*By Snehil Singh | Oct 05, 2025, 02:14 PM*

Sonam Wangchuk, the detained climate activist and education reformer, has announced that he will remain in Jodhpur Central Jail until an independent judicial inquiry is launched into the recent killings in Ladakh.

### Background

Wangchuk was detained last month under the National Security Act (NSA) following violent protests demanding Sixth Schedule protections for Ladakh. The protests tragically resulted in four deaths due to police firing.

### Message from Prison

On Friday, Wangchuk’s lawyer, Mustafa Haji, and his elder brother, Ka Tsetan Dorjey Ley, met with him and conveyed his message to the people of Ladakh and India. Wangchuk expressed gratitude for the widespread concern and prayers, assuring everyone that he is doing well both physically and mentally.

He also extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the recent violence in Leh.

### Call for Independent Inquiry

Sonam Wangchuk has called for a transparent and independent judicial probe into the killings. He emphasized his readiness to continue staying in jail until such an inquiry is initiated and completed.

Reiterating his support for the Apex Body Leh and Kargil Democratic Alliance’s (KDA) demands, Wangchuk voiced his strong backing for Sixth Schedule status and full statehood for Ladakh. He stated, “Whatever actions Apex Body takes in the interest of Ladakh, I am with them wholeheartedly.”

### Controversy Surrounding Detention

Wangchuk’s detention has sparked widespread criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups. The Ladakh police have accused him of having links to Pakistan, and the Home Ministry has canceled his NGO’s Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) license.

Additionally, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry is currently pending against him.

Meanwhile, Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has raised concerns that she has not been allowed to meet or speak with her husband since his detention.

Federal indictment charges 3 activists with alleged ‘doxing’ of ICE agent in Los Angeles

**Three Activists Indicted for “Doxing” ICE Agent Amid Immigration Raid Protests in Los Angeles**

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Three activists opposed to President Donald Trump’s immigration raids in Los Angeles have been indicted on charges of illegally “doxing” a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, federal prosecutors announced.

According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Friday, investigators said the women followed the ICE agent home, livestreamed their pursuit, and later posted the agent’s address online. Upon arriving at the agent’s residence, prosecutors allege the women shouted, “ICE lives on your street and you should know,” according to the indictment.

The three defendants face one count each of conspiracy and publicly disclosing the personal information of a federal agent, the statement added.

Prosecutors provided details about the defendants’ status: a 25-year-old woman from Panorama City, California, is free on a $5,000 bond; a 38-year-old resident of Aurora, Colorado—also facing separate charges related to assault on a federal officer—is held in custody without bond. Authorities are still searching for the third defendant, a 37-year-old woman from Riverside, California.

“Our brave federal agents put their lives on the line every day to keep our nation safe,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli. “The conduct of these defendants is deeply offensive to law enforcement officers and their families. If you threaten, dox, or harm in any manner one of our agents or employees, you will face prosecution and prison time.”

**What is Doxing?**

Doxing refers to the malicious act of gathering private or identifying information about someone and releasing it online without their consent—often with the intent to harass, threaten, shame, or seek revenge.

Attorneys representing the women could not immediately be reached for comment on Monday. An inquiry was sent to the Federal Public Defender’s Office to determine whether its attorneys are representing the defendants.

**Details of the Incident**

According to the indictment, the three women followed the ICE agent last month from the federal building in downtown Los Angeles to the agent’s home in Baldwin Park, east of Los Angeles. The entire pursuit was livestreamed, court documents reveal.

In July, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem warned that individuals who publish personal information of federal agents could face prosecution. Her statement came after flyers circulated in Portland, Oregon, encouraging the public to collect intelligence on ICE agents.

**Context: Controversy Over ICE Enforcement Tactics**

Critics of the Trump administration’s immigration raids have expressed outrage over federal agents wearing masks and refusing to identify themselves while arresting immigrants in California. Responding to these concerns, California recently became the first state to ban most law enforcement officers—including federal immigration agents—from covering their faces while performing official duties.

The indictment and ongoing case highlight the tensions between immigration enforcement efforts and activist responses amid heightened national debate.

Family reunites as activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah returns home after 12 years in Egyptian prison

CAIRO (AP) — The downtown Cairo apartment of Alaa Abd el-Fattah was filled with laughter and joy Tuesday as family and friends gathered to absorb the long-awaited news: the pro-democracy Egyptian-British activist had finally walked free.

Abd el-Fattah was pardoned by President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and released Monday after spending almost all of the past 12 years in prison. He and five other prisoners had been pardoned after the National Council for Human Rights acted on behalf of their families, urging the president to consider their situations on humanitarian grounds.

“I felt a wave of sudden relief as if my body had been clenched tight for years and was finally loosening and just now releasing a weight that I have been carrying,” Abd el-Fattah’s sister, Sanaa Seif, told The Associated Press at the family apartment. She is one of the family members who waged an international campaign for his release.

Seif was walking her dog when the news broke that her brother had been pardoned. As her phone rang nonstop with calls and notifications, she and her family drove to Wadi Natroun prison, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) outside Cairo, to pick him up. They then received a call from a neighbor’s phone: it was Abd el-Fattah himself, telling them he had already arrived at the family’s house.

‘Wrapped by a layer of sadness’

Abd el-Fattah was first sent to prison in 2014 for participating in an unauthorized protest and allegedly assaulting a police officer, before being released in early 2019. He was arrested again in September 2019 during a security crackdown that followed rare anti-government protests in Egypt.

After more than two years in pretrial detention, an emergency security court sentenced him to five years for spreading false news. When his release date came up in September 2024, authorities refused to count his time in pretrial detention and ordered him held until January 3, 2027.

When Egypt didn’t release Abd el-Fattah last September, his mother, Laila Soueif, began her own hunger strike in Britain but became seriously ill and ended the strike in July. Soueif, a mathematics professor at Cairo University who was born in London, helped her son obtain British citizenship in 2021, hoping it would lead to his release.

Due to her deteriorating health from the hunger strike, Soueif frequently received treatment at St. Thomas’s Hospital in London. She ended the strike in July after multiple appeals from family and friends. Seif said Tuesday that her mother is “miraculously doing better” despite some lingering health issues.

Abd el-Fattah’s family is still adjusting to his freedom. His sister said she is slowly getting used to hearing her brother’s voice in the background again.

“Our happiness, no matter how huge, is wrapped by a layer of sadness because the situation [in Egypt] is bad,” Soueif said. “Real happiness will not be complete unless those unjustly detained are released.”

A family looks to the future

With Abd el-Fattah now free, his family is looking to the future. Soueif said her son will likely settle a few matters in the U.K. for the sake of his son Khaled, and that she will return to teaching at the university next week.

“I’m going back to my regular life as a faculty teaching member living in Egypt and expressing opposition against the government when I see something wrong,” she said.

Abd el-Fattah previously took part in the 2011 uprising that toppled autocratic former President Hosni Mubarak, and later was active in protests against human rights abuses and military trials of civilians.

An influential blogger, Abd el-Fattah hails from a family of political activists, lawyers, and writers. His late father was one of Egypt’s most tireless rights lawyers, his sisters — British citizens as well — are also political activists, and his aunt is the award-winning novelist Ahdaf Soueif.

Thameen Al-Kheetan, a spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, praised Egypt’s decision to release Abd el-Fattah in a statement Tuesday and called “on Egypt to ensure the release of all those arbitrarily detained.”

Rifts in Gaza flotilla? Greta Thunberg removed from leadership committee

**Rifts Emerge in Gaza Flotilla: Greta Thunberg Removed from Leadership Committee**

Greta Thunberg, the renowned Swedish climate activist, has been quietly removed from the leadership committee of the Global Sumud Flotillas. This decision comes amid internal rifts and communication challenges faced by the flotilla organizers during their mission to breach the Gaza naval blockade.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, which aims to challenge the blockade on Gaza, made a scheduled stop in Tunisia. Greta Thunberg was seen arriving at the port of Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia, as part of this effort. The flotilla paused for two days in Tunisia before setting sail again on September 10, 2025, to join the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla on its journey to Gaza.

The ongoing tensions within the flotilla’s leadership highlight the complexities of coordinating such a high-profile and politically sensitive mission. As the flotilla continues its voyage, organizers are working to resolve internal disputes to maintain their focus on challenging the naval blockade.
