Meet the ‘King of K-pop’: This U.S.-educated computer engineer pioneered music industry practices that fueled the genre’s global expansion

He was discussing the title of Amazon Prime’s documentary about his career. The producers insisted the bolder moniker would resonate better with American audiences. After some back-and-forth, Lee relented. “I had to follow their decision.” The compromise speaks to Lee’s pragmatic approach to breaking South Korean acts into the American mainstream—a three-decade quest that often required him to bend but never break his vision.

Now, as the founder of SM Entertainment and widely credited as the architect of K-pop’s global expansion, Lee will be inducted into the Asian Hall of Fame on Saturday alongside basketball legend Yao Ming, Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan, and rock icon Yoshiki, among others.

Lee remains a prominent but controversial figure in K-pop history. His label pioneered the industry’s intensive training system, recruiting performers as young as elementary school age and putting them through years of rigorous preparation. Some of his artists have challenged their contracts as unfair, sparking broader debates about industry practices.

The recognition arrives as Lee reemerges into the spotlight after a contentious, high-profile departure from the agency he founded in 1995—a management battle that included a public feud with his nephew-in-law and a bidding war over his shares.

He’s been keeping busy since, debuting a new band, A2O MAY, in both China and the U.S. He’s also investing in a boutique Chinese firm’s high-tech production technologies.

Born in South Korea, Lee studied computer engineering in the U.S. for his master’s degree. That technical background would later inform his approach to everything from visualization and cutting-edge production technologies—he said he’s been rewatching *The Matrix* to revisit filming techniques—to pioneering elaborate “worldviews” and virtual avatars for his K-pop bands.

For Lee, the Hall of Fame honor “confirms that K-pop has become a genre that the mainstream is now paying attention to,” an acceptance that came after costly lessons and years of trial and error.

### When America Wasn’t Ready for K-pop

Lee invested about $5 million in BoA’s 2009 American debut with “Eat You Up,” one of the first songs by a South Korean artist to be primarily written and produced by Western producers. It was a bold early attempt to bring K-pop into the U.S. mainstream.

But with few widely recognized Asian artists in American pop culture at the time, the market wasn’t ready. After nearly two years, BoA—already a megastar in Korea and Japan—decided to return home. The experience, Lee has said, left him with lasting regrets.

“When I asked the songwriter(s) to revise ‘Eat You Up,’ they refused,” Lee recalled. “If we had changed it, I believe it would have achieved much better results.”

### Sourcing the World’s Best Songs for K-pop

That setback taught Lee that K-pop needed to source global talent while maintaining creative control to adapt songs for the worldwide market. His quest for the perfect tracks took him worldwide.

“I once heard a song that was so good I couldn’t let it go,” he said, recalling the track that would later become “Dreams Come True” for S.E.S., the late-1990s girl group. “I could’ve bought the license to the song in South Korea, Hong Kong, or Sweden. But I wanted to play it safe, so I found the Finnish address, went to meet the songwriter directly, wrote up a contract, and brought it back.”

At the time, top Western songwriters prioritized Japan, the world’s second-largest music market. “European songwriters were willing to sell to Asia,” Lee explained. “That’s how we eventually built a system where music from Europe, Asia, and America could come together.”

### Fictional Universes that Keep Fans Hooked

That fusion became K-pop’s signature. Lee also helped to pioneer another innovation: elaborate fictional universes, or “worldviews,” for groups like EXO and aespa—a storytelling approach that would later be adopted across the industry, including by groups like BTS.

The concept emerged during his time in the U.S., where he witnessed MTV transform music into a visual medium.

“But we only have three or four minutes,” he said. “How do we express dramatic, cinematic elements in such a short time?”

Lee’s solution was to create ongoing narratives that unfold across multiple music videos and releases—think Marvel’s cinematic universe, but for pop groups. Unable to attract established screenwriters, Lee developed the storylines himself.

The strategy proved prescient: These interconnected narratives give global fans reason to follow groups across comebacks, waiting for the next chapter in an unfolding saga.

### Focused on Asia’s Potential

Despite K-pop’s global success, Lee remains focused on Asia’s potential. He envisions South Korea as a creative hub where international talent learns production.

“Korea should become the country of producers,” he said.

With the Asia-Pacific region home to more than half the world’s population, he sees it as entertainment’s inevitable future center. His latest venture with A2O MAY, which operates in both China and the U.S., is testing that vision in one of Asia’s most challenging markets.

China’s entertainment landscape has grown increasingly restrictive, with Beijing recently cracking down on “effeminate” male celebrities and youth culture. Asked about potential political risks, Lee dismissed concerns.

“Political risk? I don’t really know much about that,” he said. He said he aims to elevate South Korea’s cultural influence as a center of production while meeting China’s needs as it seeks to expand its soft power alongside economic dominance.

“Culturally, does China need what we do? I believe they do.”

### Addressing K-pop’s Darker Aspects

The documentary also addressed darker aspects of K-pop close to Lee’s heart, including the suicides of SM Entertainment artists. He traces the problem to anonymous and malicious online comments that often evade accountability, especially when posted on servers outside South Korea’s jurisdiction—calling it a global issue requiring international cooperation.

Lee advocates for worldwide standards on user verification and mediation systems where victims could identify attackers without expensive legal battles.

But Lee resists the media’s focus on K-pop’s problems.

“Should we always weigh the dark side equally with the bright side, the future?” he asked. “Media should consider whether K-pop represents more future or more past that holds us back. Rather than just discussing the dark side and dragging us down by clinging to the past, shouldn’t we talk more about the future?”

After more than three decades, Lee’s definition remains straightforward: “K-pop is a new language of communication that transcends barriers. These languages move around naturally—what you can’t stop is culture.”

Here are some of my favorite third-party apps for iPhone and Mac

I recently shared my top ten list of Apple and non-Apple tech. This time, I’m following up with some of my favorite third-party apps for iPhone and Mac.

In putting this piece together, I realized that I don’t often use apps purely for entertainment. On both iPhone and Mac, the vast majority of my choices perform a useful function.

### iPhone Apps

**CityMapper**
Both Apple Maps and Google Maps have improved over the years at helping navigate cities using public transit. Many cities also have their own transit authority apps. However, when it comes to traveling, you can’t beat the convenience of a single app with a familiar user interface that works across many different cities.

Citymapper supports walking and cycling as well as all the various types of public transit options within a city. It has also proved extremely reliable in my experience, especially when it comes to being aware of delays and closures that might affect your journey.

**Beeline**
My one exception for entertainment is Beeline, which I use for cycling. It leverages crowdsourced ratings for cycling routes to help find preferred paths, and this can make a big difference.

I also love the compass mode for those times when I have a destination but want to allow serendipity to take me there. In this mode, you get a single arrow pointing directly toward your destination, allowing you to wind your way through back streets, always heading roughly in the right direction but without strict turn-by-turn directions.

**Blackmagic Camera**
As the owner of two Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K units, it’s no surprise that the company’s iPhone app is my favorite way to shoot video on the device. Blackmagic Design is a genius at allowing full control over your shooting while keeping the user interface minimalist and logical.

The iPhone app UI closely mirrors the company’s hardware controls. For times when I don’t have time for full manual control and need run-and-gun shooting, I use **Final Cut Camera** as an alternative. It is just as easy to use as the stock camera app but allows you to record directly to an external SSD.

**Libby**
I do include one pure entertainment app: Libby. This app lets you borrow ebooks and audiobooks from your local library. Popular new releases often require joining a waiting list, but it can save you a significant amount of money compared to purchasing books.

For me, one huge advantage is being willing to try books where the purchase price might seem like too much of a gamble. Libby makes exploring new reads easier and more affordable.

**Awesome Habits**
Trying to form new habits—whether exercising more, sticking to a calorie-controlled diet, reading more books, journaling, or just taking a daily walk—can be much easier than sticking to them daily.

The Awesome Habits app is a simple but highly effective way to track how well you maintain your daily goals. Once you’ve entered your habits, the app displays a badge counter showing how many habits you haven’t completed yet each day. This acts as a constant reminder to open the app and check what is left to do.

### Mac Apps

**Aqua Voice**
I’ve only been using Aqua Voice for a couple of months, but it has quickly become my absolute favorite Mac utility. It is an incredibly accurate voice dictation service that has revolutionized how I use my Mac.

(Check out my full piece on Aqua Voice for more information.) For now, suffice it to say that I am dictating this article, as I do most of my work these days.

**PhraseExpress**
When TextExpander moved to a subscription model, I looked for alternatives and found PhraseExpress. This is the app I’ve been using ever since. It lets me maintain a large collection of standard macro texts that I can insert with just a few key presses.

It is worth noting that PhraseExpress is a port of a Windows app, so the user interface looks somewhat dated. But it more than makes up for that in functionality.

**NordVPN**
VPN apps obviously offer protection when using public Wi-Fi hotspots, but they serve some other important purposes for me as well.

As a UK-based writer for a predominantly American site, I often need to ensure I’m viewing the US version of websites. Connecting to a US server via VPN is an easy way to do this.

Additionally, some TV shows and movies are available on US streaming services but not in the UK. Using a VPN generally allows me to watch these programs.

NordVPN is my preferred service for a couple of reasons:
– **Privacy:** NordVPN keeps no logs and undergoes third-party audits to verify this.
– **Reliability:** It has consistently been the most reliable service in staying ahead in the cat-and-mouse game between streaming services and VPNs. On the rare occasions an IP address gets detected by a streaming service, switching servers or trying again the next day usually works.

**Scrivener**
In my view, Scrivener is hands-down the best writing app ever created. It’s been over a decade since I first reviewed it here, but everything I said then still applies today.

Scrivener is fantastic for structuring your writing. It allows easy switching between different sections or viewing more than one section at the same time.

I also love how I can keep all my research, notes, saved webpages, and everything else I might need, all within the same app as my writing.

I’ve used Scrivener to write three novels and am currently using it for a non-fiction book. I wouldn’t dream of writing a book in anything else.

What are some of your favorite third-party iPhone and Mac apps? Please share your recommendations in the comments below!

A Cat Roster of Cuties Ranked From Least to Most Funny

Humor is subjective, but that being said, here at I Can Has Cheezburger, we’re making the executive decision for you to rank these cat memes in order of least to most funny.

Humor is a saving grace for many; through life’s tumults and absurdity, we always have laughter to distract us from existential thoughts, broken hearts, and government crises.

Cats basically rule the internet—they’re moderators of the technological world and a great source of entertainment for most people. For cat lovers, this is especially true.

Whether they’re sitting like loaves, pulling the most dramatic faces they possibly can, staring into space like someone possessed, or simply existing with chaotic grace, cats have mastered the art of unintentional comedy.

So, in the spirit of feline fandom and a little harmless ranking, we present a roster of adorable cuties—graded not by beauty (because every cat is stunning), but by how much they make us laugh.

Time travel, Vegas style: RetroEscapes to open with nostalgic twist

Dust off your neon leg warmers and get ready for a blast from the past—Las Vegas is about to get a nostalgia overload. RetroEscapes, a retro-themed amusement park spanning the 1950s through the 1990s, is set to open its gates, promising rides, attractions, dining, shopping, and entertainment that celebrate five iconic decades.

Visitors can look forward to immersive experiences such as a 1950s Elvis diner, a ’60s Rocket Bar, a ’70s disco, an ’80s video game arcade, and a ’90s skate park. The park’s centerpiece, the Fountain of Youth, will host nightly fireworks and laser shows spotlighting American pop culture legends.

According to the park’s founders, Daniel Leo Jr. and Sr., the goal is to let guests “relive the eras they love while creating new memories for younger generations.” Designed by PGAV Destinations—the creative team behind Disney World’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and SeaWorld’s Manta rollercoaster—the park has been in development for seven years and is already generating excitement.

What makes RetroEscapes particularly unique is its location. Instead of traditional theme park hubs like California or Florida, Las Vegas was chosen to blend nostalgia with the city’s reputation for spectacle and entertainment.

Although an official opening date hasn’t been announced yet, RetroEscapes is attracting attention for its distinctive concept and Instagram-ready attractions. For anyone looking to time-travel without leaving the present, this retro amusement park promises a colorful, quirky, and thoroughly entertaining escape.

Your first guess for the new hurdle is often the answer to the previous one, which may offer additional clues or sometimes none at all, depending on the words.

For the final hurdle, all correct answers from the previous rounds are displayed, with correct and misplaced letters clearly highlighted. It’s important to note that the number of times a letter appears highlighted in earlier guesses does not necessarily indicate how many times that letter appears in the final word.

Trump inherited a weaponized justice system The President’s vigorous effort to call to account those who waged lawfare against him is a necessary purgative Roger Kimball

Has Donald Trump “weaponized” the justice system to go after his political enemies? The answer is no.

“What about former FBI director James Comey?” you ask. “What about New York Attorney General Letitia James?” Both went after Trump hammer and tongs. Now both have been indicted by the Trump Justice Department. Are those not textbook cases of “weaponization,” of “retribution,” of using the power of the system to punish people who have punished you?

Hold on.

I write this in mid-October. By the time you read it, I suspect that the list of indictments will be much longer. Candidates for inclusion on this Ko-Ko-like “little list” include John Bolton, national security advisor during Trump’s first term; Jack Smith, the special counsel who managed to rack up 37 indictments against Trump in two criminal cases; and sundry other former intelligence officers and Department of Justice officials. The dragnet will be large; it will be relentless.

So haven’t I just admitted that Trump weaponized the justice system? No. Trump didn’t weaponize the justice system. He inherited a weaponized justice system. More on that shortly.

First, here’s another little list: Peter Navarro, Steve Bannon, Mike Flynn, Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Mark Meadows, Sidney Powell, Jenna Ellis, Jeffrey Clark, and George Papadopoulos. That’s a very incomplete roster of Trump aides and supporters who were indicted, prosecuted, disbarred, and/or jailed.

That list does not include the more than 1,200 people convicted over the January 6 protest at the Capitol. Nor does it capture a contrast that Navarro describes in a post on X: “I was dragged through Reagan Airport in leg irons, mug shot, handcuffs, jail cell, the full circus. Meanwhile, Comey faces felonies up to 10 years for the worst political conspiracy in modern history, and he slips quietly through a side door.”

Responding to demands that Comey be subjected to the humiliation of a “perp walk,” Trump’s FBI Director Kash Patel said there would be “no drama.” But the FBI that Trump inherited specialized in such drama. Remember their guns-drawn, dawn raid to arrest his confidant Roger Stone? The tipped-off media were there in force to lap up and regurgitate the entertainment. That’s one element of the system Trump inherited.

Another has to do with the courts. Trump and his allies faced kangaroo courts, kangaroo juries, and a kangaroo media. All are Democrat specialties. There are certainly places in the US where judges, or at least juries, favor conservatives. But is there any analogue to Manhattan or Washington, DC, where the name “Trump” guarantees conviction and hectoring media obloquy? There is not.

The cases that Letitia James and Alvin Bragg brought against Trump in New York were patently ridiculous. But had the President not won re-election, he would be facing a $500 million fine, the destruction of his business empire, and decades in jail—all to a hallelujah chorus of media self-congratulation. At the moment, that media has shifted into a minor key, not crowing but spewing threnodies about “selective prosecution,” “lawfare,” “retribution,” and of course “weaponization.”

Yet Trump could never deploy the sort of judicial and media vendetta that had been organized against him. Republicans lack the kangaroos.

In March, I wrote here about deterrence, not as a feature of military strategy but as a part of political wisdom more generally. The attack on Trump and his allies, I noted, was only incidentally directed at those individuals. Writ large, it was aimed at undermining the very things they claimed to be supporting: “our democracy” and the rule of law.

From that perspective, I said:

> The Trump administration’s efforts to restore fiscal sanity, accountability, and common sense to the workings of government will seem like retaliation or retribution only to those who have betrayed those values. For them, the closure of redundant or malevolent agencies, the exposure of financial wrongdoing and incompetence, the revocation of tolerance for illegal migrants who prey on US citizens will seem simply punitive.

It is punitive because it is in response to egregious wrongdoing. But in the long term, such masculine policies will function less as a punitive expedient than as a deterrent.

The press is full of caterwauling headlines about Trump’s “vindictive,” “weaponized” prosecutions. But if you step back, such imprecations ring hollow. For one thing, as the commentator “Cynical Publius” noted: “James charged Trump with nonsense; Trump charged James with a verifiable crime.” The same is true of Comey. The same will be true of the rogues’ gallery of anti-Trumpists destined for the courts.

After she got done running for office on a platform of suing Trump and calling him “illegitimate,” James dusted off her oratory:

> “When powerful people cheat to get better loans, it comes at the expense of hardworking people. Everyday Americans cannot lie to a bank to get a mortgage, and if they did, our government would throw the book at them. There simply cannot be different rules for different people.”

That was before it was revealed that James lied to a bank to get a lower interest rate on a mortgage.

Here is the moral of the story.

Deterrence works only because there lurks in the background a credible threat of retaliation. Before Trump, Republicans were too lily-livered to mount any such threat.

Would it be better if an incoming administration did not set about indicting its predecessors? Yes. Which is why the President’s vigorous effort to call to account those who waged lawfare against him is a necessary purgative. If vigorously pursued, it may just reset the conventions and courtesies of our political life.
