China ends Google antitrust probe, shifts regulatory focus to NVIDIA

**China Ends Google Antitrust Probe, Shifts Regulatory Focus to NVIDIA**

*By Akash Pandey | Sep 18, 2025*

China has decided to end its antitrust investigation into tech giant Google, just six months after the probe was launched, according to the *Financial Times*. This decision comes amid escalating trade talks between Beijing and Washington, particularly concerning the popular app TikTok.

It is important to note that Google has not yet been officially informed about the termination of the investigation.

### Details of the Probe into Google’s Android OS

The investigation, initiated in February by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation, focused on Google’s market dominance through its Android operating system. The probe particularly examined how this dominance affects Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as OPPO and Xiaomi, which rely heavily on Google’s software ecosystem.

In Chinese regulatory terminology, the closure of this probe is described as “zhongzhi.”

### Strategic Shift in China’s Regulatory Focus

The decision to end the Google case is seen as a conciliatory gesture towards the United States, signaling Beijing’s willingness to negotiate. A source told the *Financial Times*, “Drop one case but seize the other. China is trying to narrow its retaliatory targets to make them more potent.”

Accordingly, China has now shifted its regulatory attention towards NVIDIA, the world’s most valuable chipmaker. This move is widely viewed as a potential bargaining chip in the ongoing US-China trade discussions.

### TikTok Ban Extended for Another Three Months

In related developments, US President Donald Trump recently announced an agreement with China regarding the sale of TikTok. This announcement followed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s confirmation of a “framework agreement” reached between the two countries over the app.

Despite this progress, President Trump has signed an executive order to extend the US ban on TikTok by three additional months. This marks the fourth extension of a law aimed at compelling the app’s sale from its Chinese parent company.

As negotiations continue, China’s regulatory maneuvers reflect a delicate balance between economic strategy and diplomatic signaling in the tense US-China relationship.

Bombay HC Issues Notices To NIA & Acquitted Accused In 2008 Malegaon Blast Case

**Bombay High Court Issues Notices in 2008 Malegaon Blast Case Appeal**

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Thursday issued notices to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and those acquitted in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. This development follows an appeal filed by family members of the blast victims, challenging the special court’s verdict that acquitted seven persons, including BJP MLA Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad has scheduled the appeal hearing after six weeks.

### About the Appeal

The appeal challenges the special court’s decision last year to acquit seven accused individuals, among whom are BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit. The blast in Malegaon resulted in six deaths and over 100 injuries.

### Blast Details and Investigation

On September 29, 2008, an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle detonated near a mosque in Malegaon, killing six people and injuring 101 others.

Initially, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested eleven individuals. However, after a decade, only seven were tried in court, with the others discharged. The NIA took over the investigation in 2011.

On July 31, special judge A.K. Lahoti acquitted all seven accused, stating that there was no “reliable and cogent evidence” presented against them to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt.

### Grounds of the Appeal

The families of the victims contend that the trial court acted merely as a “post office,” failing to rigorously test the prosecution’s case, especially considering missing or hostile evidence.

The appeal asserts that any procedural defects or investigation lapses should not have resulted in acquittals, particularly in a terrorism case. It further alleges that the NIA diluted the case deliberately.

Highlighting concerns about the prosecution, the petition references former special prosecutor Rohini Salian’s public statement that she was pressured to slow down proceedings against the accused. The replacement prosecutor, the petition argues, lacked experience in handling terror trials.

Baseless: Poll body junks Rahul Gandhi’s vote chori charge against Gyanesh Kumar

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has dismissed the allegations of voter deletions made by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, during his recent press conference. The Commission called these claims “incorrect and baseless,” emphasizing that no votes can be deleted online by the public.

However, the poll body did acknowledge that certain unsuccessful attempts were made to delete electors in Karnataka’s Aland Assembly Constituency. In response, the ECI has filed an FIR to investigate the matter further.

Rahul Gandhi began his press conference by stating that someone had attempted to delete 6,018 votes from the Aland seat in Karnataka using software and phone numbers from outside the state. He also displayed the cell phone numbers that were allegedly used in the attempt to manipulate the voter list.

The Election Commission continues to monitor the situation and is taking necessary steps to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Announces ₹1,000 Monthly Aid For Unemployed Graduates For 2 Years

Patna: The Bihar government has announced financial assistance of Rs 1,000 per month for unemployed graduate youth for a period of two years under the ‘Mukhyamantri Nishchay Swayam Sahayta Bhatta Yojana’. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar made this announcement on Thursday, expanding the scope of the scheme which was earlier applicable only to unemployed youths who had passed their intermediate exams.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), CM Nitish Kumar stated, “I am pleased to inform that under the state government’s seven resolves programme, the previously operated ‘Mukhyamantri Nishchay Swayam Sahayta Bhatta Yojana’ has now been expanded. Under this, the benefit of the Self-Help Allowance Scheme, which was previously being provided to intermediate-passed youth, has now been extended to unemployed graduate youth who have passed in arts, science, and commerce.”

The Chief Minister further explained that graduate youth aged between 20 and 25 years, who are not pursuing any studies, striving for employment, do not have any self-employment, and have not secured any government, private, or non-government job, will be eligible for the allowance. They will receive Rs 1,000 per month for a maximum duration of two years under this scheme.

With the Bihar Assembly elections scheduled for later this year, CM Nitish Kumar expressed his hope that “the youth will use this assistance allowance to obtain necessary training and prepare for competitive examinations so that their future can be secured.”

Since the formation of the new government in November 2005, providing government jobs and employment opportunities to youth, along with their empowerment, has been a top priority. The Chief Minister noted, “A target has been set to provide government jobs and employment to one crore youth in the next five years. In the coming days, a large number of new jobs and employment opportunities will be created in the government and private sectors.”

To achieve this ambitious target, the government is focusing on skill development training for the youth to help them secure jobs and employment. The objective of this initiative is to ensure that the youth of Bihar become self-reliant, skilled, and employment-oriented, thereby contributing significantly to the development of the state and the country.

India Studies Implications Of Saudi-Pakistan Mutual Defence Pact, Vows To Safeguard Security

New Delhi: As Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed a strategic mutual defence pact, India said on Thursday it is carefully studying the implications of the agreement for its national security and regional stability, while reiterating its commitment to safeguarding its interests.

The pact was signed in Riyadh by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday. Both sides agreed that an attack on one would be considered an attack on both.

In response, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement saying, “We have seen reports of the signing of a strategic mutual Defence pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The Government was aware that this development, which formalises a long-standing arrangement between the two countries, had been under consideration.”

“We will study the implications of this development for our national security as well as for regional and global stability. The Government remains committed to protecting India’s national interests and ensuring comprehensive national security in all domains,” it added.

The ‘Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement’ marks the most formal expression of a decades-long security relationship that has seen Pakistan training Saudi troops and participating in joint exercises since the 1960s.

A joint statement from Riyadh and Islamabad said the accord aims to “develop aspects of Defence cooperation” and “strengthen joint deterrence against any aggression.”

This development comes shortly after the Pahalgam attack, in which 26 people were killed by heavily armed terrorists of The Resistance Front, an offshoot of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.

In retaliation, India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’, targeting nine high-value terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Pakistan later responded with counterstrikes, raising tensions further.

India subsequently rolled out ‘Operation Sindoor Outreach’, sending delegations of parliamentarians and officials to friendly nations to highlight Pakistan’s state-sponsored terrorism. One such delegation, led by BJP MP Baijayant Panda, visited Saudi Arabia as part of this campaign.

The Defence pact also coincides with a wider climate of instability in the region. Just two days earlier, Arab and Islamic nations convened an extraordinary joint session of the Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) after Israel’s September 9 airstrike in Doha killed senior Hamas political leaders during ceasefire talks. The strike drew condemnation across Arab capitals.
