Federal judge orders SF ICE building to improve ‘inhumane’ conditions immediately

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Effective immediately, the Ninth Circuit court is requiring the Department of Justice to improve conditions inside the ICE holding cells at 630 Sansome in San Francisco. “It’s a huge win for immigrant communities in San Francisco that have been terrorized by this administration,” said Jordan Wells, Program Director of Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of SF. The ruling is following a lawsuit filed earlier this month by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of San Francisco and other groups. It challenged the Trump administration’s policies that allow ICE to arrest immigrants when they show up at the building for court. “ICE itself understood for years that it cannot keep people there overnight or for multiple nights, but around late spring, ICE began holding people overnight and then for multiple nights,” said Wells. MORE: Is Border Patrol using license plate cameras to monitor drivers in Bay Area? Here’s what we know The lawsuit points to conditions that are categorized as inhumane including mats that are often too small for detainees’ bodies, and “very dirty. Unsanitary conditions” with toilets that were not cleaned for multiple days, described as “very dirty” and filling the room with odor. The suit also points to “overcrowded” cells with multiple detainees sleeping “one foot of space between them, in order to avoid sleeping next to the open toilet.” University of San Francisco Professor Bill Hing has been going inside the facility since 1970 and described the building as an office building, not a detention facility. MORE: Bay Area citizenship classes see surge in interest as government cuts funding, ICE arrests continue “Several months ago, when they started detaining people there, I and other people who are very familiar with the building were wondering, wait a minute where are they keeping people? And then, some people were able to get out, and other people were transferred to other detention centers. We found out that they have no beds,” said Professor Hing. Earlier this year, three San Francisco supervisors were allowed into the federal building. One of them was Supervisor Dorsey who said his tour was limited to the court room. “The federal government should be doing a job that reflects the values of the United States of America, and not to put people into inhumane and cruel conditions. We are better than that as a country, and I’m grateful that the Ninth Circuit ordered the Trump administration to do better,” said Supervisor Dorsey. The federal building will now need to provide access to bedding for people who are detained overnight, keep the rooms at a reasonable temperature and conduct a basic medical screening among other changes.

‘Uncontrollable rage’: Trump calls for ‘no talent’ Seth Meyers to be fired after criticism

Donald Trump on Saturday declared war on yet another late-night TV host. Over the weekend, the former president took to Truth Social, his own social media platform, to lash out at Seth Meyers.

“NBC’s Seth Meyers is suffering from an incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS),” Trump wrote.

“He was viewed last night in an uncontrollable rage, likely due to the fact that his ‘show’ is a Ratings DISASTER.”

Trump didn’t stop there. He added, “Aside from everything else, Meyers has no talent, and NBC should fire him, IMMEDIATELY!”

West Palm Beach officer befriends homeless woman, offers food and new shelter

**South Florida Officer Goes Above and Beyond to Help Homeless Woman in West Palm Beach**

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) — A South Florida police officer lent a helping hand to a woman who was in desperate need of support. West Palm Beach Police Officer Gesner Michel went above and beyond to assist a homeless woman facing difficult times.

While on duty, Officer Michel, who finds his work fulfilling, met the woman and immediately befriended her. “You wake up every morning and you know you’re meeting new people and you get a chance to give people hope,” he said. “I made contact with that person—let me rephrase—not person, my new friend.”

The woman shared that she was looking for a job but was struggling to make progress. That’s when Officer Michel stepped in to give her that extra boost of encouragement. “Hope is giving someone that extra boost, that extra chance, you know, just to say, ‘Hey, it’s not that I hope things get better, I know things will get better,’” he explained.

Showing compassion, Officer Michel took her out for a warm meal. “We’re going to get you some food, OK? It’s on me today. I feel good today. You’re making me happy, so I’m going to make you even more happy,” he told her.

During their time together, Michel helped the woman obtain a new identification card and even found her a place to sleep for the night. “At least we know we got a bed, right? Did I not say we weren’t going to get something?” the officer joked with her.

The woman was deeply grateful for his kindness and assistance. “She was just so grateful. She was surprised, you know, that I took the time to help her and I told her it was not a problem, it’s normal for me,” said Michel.

Looking ahead, Officer Michel is now focused on helping his new friend secure a job. “She says she’s a really good waitress, so if anyone in West Palm Beach would like to hire somebody, she’ll be ready,” he said.

Officer Michel hopes to continue making a positive impact in his community. “‘Cause I live by paying it forward,” he shared.

Michel has proudly served with the West Palm Beach Police Department for seven years.

Nebraska Women’s Basketball Dominates Samford 80-46

Nebraska seemed to pick up right where they left off last game, but instead of Claire Johnson and Britt Prince, it was Jessica Petrie and Britt Prince leading the charge. That’s the great thing about this team and the depth they have—it can be anyone’s night. You know Prince is going to get her points, but who will be the one to step up as well? It will be interesting to see this year, especially when everyone is back from injuries.

Starting lineups were the same as the last game with Prince, Callin Hake, Hailey Weaver, Petra Bozan, and Petrie. Logan Nissley was also in street clothes, though the reason for this was unclear. If anyone has information, feel free to share in the comments.

### First Quarter

Nebraska started out strong on defense. The Huskers took the ball down the court, and Petra Bozan knocked down a three-pointer assisted by Hailey Weaver. Weaver then drove to the hoop for a bucket, followed by a block on the defensive end—a solid series for her so far.

Britt Prince got a two-point basket, and immediately after, Jessica Petrie had a chance at a three-point play but missed the free throw, putting Nebraska up 9-0.

Claire Johnson, the Samford transfer, checked into the game for the first time. Petrie quickly accumulated six points, prompting Samford to call a timeout with 5:39 left in the first quarter, Nebraska leading 13-0.

Samford came out of the timeout and drained a three, but Petrie responded with one of her own and was perfect from the floor, up to 9 points on 4-for-4 shooting.

Defensively, Callin Hake was doing what she does best—getting a steal and assisting Amiah Hargrove on a basket to extend Nebraska’s lead to 18-3. The Huskers forced their second shot clock violation of the night; the defense looked as strong as advertised.

However, Nebraska then went on a familiar scoring drought of nearly three minutes. During this stretch, Callin Hake took a charge—something Nebraska fans know all too well.

Kennadi Williams was fouled and went to the free-throw line, splitting the pair. After a Samford turnover, Bozan hit a baseline fadeaway jumper to end the quarter with Nebraska leading 21-5.

### Second Quarter

Britt Prince started the second quarter with a tough floater, immediately followed by a steal and score. Nebraska had already forced Samford into 13 turnovers with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Jessica Petrie was hustling all over the court, not only tallying 11 points but also saving the ball from going out of bounds leading to a Prince bucket, pushing the lead to 29-5.

The game was being played at a fast pace. Petrie continued to dominate, putting Nebraska up by 23 points with 4:43 left before a Samford timeout.

Claire Johnson, who scored 21 points in the last game, remained scoreless so far tonight.

Samford made a small run with free throws and a three-pointer, but Hargrove, Petrie, and Bozan kept the game well out of reach.

An official review determined Nebraska had last touched the ball. Hailey Weaver made two free throws to push the Huskers’ lead to 40-23. If I had a nickel for every time Britt Prince hit a buzzer-beater, I’d be rich by now.

The first half ended with Nebraska leading Samford 42-25.

### Halftime Stats

– **Jessica Petrie:** 15 points, 4 rebounds
– **Britt Prince:** 10 points, 2 assists
– **Petra Bozan:** 7 points
– **Callin Hake:** 5 assists

Nebraska was shooting 58% from the field but only 17% from three-point range. Samford was shooting 41% overall, including 33% from beyond the arc. The Huskers led the rebounding battle 16-13.

Samford had committed 15 turnovers compared to Nebraska’s 7. Nebraska had assisted on 13 of their shots.

### Third Quarter

Nebraska gave up an early basket, but Bozan responded with a put-back two. Jessica Petrie continued her breakout performance, up to 20 points after hitting an and-1 play, pushing the lead to 49-27.

Callin Hake scored her first points on a pair of free throws. Prince and Hake then hit back-to-back three-pointers, extending the lead to 57-30.

Kennadi Williams was called for a questionable foul, sending Samford to the line with one of two free throws made. After a Samford blocking call, Williams assisted Prince, who hit a wide-open three-pointer (61-34).

A media timeout was taken with four minutes left in the third. Amiah Hargrove was set to shoot three free throws after the break.

The remainder of the quarter was quiet, with only one field goal coming from another Prince three-pointer. Nebraska struggled with turnovers late in the quarter but held a commanding 66-36 lead heading into the final period.

### Fourth Quarter

Britt Prince began heating up, slicing through the defense for a layup to bring her total to 21 points. Samford hit back-to-back threes but trailed 70-46.

At this stage, Prince seemed unstoppable against the Bulldog defense. Hargrove’s steal and layup prompted Samford to take a timeout with 5:25 remaining.

Jessica Petrie got a block leading to an Amiah Hargrove layup. After another Samford turnover, Nebraska took a media timeout with 4:21 left.

Bozan made a layup, Hargrove sank a jumper, and Bozan added a steal as Nebraska went on a 10-0 run over the last six minutes—although they had been on a lengthy 3:39 scoring drought prior.

Hargrove delivered a big block, and with not much action left, Kennadi Williams dribbled out the clock as Nebraska cruised to an 80-46 victory.

### Postgame Stats

– **Britt Prince:** 23 points (10/13 FG)
– **Jessica Petrie:** 20 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists
– **Petra Bozan:** 13 points, 6 rebounds
– **Amiah Hargrove:** 12 points, 11 rebounds
– **Callin Hake:** 7 assists
– **Kennadi Williams:** 5 assists

Nebraska shot 51% from the field, including 26% from three-point range, compared to Samford’s 33% shooting overall and 30% from distance.

The Huskers recorded 17 steals and 22 assists, won the rebounding battle 37-31, and committed 14 turnovers compared to Samford’s 27.

### Looking Ahead

Nebraska’s next game will be against the Creighton Bluejays. The in-state rivals will meet at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Wednesday, November 12th, with tip-off set for 8:00 PM.

Hospital police officer shot and killed in North Carolina emergency department struggle

**Police Officer Shot and Killed During Struggle at North Carolina Hospital**

**GARNER, N.C. (AP)** — A police officer was shot and killed during a struggle in the emergency department lobby at a North Carolina hospital on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred around 9 a.m. at the WakeMed Garner Healthplex. WakeMed Campus Police Officer Roger Smith was tragically killed, according to a statement from WakeMed.

A “person of interest” in connection with the shooting is currently in custody, the Garner Police Department said in a statement. Hospital officials are working closely with local police and state investigators as the emergency department lobby remains closed.

Further details about the circumstances of the shooting have not been immediately released.

“Law enforcement officers put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe, and we are forever grateful for Officer Smith’s sacrifice,” North Carolina Governor Josh Stein said in a statement on X.

Garner is a city of about 31,000 people located just south of Raleigh in central North Carolina. The WakeMed police department oversees security at six facilities within the health care system, including the hospital in Garner. Officers are fully sworn law enforcement officials and receive all the police training required under state law.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Commanders officially rule out Terry McLaurin

The Commanders will be without quarterback Jayden Daniels (left elbow) and wide receiver Terry McLaurin (quad) this week, as both players have been officially ruled out.

McLaurin initially injured his quad in Week 3 and subsequently missed four games. He made a strong return in Week 8, contributing three catches for 54 yards and a spectacular touchdown. However, he played only 25 of 53 snaps before aggravating the injury and leaving the game. As a result, he also missed Week 9. For the season, McLaurin has recorded 13 catches for 203 yards and one touchdown.

On the injury front, the Commanders list defensive tackle Eddie Goldman (concussion), safety Quan Martin (hamstring), and safety Tyler Owens (hamstring/neck) as questionable for this week’s game.

In response to injuries in the secondary, the team signed safety Daryl Worley to the practice squad earlier this week.

Meanwhile, everyone else is expected to be available, including offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil (hamstring) and linebacker Bobby Wagner (thumb), who are both good to go.

Why Mariska Hargitay Jokingly Calls Her Kids “Losers”

**Watch: See Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann’s Rare Family Outing With 3 Kids on Red Carpet**

Mariska Hargitay isn’t pulling out the cuffs for her kids. The *Law & Order: Special Victims Unit* star recently shared insight into how she playfully handles her and husband Peter Hermann’s sons, August, 18, and Andrew, 13, and daughter, Amaya, 14, when they misbehave.

“I would say humor and comedy has saved my life,” Mariska explained in the October 21 episode of the *Good Hang with Amy Poehler* podcast. “I’m so grateful for that. When my kids do bad things, I call them losers, and then they say, ‘Oh, it’s not that bad if she’s calling us a loser.’ And we laugh through it. We just rip on the kids.”

She added, “I just say, ‘Don’t do that ’cause if you do that, you’re a hack and a loser. Is that what you want to be?’”

Indeed, the 61-year-old revealed that their dynamic has kept her family stronger than ever, thanks to Peter, 58, whom she married in 2004.

“This is why I’m still married, because my husband, sometimes I’m so upset or something’s happened and I’m so scared,” she recalled. “I’m like, ‘No, Peter. Something’s wrong. I feel a tightness in my chest and I might need to go to the hospital.’ He immediately goes into the comedy,” she continued, “and then as soon as I laugh, I go, ‘Should I be scared or not?’”

For Mariska, finding love — let alone on the set of *SVU* — was something she never imagined.

“We didn’t get married ‘til I was 40 and we dated for two years and then once he asked me to marry him, we got married in four months,” she explained. “I don’t think I could have handled a marriage earlier. I don’t think I’d be married. I just had too much to learn.”

Since saying “I do,” the *My Mom Jayne* filmmaker has learned a lot about what it takes to keep a relationship stronger than ever.

“We listen to each other and root for each other,” she told *E! News* in October 2024, “and challenge each other and are committed and so invested. We want the same things, and we cherish our union — that comes first.”

Despite being married for over two decades, she and the *Younger* actor have continued to learn more and more about each other.

“Peter is such a deep and soulful human,” she shared with *E!* in January 2024. “I just love getting to know him on a deeper level. And so there’s always more.”
