10 Sci‑Fi Movies That Are Incredible From Start to Finish

A sci-fi movie or TV show only qualifies that incredible threshold for me when the plot keeps translating that idea into tension you can feel, scene after scene, without drifting into lecture mode. So it’s essentially you learning excruciatingly fascinating details of what our world could be like, perhaps with some fiction.

But the best ones make you understand the rules fast, then keep twisting those rules until you’re locked in. The ten movies below do that thing where you start watching for a minute and suddenly it’s 2 a.m. because the story never loosens its grip. Some are cold and clinical, some are emotional gut punches, and a couple are straight-up nightmares. Either way, they’re airtight rides from first frame to last.

### 10. *Ex Machina* (2014)

The first time I watched *Ex Machina*, it felt like I was being politely invited into a trap. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) thinks he won a dream trip, but every hallway at Nathan Bateman’s (Oscar Isaac) house-lab looks like it was designed to control him. Ava (Alicia Vikander) doesn’t need jump scares to be terrifying, because the real fear is how quickly she learns you.

The film follows a motivated IT enthusiast winning an internship with one of the greatest minds in the AI space, only to find out he’s hiding a close-to-human robot, but with much darker themes at play. What makes *Ex Machina* incredible is the way it keeps shifting who has power without announcing the shift. Nathan is charming, then suddenly cruel, and you realize the “test” isn’t just about Ava.

There’s suspense in the film, but it’s clean, and the ending hits hard because it’s logical.

### 9. *Gattaca* (1997)

This one grabs you with a simple, nasty idea: your future is decided by a blood sample. *Gattaca* follows Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke) as he tries to cheat a system built to keep him small, and the movie makes every routine detail feel high-stakes, from a staircase to a urine test.

Irene Cassini (Uma Thurman) adds that soft tension of romance when nobody can truly be honest. The reason *Gattaca* is an incredible addition to this list is that it never loses the human thread. Jerome Morrow (Jude Law) is the quiet heartbreak, because the perfect person is also trapped.

Director Andrew Niccol keeps the world sleek but suffocating. When I watched it for the first time, I left it feeling weirdly energized. It builds to a clean catharsis.

### 8. *Minority Report* (2002)

*Minority Report* drops you into PreCrime like it’s normal, then immediately starts poking holes in it. Basically, John Anderton (Tom Cruise) believes in the system until the system points at him, and that pivot turns the film into a sprint you can’t step away from.

You know a movie’s locked in when the chase is also a moral argument. *Minority Report* is that. Agatha (Samantha Morton) isn’t just a plot device; she’s the conscience the movie drags through chaos.

What I love about *Minority Report* is how every cool futuristic detail is also a threat. The eye-scans, the ads calling your name, the spider robots— all of it keeps tightening the vise.

The film was helmed by Steven Spielberg, who has kept the action readable even when it’s fast, and the mystery stays clear because the emotional motive never gets lost.

### 7. *Children of Men* (2006)

This isn’t the kind of sci-fi that comforts you. *Children of Men* feels like the world is already ending in the background, and everyone is just pretending the routine still matters.

Theo Faron (Clive Owen) starts numb, the way people get when the news has been bad for too long, and then the story drops a single hope into his lap and forces him to care again. The whole movie feels like a fragile mission, thanks to Kee’s character (Clare-Hope Ashitey).

What makes *Children of Men* incredible from start to finish is the immersion. It’s messy, loud, and intimate, like you’re walking inside the panic with them: the strangers helping, strangers betraying, hope refusing to die quietly.

The film also stars Julianne Moore as Julian, and here’s the cool bit—it is set in 2027, and many of the elements in the film have come true by 2026.

### 6. *Blade Runner* (1982)

Some movies don’t hook you with plot. They hook you with an atmosphere so thick you can taste it. *Blade Runner* does that and more.

It opens, and you’re already in it: rain, neon, smoke, and a future that looks tired. Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is less a hero than a guy doing a grim job, and the film makes that job feel morally dirty on purpose.

Rachael (Sean Young) is where the film gets personal, because one question turns into an identity crisis. The whole moody worldbuilding hits instantly.

What has kept *Blade Runner* incredible to this date is that it never stops asking what a “real” life is, even when the action picks up. Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) is the emotional center, and his arc is why the ending lingers.

The city feels alive and predatory, and the movie’s best moments come from quiet confrontation. This soft-haunting film is directed by Ridley Scott.

### 5. *Arrival* (2016)

This is the rare first-contact movie where the biggest action is learning. *Arrival* follows Louise Banks (Amy Adams) as she tries to communicate with aliens from outer space who don’t think like us, and the film makes that process feel urgent.

Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) brings warmth, but the tension comes from politics pressing in while the language work is still fragile.

For anyone that actually wants to watch something incredible, know that this is not loud sci-fi. The film brilliantly captures the intimate pressure that would surround us if aliens were to actually arrive in this world.

What makes *Arrival* incredible from start to finish is how the emotional reveal is also the sci-fi reveal. It’s one of the cleanest “oh. oh no” moments I’ve ever had in a theater because it re-frames everything without feeling like a trick.

Because the tone stays calm throughout the film while the stakes climb, the ending hits like acceptance, and you walk out quieter than you walked in. It’s a beautiful film through and through.

### 4. *Interstellar* (2014)

I don’t start *Interstellar* thinking about space. I start thinking about leaving and then coming back to see how the world has changed, and you will never be able to see your kids the way you might have expected.

Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) stepping away from Murph (Jessica Chastain) hurts because it feels like a promise you can’t keep, and the movie keeps returning to that wound.

What gives *Interstellar* an evergreen-incredible badge is that it commits to big swings without losing the thread. The set pieces aren’t just “cool,” they’re time, regret, and survival made visual.

Director Christopher Nolan makes the science feel tactile, but the real reason it sticks is that the movie keeps choosing sincerity over irony. When it ends, it doesn’t feel neat, it feels earned.

It aims big, lands hard, and that’s why the film is loved throughout the world.

### 3. *The Thing* (1982)

This is the kind of movie that makes you suspicious of everyone in the room.

*The Thing* drops you in Antarctica with a bunch of men who already don’t trust each other, then adds a creature that can look like anyone. R. J. MacReady (Kurt Russell) becomes the anchor because he thinks like a survivalist when paranoia is spreading like an infection.

The opening is simple, and then it just keeps tightening.

What makes *The Thing* incredible from start to finish is how it never gives you comfort. Every solution creates a new fear, and every test feels like it might fail.

The tension throughout its runtime stays brutal and the atmosphere icy, and the effects, although from 1982, still work because they’re used as punctuation, not spectacle.

The film also stars Keith David as Childs, Wilford Brimley as Dr. Blair, T. K. Carter as Nauls, and Richard Masur as Clark, among others.

### 2. *Alien* (1979)

Ridley Scott’s *Alien* is almost calm, which is exactly why it’s terrifying—but that’s just the first half.

The Nostromo feels like a proper working ship, and the crew bickers like real people who’ve done this job too long. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) isn’t positioned as “the hero” at first; she’s just the one taking protocols seriously while everyone else wants to move on.

Then the horror arrives, and the movie never relaxes again. Routine turns into a nightmare.

What makes *Alien* incredible is the precision. The creature is scary, but the bigger dread is how small the humans suddenly feel inside their own ship.

Ash (Ian Holm) is the cold surprise that deepens the paranoia, and because of Scott’s iconic work on the sets, the lighting and sound are so controlled that you feel trapped with them.

### 1. *The Matrix* (1999)

It’s hard to explain to someone now how mind-blowing *The Matrix* felt the first time, but you can still feel the jolt in the opening minutes.

Neo (Keanu Reeves) starts as a guy with that nagging “something’s off” feeling, and the movie feeds that anxiety until it becomes a full-on awakening.

Then Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) comes in and drags him into a new reality with total conviction. That’s the main hook for the film.

These ten sci-fi films master the art of tension and storytelling, making you think, feel, and stay hooked until the very end. Whether through psychological thrills, moral dilemmas, or breathtaking visuals, each movie offers an unforgettable journey into possible futures—and the humanity within them.

Andy Dick ‘Taken Home By Friend’ After Alleged Overdose, Unresponsive on the Streets of Los Angeles: LAPD

Andy Dick was reportedly taken home by a friend after suffering an apparent overdose on the streets of Hollywood, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) confirmed their response to the incident, stating, “I can confirm that we did respond to the intersection of Highland and Yucca at the 7-Eleven at 3:14 p.m. for a 59-year-old male,” though they declined to confirm the patient’s name due to HIPAA privacy laws. The spokesperson added, “We did respond to that location for an overdose. He was not transported to the hospital.”

The LAPD also confirmed their involvement, noting, “The LAPD did respond for an ambulance overdose,” but similarly declined to confirm the individual’s identity. They described the situation as “a medical emergency issue.”

Photos obtained by TMZ on Tuesday, December 9, showed the comedian slumped over a set of stairs outside a building in Hollywood as friends tried to assist him. According to TMZ, Dick later spoke to the outlet and confirmed that he was alive and okay, though he did not provide further details about the incident.

Representatives for Dick did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Andy Dick, who has three adult children — sons Lucas, 37, and Jacob, 31, and daughter Meg, 28 — has a history of struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. He has also faced legal troubles in the past. In June 2021, he was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, according to an LAPD representative, and was later released on $50,000 bail.

Dick’s former fiancée, Elisa Jordana, spoke publicly about the challenges during that period on her Kermit and Friends YouTube show. She described the week as “the worst” and said the situation was “getting worse and worse” daily. Jordana revealed she split from Dick one month after the incident in July 2021 and admitted feeling “relieved” that he was in jail, explaining, “I think a lot of the people that are around Andy are more dangerous than people in jail.”

During the live broadcast, Jordana shared several troubling anecdotes, including an incident where Dick allegedly stole cutlery, wine glasses, and plates during a dinner outing, requesting a “doggy bag” to carry the items. She also claimed that Dick got into a physical altercation involving a metal chair, which reportedly resulted in the other person being hospitalized. Referring to the fight, she stated, “He could have killed him. I knew that night wasn’t gonna end well.”

In 2017, Dick was fired from a movie following sexual harassment allegations. At the time, he addressed the accusations in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “I didn’t grope anybody. I might have kissed somebody on the cheek to say goodbye and then licked them. That’s my thing.” He denied any intent to commit sexual harassment.

Mr. BIG looks set to drum on the Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves roster’s noggins

**Mr. BIG: A Formidable Finale to Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves’ First Year of DLC**

Mr. BIG serves as an intriguing bookend to the first year of DLC for *Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves*. As the original boss from *Art of Fighting*, Mr. BIG has been a longtime menace in South Town, serving as one of Geese Howard’s chief henchmen for decades. Though his appearances in *The King of Fighters* series have been rare, his presence remains impactful.

In *City of the Wolves*, Mr. BIG shows signs of age and wisdom but still packs a mean streak, especially with his signature Eskrima sticks. Boasting a well-rounded and versatile move set, he promises to be just as formidable as ever. I had the chance to preview him and experienced firsthand just how dangerous he can be.

### BIG Style, BIG Moves

While Mr. BIG might not have the traditional privileges of an SNK boss character in *City of the Wolves*, his capabilities give plenty to be excited about. His Eskrima sticks provide reach that many other characters simply don’t have. Additionally, he features normals that advance as he backs up, alongside a satisfying jab string that can keep opponents on their toes while you strategize your next attack.

He retains much of the moveset from previous games, with a few fresh twists. His ground projectile, forward diving attack, and rapid strikes remain intact. Added to these are a solid uppercut, a command throw, and a parry special—enhancing his threat level and combat variety.

My personal favorite move is his far Heavy Punch. Mr. BIG lunges forward with a strike and can follow up with a second Heavy Punch that combos into other attacks. This move is fantastic for baiting opponents and punishing their attempts to counter. It can lead to significant damage finishes with a REV Blow, super move, or even his Hidden Gear technique.

What’s surprising is that despite having a move for nearly every situation, Mr. BIG still maintains impressive range.

### Strengths and Weaknesses

That said, there are a few notable drawbacks to Mr. BIG’s arsenal. For starters, he lacks any kicking attacks. While this means he misses out on the range other characters gain from their legs, he compensates with some of the best punching pokes and combo potential in *City of the Wolves*.

Another challenge lies in combo execution. It can be tricky to connect jump attacks into ground attacks due to a particularly tight link window—even compared to characters known for difficult jump strings. His jumping cross-up is also somewhat flimsy; you must land almost directly on your opponent for it to succeed. Attempting a cross-up improperly can result in whiffing and leaving yourself open to heavy punishment.

I also found his close Heavy Kick underwhelming. Though it hits multiple times, it didn’t open up follow-up opportunities, resulting in just quick damage where more versatile options might have delivered better results.

### Making Way for the BIG Guy

Mr. BIG undoubtedly capped off the first year of *Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves* DLC in a truly “big” way. This iteration feels like one of the best versions of the character I have played, loaded with nasty tools to pressure and punish opponents.

Whether you prefer to control the screen with his tricky projectile game, bait foes in with his heavy punches, overwhelm them with rapid strikes, or apply relentless pressure with his command throw and supers, Mr. BIG offers a robust and rewarding playstyle.

He has the potential to rival Billy Kane in terms of how imposing and annoying he can be. We’ll soon find out how he fares as he enters public matchmaking. One thing is certain: Mr. BIG rounds out *City of the Wolves*’ first season of character DLC in style.

*These impressions are based on an early preview of the game using a pre-release version of the character. Mr. BIG will be available on all platforms as part of the paid Season Pass 1 DLC series for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.*

Harrison Ford’s First Role After ‘Star Wars’ Was This Forgotten World War II Legacy Sequel Thriller That Deserves Your Attention

The concept of a “legacy sequel” is often thought to be a modern phenomenon, but Hollywood has long aimed to capitalize on proven hits. One notable example is *The Guns of Navarone*, a massive success that spurred enthusiasm for the World War II adventure genre and earned seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

While too much time had passed for original stars Gregory Peck and David Niven to reprise their roles, *Force 10 From Navarone* was conceived as a loose sequel introducing a new cast and drawing from additional source material by author Alistair MacLean. Although it didn’t quite reach the critical heights of its predecessor, the film featured an early appearance by Harrison Ford, in his first role after debuting as Han Solo in *Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope*.

### A Nostalgic Return to World War II Adventure

By 1978, the world was still grappling with the aftermath of World War II, but Hollywood recognized the creative potential of stories centered on heroism and exceptionalism. With Cold War politics complicating public sentiment, films set in the 1940s offered audiences a clear and approachable narrative of good versus evil.

*Force 10 From Navarone* acts as a throwback to the first generation of World War II films produced during and immediately after the war—films that left no ambiguity about how audiences should feel. While this sequel could have been dismissed as a cash grab, it is elevated by a terrific ensemble cast and gripping storytelling.

### Classic Characters Reimagined

Major Keith Mallory and Staff Sergeant John Miller, originally portrayed by Gregory Peck and David Niven, were recast with Robert Shaw and Edward Fox in *Force 10 From Navarone*. The film acknowledges being set shortly after the events of *The Guns of Navarone*, with Mallory and Miller tasked with a new mission: tracking down the elusive German spy Captain Lescovar, played by Franco Nero, who betrayed critical information to the Axis Powers.

Harrison Ford stars as Lieutenant Colonel Mike Barnsby, an American military veteran leading his own group of commandos. Initially, tensions arise between the American and British soldiers due to differing perspectives on warfare, but they find common ground in their shared goal of eliminating any Nazi opposition.

### Action-Packed Direction by Guy Hamilton

Unlike its predecessor, praised for realistic combat depictions, *Force 10 From Navarone* embraces the style of a contemporary action film. Directed by Guy Hamilton, a veteran of the James Bond franchise known for classics like *Goldfinger* and *Live and Let Die*, the movie is packed with creative set pieces and visual effects.

An opening heist scene where Barnsby helps steal a Royal Air Force bomber sets the tone, and the film concludes on a high note with a spectacular explosion of an enemy bridge. While respectful of the sacrifices made by real veterans fighting fascism, the film presents its soldier characters as the cool, adventure-hero types reminiscent of 1940s television serials.

### A Stellar ‘70s Ensemble Cast

As an ensemble action movie, *Force 10 From Navarone* depends heavily on its cast—and it delivers. Robert Shaw, who tragically passed away shortly before the film’s release, gives a gripping, tough-as-nails performance, riding high off his success as Quint in *Jaws*.

Harrison Ford is a standout as the quick-witted, risk-taking commando, often overshadowing the heroes. His involvement was crucial to the film’s appeal, especially since the original *Star Wars* trilogy was deeply inspired by World War II aerial photography—making it natural for young viewers to want to see Ford in a similar wartime role.

Although historical accuracy was not the film’s priority, *Force 10 From Navarone* deserves credit for acknowledging the contributions of women and minorities during the war. Barbara Bach shines as a spy relaying vital information to Miller, while Carl Weathers delivers a memorable performance as the squad’s sole African-American member.

### Reception and Legacy

Upon its initial release, *Force 10 From Navarone* was not a box office success. Audiences were beginning to shift away from war cinema toward the burgeoning popularity of science fiction, with hits like *Close Encounters of the Third Kind*, *Superman: The Movie*, and *Star Trek: The Motion Picture* dominating the landscape.

Released the same year as the grittier war epic *The Deer Hunter*, this film’s old-fashioned approach felt somewhat out of step. Nevertheless, *Force 10 From Navarone* embraced its pulp-entertainment roots with fast pacing and straightforward storytelling.

While comparisons to *The Guns of Navarone* may be unfair, this sequel stands strong as a populist adventure film, accessible even to viewers unfamiliar with the original.

### Why Watch *Force 10 From Navarone*?

Though not Harrison Ford’s most iconic role, *Force 10 From Navarone* lets him deliver cool lines and take on Nazis—which is reason enough to give it a watch. The film combines thrilling action, a talented cast, and nostalgic wartime adventure that continues to entertain.

For those interested, *Force 10 From Navarone* is currently available to stream on Tubi in the U.S.

*Force 10 From Navarone* remains a fascinating artifact of its era—a mix of classic storytelling and 1970s action sensibilities, reminding us of Hollywood’s enduring love for tales of wartime heroism.

How to get Ghost Flowers in Ghost of Yotei

To get Ghost Flowers, you will need to be playing in New Game Plus, which means you will have to have finished the main story at least once. Once that is done, you will be able to start an NG+ run from the main menu. NG+ mode is pretty traditional in that you will keep your equipment and unlocks, but you will also get access to NG+ exclusive features, such as a new vendor who takes Ghost Flowers as currency. You can find the Merchant just to the northwest of your home in the Yotei Grasslands. To get Ghost Flowers, you will need to complete main quests and side quests in the story, so get stuck into the exciting narrative of Ghost of Yotei. Doing bounties for Kojiro the Bounty Broker will also earn you Ghost Flowers, as will unlocking Altars of Reflection. You will get some for each Altar you unlock, so don’t forget to visit them all again on your new run. The vendor, Masujio the Melodious, will sell charms that can also grant these flowers. They will usually come with some sort of curse as a tradeoff, such as an increase in Stamina costs, and result in a chance to get flowers from killing enemies. These are the Charm of Curse Spirit, Charm of Misfortune, and Charm of Frailty. They essentially allow you to trade less value drops in NG+ for the chance to get Ghost Flowers.
