Skywatch: Interstellar comet on track to pass by sun

Multiple Mauna Kea observatories have been closely observing 3I/ATLAS, an interstellar comet that originated from beyond our solar system. This remarkable object was discovered by the ATLAS survey telescope in Chile. Notably, 3I/ATLAS is only the third known object confirmed to have come from interstellar space — hence the “3I” designation in its name. (The first known interstellar object, ‘Oumuamua, was discovered and named in Hawaii.)

Throughout the summer, several observations of 3I/ATLAS were conducted from Mauna Kea. However, in November, the comet will pass too close to the Sun for ground-based observatories to study it effectively. Fortunately, 3I/ATLAS will become visible again in December, allowing astronomers to continue their study of this fascinating visitor from outer space. Eventually, the comet will leave our solar system, never to return.

### Special Events

Through November, the spectacular Leonids meteor shower will light up our night skies with shooting stars. These meteors originate from the tail of comet Tempel-Tuttle, a periodic comet that last passed through Earth’s orbit in 1998. The peak of the Leonids shower will occur on November 17-18, during which observers may see up to 10 meteors per hour.

### Evening Observing

Near the center of the sky, look for **Kalupeakawelo**, also known as the “Kite of Kawelo.” This is one of the four great navigational starlines identified by the Polynesian Voyaging Society. At the heart of this starline lies the famous **Great Square of Pegasus**, symbolizing the body of a kite flying high overhead.

To the north of the Great Square are the “W” shape of **‘Iwakeli‘i** and the houselike shape of **Kamo‘i**. The starline also connects with some of the brightest stars visible in the southern fall sky.

According to legend, Kawelo was a Kauai chief and hero known for excelling in many athletic competitions. In a kite-flying contest with his cousin, Kauahoa, Kawelo skillfully twisted, turned, and leapt his kite, causing both kites to become entangled. Kauahoa’s kite string broke and was carried away by the wind. Although Kawelo feared punishment from his larger cousin, Kauahoa instead blamed the wind. Spectators interpreted this event as a sign of Kawelo’s supernatural power.

### Morning Observing

Before sunrise, behind Jupiter, you can observe the Milky Way along with the navigational star family called **Kekaomakali‘i**, known as the “Bailer of Makali‘i.”

Enjoy the wonders of the night sky this season!

Dodgers fans credit Jonas Brothers for saving World Series Game 2

Last season, the New York Yankees’ ill-conceived decision to have Fat Joe perform at the World Series crushed morale, paving the way for the Los Angeles Dodgers to win the title. This year, the Dodgers could have the Jonas Brothers to thank if the team repeats as champions.

Fans tuning in to Game 2 of the Fall Classic on Saturday were surprised to see a concert break out between innings. After MLB’s Stand Up to Cancer tribute, the camera cut to a stage in the right field stands. The Jonas Brothers were introduced to an unsuspecting public, and it became clear that the World Series would be on hold while they performed a song.

The Brothers Jonas Merv, Stu, and Freddy (we’re still fact-checking those names) did, in fact, perform. But some viewers were still confused by their presence. A pre-sixth inning concert is not traditionally part of baseball. Even Fat Joe had the good sense to embarrass an entire fanbase before the game started.

However, some Dodgers fans credit the Jonas Brothers’ performance with saving the team’s season.

### Dodgers Bounce Back with Game 2 World Series Win

The Toronto Blue Jays took Game 1 thanks to a historic sixth-inning surge. An uncharacteristically poor pitching performance put Los Angeles in an early 0-1 hole against a dangerous Blue Jays team. Derek Jeter called Game 2 a “must-win” for the Dodgers.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto stepped up for LA with another gem. But Toronto’s ace Kevin Gausman was also dealing. The pair made MLB history as the first starters to each retire 17+ straight batters in a postseason game.

Yamamoto and Gausman were locked in a 1-1 pitchers’ duel as both teams looked for an edge. And then the Jonas Brothers appeared.

After the odd inning-changeover performance, everything fell apart for the Blue Jays. Gausman gave up solo homers to Will Smith and Max Muncy as the Dodgers took a 3-1 lead. LA then went up 5-1 in the eighth inning. Yamamoto went the distance, and the Dodgers took Game 2.

With the series shifting to Los Angeles for Game 3, the Dodgers have momentum on their side. And fans credited the Jonas Brothers for the team’s good fortune.

### Fan Reactions

Cody Snavely wrote:
“Where were you when the Jonas Brothers saved the Dodgers’ season?”

Humongous ChiChis answered:
“Complaining in my kitchen pacing around like a maniac while the first half time show in baseball was being played.”

Dave Albrecht added:
“Welp, @MLBONFOX just reminded me why I haven’t watched baseball religiously in several years. A mid-game Jonas Brothers performance to derail a pitcher’s duel in the World Series is actually insane. Get a clue @MLB!”

Whether you loved or hated the surprise concert, one thing is clear: the Jonas Brothers’ unexpected appearance has become one of the most talked-about moments of this World Series.

Russian overnight attack on Ukraine’s Kyiv kills at least 3, wounds dozens

At least three people have been killed and dozens wounded in an overnight Russian air attack on Kyiv, according to the mayor of the Ukrainian capital, as Russia’s war on Ukraine approaches its four-year mark.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Sunday that “several” Russian drones were operating over the city, and warned people to “remain in shelters.”

“According to preliminary information, three people died and 27 were wounded (including 6 children),” Klitschko wrote later on Telegram, adding that all had received medical attention and some had been hospitalized.

He said drone fragments fell onto a nine-storey residential building in the northeastern Desnyansky district, sparking fires in apartments on several floors. “The fire has already been extinguished. Work is ongoing to dismantle the structures,” Klitschko wrote.

Fragments also damaged another nine-floor block in the same district, where five people were rescued. He added that “dismantling of structures is ongoing.”

More drone fragments fell on a 16-storey residential block in the northern Obolonsky district, damaging an apartment. “There are no fires or structural collapses,” Klitschko said.

The full scale of the damage and size of the attack were not immediately known. Kyiv and its surrounding region were under air raid alerts for about 1.5 hours before the air force called them off at about 00:30 GMT.

Both sides deny targeting civilians in their attacks on each other’s territory. However, thousands have been killed in the war that Russia started with its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the vast majority of them Ukrainian, including many civilians.

The attacks came a day after other Russian drone and missile strikes killed four people—two of them in Kyiv—and wounded more than a dozen across Ukraine, according to Ukrainian authorities.

On Saturday, former United States President Donald Trump played down prospects of a summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, saying he was “not going to be wasting [his] time.”

The remarks came as Kremlin negotiator Kirill Dmitriev met with Trump administration officials, including special envoy Steve Witkoff, a Russian source familiar with the talks told the AFP news agency. The discussions were expected to continue on Sunday.

Earlier this week, the US and the European Union announced new sweeping sanctions on Russian energy aimed at crippling Moscow’s war economy. Putin said he would not bend to pressure from the West.

“No self-respecting country and no self-respecting people ever decides anything under pressure,” he said, calling the US sanctions an “unfriendly act.”
