North Reading house catches fire twice in single day

NORTH READING, MASS. (WHDH) — A vacant house in North Reading caught fire twice in one day. The home was being used for a training exercise by the North Reading Fire Department on Wednesday, but it reignited shortly after crews finished and left around 6 p.m.

“Shortly after making up and making sure the house is safe and not burning, we got a call about forty-five minutes later that it was involved,” North Reading Fire Chief Don Stats said. “So we came right back.”

Firefighters noted that the second fire took more time to put out, even with prior knowledge of the building’s layout.

Residents in the area were surprised to see the fire department return so soon. “After a few minutes you could see all the fire trucks starting to arrive, starting to line up, coming up through the drive,” said Edward Baia. “And it was just one after another after another after another.”

Neighbors also expressed concerns about the fire potentially spreading due to the woods surrounding the home.

Monkeys escape from overturned truck on Mississippi highway

**Monkeys Escape After Truck Overturns on Mississippi Highway**

*HEIDELBERG, Miss. (AP)* — Monkeys being transported on a Mississippi highway escaped captivity Tuesday after the truck carrying them overturned, according to law enforcement officials.

All but one of the escaped monkeys were killed, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department said in a Facebook post, warning that the monkeys were “aggressive.” It remains unclear how many monkeys were originally in the truck.

The truck was carrying Rhesus monkeys, which typically weigh around 16 pounds (7.7 kilograms) and are among the most medically studied animals on the planet. The monkeys were being housed at the Tulane University National Biomedical Research Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, an institution that routinely provides primates to scientific research organizations.

In a statement, Tulane University clarified that the monkeys do not belong to the university, nor were they being transported by the university. Details about the ownership of the monkeys, who was transporting them, and their intended destination have not been disclosed.

Video footage shows monkeys crawling through tall grass on the side of Interstate 59 just north of Heidelberg, Mississippi. Wooden crates labeled “live animals” were found crumpled and scattered around the crash site.

Initially, the sheriff’s department stated that the monkeys were carrying diseases including herpes, but Tulane University later countered in a statement that the monkeys “have not been exposed to any infectious agent.” The sheriff’s department noted that the truck driver informed law enforcement that the monkeys were dangerous and required handling with personal protective equipment.

Tulane University said it is cooperating with law enforcement authorities. Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries was also on the scene.

The crash occurred approximately 100 miles (160 kilometers) from the state capital, Jackson. The cause of the truck overturn remains unknown.

Soccer star continues heartbreaking search for lost beagle Halo in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Aaron Ramsey’s move to Mexico has taken a distressing turn off the field as he continues his search for his lost dog, Halo.

On Friday, the Wales soccer star posted a black-and-white photo on Instagram showing him hugging the beagle, accompanied by the heartfelt message: “What I’d do to hold you one last time Halo.” Ramsey has appealed for help in tracking down his beloved pet and has offered a $10,000 reward.

“Please help us find Halo, he was lost in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato,” Ramsey wrote on Instagram.

The former Arsenal, Juventus, and Cardiff midfielder moved to Mexico in July, signing a one-year contract with top-tier club Pumas, which currently sits 12th in the 18-team league.

Ramsey missed Pumas’ last match against León on Saturday as he continued the search for Halo, who went missing earlier this month after being left at a dog shelter in Dolores, a city in Guanajuato, an industrial and agricultural state located in central Mexico.

His Pumas teammates and coach understand how much the dog means to Ramsey.

“We are with him, let’s see what happens in the upcoming days,” Pumas coach Efraín Juárez said after the team’s 1-0 win against Lyon. “He has this issue, we all know what it is, with his dog, but we are there for him.”

The search continues.

“We are still searching for answers. If you see a beagle in San Ignacio, Dolores Hidalgo, please message us,” Ramsey’s wife, Colleen Ramsey, said on social media.

Ramsey recently finished the final three games of the 2024-25 season as Cardiff’s interim manager after the club was relegated from England’s League Championship to the third-tier League One.

With 86 appearances for Wales, Ramsey has been a key player, helping his country reach the Euro 2016 semifinals.

Women’s Pro Baseball League selects Boston, New York LA, and San Francisco for inaugural season

The Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) has announced that New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco will be the cities representing the four teams competing in its inaugural season. The announcement was made Tuesday as the upstart league prepares for its debut.

Co-founded by Justine Siegal—the first woman to coach for an MLB team with the Oakland Athletics in 2015—the WPBL revealed plans last year to launch in 2026 as a six-team circuit featuring a regular season, playoffs, and an all-star game. When it begins, it will be the first professional women’s baseball league since the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, famously depicted in *A League of Their Own*, folded in 1954.

The league will start with four teams for its inaugural season, each comprising 15 players. The top 100 players from the WPBL’s summer tryouts have advanced to the league’s draft next month. The draft will also include some of baseball’s biggest stars, such as former Little League standout Mo’ne Davis, USA Baseball’s Kelsie Whitmore, and Japanese pitcher Ayami Sato.

All WPBL games in 2026 will be played at a neutral venue, which the league plans to announce at a later date. The four cities were chosen due to their large market sizes and passionate fan bases.

“Each of these cities are storied sports cities,” Siegal said in a statement. “We can’t wait to connect with the fans who live there and baseball fans across the country.”

Firefighters battle large fire in Worcester threatening entire city block, officials say

Large Fire Breaks Out in Worcester Commercial Block

WORCESTER, MASS. (WHDH) – Firefighters are battling a large fire that broke out at a building on Main Street in Worcester, tearing through a commercial block, officials said.

Crews arrived shortly after 8 p.m. to find a massive amount of smoke coming from a vacant building that has been under renovation. According to officials, the fire started in the basement and caused a partial floor collapse. Due to safety concerns, all firefighters were ordered out of the building.

Officials reported that getting to the fire’s hot spots has been difficult, as the fire spread into a shared attic space. The city’s Assistant Fire Chief cautioned that the entire block could be in jeopardy.
