprehend the intruder. “He has a slight moment. I mean, he does swing the golf club. It doesn’t do a whole lot, but he gets one good swing in,” Matt added. “We said in the script that it’s the best swing of his life. I’m not sure that came across. He’s struggling outside, and he gets [the Demogorgon] right in the head. He does probably as much damage as one could possibly do with a golf club.”.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 5: Release Date, Cast & Series Finale Theatrical Premiere

The countdown to the Upside Down’s final chapter is officially on. Stranger Things season 5 has fans buzzing as Netflix’s hit sci-fi series prepares to wrap up its story after nearly a decade. Since its explosive debut in 2016, the show has become a cultural phenomenon, and now, the long-awaited final season is almost here. While production was originally set to begin in 2023, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused major delays across Hollywood, pushing filming for season 5 into 2024. But now, things are back on track and it won’t be long before Eleven and the gang return for one last ride. Hollywood Life has rounded up all the latest news we know about the fifth and final season. ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Release Date Stranger Things will release its season 5 episodes in three parts: four episodes on November 26, 2025, three on December 25, and the finale on December 31 in select theaters in the U. S. and Canada. How to Watch the ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Finale Screenings of the season 5 finale will be available in 350 theaters across the country and in Canada starting at 5 p. m. PT on December 31, and it will run through January 1, 2026. The finale’s global premiere will still take place on Netflix. What Is ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 About? The show will be coming full circle in the final season. The focus will be back on Will Byers in Stranger Things 5. “Will really takes center stage again in 5,” Ross Duffer told Variety for Noah Schnapp’s Power of Young Hollywood cover story, which was released on August 7. “This emotional arc for him is what we feel is going to hopefully tie the whole series together. Will is used to being the young one, the introverted one, the one that’s being protected. So part of his journey, it’s not just sexuality it’s Will coming into his own as a young man. Just as filming was about to get underway in May 2023, the Duffers released a note on the official Stranger Things writers’ page and gave an update about the status of season 5. “Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then over and out. #wgastrong,” the Duffers tweeted. The Writers Guild of America went on strike on May 1 after negotiations broke down between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which includes companies like Netflix, Amazon, and Disney. The members of the WGA are asking for increased pay, better residuals, staffing requirements, and clarification about the use of AI. Almost two months later, SAG-AFTRA also went on strike. As of August 2023, both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA are still on strike. On March 21, 2023, the Stranger Things writers’ Twitter account gave a little Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Noah Schnapp (Will), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Sadie Sink (Max), Natalie Dyer (Nancy), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan), Joe Keery (Steve), and Maya Hawke (Robin). The series veterans Winona Ryder (Joyce) and David Harbour (Hopper) will also return, rounding out the original lineup. In addition, Brett Gelman (Murray Bauman), Cara Buono (Karen Wheeler), and Amybeth McNulty (Vickie) are all confirmed to return in Season 5. Hollywood Life spoke exclusively with Cara Buono in 2023, and she shared her hopes for one last classic Wheeler family dinner scene. “I hope that there are more of like, in season one, there were a lot of family dinners,” Cara said. “And I loved when the kids came over for dinner. so I hope there’s at least one big dinner at the Wheelers where the kids come over and there’s a lot of awkward stuff going on. That would be really, really fun.” Jamie Campbell Bower is also set to return as Vecna, and according to him, the villain is far from finished. “He’s pissed, he’s properly vexed,” Jamie told NME. “He’s rebuilding, and he’s out for blood. That classic Jason Voorhees thing-you’ve made a big mistake.” Maya Hawke opened up to Rolling Stone in 2022 about what she hopes for Robin in the final season. “Well, it’s the last season, so people are probably going to die. I would love to die and get my hero’s moment. But I love the way that the Duffer Brothers love their actors. and they don’t want to kill them. I think that’s a beautiful quality.” She also teased she’d be down for a spinoff-but only if it included co-star Joe Keery, who plays Robin’s best friend, Steve. “He’s so funny and wonderful and smart. I would do anything with him.” And in a surprise reveal at Netflix’s 2023 TUDUM event, Arnold Schwarzenegger helped announce that Linda Hamilton his legendary Terminator co-star joined the cast. I’ll see you in Hawkins.” Netflix later confirmed Hamilton’s casting with a signature upside-down photo on the Stranger Things Instagram account. Additional new cast members include Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler, Jake Connelly as Derek, and Alex Breaux as Lt. Akers, among others. ‘Stranger Things’ Run So Far Stranger Things became a global phenomenon when it premiered on Netflix in 2016. The series catapulted the young stars to superstardom, and they have grown up before our eyes. Following the success of the second season, the cast reportedly scored major pay raises for season 3 and beyond, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The cast was divided into “different pay tiers” with Winona and David making up the “A tier” that earned them up to $350,000 an episode. The “B tier” included the younger stars like Finn, Gaten, Caleb, and Noah, who started making $250,000 an episode. The “C tier” featured the older kids Natalia, Charlie, and Joe who began making $150,000 an episode in season 3. At the time, it couldn’t be confirmed exactly what Millie was making. After making $30,000 per episode alongside Finn, Gaten, and Caleb, Millie separated herself from the rest of the cast during renegotiations. For season 3, Millie was at least making $250,000 like her fellow young actors, but sources told THR she could be making as high as $350,000 per episode or in her own tier of $300,000 per episode. What Happened In Season 4? Stranger Things season 4 introduced the show’s biggest bad yet: Vecna. The Upside Down was created after Eleven battled Henry Creel, who also happened to be One, the first child to be experimented on by Dr. Brenner. When Eleven was a child, Henry/One posed as Peter Ballard at the Hawkins Lab. Once he gained Eleven’s trust, he betrayed her and killed the other children at the lab. Henry/One faced off against a young Eleven, and she opened the first gate to the Upside Down as she tried to destroy him. Henry/One didn’t die when he was thrown into the Upside Down. Vecna was born. Vecna is the one behind all the chaos that’s been wreaking havoc in Hawkins. In Volume 2 of Stranger Things season 4, the Hawkins crew (with Eleven’s help) tried to take down Vecna. In the midst of this fight, Eddie sacrificed himself and died in Dustin’s arms, Eleven infiltrated Max’s mind, Jason and Lucas got into a brutal fight, and Max was nearly killed by Vecna. Joseph Quinn became an instant star after his breakout performance as Eddie Munson. Even though Eddie died in season 4, many fans hope that Eddie will return in season 5. “He feels kind of gone, it feels pretty hard to bring him back, I’d say, but, I don’t know,” Joseph told Access about possibly returning. Shawn Levy spoke about Eddie’s possible return in an interview on the 2022 Emmy Awards red carpet. “A lot of people can’t even handle the thought of a season five without some excuse for Eddie present, he told The Hollywood Reporter. “Highly unlikely, but we hear you world. We know you’re obsessed with Eddie. So are we.” Joyce and Hopper finally kissed and got out of Russia with Murray. They returned home where they reunited with their kids. However, the current state of Hawkins is borderline ruin. Max did die for a moment before she was brought back to life by Eleven. Max’s death allowed Vecna to get that fourth kill he needed to open the last gate. The faultlines created by the 4 collided at the center of Hawkins, creating massive openings to the Upside Down. The end of the season 4 finale showed the effects of the Upside Down creeping in on Hawkins, and the biggest fight for Eleven and the others is still ahead. Meanwhile, Max is in a coma after her confrontation with Vecna. “Now that I’m here in Hawkins, I can feel him,” Will said to Mike about Vecna. “And he’s hurt. He’s hurting. But he’s still alive. It’s strange, knowing now who it was this whole time, but I can still remember what he thinks and how he thinks. And he’s not going to stop. Ever. Not until he’s taken everything. And everyone. We have to kill him.” Is ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 the Last One? Yes, Netflix and the crew behind the series have said that season 5 is its final one.

Millie Bobby Brown Recounts Her Odd (But Logical In Retrospect) Stranger Things Audition

The countdown for Eleven’s final chapter is officially underway, and expectations are soaring for Season 5 of *Stranger Things*. The series is set to return on Wednesday, November 26, marking the beginning of the end for the beloved show. After nearly a decade, series star Millie Bobby Brown and her demogorgon-destroying friends will finally close the door on the Upside Down.

This monumental moment is significant for everyone involved, and it recently prompted Brown to reflect nostalgically on how it all began. In an interview with *Empire*, she recalled her first audition for Eleven, the character that would come to define much of her life.

“It must have been June or July [2015] when I screen-tested,” Brown said. “They flew me from London to L.A., and my seat number on the flight was 11. Then the floor of the hotel I was staying in was 11. It felt like a sign.”

During that first audition, Millie Bobby Brown was welcomed by producer Shawn Levy along with series creators Matt and Ross Duffer. “They gave me a cardboard box of clothes and were like, ‘Do whatever you feel like with this box of clothes but try to imagine that you don’t know what clothes are. You’ve never been exposed to them,’” she explained.

Brown was understandably puzzled by the unusual exercise and unsure where it would lead. “I was like, ‘What the hell is this weird acting exercise?!’ I didn’t know that was the character. I didn’t know anything about Eleven. I didn’t even know she had powers,” she admitted.

The Duffer Brothers didn’t take long to decide if Brown was the right fit for the lead role. By the next day, they made the life-changing call. “They said, ‘Millie, would you like to be our Eleven?’ and I just fell on the floor,” she recalled. “Then two or three months later, we moved to Atlanta and my hair was gone.”

Now, fans only have to wait and see what unfolds as *Stranger Things* draws to a close. Volume 1 of Season 5 will be released on November 26, followed by Volume 2 on December 25, with the finale premiering in theaters on December 31.

The journey of Eleven and her friends is nearing its thrilling conclusion — and the excitement couldn’t be higher.

Stranger Things season 5 trailer leaks online hours before official Netflix release – and fans think it includes a big spoiler

**Netflix Accidentally Leaks Final Trailer for Stranger Things Season 5**

In an unexpected turn of events, Netflix has accidentally leaked the final trailer for *Stranger Things* Season 5. The two-minute teaser was uploaded overnight in error, sparking a flurry of excitement and speculation among the show’s dedicated fanbase.

With the highly anticipated final season set to premiere on November 26, Netflix had planned to officially unveil the trailer on October 30. The streaming giant even confirmed this on social media, giving fans plenty of time to prepare for the big reveal.

However, an apparent miscommunication or mistake meant the trailer went live several hours ahead of schedule. Although Netflix quickly pulled the footage offline, many sharp-eyed fans had already noticed the premature release and managed to capture screenshots and clips. Some were even able to download the entire teaser before it vanished.

As a result, social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Reddit are now flooded with discussions, screengrabs, and leaked footage from the trailer. For those who want to experience the teaser in full HD or 4K quality, it’s advised to avoid these forums until Netflix officially shares the trailer.

### Major Spoilers Ahead: The Final Scene That Has Fans Talking

There is one particular moment from the leaked trailer that has caught the fan community’s attention—and it’s causing quite a stir.

In the trailer’s closing scene, Will Byers faces off against the season’s Big Bad, Vecna. Vecna uses his telekinetic powers to hold a terrified Will aloft, ominously telling him he’s going to help “one last time” before the screen cuts to black.

This chilling moment has led many fans to speculate that Will might be in grave danger, with some fearing his death. However, it’s important to note that this scene’s exact placement within the season is still unclear.

The prevailing theory among viewers is that the footage shown comes from the first volume of Season 5, which consists of the first four episodes. If that’s accurate, this cliffhanger moment could very well be the final scene of Volume 1, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the second part.

Given Will’s critical role in the overarching story, it seems unlikely he’d be killed off so early in the season. Instead, this scene might serve as a dramatic pivot point, setting the stage for Volume 2’s events.

### What’s Next for Stranger Things Fans?

The official release of *Stranger Things* Season 5 Volume 1 is only weeks away, with the premiere scheduled for November 26. The excitement continues to build as fans count down to the return of one of Netflix’s most beloved shows.

Before the official trailer drops, it might be a good time to revisit the first trailer for Season 5 and refresh yourself on what’s to come.

Stay tuned for more updates, and be sure to follow TechRadar for the latest *Stranger Things* news!

‘Stranger Things’: The truth behind Hawkins’s iconic locations

By Vinita Jain | Oct 02, 2025 | 10:27 am

**What’s the Story Behind Stranger Things’ Iconic Locations?**

*Stranger Things* has become a household name, thanks to its gripping storyline and nostalgia-inducing setting. The fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, is a character in itself, and its locations have inspired many. From eerie forests to retro diners, the places in Hawkins have become iconic.

This article takes a look at the real-life inspirations behind these locations, giving fans a glimpse into the world that shaped *Stranger Things*.

### 1. The Eerie Woods of Hawkins

The mysterious woods of Hawkins are a major part of the series, providing the perfect backdrop for strange and unsettling happenings. These woods are inspired by real-life forests in Indiana, where dense trees and morning fog create an eerie atmosphere.

One notable example is the Hoosier National Forest. With its sprawling trails and thick foliage, it can easily make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world — much like the haunting woods featured in the show.

### 2. Retro Diners and Hangouts

The retro diners in Hawkins are a nostalgic nod to classic American hangouts from the 1980s. These spots serve as social hubs for the characters, where they bond over milkshakes, fries, and classic jukebox tunes.

The design of these diners draws inspiration from real-life establishments of that era, with their glowing neon signs, vintage decor, and cozy atmospheres that transport you back in time.

### 3. Hawkins Middle School Inspiration

Hawkins Middle School sits at the heart of many pivotal moments throughout *Stranger Things*. Its architectural style takes cues from real-life schools built in the mid-20th century.

Characterized by red brick exteriors and spacious hallways, this design reflects many American public schools of the period, lending authenticity to the show’s small-town setting.

### 4. The Iconic Hawkins Lab

The infamous Hawkins Lab is central to much of the series’ mystery and suspense. It is inspired by real-life research facilities that have long been subjects of conspiracy theories.

While the exact inspiration remains a mystery, many speculate that the lab’s design is influenced by various government research centers — known for their sterile environments, high-security measures, and secretive operations.

### 5. Charming Small-Town Vibes

What makes Hawkins particularly relatable is its quintessential small-town vibe. It’s portrayed as a close-knit community where everyone knows each other (or at least pretends to).

The town buzzes with festivals, parades, and communal events that bring the locals together, echoing the spirit of many real-life Midwestern towns famous for their strong sense of community.

*Stranger Things* masterfully blends fiction with elements inspired by real locations and cultural memories, creating a vivid world that resonates with fans around the globe. Whether it’s the eerie woods or the buzzing social scenes, Hawkins holds a special place in the hearts of viewers — grounded in reality yet filled with supernatural wonder.
